Extract This volume represents a selection of papers presented at the Geological Society of London meeting ‘Marine Tephrochronology’, held at Burlington House, London, UK on 26 October 2011. The meeting itself was sponsored by the Geological Society of London's Marine Studies Group, with additional co-sponsorship from the Quaternary Research Association. The aim of this meeting was to bring together a wide range of speakers who would contribute evidence and data to illustrate the diverse range of tephrochronology applications, helping to spotlight recent advances in the field of marine tephrochronology. In particular, the motivation for the conference organizers resulted from their involvement in the SMART project (Synchronising Marine And ice-core Records using Tephrochronology) – one of the first systematic initiatives to investigate the cryptotephra record preserved within North Atlantic marine sequences (Abbott et al. 2011, 2013, 2014; Davies et al. in press). ...
