    Description: Abstract
    Description: The model named EHFM_Earth_7200 was derived by layer-based forward modeling technique in ellipsoidal harmonics, the maximum degree of this model reaches 7200. The relief information was provided by Earth2014 relief model. EHFM_Earth_7200 provides very detailed (~3 km) information for the Earth’s short-scale gravity field, and it is expected to be able to augment or refine existing global gravity models. To meet the existing standard, here we provide spherical harmonic coefficients, which are transformed from original ellipsoidal harmonic coefficients. The maximum degree of the spherical harmonic coefficients is 7300.
    Description: Methods
    Description: - Compute global equiangular reduced latitude grids from degree 10800 Earth2014 SHCs and expanded these grids into EHCs. The grids are band-limited in spherical harmonics instead of in ellipsoidal harmonics so extra degrees beyond the truncation degree are also calculated. We obtained surface EHCs up to degree and order (d/o) 11000 but truncated them to d/o 7200. - Calculate potential models of three layers (crust, water and ice) separately from Earth2014 reliefs by new developed ellipsoidal harmonic forward modeling formulas. The densities of the three layers are 2670, 1030, and 917 kg/m^3. - Sum up results from the three layers and obtain EHFM_Earth_7200 ellipsoidal harmonic coefficients. - Convert ellipsoidal harmonic coefficients to spherical harmonic coefficients. The maximum degree of the spherical harmonic coefficients is 7300.

    Description: Abstract
    Description: The new time series of GRACE and GRACE-FO monthly solution HUST-Grace2024 is recently developed at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. During retrieving our model, the reprocessed GRACE L1b RL03 data and GRACE-FO RL04 data are used, and the newly de-aliasing product AOD1B RL07 is applied. In addition, a hybrid processing chain is applied to improve the quality of final solutions. Further details are presented in Zhou et al. (2024).     Description: On 20 March 2015, a total solar eclipse occurred over Ny-Ålesund (78.9° N, 11.9° E), Svalbard, in the high Arctic. It was the first time that the surface radiation components during the totality of a solar eclipse were measured by a Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) station. With the Ny-Ålesund long-term radiation data set as background (available at doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.150000), we present here the peculiarities of the radiation components and basic meteorology observed during the eclipse event. The supplementary data set contains the basic BSRN radiation and surface meteorological data in 1 min resolution for March 2015, and is available at doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.854326. The eclipse radiation data will be a useful auxiliary data set for further studies on micrometeorological surface-atmosphere exchange processes in the Svalbard environment, and may serve as a test case for radiative transfer studies.

    Description: Geochemical data were gained for short sediment cores from Maxwell Bay and Potter Cove (King George Island, Antarctica) in 2012 and 2013. We investigated the influence of different iron transport pathways and their effect on the early diagenetic cycling of this nutrient.     Description: Reactive iron (oxyhydr)oxide minerals preferentially undergo early diagenetic redox cycling which can result in the production of dissolved Fe(II), adsorption of Fe(II) onto particle surfaces, and the formation of authigenic Fe minerals. The partitioning of iron in sediments has traditionally been studied by applying sequential extractions that target operationally-defined iron phases. Here, we complement an existing sequential leaching method by developing a sample processing protocol for d56Fe analysis, which we subsequently use to study Fe phase-specific fractionation related to dissimilatory iron reduction in a modern marine sediment. Carbonate-Fe was extracted by acetate, easily reducible oxides (e.g. ferrihydrite and lepidocrocite) by hydroxylamine-HCl, reducible oxides (e.g. goethite and hematite) by dithionite-citrate, and magnetite by ammonium oxalate. Subsequently, the samples were repeatedly oxidized, heated and purified via Fe precipitation and column chromatography. The method was applied to surface sediments collected from the North Sea, south of the Island of Helgoland. The acetate-soluble fraction (targeting siderite and ankerite) showed a pronounced downcore d56Fe trend. This iron pool was most depleted in 56Fe close to the sediment-water interface, similar to trends observed for pore-water Fe(II). We interpret this pool as surface-reduced Fe(II), rather than siderite or ankerite, that was open to electron and atom exchange with the oxide surface. Common extractions using 0.5 M HCl or Na-dithionite alone may not resolve such trends, as they dissolve iron from isotopically distinct pools leading to a mixed signal. Na-dithionite leaching alone, for example, targets the sum of reducible Fe oxides that potentially differ in their isotopic fingerprint. Hence, the development of a sequential extraction Fe isotope protocol provides a new opportunity for detailed study of the behavior of iron in a wide-range of environmental settings.

The faithfulness with which sedimentary foraminifera record the isotopic signature of surface seawater Nd is difficult to explain given their variable and high Nd/Ca ratios, ratios that are often sedimentary foraminifera, ratios that are often much higher than is plausible for direct incorporation within the calcite structure. We present further data that demonstrate a similarly large range in Nd/Ca ratios in plankton tow foraminifera, a range that may be controlled by redox conditions in the water column. Cleaning experiments reveal, in common with earlier work, that large amounts of Nd are released by cleaning with both hydrazine and diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid, but that the Nd released at each step is of surface origin. While further detailed studies are required to verify the exact location of the surface isotopic signature and the key controls on foraminiferal Nd isotope systematics, these new data place the use of planktonic foraminifera as recorders of surface water Nd isotope ratios, and thus of variations in the past supply of Nd to the oceans from the continents via weathering and erosion, on a reasonably sure footing.

    Description: At Ny-Ålesund (78.9° N), Svalbard, surface radiation measurements of up- and downward short- and longwave radiation are operated since August 1992 in the frame of the Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN), complemented with surface and upper air meteorology since August 1993. The long-term observations are the base for a climatological presentation of the surface radiation data. Over the 21-year observation period, ongoing changes in the Arctic climate system are reflected. Particularly, the observations indicate a strong seasonality of surface warming and related changes in different radiation parameters. The annual mean temperature at Ny-Ålesund has risen by +1.3 ± 0.7 K per decade, with a maximum seasonal increase during the winter months of +3.1 ± 2.6 K per decade. At the same time, winter is also the season with the largest long-term changes in radiation, featuring an increase of +15.6 ± 11.6 W/m**2 per decade in the downward longwave radiation. Furthermore, changes in the reflected solar radiation during the months of snow melt indicate an earlier onset of the warm season by about 1 week compared to the beginning of the observations. The online available dataset of Ny-Ålesund surface radiation measurements provides a valuable data source for the validation of satellite instruments and climate models.

    Description: Rising atmospheric CO2 often triggers the production of plant phenolics, including many that serve as herbivore deterrents, digestion reducers, antimicrobials, or ultraviolet sunscreens. Such responses are predicted by popular models of plant defense, especially resource availability models which link carbon availability to phenolic biosynthesis. CO2 availability is also increasing in the oceans, where anthropogenic emissions cause ocean acidification, decreasing seawater pH and shifting the carbonate system towards further CO2 enrichment. Such conditions tend to increase seagrass productivity but may also increase rates of grazing on these marine plants. Here we show that high CO2 / low pH conditions of OA decrease, rather than increase, concentrations of phenolic protective substances in seagrasses and eurysaline marine plants. We observed a loss of simple and polymeric phenolics in the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa near a volcanic CO2 vent on the Island of Vulcano, Italy, where pH values decreased from 8.1 to 7.3 and pCO2 concentrations increased ten-fold. We observed similar responses in two estuarine species, Ruppia maritima and Potamogeton perfoliatus, in in situ Free-Ocean-Carbon-Enrichment experiments conducted in tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay, USA. These responses are strikingly different than those exhibited by terrestrial plants. The loss of phenolic substances may explain the higher-than-usual rates of grazing observed near undersea CO2 vents and suggests that ocean acidification may alter coastal carbon fluxes by affecting rates of decomposition, grazing, and disease. Our observations temper recent predictions that seagrasses would necessarily be "winners" in a high CO2 world.

    Description: The dataset includes solid-phase geochemistry data of sediment cores from Site C0023 (Hole A) that was recovered during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 370 in the Nankai Trough offshore Japan in the Pacific Ocean (Drilling vessel Chikyu). Site C0023 was established on 17 September 2016. Coring terminated on 3 November 2016. Solid-phase geochemistry data include bulk iron (Fe), sulfur (S) and aluminum (Al) contents, chromium reducible sulfur (CRS) as well as algal lipid biomarker concentrations and stable carbon isotopes of total organic carbon (δ13C-TOC). The bulk element contents were determined by performing total acid digestions (dissolution of dry sediment in a mixture of 65% HNO3 (3 ml), 30% HCl (2 ml), and 40% suprapur® HF (0.5 ml) in a CEM Mars Xpress microwave system). Sequential iron extractions were performed after Poulton and Canfield (2005) and Henkel et al. (2016) to quantify the reactive iron pools (Fe aca, sodium acetate extraction; Fe hyam, hydroxylamine-HCl extraction; Fe di-ct, sodium dithionite/sodium citrate extraction; Fe oxa, oxalate/oxalic acid extraction). We further determined the amounts of Al (Al aca, Al hyam, Al di-ct, Al oxa) and silicon (Si; Si aca, Si hyam, Si di-ct, Si oxa) released by the different extraction steps for a selection of samples. All elemental contents (except for CRS) were measured by inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES; iCAP 7400, Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.). CRS was extracted using a CrCl2 solution after Canfield et al. (1986) and Zhabina & Volkov (1978). All values are given in wt%. Algal lipid biomarker analysis was performed after Sturt et al. (2004) and HPLC-MS analyses after Becker et al. (2015). Biomarker concentrations are reported as the integrated peak area of the sum of all detected diols normalized to kg extracted sediment (PA/kg). Stable carbon isotopes of total organic carbon measurement occurred on an EA-IRMS system after complete decalcification of homogenized sediment samples with 10% HCl. The δ13C-TOC values are expressed relative to VPDB (Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite).

    Description: The 14C ages of planktonic foraminifers Globigerinoides sacculifer bracketing the Younger Dryas in a d18O record of Globigerinoides ruber from a laminated sediment core on the Pakistani continental margin suggest that surface reservoir ages in the Arabian Sea were in excess of 1000 years during the deglaciation. A least squares error fit of a detailed 14C chronology to the (atmospheric) tree ring record gave variable early Holocene reservoir ages between 780 and 1120 years, well above the prebomb value of 640 years. Mid-Holocene reservoir ages are less well constrained but were probably closer to the prebomb value. The method used to fit individual core sections to the tree ring record was designed to require only a rough a priori estimate of the time spans, which in the core presented here were taken from each section's range of 14C ages. A significant 220-year quasi-oscillation was present in the d18O record during the early Holocene but not thereafter. This frequency and amplitude pattern resembles an early Holocene 207- to 227-year oscillation previously observed in the atmospheric 14C record, which is generally interpreted as reflecting solar irradiance variability. An early Holocene climate event at 8150-8400 calendar years B.P. observed elsewhere within the Asian-East African monsoon system was again found in our record, suggesting a reduction in precipitation over NW India and Pakistan.

    Description: Iron stable isotope signatures (d56Fe) in hemolymph (bivalve blood) of the Antarctic bivalve Laternula elliptica were analyzed by Multiple Collector-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) to test whether the isotopic fingerprint can be tracked back to the predominant sources of the assimilated Fe. An earlier investigation of Fe concentrations in L. elliptica hemolymph suggested that an assimilation of reactive and bioavailable Fe (oxyhydr)oxide particles (i.e. ferrihydrite), precipitated from pore water Fe around the benthic boundary, is responsible for the high Fe concentration in L. elliptica (Poigner et al., 2013, doi:10.1016/j.ecss.2013.10.027). At two stations in Potter Cove (King George Island, Antarctica) bivalve hemolymph showed mean d56Fe values of -1.19 ± 0.34 per mil and -1.04 ± 0.39 per mil, respectively, which is between 0.5 per mil and 0.85 per mil lighter than the pool of easily reducible Fe (oxyhydr)oxides of the surface sediments (-0.3 per mil to -0.6 per mil). This is in agreement with the enrichment of lighter Fe isotopes at higher trophic levels, resulting from the preferential assimilation of light isotopes from nutrition. Nevertheless, d56Fe hemolymph values from both stations showed a high variability, ranging between -0.21 per mil (value close to unaltered/primary Fe(oxyhydr)oxide minerals) and -1.91 per mil (typical for pore water Fe or diagenetic Fe precipitates), which we interpret as a "mixed" d56Fe signature caused by Fe assimilation from different sources with varying Fe contents and d56Fe values. Furthermore, mass dependent Fe fractionation related to physiological processes within the bivalve cannot be ruled out. This is the first study addressing the potential of Fe isotopes for tracing back food sources of bivalves.

    Description: In this study we present a sea surface temperature (SST) record from the western Arabian Sea for the last 20,000 years. We produced centennial-scale d18O and Mg/Ca SST time series of core NIOP929 with focus on the glacial-interglacial transition. The western Arabian Sea is influenced by the seasonal NE and SW monsoon wind systems. Lowest SSTs occur during the SW monsoon season because of upwelling of cold water, and highest SSTs can be found in the low-productivity intermonsoon season. The Mg/Ca-based temperature record reflects the integrated SST of the SW and NE monsoon seasons. The results show a glacial-interglacial SST difference of ~2°C, which is corroborated by findings from other Arabian Sea cores. At 19 ka B.P. a yet undescribed warm event of several hundred years duration is found, which is also reflected in the d18O record. A second centennial-scale high SST/low d18O event is observed at 17 ka B.P. This event forms the onset of the stepwise yet persistent trend toward Holocene temperatures. Highest Mg/Ca-derived SSTs in the NIOP929 record occurred between 13 and 10 ka B.P. Interglacial SST is ~24°C, indicating influence of upwelling. The onset of Arabian Sea warming occurs when the North Atlantic is experiencing minimum temperatures. The rapid temperature variations at 19, 17, and 13 ka B.P. are difficult to explain with monsoon changes alone and are most likely also linked to regional hydrographic changes, such as trade wind induced variations in warm water advection.

    Description: International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1490 in the Western Pacific Warm Pool (05°48.95ʹN, 142°39.27ʹE, 2341 m water depth) provides the opportunity to directly compare an astronomically tuned benthic foraminiferal isotope cyclostratigraphy with biostratigraphic datums and paleomagnetic reversals over the interval 13.7 to 8.6 Ma as well as to reconstruct the evolution of intermediate-deep water masses across the middle to late Miocene Carbonate Crash. The astronomically tuned delta 18O derived ages for magnetochrons identified between 13.6 and 9.3 Ma during IODP Expedition 363 are in good agreement (mean deviation of 17 ±4 kyr) with ages reported in the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale of the Geologic Time Scale (GPTS2020), except over the interval 11.7 to 11.0 Ma that is characterized by poorly defined magnetization. The delta 18O based astrochronology at Site U1490 also closely matches that from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1146 in the South China Sea and IODP Site U1443 in the equatorial Indian Ocean, allowing evaluation of middle to late Miocene changes of inter-ocean intermediate to deep water delta 13C gradients on orbital timescales. An increase in the delta 13C gradient between Sites 1146 and U1490 from ~12.4 to 10.4 Ma suggests that changes in Pacific Ocean circulation contributed to carbonate depletion during the Carbonate Crash. After 10.5 Ma, a decrease in the meridional delta 13C gradient between Sites U1490 and 1146 indicates spreading of a more uniform central Pacific intermediate-deep water mass, exhibiting similarity to the equatorial Indian Ocean deep water mass at Site U1443. Improved preservation of thin-walled foraminiferal tests and increases in sedimentation rates and coarse fraction percentages mark the recovery of the marine carbonate system and the onset of the Biogenic Bloom after ~9.3 Ma.

    Description: Mesoscale eddies are important for many aspects of the dynamics of the Arctic Ocean. These include the maintenance of the halocline and the Atlantic Water boundary current through lateral eddy fluxes, shelf-basin exchanges, transport of biological material and sea ice, and the modification of the sea-ice distribution. Here we review what is known about the mesoscale variability and its impacts in the Arctic Ocean in the context of an Arctic Ocean responding rapidly to climate change. In addition, we present the first quantification of eddy kinetic energy (EKE) from moored observations across the entire Arctic Ocean, which we compare to output from an eddy resolving numerical model. We show that EKE is largest in the northern Nordic Seas/Fram Strait and it is also elevated along the shelfbreak of the Arctic Circumpolar Boundary Current, especially in the Beaufort Sea. In the central basins it is 100-1000 times lower. Except for the region affected by southward sea-ice export south of Fram Strait, EKE is stronger when sea-ice concentration is low compared to dense ice cover. Areas where conditions typical in the Atlantic and Pacific prevail will increase. Hence, we conclude that the future Arctic Ocean will feature more energetic mesoscale variability. This table provides (eddy) kinetic energy in the Arctic Ocean calculated from moorings and a numerical model across the entire record and averaged over certain conditions (seasons, ice concentration). The calculations are explained in the manuscript (Eddies and the distribution of eddy kinetic energy in the Arctic Ocean). The used mooring data was compiled from six different sources as listed below and identified in the table based on the Source ID.

    Description: Data presented here were collected between Januar 2021 to November 2021 within the research unit DynaCom (Spatial community ecology in highly dynamic landscapes: From island biogeography to metaecosystems, https://uol.de/dynacom/) of the Universities of Oldenburg, Göttingen, and Münster, the iDiv Leipzig and the Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer. Experimental islands and saltmarsh enclosed plots were created in the back barrier tidal flat and in the saltmarsh zone of the island of Spiekeroog. Sediment samples for the determination of pH, water content and loss on ignition were taken bi-/monthly in surface sediments (0-3 cm depth). Samples were measured in the laboratory within two months after sampling.

    Description: This data set presents Th/U ages from a speleothem deposit in the Eastern Desert of Egypt at Saqia Cave and mean values of δ13C and δ18O for the respective speleothem growth phases. The presence and absence of speleothem deposition in (hyper-) arid environments can be regarded as an on-off situation. Deposition take place during phases of sufficient water availability and vegetation growth (“on”), whereas speleothem growth is absent under an arid climate (“off”). δ13C and δ18O isotope composition of each dated section is used for insights into the moisture source in the Eastern Desert and possible changes in the dominance of C3/C4 type vegetation. Sample collection was done as part of the Collaborative Research Centre 806 “Our Way to Europe”. Uranium-series dating was conducted at the Institute for Environmental Physics at Heidelberg University with isotope measurements using either thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (TIMS Finnigan MAT 262 RPQ) or multi-collector inductively coupled-plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS, Thermo Scientific Neptune Plus. Measurement of δ13C and δ18O using a KIEL IV carbonate device connected to a MAT253 gas mass spectrometer installed at the Institute for Geology and Mineralogy in Cologne. Th/U ages range from 185.7 ± 4.3 ka to 83.2 ± 2.1 ka, with most of the dating's fall into MIS 5 (18 out of 21) and cover all substages of MIS 5. The δ18O signature from Saqia Cave ranges between −10.90‰ and −11.73‰ with a mean of −11,22 ± 0,29‰. δ13C is more variable ranging between −2,58‰ and −7.07‰ with a mean value of −5.67 ± 1.2‰. δ13C values during MIS 5e are lower during MIS 5e and higher during MIS 5d and 5b, although absolute lowest δ13C values from one sample of −7.6‰ exists during MIS 5d.

Here, we use a total of 400 surface samples (252 from this work and 148 from previous studies), covering the entire salinity end member region, to assess the effect of seawater salinity and temperature on δ¹⁸Oruber in the northern Indian Ocean. For δ¹⁸O analysis, 10-15 well preserved shells of Globigerinoides ruber white variety, were picked from 250-355 μm size range. The stable oxygen isotopic ratio was measured by using Finnigan MAT 253 isotope ratio mass spectrometer, coupled with Kiel IV automated carbonate preparation device. The precision of oxygen isotope measurements was better than 0.08‰. The analyzed surface δ¹⁸Oruber very well mimics the expected δ¹⁸O calcite estimated from the modern seawater parameters (temperature, salinity and seawater δ¹⁸O). We report a large diagenetic overprinting of δ18Oruber in the surface sediments with an increase of 0.18‰ per kilometer increase in water depth. The salinity exerts the major control on δ¹⁸Oruber (R2 = 0.63) in the northern Indian Ocean, with an increase of 0.29‰ per unit increase in salinity. The relationship between temperature and salinity corrected δ¹⁸Oruber (δ¹⁸Oruber - δ¹⁸Osw) in the northern Indian Ocean [T= -0.59*(δ¹⁸Oruber - δ¹⁸Osw) + 26.40] is different than reported previously based on the global compilation of plankton tow δ¹⁸Oruber data. The revised equations will help in better paleoclimatic reconstruction from the northern Indian Ocean.

    Description: This dataset includes total organic carbon (TOC), stable carbon isotope (δ13C), and radiocarbon activity (expressed as Fm) of TOC, as well as mineral surface area (SA), mean grain size, and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) of 89 surface sediment samples from the northern South China Sea. The samples were collected through the German R/V SONNE cruises SO50, SO72A, SO95, and SO132 during July–September 1987, October–November 1990, April–June 1994, and June–July 1998, respectively. TOC and stable carbon isotope (δ13C) of the decarbonated samples were measured by an elemental analyzer interfaced with an isotope ratio mass spectrometer (EA-IRMS; Flash EA 1112 HT-Delta V Advantage). The standard deviations of TOC content and δ13C were 0.03% and 0.08‰, respectively, by replicate measurements of the same acetanilide standard samples. Radiocarbon activity of carbonate free sediment were measured using a Mini Carbon Dating System (MICADAS) accelerated mass spectrometry at the Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics, ETH Zürich. Radiocarbon data are reported as "fraction modern" (Fm), representing the deviations of the 14C/12C ratio from 95% modern oxalic acid standard. The absolute error of Fm is better than ±0.01. The conventional radiocarbon ages are calculated based on the equation of t = –8033 ln (Fm), in years Before Present (yr BP, where present is 1950 AD). Organic-free mineral surface area (SA) was measured using a 5-point Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) nitrogen adsorption method on NOVA 4000 SA analyzer (Quantachrome Instrument). The standard deviations of two reference minerals are 0.03 and 0.14 m2 g–1, respectively. The sample was then performed for mean grain size analysis using a laser Particle Size Analyzer (Malvern Mastersizer 2000). The calcium carbonate content of the samples was determined by a vacuum-gasometric system with a relative accuracy of ±0.7%.

The samples from the gravity cores were obtained from working and in some cases archive halves with the help of the GeoB Core Collection at the MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen, Germany. 100 fresh samples from GeoB9512-5 and 31 samples of GeoB9506-1 were (1) washed with deionized water through a 63 µm sieve, then (2) dried for less than 24 hours at 45°C, and (3) dry sieved through 63 µm, 125 µm, 150 µm, and 250 µm. Finally, the washed sediment with a size 〉150 µm was used to retrieve at least 250 specimens when possible for each sample. The remaining number of analyzed samples from GeoB9506-1 (33 samples) and core tops included in this research were provided by the GeoB Core Repository collection archive and consisted of washed sediments 〉150 µm. Washed samples from the SE Atlantic were kindly provided by Dr. Enno Schefuss (Scheefuss et al., 2004). Taxonomy identification was made at a genus level based on Loeblich, A. R. and Tappan, H. (1987) and Rönnfeld, W. (2020)), while species identification was based on various references including Brady, H. B. (1884), Van Morkhoven et al. (1986) and Holbourn et al. (2013). A total of 48.297 benthic foraminifera were recovered and analyzed. 238 taxonomical units were identified, including 112 genera and 182 species. The data was used to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions of bottom water during the last deglaciation in the NE Atlantic. The reported microhabitats and oxygen conditions for most species were extracted from various references including Murray (1991), Murray (2006) Kaiho (1994) and Kranner et al. (2022) among others.
