In:  P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow | Supplement to: AK43 Team (1990): Biological and Geological Bottom Investigations in the South Atlantic. P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, USSR Academy of Sciences, Transactions, vol. 126. Nauka Publ. (Moscow); Vinogradova, N.G. (Ed.), 208 pp
    Publication Date: 2024-05-15
Description: The book is devoted to investigations of benthic fauna and geology of the Southern Atlantic Ocean. These works have been carried out in terms of exploring biological structure of the ocean and are of great importance for development of this fundamental problem. They are based on material collected during Cruise 43 of R/V Akademik Kurchatov in 1985-1986 and Cruise 43 of R/V Dmitry Mendeleev in 1989. Problems of quantitative distribution, group composition and trophic structure of benthos in the Southern Scotia Sea, along the east-west Transatlantic section along 31°30'S, and offshore Namibia in the area of the Benguela upwelling are under consideration in the book. Authors present new data on fauna of several groups of deep-sea bottom animals and their zoogeography. Much attention is paid to analysis of morphological structure of the Scotia Sea floor considered in terms of plate tectonics. Bottom sediments along the Transatlantic section and facial variation of sediments in the area of South Shetland Islands and of the continental margin of Namibia are under consideration.

Description: Recent studies of abyssal peridotites (Johnson et al., 1990, doi:10.1029/JB095iB03p02661), mid-ocean-ridge basalts (MORBs) (McKenzie, 1985, doi:10.1016/0012-821X(85)90001-9) and their entrained melt inclusions (Sobolev and Shimizu, 1993, doi:10.1038/363151a0; Humler and Whitechurch, 1988, doi:10.1016/0012-821X(88)90055-6) have shown that fractional melting of the upwelling sub-oceanic mantle produces magmas with a much wider range of compositions than erupted MORBs. In particular, it seems that strongly depleted primary magmas are routinely produced by melting beneath ridges (Johnson et al., 1990, doi:10.1029/JB095iB03p02661). The absence of strongly depleted melts as erupted lavas prompts the question of how long such magmas survive beneath ridges, before their distinctive compositions are concealed by mixing with more enriched magmas. Here we report mineral compositions from a unique suite of oceanic cumulates recovered from DSDP Site 334 (Aumento et al., doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.37.1977), which indicate that the rocks crystallized from basaltic liquids that were strongly depleted in Na, Ti, Zr, Y, Sr and rare-earth elements relative to any erupted MORB. It thus appears that the magmatic plumbing system beneath the Mid-Atlantic Ridge permitted strongly depleted magmas to accumulate in a magma chamber and remain sufficiently isolated to produce cumulate rocks. Even so, spatial heterogeneity in the compositions of high-calcium pyroxenes suggests that in the later stages of solidification these rocks reacted with infiltrating enriched basaltic liquids.

Description / Table of Contents: The book deals with the influence of cryogenesis (a complex process of heating - cooling, freezing - thawing and accompanying phenomena) on earth surface and upper horizons transformation for the late Cenozoic period, and for the present time. The book summarizes the notions of geocryological zonality, altitudinal zonality and "sectorality" in formation of soil thermal regime, frozen strata and taliks distribution, season freezing and thawing, depending on geographical location of the territory and recent natural conditions. The book also gives an analyses of zonal and regional regularities in periglacial processes and phenomena distribution as well as formation of cryogenic composition for different syngenetic, epigenetic and taber soils and epigenetic frozen rocks. The influence of geothermal, geostructural, geomorphological and hydrogeological conditions, glaciation and deglaciation, Arctic seas transgressions and regressions on thickness, and composition of permafrost zone and its interaction with natural gas hydrates is analysed. The book describes major peculiarities of cryolitozone of platforms, mountain areas and Arctic submarine cryolithozone in connection with Pleistocene and Holocene paleogeography. The peculiarities of lithosphere cryogenesis are analysed mainly for northern Eurasia and partly for North America. The book is intended for students and professional geocryologists, engineering geologists, hydrogeologists, geographers and geoecologists as well as geologists dealing with oil and gas, miners, construction workers and those dealing with Northern and Eastern parts of Russia and Northern part of North America.

Description: The purpose of the present work is the research regarding the distribution of the electrical resistivity in the southern part of Central Andes. Supported by a considerable database and with the aid of one- and two-dimensional modelling tools developed for magnetotelurics and deep geomagnetical sounding, several models of the distribution of the electrical resistivity in the Andean crust were developed. They allow qualitative and quantitative insights related to the electrical structure within it. In the Andean segment between 21° and 25° S, several isolated measure stations and five regional profiles each of several 100 km length were processed to establish conductivity models for northern Chile, southern Bolivia and northwestern Argentina. Within this research work the ’coast effect’ at an active plate margin has to be taken into account and for this purpose, the Pacific Ocean was included as a boundary condition in a 2D model extending from the Pacific up to the High Andes. Based on three 2D modelled E-W oriented profiles, a greater model could be derived that involves all the present morphostructural units at a latitude of 21° 30’ S. These models showed mainly that: • below the Coastal Cordillera, the resistivity ranging within 3000 Ωm is comparatively high. Nevertheless, in this region a strike-parallel oriented conductor in the upper crust could be identified, which has to be lamellated. • down to great depths the resistivity of the ’normal’ Andean crust is relatively small, having values of 50 to 200 Ωm. • beneath the Western Cordillera, a shallow conductivity anomaly reaches total conductance of about 25000 S. • another conductivity anomaly with a total conductance of ca. 14000 S has been identified in the lower crust below the Altiplano. This anomaly reaches shallower levels to the east, and in the western part of the Eastern Cordillera, the total conductance increases. Eastwards of La Quiaca (ca. 65° 30’ W) the anomaly terminates abruptly. In the eastern part of the Eastern Cordillera a relatively high resistivity from the surface down to great depths was observed. • the Andean foreland shows a cover with good conductivity values. Beneath, the resistivity increases downward up to more than 3000 ßm from W to E. As a cause of the increased conductivity beneath the Coastal Cordillera, joint systems could account for the uprise of free water generated during the subduction of the Nazca plate. The extremely good conductor below the Western Cordillera can be interpreted together with gravity and seismic evidences as a partial melted crust. Besides, the conductivity anomaly beneath the Altiplano and the western Eastern Cordillera can be explained partly through the existence of ore deposits but also in terms of thrust tectonics, where the detachment zones are characterized by the presence of fluids.

Description: A soft and hardware system was combined for construction and visualisation of faulted geological strata units. Based on geological cross-sections, the system enables the graphical interactive 3D-surface modeling. By constructing the 3D-layermodel of the Erftblock (Lower Rhine Basin, Germany) the system was verified. First a description of the geological evolution and the present situation of the exploration area is provided. In addition the used data will be explained. This consists of cross-sections, wells, isopleth maps as well as the interpretation, processing, recording and management of the data. Then follows an illustration of the system. It joins commercial and free software under a programable user interface, which allows an optimisation of this tool depending on the necessary applications. The system unifies functions of database management, 3D-visualisation and interactive 3D-construction based on CAD-methods. The open and modular design of the system enables the adaption to specific geological requirements and current tasks. In particular, the interaction in terms of construction and visualisation allows the insertion of expert knowledge and additional facts into the modeling process. It also provides the possibility for exact analysis of complex 3D-objects. Methodical elements of the used construction process that are based on irregular triangulation will be explained. References to diferent approaches of triangulation will be revealed. In this work the approximation of natural surfaces is realized by means of flat and polygonal facets. This method form the base of the 3D-construction of the Erftblock, by which certain selected fault- and strata-boundaries are considered. To describe the function of the system and the approach for construction the singel steps of modeling will be pointed out. The process of modeling consists of data selection, construction, and finaly the analysis of the 3D-surface arrangement.

Description: Variations in the contribution of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW), relative to North Pacific Deep Water (NPDW), to the Southern Ocean, are assessed by comparing delta13C records from the mid-depth North Atlantic, deep Southern Ocean, and deep equatorial Pacific Ocean. In general, the relative contribution of NADW was greater during interglaciations than glaciations of the past 550,000 years. An increase in the NADW flux to the Southern Ocean since the last glaciation was proposed to have resulted in higher atmospheric CO2 in the Holocene (Broecker and Peng, 1989, doi:10.1029/GB003i003p00215). Glacial-interglacial variations in the proportion of NADW in the Southern Ocean may have also influenced atmospheric CO2 levels over the past 550,000 years. The greatest relative flux of NADW to the Southern Ocean occurred during interglacial stage 11. Faunal data suggest that the North Atlantic polar front and southern Indian Ocean subtropical convergence zone were located farthest poleward during stage 11. Warmth in these locations and a strong southward flux of NADW during stage 11 may be causally linked by the NADW formation process/warm water return route (Gordon, 1986, doi:10.1029/JC091iC04p05037). Time series analysis indicates that delta13C variations in the deep Southern Ocean occur at the same frequencies as the Earth's orbital variations and are coherent and in phase with delta18O. At most, 50% of the glacial-interglacial delta13C amplitude in the Southern Ocean is due changes in the contribution of NADW. The remainder is probably due to mean ocean delta13C changes.

Description: The high-resolution delta18O and delta13C records of benthic foraminifera from a 150,000-year long core from the Caribbean Sea indicate that there was generally high delta13C during glaciations and low delta13C during interglaciations. Due to its 1800-m sill depth, the properties of deep water in the Caribbean Sea are similar to those of middepth tropical Atlantic water. During interglaciations, the water filling the deep Caribbean Sea is an admixture of low delta13C Upper Circumpolar Water (UCPW) and high delta13C Upper North Atlantic Deep Water (UNADW). By contrast, only high delta13C UNADW enters during glaciations. Deep ocean circulation changes can influence atmospheric CO2 levels (Broecker and Takahashi, 1985; Boyle, 1988 doi:10.1029/JC093iC12p15701; Keir, 1988 doi:10.1029/PA003i004p00413; Broecker and Peng, 1989 doi:10.1029/GB003i003p00215). By comparing delta13C records of benthic foraminifera from cores lying in Southern Ocean Water, the Caribbean Sea, and at several other Atlantic Ocean sites, the thermohaline state of the Atlantic Ocean (how close it was to a full glacial or full interglacial configuration) is characterized. A continuum of circulation patterns between the glacial and interglacial extremes appears to have existed in the past. Subtracting the deep Pacific (~mean ocean water) delta13C record from the Caribbean delta13C record yields a record which describes large changes in the Atlantic Ocean thermohaline circulation. The delta13C difference varies as the vertical nutrient distribution changes. This new proxy record bears a striking resemblance to the 150,000-year-long atmospheric CO2 record (Barnola et al., 1987 doi:10.1038/329408a0). This favorable comparison between the new proxy record and the atmospheric CO2 record is consistent with Boyle's (1988a) model that vertical nutrient redistribution has driven large atmospheric CO2 changes in the past. Changes in the relative contribution of NADW and Pacific outflow water to the Southern Ocean are also consistent with Broecker and Peng's (1989) recent model for atmospheric CO2 changes.

    Publication Date: 2024-05-02
Description: In two cores with oxygen isotope stratigraphy from the southern Okhotsk Sea, marine pollen and siliceous microfauna record concurrent late glacial through Holocene variations in regional terrestrial and marine environments. Glacial vegetation around the southern Okhotsk basin, which resembles the present tundra/steppe of the northwest coast of this marginal sea, yields to spruce-dominated boreal forests during the glacial/interglacial transition. Temperate forest components, such as oak, peak during the mid-Holocene. Decreasing oak accompanied by increasing spruce reflects the effect of global cooling on local vegetation during the last 4 kyr. Although the radiolarian fauna in the Okhotsk Sea samples is similar to that present in the northwest Pacific, the dominant species in both regions differ. Concentrations of radiolarians are low in latest glacial samples, with higher concentrations occurring above and below this interval. Cycladophora davisiana, the dominant radiolarian species in the majority of Holocene Okhotsk Sea sediments, is present at lower percentages in late glacial samples from our two sites. Thus, this species' Holocene/latest Pleistocene abundance pattern in Sea of Okhotsk sediments is the reverse of that recorded in high-latitude open ocean sites. The combined marine pollen and radiolarian records indicate changes in the Sea of Okhotsk's physical oceanographic conditions and surrounding vegetation during the late glacial which were associated with this region's response to global climate change.

Description: We present records of biogenic opal percentage and burial rate in 12 piston cores from the Atlantic and Indian sectors of the Southern Ocean. These records provide a detailed, quantitative description of changing patterns of opal deposition over the last 450 kyr. The striking regional coherence of these records suggests that dissolution in the deep sea and sediment pore waters does not obscure the surface productivity signal, and therefore these opal time series can be used in combination with other surface water tracers to make inferences about the chemistry and circulation of the Southern Ocean under different global climate conditions. Three broad depositional patterns can be distinguished. Northernmost records (39°-42°S latitude) are characterized by enhanced opal burial during glacial periods and strong 41 kyr periodicity. Records from cores just north of the present Antarctic Polar Front (46°-49°S) show even larger increases in opal burial rate during glacial intervals, but have variance concentrated in the 100 and 23 kyr bands. Southernmost records (51°-55°S) are completely out of phase with those to the north, with greatly reduced opal burial rates during glacial periods. Taken as a whole, the opal records show no evidence for the increased total Antarctic productivity predicted by recent geochemical models of atmospheric CO2 variability. The areal expansion of Southern Ocean sea ice over the present zone of high siliceous productivity provides one plausible explanation for the glacial-interglacial opal patterns. The excess silica not taken up in this zone during glacial periods would contribute to greater nutrient availability and thus higher productivity in the subantarctic region. However, local circulation changes may act to modify this basic signal, possibly accounting for the observed differences in the opal variance spectra.

Description: The CO2 record for air bubbles from the Byrd Station ice core suggest a drawdown in the ocean-atmosphere carbon reservoir during the early Holocene. Such a drawdown would require a corresponding increase in the CO3= ion concentration in the deep sea. We report here the results of a search in Atlantic sediments for evidence that the lysocline showed a corresponding deepening. While both the pteropod and the calcite preservation records we have obtained are consistent with expectation, they are not conclusive.

Description: The Multitracers Experiment studied a transect of water column, sediment trap, and sediment data taken across the California Current to develop quantitative methods for hindcasting paleoproductivity. The experiment used three sediment trap moorings located 120 km, 270 km, and 630 km from shore at the Oregon/California border in North America. We report here about the sedimentation and burial of particulate organic carbon (Corg) and CaCO3. In order to observe how the integrated CaCO3 and Corg burial across the transect has changed since the last glacial maximum, we have correlated core from the three sites using time scales constrained by both radiocarbon and oxygen isotopes. By comparing surface sediments to a two-and-a-half year sediment trap record, we have also defined the modern preservation rates for many of the labile sedimentary materials. Our analysis of the Corg data indicates that significant amounts (20-40%) of the total Corg being buried today in surface sediments is terrestrial. At the last glacial maximum, the terrestrial Corg fraction within 300 km of the coast was about twice as large. Such large fluxes of terrestrial Corg obscure the marine Corg record, which can be interpreted as productivity. When we corrected for the terrestrial organic matter, we found that the mass accumulation rate of marine Corg roughly doubled from the glacial maximum to the present. Because preservation rates of organic carbon are high in the high sedimentation rate cores, corrections for degradation are straightforward and we can be confident that organic carbon rain rate (new productivity) also doubled. As confirmation, the highest burial fluxes of other biogenic components (opal and Ba) also occur in the Holocene. Productivity off Oregon has thus increased dramatically since the last glacial maximum. CaCO3 fluxes also changed radically through the deglaciation; however, they are linked not to CaCO3 production but rather to changes in deepwater carbonate chemistry between 18 Ka and now.

Description: A comparison of cadmium/calcium (Cd/Ca) records of benthic foraminifera from a deep Cape Basin and a deep eastern equatorial Pacific core suggests that over the past 400,000 years, the nutrient concentration of Circumpolar Deep Water (CPDW) has always been lower than that of the deep Pacific. The data further suggest that at the 100,000- and 23,000-year orbital periods, the contribution of North Atlantic Deep Water to CPDW is at a maximum during periods of ice growth and at a minimum during periods of ice decay. These results are not in agreement with results based on carbon isotope records of benthic foraminifera, which suggest intervals of CPDW nutrient enrichment relative to the deep Pacific and an approximately in-phase relationship between CPDW nutrient concentration and ice volume. Resolution of the apparent conflict between delta13C and Cd/Ca data may provide important constraints on past deep-ocean circulation and nutrient variability.

Description: Late Pleistocene signals of calcium carbonate, organic carbon, and opaline silica concentration and accumulation are documented in a series of cores from a zonal/meridional/depth transect in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean to reconstruct the regional sedimentary history. Spectral analysis reveals that maxima and minima in biogenous sedimentation occur with glacial-interglacial cyclicity as a function of both (1) primary production at the sea surface modulated by orbitally forced variation in trade wind zonality and (2) destruction at the seafloor by variation in the chemical character of advected intermediate and deep water from high latitudes modulated by high-latitude ice volume. From these results a pattern emerges in which the relative proportion of signal variance from the productivity signal centered on the precessional (23 kyr) band decreases while that of the destruction signal centered on the obliquity (41 kyr) and eccentricity (100 kyr) periods increases below ~3600-m ocean depth.

Description: The Pliocene-Pleistocene history of CaCO3 preservation in the central equatorial Pacific is reconstructed from a suite of deep-sea cores and is compared to fluctuations in global ice volume inferred from delta18O records. The results are highlighted by: (1) a strong covariation between CaCO3 preservation and ice volume over 104 to 106 year time scales; (2) a long-term increase in ice volume and CaCO3 preservation since 3.9 Ma demonstrated by a deepening of the lysocline and the carbonate critical depth; (3) a dramatic shift to greater CaCO3 preservation at 2.9 Ma; (4) distinctive ice-volume growth and CaCO3 preservation events at 2.4 Ma, which are associated with the significant intensification of northern hemisphere glaciation; (5) a mid-Pleistocene transition to 100-kyr cyclicity in both CaCO3 preservation and ice volume; and (6) a 600-kyr Brunhes dissolution cycle superimposed on the late Pleistocene glacial/interglacial 100-kyr cycles. CaCO3 preservation primarily reflects the carbonate chemistry of abyssal waters and is controlled by long-term (106 year) and short-term (104 to 105 year) biogeochemical cycling and by distinct paleoclimatic events. We attribute the long-term increase in CaCO3 preservation primarily to a fractionation of CaCO3 deposition from continental shelf to ocean basin, and secondarily to a gradual rise in the riverine and glaciofluvial flux of Ca++. On shorter time scales, the fluctuations in CaCO3 preservation slightly lag ice volume fluctuations and are attributed to climatically induced changes in the circulation and chemistry of Pacific deep water.

Description: Sediment cores from the southern continental margin of Australia are near the formation region of Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) and Subantarctic Mode Water and record the changes in these water masses from the last glacial maximum through the present. Carbon and oxygen isotopes were measured on the benthic foraminiferal species Planulina wuellerstrorfi for both the Recent and last glacial maximum sections of the cores and were then used to reconstruct temperature and carbon isotopic water column profiles. The glacial oxygen isotope profile indicates a vertical temperature structure for this region similar to that in today's Subantarctic Zone. Although intermediate water delta13C cannot be used as a nutrient tracer in this region because of the large influence of air-sea carbon isotopic exchange on this water mass, delta13C can be used as a water mass tracer. Today, AAIW properties reflect contributions from cool, fresh Antarctic Surface Waters (2/3) and warm, salty waters from the Indian Ocean (1/3). When examined in conjuction with the glacial delta13C and delta18C data from the north Indian and Southern Oceans, our data suggest a much reduced contribution of North Indian Ocean intermediate water to glacial Antarctic Intermediate Water relative to the contribution of Antarctic Surface Water. This fresher, cooler glacial Antarctic Intermediate Water would be distributed to the intermediate-depth ocean, thus decreasing the transport of salt produced in the North Indian Ocean to the rest of the world's oceans. Combined with evidence for a reduced influence of North Atlantic Deep Water, these results suggest major changes in the pathways for the redistribution of heat and salt in the glacial ocean.

    Publication Date: 2024-05-02
Description: Radiocarbon ages on CaCO3 from deep-sea cores offer constraints on the nature of the CaCO3 dissolution process. The idea is that the toll taken by dissolution on grains within the core top bioturbation zone should be in proportion to their time of residence in this zone. If so, dissolution would shift the mass distribution in favor of younger grains, thereby reducing the mean radiocarbon age for the grain ensemble. We have searched in vain for evidence supporting the existence of such an age reduction. Instead, we find that for water depths of more than 4 km in the tropical Pacific the radiocarbon age increases with the extent of dissolution. We can find no satisfactory steady state explanation and are forced to conclude that this increase must be the result of chemical erosion. The idea is that during the Holocene the rate of dissolution of CaCO3 has exceeded the rain rate of CaCO3. In this circumstance, bioturbation exhumes CaCO3 from the underlying glacial sediment and mixes it with CaCO3 raining from the sea surface.

    Publication Date: 2024-05-02
Description: High-resolution records of the concentration and mass accumulation rate (MAR, or flux) of biogenic sediments from core RC11-210 in the central equatorial Pacific are compared for the entire late Pleistocene. The fluxes of calcium carbonate and organic carbon correlate well. The opal flux pattern shows no direct correlation with the other two; rather, opal flux maxima correlate with slopes of (i.e. both precede and follow) the organic carbon and carbonate MAR peaks. Organic carbon and calcite therefore may both be better indicators of past productivity than opal, which is an indicator of transition at this location. We interpret the sequence low biogenic fluxes, high opal fluxes, high carbonate, carbon, and opal fluxes as representing the transition from low to high sea surface biological productivity. The phase relationships for eccentricity of the biogenic sedimentation records were compared to those of other climatic indications including the oxygen isotope record of ice volume, the ice core CO2 record, the Pacific delta13C record, the deep nutrient (Cd/Ca) record, and the eolian grain-size record of wind intensity. We find that starting from maximum ice volume (phase angle of 0°) the phase relationships of the 100,000-year periodicity show, in the first quadrant, maximum wind intensity (30°) and maximum calcite and carbon flux (45°) occurring first, followed by maximum opal flux (75°) and then maximum deep nutrients (95°). Minimum Pacific delta13C occurs at a phase angle of 155°, the maximum CO2 in the Vostok record and minimum ice volume is at 180°. Thus, in the eccentricity climate cycle, glacial conditions lead to stronger wind-driven circulation which enhances productivity which in turn results in enhanced oceanic and atmospheric carbon dioxide and minimum ice volume.
