Summary Partition coefficients (Ka) necessary for the understanding of solute-material interactions was experimentally generated by liquid chromatography. Using three commercial polysulfones (Udel, Victrex and Radel) as the stationary phase and water as the mobile phase, retention behavior for a series of alcohols and sugars were determined. The logarithm of the distribution of the solute between the mobile and stationary phase was linearly related to solute descriptors such as octanol-water partition coefficients (KO/W) and molecular connectivity index (κ1). Solubility parameters were used as means of describing the different stationary phases and were related to chromatographic behavior.
