Summary It has been shown how the isomers of octahydronaphthalene may be separated on a polar column by a gas-liquid Chromatographic method, whilst the isomers of menthene may be separated on a silver nitrate column using the same method. Gas-liquid Chromatographic methods of separation, in combination with other methods, are used in control of the results. The action of polar and non-polar columns is demonstrated by examples of the isomers of menthol and carvomenthol. These columns influence the interchange of configuration and conformation of the hydroxyl group and its hydrogen bridge linkage in relationship to its possibility of association. The 6 isomers of 1,4-decalindiol were taken as an illustration for the relationship between the various methods of separation, (e.g. gas-liquid chromatography, column chromatography or countercurrent separation), and the different orientations of the molecule.

Zusammenfassung Am Beispiel der isomeren Octaline wird gezeigt, wie an polaren Säulen, am Beispiel der Menthene, wie an Silbernitratsäulen gaschromatographische Trennungen bewirkt werden und wie die Trennungen durch Kombination mit anderen Verfahren kontrolliert werden können. An den Beispielen der isomeren Menthole und Carvomenthole wird die Wirkung polarer und unpolarer Säulen im Wechselspiel mit Konfiguration und Konstellation des Hydroxyls und seiner Wasserstoffbrückenbindung und die Beziehungen zum Assoziationsvermögen dargetan. Am Beispiel der 6 isomeren Decalin-1,4-diole werden die unterschiedlichen analytischen Trennverfahren von Gaschromatographie, Säulenchromatographie und Verteilung in Beziehung zum Feinbau der Moleküle erläutert.
