    Description: Bei den hydroakustischen Untersuchungen der in der westlichen Ostsee pelagisch lebenden Fischarten, Hering und Sprott, traten in der Vergangenheit große Unterschiede zwischen den Tag- und Nachtmeßwerten auf. Während der 327. Reise des FFK "Solea" wurden in einem Teil der ReiseUntersuchungen durchgeführt, die diesen Sachverhalt näher beleuchten. Es wurde gefunden daß, die Unterschiede in den Integratorwerten, speziell in diesem Gebiet, im wesentlichen durch die vertikale Migration der Fische im Tagesverlauf hervorgerufen werden. Während des Tages halten sie sich in der Nähe des Bodens auf und sind damit technisch bedingt zu einem großen Teil einer hydroakustischen Erfassung nicht zugänglich, wogegen die Nachtmessungcn reproduzierbare Werte ergeben. Aus diesem Grund sind die hydroakustischen Aufnahmen in der westlichen Ostsee wegen der größeren zu erwartenden Meßgenauigkeit nachts durchzuführen.

    Description: Seit 1978 wird im Bereich der Nordsee und der westbritischen Gewässer auf Vorschlag französischer Fischereibiologen ein besonderer Grundschleppnetztyp als Standardgerät für Forschungsfänge eingesetzt. Sein Name ist GOV (eine Abkürzung für eine seiner wichtigen Eigenschaften: Grande Ouverture Verticala = große Öffnungshöhe). Die Eiführung erfolgte in den Bestandskundlichen Gruppen des Internationalen Rats für Meeresforschung (ICES) ohne Einschaltung des für die Fragen der Festsetzung eines Standardgeräts eigendlich zuständigen Komitees für Fangtechnik (Fish Capture Committee). Über diesen Verzicht auf fachlichen Rat wäre hinwegzusehen, wenn es nicht dauernde Probleme und eine überdurchschnittliche Schadenshäufigkeit mit diesem Fanggerät gäbe. So aber besteht gegenwärtig die Situation, daß nach geschaffenen Fakten versucht werden muß, das beste aus der Lage zu machen.

Wegen mancher guter Eigenschaften, zu denen nach Angabe des deutschen Herstellers auch eine im Gebrauch weitgehend konstant bleibende Maschengröße zählen soll, hatten BETELON-Netzgarne in der Fischerei der Bundesrepublik - besonders in der Hochseefischerei - schon kurz nach ihrer Einführung eine erhebliche Bedeutung erlangt.

    Description: The Chesapeake and Delaware Canal is a man-made waterway connecting the upper Chesapeake Bay with the Delaware Bay. It started in 1829 as a private barge canal with locks, two at the Delaware end, and one at the Chesapeake end. For the most part, natural tidal and non-tidal waterways were connected by short dredged sections to form the original canal. In 1927, the C and D Canal was converted to a sea-level canal, with a controlling depth of 14 feet, and a width of 150 feet. In 1938 the canal was deepened to 27 feet, with a channel width of 250 feet. Channel side slopes were dredged at 2.5:1, thus making the total width of the waterway at least 385 feet in those segments representing new cuts or having shore spoil area dykes rising above sea level. In 1954 Congress authorized a further enlargement of the Canal to a depth of 35 feet and a channel width of 450 feet. (pdf contains 27 pages)

    Description: During the 1950s and 1960s, F.J.H. Mackereth developed and published plans for a series of pneumatic samplers for lake sediments. Unfortunately, as the equipment was continually evolving during ensuing research, no user manuals, beyond the original publication, had been produced. Over the last few years there have been a few potentially very serious accidents with the 1-metre corer, which has prompted the authors to carry out a risk assessment. This highlighted two weaknesses in the design and its later developments. They can be corrected simply by checking for screw threads that may have been added to the exhaust port on the mini-corer, and by changing the operating procedure. An A4 nine-page user manual is now available from the authors. A small charge ( pound sterling 10 in 1998) will be made to cover handling costs and postage.

    Description: The possible ecological effects of suspended sediments are manifold. Briefly, suspended sediments may cause an increased surface for microorganism growth, fewer temperature fluctuations, chemical adsorption orabsorption, blanketing, mechanical-abrasive actions, and light penetration reduction (Cairns, 1968). Sherk and Cronin (1970) have pointed out that the above effects have been little studied in the estuarine environment. The ecological effects of suspended sediments on fish eggs and larvae may be of prime importance t o the C and D Canal area, an important spawning and primary nursery area for a variety of estuary: e species (Johnson,1972). This section discusses the effects of suspended sediment on the eggs and larvae of striped bass and white perch.

    Description: Commercially available software packages for IBM PC-compatibles are evaluated to use for data acquisition and processing work. Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) acquired computers since 1978 to use on shipboard data acquisition (Le. CTD, radiometric, etc.) and data processing. First Hewlett-Packard desktops were used then a transition to the DEC VAXstations, with software developed mostly by the author and others at MLML (Broenkow and Reaves, 1993; Feinholz and Broenkow, 1993; Broenkow et al, 1993). IBM PC were at first very slow and limited in available software, so they were not used in the early days. Improved technology such as higher speed microprocessors and a wide range of commercially available software made use of PC more reasonable today. MLML is making a transition towards using the PC for data acquisition and processing. Advantages are portability and available outside support.

    Description: Die Unterwasser-Beobachtungstechnik mit Hilfe von Videokameras wurde nach 1945 entwickelt und erzielte in den 50er Jahren ihre ersten aufsehenerregenden Erfolge auf dem Gebiet der Wracksuche. Versuche mit der neuen Technik in der Fischereiforschung ließen gleichzeitig die Grenzen bei der Beobachtung von fischereilichen Fanggeräten und -objekten erkennen: die geringe Lichtstärke der verfügbaren Kameras erforderte den Einsatz von Kunstlicht, d.h. eine Beobachtung des Fangprozesses unter "natürlichen" Bedingungen ohne Zusatzbeleuchtung war nicht möglich. Diese Einschränkung sowie die am Beginn jeder technischen Entwicklung unvermeidlichen Kinderkrankheiten verhinderten zu dieser Zeit die allgemeine Einführung der Unterwasser-Beobachtungstechnik mit Video-Kameras in der Fischereiforschung.

    Description: Investigations on the avoidance reactions of pelagic schooling fish (herring and sprat) released by an approaching fishery vessel were carried out during the 378th cruise of FRC "Solea" from 25 September to 3 October 1995 in the Arkona Sea, southern Baltic. An echosoundersystem EK 500/BI500 with a 38 kHz transducer mounted on a towed body as weIl as a 120 kHz hull mounted transducer were used. Fish densities were measured synchronously aswell as under the ship as at a laterally distances from the ship by the transducer of the towed body. By these means the variation of fish densities up to a certain distance from the ship is possible. The advantage of using an echo integrating system for these measurements is, that it works also for not schooling fish and under conditions where schooling fish disperse (e.g. at night).

    Description: Seit der Einführung der Plattfisch-Schutzzonen existiert das Problem der Kontrolle der maximalen Antriebsleistung von Fischkuttern. Nachdem in den letzten Jahren die Motoren der in den Schutzzonen zugelassenen Fahrzeuge zunehmend zu einer höhren Leistungsabgabe umgebaut wurden, entstanden zum Teil erhebliche Wettbewerbsverzerrungen in der EU- Flotte und eine nicht kontrollierte Steigerung des Fischereiaufwandes in den Schutzzonen durch Nichtbeachtung der Vorschriften.

    Description: Experimental fishing trials were conducted in the Elbe Estuary using an experimental 3 m-standard beamtrawl. To avoid the by-catch of fish, a sorting grid was used. The elliptical grid was constructed of 6 mm diameter stainless steel bars with a spacing of 13 mm between the bars and housed in a cylindrical frame of 400 mm diameter. It was installed in the extension piece just in front of the codendangled at 45°, with a fish outlet at the top. A series of 10 tows of 15 minutes duration at a towing speed of 3 kn was done. The catch of the main codend was compared with the catch separated by the sorting grid. This achieved a reduction of 56 % of plaice (Pleuronectes platessa), 75 % of flounder (Platichthys flesus), 99 % of whiting (Merlangius merlangus), 94 % of cod (Gadus morhua) and49 % of smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) with a mean loss of 43 % of shrimps (Crangon crangon). English grid trials in the Humber estuary using a flapper set or guiding funnel in front of the sorting grid device demonstrated reasonable lower escapement rates for fish and shrimps.

    Description: Most microbiological methods require culture to allow organisms to recover or to selectively increase, and target organisms are identified by growth on specific agar media. Many cultural methods take several days to complete and even then the results require confirmation. Alternative techniques include the use of chromogenic and fluorogenic substances to identify bacteria as they are growing, selective capture using antibodies after short periods of growth, molecular techniques, and direct staining with or without flow cytometry for enumeration and identification. Future microbiologists may not use culture but depend on the use of specific probes and sophisticated detection systems.

    Description: The advent of molecular biology has had a dramatic impact on all aspects of biology, not least applied microbial ecology. Microbiological testing of water has traditionally depended largely on culture techniques. Growing understanding that only a small proportion of microbial species are culturable, and that many microorganisms may attain a viable but non-culturable state, has promoted the development of novel approaches to monitoring pathogens in the environment. This has been paralleled by an increased awareness of the surprising genetic diversity of natural microbial populations. By targeting gene sequences that are specific for particular microorganisms, for example genes that encode diagnostic enzymes, or species-specific domains of conserved genes such as 16S ribosomal RNA coding sequences (rrn genes), the problems of culture can be avoided. Technical developments, notably in the area of in vitro amplification of DNA using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), now permit routine detection and identification of specific microorganisms, even when present in very low numbers. Although the techniques of molecular biology have provided some very powerful tools for environmental microbiology, it should not be forgotten that these have their own drawbacks and biases in sampling. For example, molecular techniques are dependent on efficient lysis and recovery of nucleic acids from both vegetative forms and spores of microbial species that may differ radically when growing in the laboratory compared with the natural environment. Furthermore, PCR amplification can introduce its own bias depending on the nature of the oligonucleotide primers utilised. However, despite these potential caveats, it seems likely that a molecular biological approach, particularly with its potential for automation, will provide the mainstay of diagnostic technology for the foreseeable future.

    Description: The European Water Framework Directive requires member states to restore aquatic habitats to good ecological status (quality) by 2015. Good ecological status is defined as slightly different from high status, which, according to the Directive, means negligible human influence. This poses problems enough for restoration of natural habitats but artificial reservoirs are not excluded from the Directive. They must be restored to good ecological potential. The meaning of good ecological status is linked to that of 'high' ecological status, the pristine reference condition for aquatic habitats under the Directive. From the point of view of an ecologist, this is taken to mean the presence of four fundamental characteristics: nutrient parsimony, characteristic biological and physical structure, connectivity within a wider system and adequate size to give resilience of the biological communities to environmental change. These characteristics are strongly interrelated. Ecological potential must bear some relationship to ecological status but since the reference state for ecological quality is near absence of human impact, it is difficult to see how the criteria for ecological status can be applied to a completely man-made entity where the purpose of the dam is deliberately to interfere with the natural characteristics of a river or former natural lake. Rservoirs are disabled lakes, ususally lakcing the diversity and function provided by a littoral zone. Nonetheless, pragmatic approaches to increasing the biodiversity of reservours are reviewed and conclusions drawn as to the likely effectivemess of the legislation.
