    Notes: 1,6-Heptadiene Nickel(0) Complexes:rac/meso-(μ-η2,η2-C7{Ni(η 2,η2-C7H12)}2 und L-Ni(η2,η2-C7H12)Ni(CDT) dissolves in 1,6-heptadiene with displacement of the CDT to yield the dinuclear homoleptic product rac/meso-(μ- η2,η2-C7H12){Ni(η2, η2-C7H12)}2 (1) as a mixture of stereoisomers, in which the nickel atoms are trigonal-planar coordinated by a chelating 1,6-diene ligand and one C=C bond of a bridging diene ligand. The stereoisomers differ in the coordination mode of the bridging diene ligand.-The bridging diene ligand in 1 can be displaced by various donor/acceptor molecules. In pentane, 1 reacts with ethene to yield a solution of mononuclear (C2H4)Ni(η2,η2-C7H12) (2). With alkynes unstable complexes are formed of which the anticipated ethyne derivative (C2H2)Ni(η2,η2-C7H12) (3) decomposes explosively at - 100°C. With isocyanides, methylenephosphoranes, methyllithium, amines, pyridines, phosphanes, and phosphites (i.e. C, N, P donors) crystalline complexes of type L-Ni(η2.η2 C7H12) have been obtained, of which the derivatives with L=tBuN = C 4, Me3PCH2 5, LiCH3 6, C7H13N7, C5H5N 8, Me3P 9, iPr3P 10, Ph3P 11, (PhO)3P 12 are characterized here. For 11 the crystal structure has been determined.

    Notes: A broad study of the 59Co NMR of cobalt(III) porphyrin complexes with axial amine ligands in a variety of solvents is reported. The data are presented in tabular form, as are the numerical correlations of chemical shift, δ, and line width, ω1/2, using the Kamlet-Taft equation. The dependence of δ and ω1/2 on ligand substituents is discussed. Solvent data, including mixed solvent results, indicate that general factors such as acidity, basicity, polarity and hydrogen-bonding capability are important, as are the specific nature of the functional groups on the ligands and the solvent.

    Notes: In this progress report a new principle is described for the synthesis of multimetal π-complexes with hitherto unknown structural features. The nickel(0)-olefin complexes 1,5,9-cyclododecatrienenickel(0) and bis(1,5-cyclooctadiene)nickel(0) react unexpectedly with main-group metals, in particular alkali metals, their hydrides, and organometallic compounds, to give nickelligand species with a surplus charge. These species endeavor to transfer the excess charge onto π-ligands such as olefins or dinitrogen. Multimetal complexes with electron rich transition metal π-ligand units can, in addition, be prepared from metallocenes, alkali metals, and unsaturated compounds. The syntheses, structures, and reactions of this new class of substances will be summarized.

    Notes: In diesem Fortschrittsbericht wird ein neues Syntheseprinzip für Multimetall-π-Komplexe mit bisher nicht bekannten Strukturelementen diskutiert. Überraschenderweise reagieren die Olefin-Nickel(0)-Komplexe 1,5,9-Cyclododecatriennickel(0) und Bis(1,5-cyclooctadien)nickel(0) mit Hauptgruppenmetallen, insbesondere Alkalimetallen sowie deren Hydriden oder Organometall-Verbindungen, zu Nickel-Ligand-Einheiten mit Überschußladung. Diese Einheiten sind bestrebt, die Überschußladung auf π-Liganden wie Olefine oder Distickstoff weiterzugeben. Darüber hinaus konnten Multimetallkomplexe mit elektronenreichen Übergangsmetall-π-Ligand-Einheiten aus Metallocenen, Alkalimetallen und ungesättigten Verbindungen erhalten werden. Synthesen, Strukturen und Reaktionen dieser neuen Substanzklassen werden zusammenfassend besprochen.

    Description: The sea surface microlayer (SML) is located at the air-sea interface, with microorganisms and organic matter in the SML influencing air-sea exchange processes. Yet understanding of the SML bacterial (bacterioneuston) community composition and assembly remains limited. Availability of organic matter, UV radiation and wind speed have previously been suggested to influence the community composition of bacterioneuston. Another mechanism potentially controlling bacterioneuston dynamics is bacterioplankton attached to gel-like particles that ascend through the water column into the SML. We analyzed the bacterial community composition, Transparent Exopolymer Particles (TEP) abundance and nutrient concentrations in the surface waters of the Peruvian upwelling region. The bacterioneuston and bacterioplankton communities were similar, suggesting a close spatial coupling. Four Bacteroidetes families were significantly enriched in the SML, two of them, the Flavobacteriaceae and Cryomorphaceae, were found to comprise the majority of SML-enriched operational taxonomic units (OTUs). The enrichment of these families was controlled by a variety of environmental factors. The SML-enriched bacterial families were negatively correlated with water temperature and wind speed in the SML and positively correlated with nutrient concentrations, salinity and TEP in the underlying water (ULW). The correlations with nutrient concentrations and salinity suggest that the enriched bacterial families were more abundant at the upwelling stations.

    Notes: Hundert Jahre nickelorganischer Chemie ergeben eine Geschichte sorgfältig beobachteter Zufälle, konsequenter Schlüsse und daraus resultierender technischer Anwendungen, insgesamt aber ein Füllhorn der Erkenntnis. Die Historie umfaßt die Namen Mond, Sabatier, Reppe und Ziegler, deren ursprüngliche Beobachtungen zum Teil noch heute unvermindert aktuell sind, da moderne Methoden zur Klärung ehemals ungelöster Probleme zur Verfügung stehen. So konnte z.B. eine von Sabatier angestrebte Synthese 70 Jahre später realisiert werden. Der Weg von der Entdeckung der nickelkatalysierten Hydrierung zu hoch enantioselektiv wirkenden Homogenkatalysatoren ist Teil der hier geschilderten Entwicklung.

    Description: Barium (Ba) isotopes are a promising new tracer for riverine freshwater input to the ocean and marine biogeochemical cycling. However, many processes that affect Ba cycling at continental margins have not yet been investigated with respect to Ba isotope fractionation. Here, we present a comprehensive data set of Ba concentration and isotope data for water column, pore water and sediment samples from Kiel Bight, a seasonally stratified and hypoxic fjord in the southwestern Baltic Sea. The surface water Ba concentration and Ba isotope inventory of the water column can generally be explained by mixing of riverine freshwater and Atlantic seawater. However, the deep-water below the seasonal pycnocline (10 - 15 m water depth) is characterized by a pronounced positive Ba concentration anomaly (up to 915 nM) that is accompanied by a δ138Ba of ~+0.25 ‰, which is lighter than expected from the seawater-freshwater mixing line (Ba: 77 nM, δ138Ba: +0.32 ‰ at a salinity of 18). Pore water profiles indicate a Ba flux across the sediment-water interface, which contributes to the enrichment in isotopically light Ba in the deep-water. Pore waters of surface sediments and deep-waters are oversaturated with respect to barite. Therefore, barite dissolution is unlikely to account for the benthic Ba flux. Water column Ba concentrations closely correlate with those of the nutrients phosphate and silica, which are removed from surface waters by biological processes and recycled from the sediment by diffusion across the sediment-water interface. As nutrient-to-Ba ratios differ among sites and from those observed in open-marine systems, we propose that Ba is removed from surface waters by adsorption onto biogenic particles (rather than assimilation) and regenerated within surface sediments upon organic matter degradation. Pore water data for subsurface sediments in Kiel Bight indicate preferential transfer of isotopically heavy Ba into an authigenic phase during early diagenesis. Quantifying the burial flux associated with this authigenic Ba phase along continental margins could potentially help to settle the isotopic imbalance between known Ba source and sink fluxes in the ocean.

    Notes: The binding of the antitumor agent CC-1065 to a variety of poly- and oligonucleotides was studied by electronic absorption, CD, and resistance to removal by Sephadex column chromatography. Competitive binding experiments between CC-1065 and netropsin were carried out with calf-thymus DNA, poly(dI-dC) · poly(dI-dC), poly(dI) · poly(dC), poly(rA) · poly(dT), poly(dA- dC) · poly(dG-dT), and poly(dA) · 2poly(dT). CC-1065 binds to polynucleotides by three mechanisms. In the first, CC-1065 binds only weakly, as judged by the induction of zero or very weak CD spectra and low resistance to extraction of drug from the polynucleotide by Sephadex chromatography. In the second and third mechanisms, CC-1065 binds strongly, as judged by the induction of two distinct, intense CD spectra and high resistance to extraction of drug from the polynucleotide, by Sephadex chromatography in both cases. The species bound by the second mechanism converts to that bound by the third mechanism with varying kinetics, which depend both on the base-pair sequence and composition of the polynucleotide. Competitive binding experiments with netropsin show that CC-1065 binds strongly in the minor groove of DNA by the second and third mechanisms of binding. Netropsin can displace CC-1065 that is bound by the second mechanism but not that bound by the third mechanism. CC-1065 binds preferentially to B-form duplex DNA and weakly (by the first binding mechanism) or not at all to RNA, DNA, and RNA-DNA polynucleotides which adopt the A-form conformation or to single-strand DNA. This correlation of strong binding of CC-1065 to B-form duplex DNA is consistent with x-ray data, which suggest an anomalous structure for poly(dI) · poly(rC), as compared with poly(rI) · poly(dC) (A-form) and poly(dI) · poly(dC) (B-form). The binding data indicate that poly(rA) · poly(dU) takes the B-form secondary structure like poly(rA) · poly(dT). Triple-stranded poly(dA) · 2poly(dT) and poly(dA) · 2poly(dU), which are considered to adopt the A-form conformation, bind CC-1065 strongly. Netropsin, which also shows a binding preference for B-form polynucleotides, also binds to poly(dA) · 2poly(dT) and occupies the same binding site as CC-1065. These binding studies are consistent with results of x-ray studies, which suggest that A-form triplex DNA retains some structural features of B-form DNA that are not present in A-form duplex DNA; i.e., the axial rise per nucleotide and the base tilt. Triple-stranded poly(dA) · 2poly(rU) does not bind CC-1065 strongly but has nearly the same conformation as poly(dA) · 2poly(dT) based on x-ray analysis. This suggests that the 2′-OH group of the poly(rU) strands interferes with CC-1065 binding to this polynucleotide. The same type of interference may occur for other RNA and DNA-RNA polynucleotides that bind CC-1065 weakly.

    Notes: Bis(cyclopentadienyl)methane-Bridged Dinuclear Complexes, IV[1].  -  Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Dinuclear Rhodium and Iridium Complexes in the Oxidation State +I and +III with the Bis(cyclopentadienyl)methane Dianion as Bridging LigandThe rhodium compounds [CH2(C5H4)2][Rh(L)(C2H4)]2 (2, 4) were prepared from [RhCl(L)(C2H4)]2 (1, 3) and CH2(C5H4)2Li2 in 92 and 73% yield, respectively. The reaction of 4 with Cl2, Br2, and I2 led to the almost quantitative formation of the dihalogeno derivatives [CH2(C5H4)2][RhX2(PiPr3)]2 (6-8), which on treatment with excess NaBH4 and methanol gave the dihydride [CH2(C5H4)2][RhH2(PiPr3)]2 (10). From [RhCl(C8H14)2]2 (12), PiPr3, and CH2(C5H5)2 the chloro(hydrido)rhodium complex [CH2(C5H4)2][RhH(Cl)(PiPr3)]2 (13) was obtained. Protonation of 10 with CF3CO2H in the presence of NH4PF6 gave the PF6 salt of the hydrido-bridged cation {[CH2(C5H4)2]-[RhH(PiPr3)]2(μ-H)}+ (14) of which the crystal structure was determined. In solution, fluxional behavior of the cation was observed. The dimethyl compound [CH2(C5H4)2][Rh(CH3)2-(PiPr3)]2 (17), prepared from 6, 7, or 8 and LiCH3 or CH3MgI in 80% yield, reacted with CF3CO2H at  -  78° C to give the tri-fluoroacetato derivative 18; this on treatment with P(OMe)3 and dmpe formed the dicationic complexes 19 and 20, respectively. The dinuclear iridium compounds [CH2(C5H4)2]-[Ir(olefin)2]2 (26, 27) and [CH2(C5H4)2][Ir(C8H12)]2 (28) were prepared from [IrCl(L)2]2 (23-25) and CH2(C5H4)2Li2 and used for the synthesis of {[CH2(C5H4)2][IrX2]2}n (29, 30). Compounds 29 and 30 served as starting materials for the preparation of the dinuclear derivatives [CH2(C5H4)2][IrX2(L)]2 (31-34) and {[CH2(C5H4)2][IrBr2]2(μ-dipy)} (35) and finally also for the dihydrido complex [CH2(C5H4)2][IrH2(PiPr3)]2 (36).

    Description: A number of oil- and gas-producing leases have been operating in Italy in the last decades, many of which are located in the surroundings of tectonically active regions. Identifying human-induced seismicity in areas with high levels of natural seismicity is a difficult task for which virtually any result can be a source of controversy. We implemented a large-scale analysis aiming at tracking significant departures of background seismicity from a stationary behavior around active oil and gas development leases in Italy. We analyzed seismicity rates before and after hydrocarbon peak production in six oil-producing and 43 gas-producing leases, and evaluate the significance of possible seismicity rate changes. In a considerable number of cases seismicity rate results stationary. None of the observed cases of seismicity rate increase after the peak production is statistically significant (at a s.l. = 0.05). Conversely, considering cases of seismicity rate decrease after peak production, our results suggest that the seismicity rate reduction is statistically significant (s.l. = 0.05) around one oil-producing lease (Val d’Agri, Basilicata) and around a cluster of gas-producing leases in Sicily. Our results put in evidence correlated changes between the rates of shallow seismicity and hydrocarbon production in these areas, which are then identified as hotspots requiring more detailed research; assessing actual causal relationships between these processes will require further physically-based modelling. If a physical causative link between these processes exists, then the observed seismicity rate reduction could either be due to increased seismicity during the progressive increase in production before reaching its maximum, or to an actual seismicity rate reduction after that peak. Considering that there is evidence of seismicity occurring before the start of hydrocarbon production, which contrasts with the evident reduction of events observed after the peak production, we think it likely that the seismicity inhibition is a plausible hypothesis. Using a simple model we also calculate Coulomb stress changes in planes optimally oriented for failure, and we show that under some conditions the inhibition of seismicity is feasible in at least one of these cases. We conclude that more efforts to study the mechanisms and the possible consequences of anthropogenically-driven seismicity inhibition are required.

    Notes: Charge-Transfer Complexes of Metal Dithiolenes, XIII[1]. - cis-trans-Photoisomerisable Viologens as Redoxactive Acceptors  -  Synthesis and Electrical ConductivityIon Pair Charge-Transfer (IPCT) complexes of the type [A2+[ML2]2-} (1a-f to 4a-f) are synthesized from dianionic metal dithiolenes [M = Ni, Zn, L = cis-1,2-dicyano-1,2-ethene-dithiolate (mnt2-), 2-thioxo-1,3-dithiol-4,5-dithiolate (dmit2-)] and dicationic viologens [A2+ = 4,4′-(1,2-ethenediyl)bis(1-alkylpyridinium)]. The acceptors can exist as cis/trans isomers and may have coordinating properties in the case of 1-cyanoalkyl groups. The IPCT bands are in the range of 500 to 1200 nm and their energy follows the Hush-Marcus relation. For the nickel complexes the reorganization energy amounts to 73, for the zinc compounds to 115 kJ/mol. As shown by X-ray analysis of {A2+[Ni(mnt)2]2-} (2d), A2+ = trans-4,4′-(1,2-ethenediyl)-bis[1-(3-cyanopropyl)pyridinium], the structure consists of stacks of alternating donors and acceptors with a typical plane-to-plane distance of 350 pm. There is no interaction between the cyano group of the acceptor and the nickel atom of the donor. The electrical conductivities of the nickel compounds are in the range of 5 · 10-6 to 3 · 10-11 Ω-1 cm-1, and the corresponding activation energies vary from 0.24 to 0.61 eV. For the dmit complexes these values agree well with the free activation enthalpy of the electron transfer reaction A2+ + [ML2]2- → A+ + [ML2]- calculated from the Hush-Marcus model. This suggests that charge carrier generation occurs by electron transfer. When a trans acceptor is replaced by its cis isomer in [A2+[NiL2]2-}, conductivity changes from 5 · 10-7 to 5 · 10-6 Ω-1 cm-1 and the activation energy from 0.43 to 0.24 eV, when L - dmit2- but stays at about 1 · 10-8 Ω-1 cm-1 for L = mnt2-.

    Description: Coastal upwelling areas are extraordinarily productive environments where prokaryotic communities, the principal remineralizers of dissolved organic matter (DOM), rapidly respond to phytoplankton bloom and decay dynamics. Nevertheless, the extent of variability of key microbial functions in such dynamic waters remains largely unconstrained. Our metatranscriptomics analyses of 162 marker genes encoding ecologically relevant prokaryotic functions showed distinct spatial-temporal patterns in the NW Iberian Peninsula upwelling area. Short-term (daily) changes in specific bacterial functions associated with changes in biotic and abiotic factors were superimposed on seasonal variability. Taxonomic and functional specialization of prokaryotic communities, based mostly on different resource acquisition strategies, was observed. Our results uncovered the potential influence of prokaryotic functioning on phytoplankton bloom composition and development (e.g., Cellvibrionales and Flavobacteriales increased relative gene expression related to vitamin B12 and siderophore metabolisms during Chaetoceros and Dinophyceae summer blooms). Notably, bacterial adjustments to C- or N-limitation and DMSP availability during summer phytoplankton blooms and different spatial-temporal patterns of variability in the expression of genes with different phosphate affinity indicated a complex role of resource availability in structuring bacterial communities in this upwelling system. Also, a crucial role of Cellvibrionales in the degradation of DOM (carbohydrate metabolism, TCA cycle, proteorhodopsin, ammonium, and phosphate uptake genes) during the summer phytoplankton bloom was found. Overall, this dataset revealed an intertwined mosaic of microbial interactions and nutrient utilization patterns along a spatial-temporal gradient that needs to be considered if we aim to understand the biogeochemical processes in some of the most productive ecosystems in the world´s oceans.

    Description: Carbohydrates represent an important fraction of labile and semi-labile marine organic matter that is mainly comprised of exopolymeric substances derived from phytoplankton exudation and decay. This study investigates the composition of total combined carbohydrates (tCCHO; 〉1 kDa) and the community development of free-living (0.2–3 μm) and particle-associated (PA) (3–10 μm) bacterioplankton during a spring phytoplankton bloom in the southern North Sea. Furthermore, rates were determined for the extracellular enzymatic hydrolysis that catalyzes the initial step in bacterial organic matter remineralization. Concentrations of tCCHO greatly increased during bloom development, while the composition showed only minor changes over time. The combined concentration of glucose, galactose, fucose, rhamnose, galactosamine, glucosamine, and glucuronic acid in tCCHO was a significant factor shaping the community composition of the PA bacteria. The richness of PA bacteria greatly increased in the post-bloom phase. At the same time, the increase in extracellular β-glucosidase activity was sufficient to explain the observed decrease in tCCHO, indicating the efficient utilization of carbohydrates by the bacterioplankton community during the post-bloom phase. Our results suggest that carbohydrate concentration and composition are important factors in the multifactorial environmental control of bacterioplankton succession and the enzymatic hydrolysis of organic matter during phytoplankton blooms.

    Notes: The 270 MHz n.m.r. spectra of phosphoserine (PSer) have been measured and completely analysed for seven pD values. The resulting vicinal coupling constants 3J(HαHβ) and 3J(PHβ) are used to discuss the conformations of PSer with respect to the (Hα)—Cα—Cβ—(O) and (Cα)—Cβ—O—(P) bond axes. The all-trans conformer predominates for all pD values, with its fractional population being minimal at pD values close to neutrality. The Cβ—O bond rotamer populations agree reasonably well with those obtained from 13C investigations.

    Notes: One hundred years of organonickel chemistry have generated a wealth of new knowledge and a history of examples of accidental discoveries which have finally led to industrial applications. The historical development is associated with the names of Mond, Sabatier, Reppe and Ziegler and, with the methods and techniques available today, many of the original discoveries and unsolved problems are attracting renewed attention. For example, 70 years were to go by before a synthesis first conceived by Sabatier could finally be realized. The path leading from nickel-catalyzed hydrogenation to highly enantioselective homogeneous catalysts is one of the contributions to organonickel chemistry which is described here.

Epoxidharze ergeben optimale Resultate. Es besteht ein zunehmender Bedarf, dieselbe Technik für Aluminium anzuwenden, speziell für die Mischbauweise Eisen/Aluminium bei Autokarosserien. Allerdings kann dieses Metall durch die OH- -Ionen angegriffen werden, die bei der kathodischen Elektrolyse von Wasser gemäß H2O + e- → ½ H2 + OH entstehen. Die. Al2O · xH2O Schutzschicht kann sich langsam auflösen als Aluminat, und dann reagiert das Al-Metall schnell mit Wasser unter Bildung des dreifachen Volumens an Wasserstoff, wobei die oxidische Schicht wiederhergestellt wird. Demgemäß ist die Bruttoreaktion für die kathodische Korrosion des Al gegeben durch: Al + 2H2O + e- → AlO2- + 2H2.Es ist zu erwarten, daß die Änderungen an der Phasengrenze Al/AlOOH/Lack und die Akkumulation von hydrolisiertem Aluminat im Überzug unter anderem auch das Korrosionsschutzverhalten der Lackschichten beeinflussen könnten. Eine systematische Untersuchung des Einfusses von vier verschiedenen technischen Epoxidharzen von BASF Lacke & Farben AG (l)-(4) mit ihren individuellen Pigmentsystemen, wobei das eine für den Lack 3 frei von Bleisilikat war, wurde unternommen. Sieben verschiedene Aluminium (Legierungs) Substrate warden verwendet. Die Art der Vorbehandlung war in den meisten Fällen eine Zinkphosphatierung. Drei Standard-Korrosionstests für die konventionelle Korrosion (KK) und eine für Filiformkorrosion (FFK) wurden angewandt und standardmäßig ausgewertet.     Notes: Cathodic deposition of paint (CDP) is Well introduced for the industrial coating of primers onto steel since nearly two decades. Epoxy resins provide optimum results. There is an increasing demand to apply the same technique for aluminium, especially for mixed constructions Fe/Al in motor car bodies. However, this metal may be attacked by the OH--ions, generated by the cathodic electrolysis of water according to: H2O + e- → ½ H2 + OH-. The Al2O3 · xH2O protecting layer may dissolve slowly as aluminate and Al-metal then reacts rapidly with water to generate the threefold volume of hydrogen under the reestablishment of the oxide layer. Thus, the overall reaction for this cathodic corrosion of Al is given by: Al + 2H2O + e- → AlO2- + 2H2.It can be foreseen, that the changes at the phase boundary Al, AlOOH/paint and the accumulation of hydrolysed aluminate in the coating may influence, among other, the corrosion protection behavior of the paint layers. A systematic study of the influence of four different industrial epoxy resins from BASF Lacks & Farben AG (1)-(4) with their individual pigment systems, the one for paint (3) to be free of lead silicate, was undertaken. Seven different aluminium (alloy) substrates were employed. Their pretreatment modes were mostly due to zincphosphatation. Three standard corrosion tests for conventional corrosion, (CC) and one for filiform corrosion (FFC) were employed and evaluated, as usual. The accelerated open air corrosion test lasted 360 days.It was found, that for CC the corrosion protection capability was predominantly influenced by the resin, and it decreased in the following order: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ (4) 〉 (2) 〉 (1),\,(3). $$\end{document}The effect of the substrate was not very pronounced, but a relative optimum could be seen with Al Mg 0.4 Si 1.2-chromate pretreatment and Bonazinc 2000® and with Al Mg 1.5 Si 0.5 Cu 4.0-chromate pretreatment (with one exception). In conclusion, this systematic study reveals, on the basis of practical systems and corrosion test methods, a way for the optimization of CDP on aluminium.

Diese Konstitution wird gesichert durch eine Synthese der DL-Verbindung, die von Äpfelsäure (4 kg) ausgeht und 17 Reaktionsschritte erforderlich gemacht hat. Das synthet. Racemat stimmt mit dem Chromogen III, das wir aus einem künstlichen Gemisch von 50% D- und 50% L-Acetylglucosamin erhalten haben, genau überein. Aus dem Chromogen III wurde durch katalytische Hydrierung, Abspaltung der Acetylgruppe und Umsetzung mit Methyljodid ein quartäres Ammoniumsalz erhalten, das sich vom Muscarin durch Austausch der end-ständigen CH3-Gruppe gegen CH2OH unterscheidet; die sterischen Verhältnisse an 2 C-Atomen sind noch unbekannt.

Hierdurch ergibt sich ein bindender Ni—Ni-Abstand von 2.441(1) Å. Im Kristallgitter bilden die Ebenen durch die P2Ni-Untereinheiten einen Interplanarwinkel von 63.3°. Theoretische Betrachtungen sagen für das freie Molekül eine quadratisch planare Anordnung voraus, doch ergibt sich für die Drehbewegung zur beobachteten Geometrie nur eine flache Potentialenergiefläche. Die gefundene Verdrillung resultiert aus starken intramolekularen Abstoßungskräften zwischen den Cyclohexylgruppen der zwei P2Ni-Einheiten.
    Notes: The crystal structure of the title compound, [(C6H11)2PCH2CH2CH2P(C6H11)2NiH]2 (1), has been determined from 4051 reflections and refined to a final R-value of 0.044. The positions of the hydrogen atoms (bridging and non-bridging) have been determined from a difference Fourier synthesis. The molecular structure of the diamagnetic compound consists of subunits doubly-bridged by hydrogen atoms. The Ni—Ni and average Ni—H distances are 2.441 and 1.6 Å, respectively. In the solid state the two planes of the P2Ni units form a dihedral angle of 63.3°. Theoretical considerations predict a square-planar structure for the idealized molecule with a soft potential energy surface for a twisting motion towards the observed geometry. The observed twist is the result of severe intramolecular repulsions between the cyclohexyl groups of the two P2Ni units.

    Description: Seamounts are abundant features on the seafloor that serve as hotspots and barriers for the dispersal of benthic organisms. The primary focus of seamount ecology has typically been on the composition and distribution of faunal communities, with far less attention given to microbial communities. Here, we investigated the microbial communities in the water column (0-3400 m depth) and sediments (619-3883 m depth, 0-16 cm below seafloor) along the ice-covered Arctic ridge system called the Langseth Ridge. We contextualized the microbial community composition with data on the benthic trophic state (i.e., organic matter, chlorophyll- a content, and porewater geochemistry) and substrate type (i.e., sponge mats, sediments, basaltic pebbles). Our results showed slow current velocities throughout the water column, a shift in the pelagic microbial community from a dominance of Bacteroidia in the 0-10 m depth towards Proteobacteria and Nitrososphaeria below the epipelagic zone. In general, the pelagic microbial communities showed a high degree of similarity between the Langseth Ridge seamounts to a northern reference site. The only notable differences were decreases in richness between ~600 m and the bottom waters (~10 m above the seafloor) that suggest a pelagic-benthic coupling mediated by filter feeding of sponges living on the seamount summits. On the seafloor, the sponge spicule mats, and polychaete worms were the principal source of variation in sedimentary biogeochemistry and the benthic microbial community structure. The porewater signature suggested that low organic matter degradation rates are accompanied by a microbial community typical of deep-sea oligotrophic environments, such as Proteobacteria, Acidimicrobiia, Dehalococcoidia, Nitrospira, and archaeal Nitrososphaeria. The combined analysis of biogeochemical parameters and the microbial community suggests that the sponges play a significant role for pelagic-benthic coupling and acted as ecosystem engineers on the seafloor of ice-covered seamounts in the oligotrophic central Arctic Ocean.

    Description: Legal requirement in Europe asks for Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) in European seas, including consideration of trophic interactions and minimization of negative impacts of fishing on food webs and ecosystem functioning. This study presents the first mass-balanced ecosystem model focused on the western Baltic Sea (WBS). Results show that heavy fishing pressure exerted on the WBS has forced top predators such as harbour porpoise and cod to cover their dietary needs by shifting from forage fish to other prey or find food outside of the model area. The model was then developed to explore the dynamics of four future fishery scenarios: (1) business as usual (BAU), (2) maximum sustainable fishing (F = FMSY), (3) half of FMSY, and (4) EBFM with F = 0.5 FMSY for forage fish and F = 0.8 FMSY for other fish. Simulations show that BAU would perpetuate low catches from depleted stocks with a high risk of extinction for harbour porpoise. In contrast, the EBFM scenario would allow the recovery of harbour porpoise, forage fish and cod with increases in catch of herring and cod. EBFM promotes ecosystem resilience to eutrophication and ocean warming, and through the rebuilding of commercial stocks increases by more than three times carbon sequestration compared to BAU. The model provides an interrelated assessment of trophic guilds in the WBS, as required by European law to assess whether European seas are in good environmental status.

    Description: Removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere will be required over the next decades to achieve the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to well below 2°C aiming at not exceeding 1.5°C. Technological and ecosystem-based options are considered for generating negative emissions through carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and several nations have already included these in their Long-Term Low Greenhouse Gas Emission Development Strategies. However, strategies for development, implementation, and upscaling of CDR options often remain vague. Considering the scale at which CDR deployment is envisioned in emission pathways for limiting global warming to 1.5°C, significant environmental, social, and institutional implications are to be expected and need to be included in national feasibility assessments of CDR options. Following a multi-disciplinary and comprehensive approach, we created a framework that considers the environmental, technological, economic, social, institutional, and systemic implications of upscaling CDR options. We propose the framework as a tool to help guide decision-relevant feasibility assessments of CDR options, as well as identify challenges and opportunities within the national context. As such, the framework can serve as a means to inform and support decision makers and stakeholders in the iterative science-policy process of determining the role of CDR options in national strategies of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.

    Description: The DRIVE (Diurnal and RegIonal Variability of Halogen Emissions) campaign to the eastern tropical North Atlantic Ocean and the upwelling off Mauritania (NW Africa) was funded by the BMBF as part of the German SOLAS project SOPRAN II (Surface Ocean Processes in the Anthropocene; www.sopran.pangaea.de): The second leg of the 399th cruise of R/V Poseidon (P399/2) took place from 31 May to 17 June 2010 (Las Palmas-Mindelo (Cape Verde Islands) – Mauritanian upwelling – Las Palmas). It was followed by the transit leg 3 (P399/3) which took place from 18 June to 24 June 2010 (Las Palmas – Vigo (Spain)) with only one stop at ESTOC. Ten scientists from IFM-GEOMAR (Kiel), IfAM (U Kiel), IfBM (U Hamburg) and IUP (U Heidelberg) representing various SOPRAN II subprojects took part in the cruise which was the sixth of a series of German SOLAS cruises to the tropical North Atlantic Ocean. The major objective of P399/2 was to investigate the regional and diurnal atmospheric and oceanic variations of halogenated compounds in the eastern tropical North Atlantic Ocean with a special focus on the Mauritanian upwelling. The main working packages of P399/2 and P399/3 included measurements of - Atmospheric BrO and IO - Atmospheric halocarbons - Other atmospheric trace gases such as ozone, methane etc. - Aerosol composition - Vertical structure of the atmosphere - Dissolved halocarbons, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide - CTD, dissolved nutrients, O2, and chlorophyll - Microstructure of the upper water column Besides an extensive underway measurement program of dissolved (halocarbons, N2O, CO2) and atmospheric (BrO, halocarbons, other trace gases, aerosol) compounds, six 24h stations were performed and 23 regular CTD stations with depth profiles covering the entire water column were occupied.

    Description: The evolution from the Western Mediterranean Sea is inherently governed by (i) plate convergence between Nubia (Africa) / Eurasia and (ii) subduction related slab-roll back. Both processes are responsible for the surface features / topography of the Gulf of Cadiz / Gibraltar Arc / Alboran Sea / Rif / Betic domain and deep-seated features related to the consumption of African lithosphere. The project is part of the ESF-EUROCORES programme TOPO-EUROPE and is aiming to study the interrelation between convergence and major tectonic fault zones in the Gulf of Cadiz and the Alboran Sea (Trans-Alboran- Shear-Zone – Alboran Ridge) and Miocene subduction / deep-seated seismicity at 40-150 km depth. Monitoring networks with ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) and hydrophones (OBH) were installed first in the Alboran Sea (August 2009 to January 2010) and later in the Gulf of Cadiz (January 2010 to July 2010), providing for the first time local earthquake data collected on ocean bottom stations. First results suggest that the collected data are of every good quality to assess seismotectonics in both domains and yielding travel time data for unique tomographic images of the Gibraltar arc area and Alboran domain, providing seismic constraints on the structure of crust and mantle.

    Description: The cooperative research project between Chinese and German leading marine research institutions, the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey (GMGS) and Leibniz-Institut für Meereswissenschaften Kiel (IFM-GEOMAR) addressed the geological methane budget and environmental effects of methane emissions from gas hydrates along the passive margin of the northern South China Sea. Two areas were surveyed of which the NE area (A) was sampled in great detail, whereas area B, after an initial survey, yielded less promising results. Swath map bathymetry, ocean floor observation by continuous video survey (OFOS) and water column methane distribution pattern provided the basis for locating several sites of ongoing methane venting. Outstanding among these was a methane-derived carbonate structure in water depths of 600-900m. Vast accumulations of vent carbonate debris, pavements and edifices standing above the seafloor characterize this structure. A 30-m high edifice, named Jiu Long Methane Reef, proved to be an active cold vent site with chemosynthetic fauna and bacterial mats. At deep sites ( apprx. 3000m) in and adjacent to the Formosa Canyon methane anomalies in the bottom water and clam colonies also indicate active methane venting. Pore water and gas chemistry on gravity cores indicated rather shallow depths of the sulfate-methane-interface (SMI) and documented chloride anomalies. High methane concentrations (exceeding 10.000 μM) in sediments, which when extrapolated, suggest that saturation might be reached at about 16-24 mbsf at which depths the shallowest gas hydrates might be encountered in the area. The project results contribute directly to several major science policy missions. (1) Documentation of vast amounts of methane emmited from the passive margin of the northern South China Sea is seen as evidence for long-term climate forcing by the greenhouse gas methane. (2) The functioning and significance of deep-sea biota as modulating the greenhouse gas budget is convincingly demonstrated by the vast amounts of methane carbon fixed as authigenic carbonates. (3) Further development of TV-guided deep-sea instrumentation, and above all the retrieval of undecompressed sediments, have again been deomonstrated as high a priority topic for the future of marine science. (4) The success of the project has demonstrated how international partnerships can efficiently been implemented.

    Description: RV Sonne cruise 206 started on the 31st of May in Caldera (Costa Rica) and ended there on the 18th of June 2010. An international group of 23 scientists and 2 guests from Costa Rica set out to perform geophysical, biogeochemical, and sedimentological investigations at and around a number of submarine cold seeps that are ubiquitous along this convergent continental margin. The cruise was predominantly conducted as a pre-site survey for IODP (proposal 633Full-2; Costa Rica Mounds) in order to fill existing gaps in the seismic record at two of the proposed drill locations. A 2D seismic survey was conducted running over the large-scale seamount subduction slide “Jaco Scarp” yielding a highly improved image of the structural pattern within the upper 1000 m of the sedimentary sequence. In addition, high-resolution 3D seismic data, roughly covering the uppermost 300 m, could be obtained in the Mound 11/12 area, which will allow for a detailed analysis of the internal structure of these mud volcano-like features and help to understand the complex relation to the upward directed material flow. Moreover, a total number of 36 sediment cores (TV-guided multicorer, gravity corer) were successfully retrieved from active cold seeps and submarine slides and a large number of sub-samples were taken for subsequent geochemical and microbiological analyses. Overall, all major tasks of this cruise could successfully be fulfilled and the results will help to further our understanding of mechanisms controlling fluid flow in the deep subsurface of active continental margins.

    Description: The research project SO208 PLUMEFLUX (Propagation of Galápagos Plume Material in the Equatorial East Pacific) is funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and focusses on seamounts on the Cocos Plate, formed at the East Pacific Rise but presently located off the coast of NW Costa Rica and Nicaragua (Leg 1), and on the Cocos-Nazca-Spreading Center(CNS; Leg 2). The studies conducted on cruise SO208 included multi-beam mapping, sediment echo sounding, hard rock sampling, as well as sedimentological and biological sampling. The major geological targets of Leg 1 were (1) to evaluate if the seamounts off northern Costa Rica and Nicaragua were formed by the Galápagos hotspot and thus to constrain the extent of influence by the Galápagos plume on the upper asthenosphere and lithosphere and (2) to constrain better the material input into the Central American subduction zone. Leg 2 aimed to sample profiles of the seafloor perpendicular to the CNS using the mobile drill Rockdrill 2 of the British Geological Survey, in order to reconstruct plume-ridge interaction in the past to complement morphological, petrological and geochemical studies carried out on previous cruises along the ridge axis (e.g. SO158). The integration of the results with existing data should contribute towards a better understanding of transport processes of plume material in the upper mantle and of the geodynamic evolution of the central East Pacific. The sedimentological studies carried out on both Legs of SO208 focussed on radiolarian assemblages. SO208 startet in Caldera/Costa Rica on July 15th, 2010, and ended in Guayaquil/Ecuador on August 29th, 2010. During Leg 1 nineteen seamounts on the Cocos Plate have been mapped and sampled. Within only 12 days at sea, a total of 41 stations(28 dredges, 2 TV grabs, and 11 multicorers) were carried out. Of these deployments, 23 recovered magmatic rocks, 15 volcaniclastics, and 13 Mn-Fe oxides. The samples comprise mainly pillow and sheet lavas, often with fresh glassy margins, and a wide spectrum of volcaniclastic rocks. Notably, we found several indications for explosive volcanic activity at water depths 〉 3,000 m. Due to a series of unfortunate circumstances beyond our control, the planned Rockdrill 2 deployment on Leg 2 had to be cancelled. Instead we mapped and collected samples via dredging from 60 localities along five profiles perpendicular to CNS. A total of 83 stations (76 dredges, 3 TVgrabs, and 4 multicorers) were carried out. Of these deployments, 59 recovered magmatic rocks, 3 volcaniclastics, 51 volcanic glass, and 6 Mn-Fe oxides, making this a successful cruise despite the Rockdrill problem. The first and most detailed profile (with 23 sampled localities) extended from the ridge axis to the north at ~92°W. The morphology shows alternating regions of abyssal ridges and valleys (possibly reflecting less plume input into the ridge) and thicker elevated bands commonly containing seamounts, some of which are tectonically deformed (possibly reflecting axial ridge type morphology and thus greater plume input into the ridge). The second profile was carried out at the shallowest part of the ridge axis, closest to the hotspot, just to the east of the 91° Transform Fault. The third profile extended 30 km north of the ridge (at ~89°30´W), where a formerly on-axis seamount has been split in half. We want to evaluate how far in the past the unique enriched geochemical anomaly associated with the seamount persisted in the past. Thirteen sites were successfully sampled along a fourth profile at 89°10’W, extending 35 km north and 35 km south of the CNS into crust up to 500,000 yrs old. This site was selected, because a major depleted geochemical anomaly exists at that location. A final short profile was carried out to the north and south and east (on the ridge axis) of a lava plateau at 88°20’W that represents an enriched anomaly along the ridge axis. The morphology of the area studied on Leg 2 strongly suggests that the intensity of interaction of the plume with the ridge has varied considerably over the last several hundred thousand years along the entire part of the ridge that we studied. Geochemical data should allow us to constrain better variations in plume-ridge interaction through time. Biological material was obtained successfully as macrofauna and as sediment samples containing meiofaunal organisms with the help of a geological chain bag dredge, sediment traps, a multicorer and a TV-grab. Macrofaunal organisms were recovered at 93 out of 124 stations, 37 stations revealed sediment samples. During the cruise, a total of 8,598 meiofaunal organisms were centrifuged out of about 45 kg of sediment and sorted to animal group. Foraminifera and Nematoda dominated the meiofauna, followed by Copepoda and at a lower abundance by Tardigrada, Kinorhyncha and Loricifera. We also discovered a highly diverse benthic macrofauna, mainly represented by Porifera, Bryozoa, Annelida, Brachiopoda and even a few monoplacophoran molluscs.

    Description: Cruise SO210 with RV SONNE to the active continental margin off Chile was conducted by shiptime exchange with RV METEOR. Funds for mobilizing the research team were provided by the German Science Foundation (DFG) in conjunction with the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 574 of the University of Kiel. In the first years, the SFB 574 investigated the pathways and fluxes of volatiles through the erosive subduction zone off Central America. For comparison, the studies were extended to the accretionary margin off Central Chile. Cruise SO210 is the last cruise conducted in the framework of SFB 574 and based on investigations of previous SFB-cruises on the RVs VIDAL GORMAZ and JAMES COOK. The first leg of cruise SO210 was dedicated to long gravity coring for volcanic ash layers from the erruptive Southern Volcanic Zone (SVZ) of the Andes that were either deposited as fallouts onto the incoming Nazca Plate or transported down the slope and across the Chile Trench. Eight gravity cores of 12 m length were retrieved seaward of the Chile Channel on the outer rise of the Nazca Plate. The second goal for coring was the description and dating of previously mapped submarine landslides as well as retrieval of slide-related material for geo-technical experiments. As the deployment frame for long coring had to be removed on the second leg we continued coring for mass-wasting and geochemistry with short cores. Ten gravity cores of 3 or 6 m barrel length were retrieved upslope of slides, the glide plane and redeposited material downslope of the slide evacuation area. This sampling activity was supported by detailed acoustic surveys with Parasound and multibeam to remap critical areas for mass wasting in search for events, e.g. triggered by the recent Mw 8.8 Maule Earthquake, such as flanks of submarine canyons or previously detected submarine slides and to fill data gaps in the existing bathymetric data. The major activity of the entire cruise was dedicated to the search and detailed sampling of manifestations of fluid discharge activity on the Chilean forearc. A total of 11 deployments with the video sled OFOS and 12 dives by the ROV KIEL 6000 were conducted for ground-truthing of information which indicated possible seep activity and has been obtained during previous cruises to the Chilean forearc. In five working areas we found manifestations of fluid discharge. In these areas the survey was followed by an intense sampling of bottom water, sediments, carbonates, mega and meiofauna and the deployment of instrumentation on the seafloor. The goal of these deployments was to measure in situ seabed methane emission rates and associated fluxes of sulfide and major electron acceptors such as oxygen at seep sites along the Chilean margin and to understand its controls. This was accompanied by CTD casts to trace oxygen and the fate of methane discharge in the water column. Sediment cores obtained by multicorer or ROV were used for the geochemical characterization of the pore water and microbiological studies which include turnover rate measurements, molecular studies, flow through experiments and sampling of active sediments. Authigenic carbonates obtained by TV-Grab or ROV were sampled for fauna, biomarker studies and investigations to reconstruct the growth structures, calcification processes and fluid-pathway systematic. The sampling of sediments and carbonates recovered a unique fauna with 79 different taxa, several of them appear to be species new to science.

    Description: Cruise SO-214 of R/V SONNE headed by IFM-GEOMAR served two legs of project NEMESYS, funded through the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Major partners of the project are Leibniz Institute of Marine Science (IFM-GEOMAR) and the Federal Institute of Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) Germany, as well as the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) and the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). NEMESYS aims to extend understanding and modelling of cold vents along the Hikurangi Margin (HM) off the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Since the first findings in the late 80´s several cruises have been dedicated to map and investigate the active seepage of Methane in this area. Results of these cruises headed by New Zealand and international scientists provided the database for the first joint German – New Zealand expedition SO-191 in 2007. During this cruise with R/V SONNE the HM was investigated within three legs comprising all marine geo-scientific disciplines. The major findings in geophysical, geological, geo-chemical, and biological research were published in a special issue by Marine Geology (Vol. 272, 2010). Nevertheless a lot of questions remained or were raised by the upcoming results. Still lateral continuation of feeder channels and a possible relation between internal structure, activity and tectonic regime of a seep site were not understood. The geological, geo-chemical and biological analysis has been related to the overall description and study of the seep sites along the margin. Detailed studies across a seep site and high-resolution sampling to study the internal variation of Methane production and the influences to chemistry and habitat have not been complete with the required intensity. These exemplary listed investigations together with an additional list of questions to seepage led to the follow-up project SO-214 NEMESYS, which was funded through the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Aim of the project NEMESYS is to confirm derived models of seep structures and to extend the existing database and knowledge by high-resolution sampling in all disciplines. Based on the findings of the SO-191 New Vents project Opouawe Bank and Omakere Ridge were identified as the areas with the highest interest for our additional studies. Opouawe Bank provides a high density of active seep sites with various expressions of feeder channels in seismic images. Omakere did provide the only seep sites that were found without feeder channels underneath. In between the Porangahau Ridge was selected as third target due to the indications of either gas or hydrate formation without active gas expulsion. Cruise SO-214 with R/V SONNE was split into two legs. The seismic part started on 09th March 2011 in the port of Wellington. Two 3D seismic cubes were acquired above active seep sites at Omakere and Opouawe Bank. A third cube at Porangahau Ridge could not be completed due to technical problems with the equipment and rough weather conditions. Intensive Parasound Profiling and extended 2D seismic with high resolution (up to 1.2 m migration grid) were undertaken. Many more feeder channels were identified than previously known from the SO-191 data, although not all of them terminate in a seafloor expression. The second leg left the port of Wellington on 6th April 2011 dedicated to intensive geological, geo-chemical and biological investigations. The major work was completed at Opouawe Bank. Based on images of the seismic data compilation North and South Tower seeps and seep site Takahe were chosen for the intensive sampling program. CTD and gravity cores were taken in dense spacing to investigate the local interaction of seepage and surrounding seafloor and water column. The water column showed limited stratification but seemed to be influenced from stormy weather. Biologic investigations showed limited variations compared with the SO-191 expedition, mainly in the distribution of fauna. The variety of amphipods seems to be a unique feature of the NZ seeps. The second leg suffered from bad weather conditions, which anticipated work during 100 hrs. out of scheduled 330 hrs.     Description: The microbial community response to petroleum seepage was investigated in a whole round sediment core (16 cm length) collected nearby natural hydrocarbon seepage structures in the Caspian Sea, using a newly developed Sediment-Oil-Flow-Through (SOFT) system. Distinct redox zones established and migrated vertically in the core during the 190 days-long simulated petroleum seepage. Methanogenic petroleum degradation was indicated by an increase in methane concentration from 8 μM in an untreated core compared to 2300 μM in the lower sulfate-free zone of the SOFT core at the end of the experiment, accompanied by a respective decrease in the δ13C signal of methane from -33.7 to -49.5‰. The involvement of methanogens in petroleum degradation was further confirmed by methane production in enrichment cultures from SOFT sediment after the addition of hexadecane, methylnapthalene, toluene, and ethylbenzene. Petroleum degradation coupled to sulfate reduction was indicated by the increase of integrated sulfate reduction rates from 2.8 SO42-m-2 day-1 in untreated cores to 5.7 mmol SO42-m-2 day-1 in the SOFT core at the end of the experiment, accompanied by a respective accumulation of sulfide from 30 to 447 μM. Volatile hydrocarbons (C2–C6 n-alkanes) passed through the methanogenic zone mostly unchanged and were depleted within the sulfate-reducing zone. The amount of heavier n-alkanes (C10–C38) decreased step-wise toward the top of the sediment core and a preferential degradation of shorter (〈C14) and longer chain n-alkanes (〉C30) was seen during the seepage. This study illustrates, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time the development of methanogenic petroleum degradation and the succession of benthic microbial processes during petroleum passage in a whole round sediment core.

    Description: At the end of 2014, a Major Baltic Inflow (MBI) brought oxygenated, salty water into the Baltic proper and reached the long-term anoxic Eastern Gotland Basin (EGB) by March 2015. In July 2015, we measured benthic fluxes of phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N) and silicon (Si) nutrients and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in situ using an autonomous benthic lander at deep sites (170-210 m) in the EGB, where the bottom water oxygen concentration was 30-45 μM. The same in situ methodology was used to measure benthic fluxes at the same sites in 2008-2010, but then under anoxic conditions. The high efflux of phosphate under anoxic conditions became lower upon oxygenation, and turned into an influx in about 50% of the flux measurements. The C:P and N:P ratios of the benthic solute flux changed from clearly below the Redfield ratio (on average about 70 and 3-4, respectively) under anoxia to approaching or being well above the Redfield ratio upon oxygenation. These observations demonstrate retention of P in newly oxygenated sediments. We found no significant effect of oxygenation on the benthic ammonium, silicate and DIC flux. We also measured benthic denitrification, anammox, and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) rates at the same sites using isotope-pairing techniques. The bottom water of the long-term anoxic EGB contained less than 0.5 μM nitrate in 2008-2010, but the oxygenation event created bottom water nitrate concentrations of about 10 μM in July 2015 and the benthic flux of nitrate was consistently directed into the sediment. Nitrate reduction to both dinitrogen gas (denitrification) and ammonium (DNRA) was initiated in the newly oxygenated sediments, while anammox activity was negligible. We estimated the influence of this oxygenation event on the magnitudes of the integrated benthic P flux (the internal P load) and the fixed N removal through benthic and pelagic denitrification by comparing with a hypothetical scenario without the MBI. Our calculations suggest that the oxygenation triggered by the MBI in July 2015, extrapolated to the basin-wide scale of the Baltic proper, decreased the internal P load by 23% and increased the total (benthic plus pelagic) denitrification by 18%.

    Description: Ecological processes and intra-specific genetic diversity reciprocally affect each other. While the importance of uniting ecological variables and genetic variation to understand species’ plasticity, adaptation, and evolution is increasingly recognized, only few studies have attempted to address the intersection of population ecology and genetics using marine macrophyte as models. Representative empirical case studies on genetic diversity are reviewed that explore ecological and evolutionary processes in marine macrophytes. These include studies on environment-induced phenotypic plasticity and associated ecological adaptation; population genetic variation and structuring driven by ecological variation; and ecological consequences mediated by intraspecific and interspecific diversity. Knowledge gaps are also discussed that impede the connection of ecology and genetics in macrophytes and possible approaches to address these issues. Finally, an eco-evolutionary perspective is advocated, by incorporating structural-to-functional genomics and life cycle complexity, to increase the understanding of the adaptation and evolution of macrophytes in response to environmental heterogeneity.

    Description: Corals exert a strong biological control over their calcification processes, but there is a lack of knowledge on their capability of long-term acclimatization to ocean acidification (OA). We used a dual geochemical proxy approach to estimate the calcifying fluid pH (pHcf) and carbonate chemistry of a Mediterranean coral (Balanophyllia europaea) naturally growing along a pH gradient (range: pHTS 8.07–7.74). The pHcf derived from skeletal boron isotopic composition (δ11B) was 0.3–0.6 units above seawater values and homogeneous along the gradient (mean ± SEM: Site 1 = 8.39 ± 0.03, Site 2 = 8.34 ± 0.03, Site 3 = 8.34 ± 0.02). Also carbonate ion concentration derived from B/Ca was homogeneous [mean ± SEM (μmol kg–1): Site 1 = 579 ± 34, Site 2 = 541 ± 27, Site 3 = 568 ± 30] regardless of seawater pH. Furthermore, gross calcification rate (GCR, mass of CaCO3 deposited on the skeletal unit area per unit of time), estimated by a “bio-inorganic model” (IpHRAC), was homogeneous with decreasing pH. The homogeneous GCR, internal pH and carbonate chemistry confirm that the features of the “building blocks” – the fundamental structural components – produced by the biomineralization process were substantially unaffected by increased acidification. Furthermore, the pH up-regulation observed in this study could potentially explain the previous hypothesis that less “building blocks” are produced with increasing acidification ultimately leading to increased skeletal porosity and to reduced net calcification rate computed by including the total volume of the pore space. In fact, assuming that the available energy at the three sites is the same, this energy at the low pH sites could be partitioned among fewer calicoblastic cells that consume more energy given the larger difference between external and internal pH compared to the control, leading to the production of less building blocks (i.e., formation of pores inside the skeleton structure, determining increased porosity). However, we cannot exclude that also dissolution may play a role in increasing porosity. Thus, the ability of scleractinian corals to maintain elevated pHcf relative to ambient seawater might not always be sufficient to counteract declines in net calcification under OA scenarios.

    Description: Redox-sensitive mobilization of nutrients from sediments strongly affects the eutrophic state of the central Baltic Sea; a region associated with the spread of hypoxia and almost permanently anoxic and sulfidic conditions in the deeper basins. Ventilation of these basins depends on renewal by inflow of water enriched in oxygen (O2) from the North Sea, occurring roughly once per decade. Benthic fluxes and water column distributions of dissolved inorganic nitrogen species, phosphate (PO43-), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), sulfide (HS-), and total oxygen uptake (TOU) were measured along a depth gradient in the Eastern Gotland Basin (EGB). Campaigns were conducted during euxinic conditions of the deep basin in Aug./Sept. 2013 and after two inflow events in July/Aug. 2015 and March 2016 when O2 concentrations in deep waters reached 60 μM. The intrusion of O2-rich North Sea water into the EGB led to an approximate 33 and 10% reduction of the seabed PO43- and ammonium (NH4+) release from deep basin sediments. Post-inflow, the deep basin sediment was rapidly colonized by HS- oxidizing bacteria tentatively assigned to the family Beggiatoaceae, and HS- release was completely suppressed. The presence of a hypoxic transition zone (HTZ) between 80 and 120 m water depth was confirmed not only for euxinic deep-water conditions during 2013 but also for post-inflow conditions. Because deep-water renewal did not ventilate the HTZ, where PO43- and NH4+ fluxes were highest, high seabed nutrient release there was relatively unchanged. Extrapolation of the in situ nutrient fluxes indicated that, overall, the reduction in PO43- and NH4+ release in response to deep-water renewal can be considered as minor, reducing the internal nutrient load by 2 and 12% only, respectively. Infrequent inflow events thus have a limited capacity to sustainably reduce internal nutrient loading in the EGB and mitigate eutrophication.

    Description: Water masses influenced by oxygen minimum zones (OMZ) feature low inorganic nitrogen (N) to phosphorus (P) ratios. The surplus of P over N is thought to favor non-Redfield primary production by bloom-forming phytoplankton species. Additionally, excess phosphate (P*) is thought to provide a niche for nitrogen fixing organisms. In order to assess the effect of low inorganic nutrient ratios on the stoichiometry and composition of primary producers, biogeochemical measurements were carried out in 2012 during a research cruise in the eastern tropical South Pacific (ETSP). Based on pigment analyses, a succession of different phytoplankton functional groups was observed along onshore—offshore transects with diatoms dominating the productive upwelling region, and prymnesiophytes, cryptophytes, and Synechococcus prevailing in the oligotrophic open ocean. Although inorganic nutrient supply ratios were below Redfield proportions throughout the sampling area, the stoichiometry of particulate organic nitrogen to phosphorus (PON:POP) generally exceeded ratios of 16:1. Despite PON:POP ≥ 16, high P*-values in the surface layer (0–50 m) above the shelf rapidly decreased as water masses were advected offshore. There are three mechanisms which can explain these observations: (1) non-Redfield primary production, where the excess phosphorus in the biomass is directly released as dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP), (2) non-Redfield primary production, which is masked by a particulate organic matter pool mainly consisting of P-depleted detrital biomass, and/or (3) Redfield primary production combined with dinitrogen (N2) fixation. Our observations suggest that the three processes occur simultaneously in the study area; quantifying the relative importance of each of these mechanisms needs further investigation. Therefore, it remains uncertain whether the ETSP is a net sink for bioavailable N or whether the N-deficit in this area is replenished locally.

    Description: Anaerobic microbial hydrocarbon degradation is a major biogeochemical process at marine seeps. Here we studied the response of the microbial community to petroleum seepage simulated for 190 days in a sediment core from the Caspian Sea using a sediment-oil-flow-through (SOFT) system. Untreated (without simulated petroleum seepage) and SOFT sediment microbial communities shared 43% bacterial genuslevel 16S rRNA-based operational taxonomic units (OTU0:945) but shared only 23% archaeal OTU0:945. The community differed significantly between sediment layers. The detection of fourfold higher deltaproteobacterial cell numbers in SOFT than in untreated sediment at depths characterized by highest sulfate reduction rates and strongest decrease of gaseous and mid-chain alkane concentrations indicated a specific response of hydrocarbon-degrading Deltaproteobacteria. Based on an increase in specific CARD-FISH cell numbers, we suggest the following groups of sulfate-reducing bacteria to be likely responsible for the observed decrease in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon concentration in SOFT sediments: clade SCA1 for propane and butane degradation, clade LCA2 for mid- to long-chain alkane degradation, clade Cyhx for cycloalkanes, pentane and hexane degradation, and relatives of Desulfobacula for toluene degradation. Highest numbers of archaea of the genus Methanosarcina were found in the methanogenic zone of the SOFT core where we detected preferential degradation of long-chain hydrocarbons. Sequencing of masD, a marker gene for alkane degradation encoding (1-methylalkyl)succinate synthase, revealed a low diversity in SOFT sediment with two abundant species-level MasD OTU0:96.

    Description: Ultraslow spreading ridges account for one-third of the global mid-ocean ridges. Their impact on the diversity and connectivity of benthic deep-sea microbial assemblages is poorly understood, especially for hydrothermally inactive, magma-starved ridges. We investigated bacterial and archaeal diversity in sediments collected from an amagmatic segment (10∘–17∘E) of the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) and in the adjacent northern and southern abyssal zones of similar water depths within one biogeochemical province of the Indian Ocean. Microbial diversity was determined by 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing. Our results show significant differences in microbial communities between stations outside and inside the SWIR, which were mostly explained by environmental selection. Community similarity correlated significantly with differences in chlorophyll a content and with the presence of upward porewater fluxes carrying reduced compounds (e.g., ammonia and sulfide), suggesting that trophic resource availability is a main driver for changes in microbial community composition. At the stations in the SWIR axial valley (3,655–4,448 m water depth), microbial communities were enriched in bacterial and archaeal taxa common in organic matter-rich subsurface sediments (e.g., SEEP-SRB1, Dehalococcoida, Atribacteria, and Woesearchaeota) and chemosynthetic environments (mainly Helicobacteraceae). The abyssal stations outside the SWIR communities (3,760–4,869 m water depth) were dominated by OM1 clade, JTB255, Planctomycetaceae, and Rhodospirillaceae. We conclude that ultraslow spreading ridges create a unique environmental setting in sedimented segments without distinct hydrothermal activity, and play an important role in shaping microbial communities and promoting diversity, but also in connectivity among deep-sea habitats.

    Description: The sediment-water interface is an important site for material exchange in marine systems and harbor unique microbial habitats. The flux of nutrients, metals, and greenhouse gases at this interface may be severely dampened by the activity of microorganisms and abiotic redox processes, leading to the “benthic filter” concept. In this study, we investigate the spatial variability, mechanisms and quantitative importance of a microbially-dominated benthic filter for dissolved sulfide in the Eastern Gotland Basin (Baltic Sea) that is located along a dynamic redox gradient between 65 and 173 m water depth. In August-September 2013, high resolution (0.25 mm minimum) vertical microprofiles of redox-sensitive species were measured in surface sediments with solid-state gold-amalgam voltammetric microelectrodes. The highest sulfide consumption (2.73–3.38 mmol m−2 day−1) occurred within the top 5 mm in sediments beneath a pelagic hypoxic transition zone (HTZ, 80–120 m water depth) covered by conspicuous white bacterial mats of genus Beggiatoa. A distinct voltammetric signal for polysulfides, a transient sulfur oxidation intermediate, was consistently observed within the mats. In sediments under anoxic waters (〉140 m depth), signals for Fe(II) and aqueous FeS appeared below a subsurface maximum in dissolved sulfide, indicating a Fe(II) flux originating from older sediments presumably deposited during the freshwater Ancylus Lake that preceded the modern Baltic Sea. Our results point to a dynamic benthic sulfur cycling in Gotland Basin where benthic sulfide accumulation is moderated by microbial sulfide oxidation at the sediment surface and FeS precipitation in deeper sediment layers. Upscaling our fluxes to the Baltic Proper; we find that up to 70% of the sulfide flux (2281 kton yr−1) toward the sediment-seawater interface in the entire basin can be consumed at the microbial mats under the HTZ (80–120 m water depth) while only about 30% the sulfide flux effuses to the bottom waters (〉120 m depth). This newly described benthic filter for the Gotland Basin must play a major role in limiting the accumulation of sulfide in and around the deep basins of the Baltic Sea.

    Description: Digestive system functionality of fish larvae relies on the onset of genetically pre-programmed and extrinsically influenced digestive functions. This study explored how algal supplementation (green-water) until 14 days post hatch (dph) and the ingestion of food [enriched rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis) paste] from 15 dph onward affects molecular maturation and functionality of European eel larval ingestion and digestion mechanisms. For this, we linked larval biometrics to expression of genes relating to appetite [ghrelin (ghrl), cholecystokinin (cck)], food intake [proopiomelanocortin (pomc)], digestion [trypsin (try), triglyceride lipase (tgl), amylase (amyl)], energy metabolism [ATP synthase F0 subunit 6 (atp6), cytochrome-c-oxidase 1 (cox1)], growth [insulin-like growth factor (igf1)] and thyroid metabolism [thyroid hormone receptors (thrαA, thrβB)]. Additionally, we estimated larval nutritional status via nucleic acid analysis during transition from endogenous and throughout the exogenous feeding stage. Results showed increased expression of ghrl and cck on 12 dph, marking the beginning of the first-feeding window, but no benefit of larviculture in green-water was observed. Moreover, expression of genes relating to protein (try) and lipid (tgl) hydrolysis revealed essential digestive processes occurring from 14 to 20 dph. On 16 dph, a molecular response to initiation of exogenous feeding was observed in the expression patterns of pomc, atp6, cox1, igf1, thrαA and thrβB. Additionally, we detected increased DNA contents, which coincided with increased RNA contents and greater body area, reflecting growth in feeding compared to non-feeding larvae. Thus, the here applied nutritional regime facilitated a short-term benefit, where feeding larvae were able to sustain growth and better condition than their non-feeding conspecifics. However, RNA:DNA ratios decreased from 12 dph onward, indicating a generally low larval nutritional condition, probably leading to the point-of-no-return and subsequent irreversible mortality due to unsuccessful utilization of exogenous feeding. In conclusion, this study molecularly identified the first-feeding window in European eel and revealed that exogenous feeding success occurs concurrently with the onset of a broad array of enzymes and hormones, which are known to regulate molecular processes in feeding physiology. This knowledge constitutes essential information to develop efficient larval feeding strategies and will hopefully provide a promising step toward sustainable aquaculture of European eel.

    Description: The repeated transgression and regression of coastlines mediated by the late Quaternary glacial–interglacial cycles make the northwest Pacific a hot spot to study marine speciation and population diversity. The red alga Agarophyton vermiculophyllum is an ecologically important species native to the northwest Pacific, capturing considerable research interest due to its wide-range invasiveness in Europe and North America. However, the knowledge of phylogeographic structure and intraspecific genetic diversity across the entire native range was still scarce. Here, we used 1,214-bp of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) to explore phylogeographic patterns, lineage structure, and population genetic differentiation of 48 A. vermiculophyllum populations in the northwest Pacific. Our DNA data revealed overall high haplotype diversity and low nucleotide diversity and five phylogeographically structured genetic lineages that diverged significantly from each other. S-DIVA analysis showed the ancestors of A. vermiculophyllum originating from multiple areas encompassing the Japan–Pacific coast, East and South China Seas. This combined evidence indicates that A. vermiculophyllum might have survived in multiple scattered glacial refugia during the late Quaternary climate oscillations in the northwest Pacific. Such knowledge may help to better understand how palaeoclimate interacted with contemporary environments to contribute to intraspecific genetic variation and provide a new perspective for conserving natural resource of A. vermiculophyllum in the northwest Pacific.

    Description: As the technical and political challenges of land-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches become more apparent, the oceans may be the new “blue” frontier for carbon drawdown strategies in climate governance. Drawing on lessons learnt from the way terrestrial carbon dioxide removal emerged, we explore increasing overall attention to marine environments and mCDR projects, and how this could manifest in four entwined knowledge systems and governance sectors. We consider how developments within and between these “frontiers” could result in different futures—where hype and over-promising around marine carbon drawdown could enable continued time-buying for the carbon economy without providing significant removals, or where reforms to modeling practices, policy development, innovation funding, and legal governance could seek co-benefits between ocean protection, economy, and climate.

    Description: The Youngest Toba Tuff (YTT) supereruption from Toba Caldera in Sumatra at ca. 74,000 years BP is the largest volcanic event recorded in the Pleistocene. Intriguingly, recent radioisotopic dating of the near antipodal Los Chocoyos (LCY) supereruption from the Atitlán caldera in Guatemala finds an identical age within uncertainties to that of YTT. This opens the question of whether these synchronous supereruptions may be a coincidence or could be a consequence of each other? Using the known eruptive record from the past 2 Myr, we find that the likelihood of having two near antipodal supereruptions (〉1,000 km3 tephra volume) within centuries (〈400 years), as suggested by volcanic proxies and annual counting layer chronology in the ice core records, is very small (0.086%), requiring a non-random cause and effect. Considering this analysis, we speculate that one potential physical mechanism that could explain the temporal relationship between these supereruptions is that seismic energy released during YTT eruption focused on the antipodal region, where concentrated stresses ultimately promoted the eruption of the perched LCY magma system (or vice versa). This supereruption “double-whammy” may thus be the more compelling source of the significant environmental impacts often attributed individually to the YTT supereruption. Improving the existing age information of YTT and LCY, and a better understanding of caldera collapse events will enable further testing of the hypothesis that synchronous supereruptions do not result by pure chance.

    Description / Table of Contents: Organic Syntheses by Means of Transition Metal Complexes, 8 - Synthesis of Unsaturated δ-L-Lactones from Vinyloxiranes and Carbon Monoxide via Transition Metal ComplexesThe transition metal-assisted carbonylation of vinyloxiranes to unsaturated δ-lactones has been verified and studied mechanistically by use of organometallic model reactions. The light induced complexation of vinyloxiranes 1 by Fe(CO)5 was shown to be a multistep reaction in which diastereomeric cis-resp. trans- ferralactones 2 are formed. Complexes of both types (2k, 2k′) were characterized crystallographically and studied chemically concerning their reactions with nucleophiles and electrophiles. Reaction with primary amines gives ferralactames 7 by migration of the allyl group and inversion at C-1 as well as C-4 indicating an attack of amine at the exo-position of C-4. On the other hand the reaction with HO⊖ leads to the formation of CO23⊝ and diene complexes 10 with inversion at C-1 only, indicating that the reaction has been initiated by attack of HO⊖ at a terminal carbonyl group. On electrophilic attack ferralactones form allyl cations (14, 16) by opening of the CO - O bond. Carbonylation of ferralactones with CO in aprotic solvents give good yields of unsaturated δ-lactones (12). In the case of isoprene epoxide it has been shown that homogeneous catalytic cyclocarbonylation of vinyloxiranes can be of synthetic use.
    Notes: Anhand metallorganischer Modellreaktionen wurde die Cyclocarbonylierung von Vinyloxiranen zu ungesättigten δ-Lactonen untersucht. Die photochemisch initiierte Komplexierung von Vinyloxiranen 1 (X = O) an Fe(CO)5 verläuft mehrstufig und führt zu diastereomeren cis- bzw. trans-Ferralactonen 2. Vertreter beider Verbindungstypen (2k, 2 k′) wurden kristallographisch charakterisiert und chemisch bezüglich ihres Verhaltens gegenüber Nucleophilen und Elektrophilen studiert. Mit primären Aminen bilden sich Ferralactame 7 unter Wanderung des Allylsystems sowie unter Konfigurationsumkehr an C-1 und C-4, was den exo-Angriff des Amins an C-4 des Allylsystems beweist. Bei Einwirkung von HO⊝ hingegen zerfallen Ferralactone zu CO23⊝ und Dien-komplexen 10, wobei lediglich an C-1 eine Konfigurationsumkehr beobachtet wird. In diesem Fall greift HO⊝ somit an einer terminalen Carbonylgruppe an. Elektrophile bewirken die Spaltung der CO-O-Bindung unter Bildung von Allyl-Kationen (14, 16). Die Carbonylierung von Ferralactonen führt in aprotischen Lösungsmitteln in guten Ausbeuten zu ungesättigten S-Lactonen (12). Am Isoprenepoxid wurde gezeigt, daß auch die homogenkatalytische Cyclocarbonylierung von Vinyloxiranen gute Ausbeuten an δ-Lactonen ergibt und dieses Verfahren für Synthesen von Interesse ist.

The thermal stability of the ethyliron complexes 17-24 towards β-H elimination (to give the (η2-ethylene)iron hydrides 37-39 or the Cp(L)2FeH compounds 40-48) increases with the basicity of the phosphane ligand and decreases with increasing methyl-substitution of the Cp ligand. The vinyliron compounds 29-32, 54 and 55 react with ethylene with insertion into the vinyl-Fe bond to give the (η3-crotyl)iron complexes 56-61 as the result of isomerization. The (η1, η2-alkenyl)iron compounds Cp(Me3P)Fe-[CH2]3-CH=CH2(Cp=C5H5 (62), C5Me5 (63) and (C5Me5)(Me3P)Fe-o-C6H4CH2CH=CH2 (67) were isolated and are stable at 20°C.

    Description / Table of Contents: The diade distribution of copoly(l,3-dioxacyclanes) synthesized by cationic ring-opening polymerization at 293 K in toluene (initiator HClO4) was studied by 1H-NMR analysis. As a result sequence lengths of a typical statistic copolymer were found. Therefore, the calculation of sequence lengths from copolymerization parameters is not allowed. Copolymers Synthesized by step-polymerization have also statistic sequence lengths. These facts are attributed to by-reactions.

    Description: The dynamics of the particulate organic carbon (POC) pool in the ocean are central to the marine carbon cycle. POC is the link between surface primary production, the deep ocean, and sediments. The rate at which POC is degraded in the dark ocean can impact atmospheric CO2 concentration. Therefore, a central focus of marine organic geochemistry studies is to improve our understanding of POC distribution, composition, and cycling. The last few decades have seen improvements in analytical techniques that have greatly expanded what we can measure, both in terms of organic compound structural diversity and isotopic composition, and complementary molecular omics studies. Here we provide a brief overview of the autochthonous, allochthonous, and anthropogenic components comprising POC in the ocean. In addition, we highlight key needs for future research that will enable us to more effectively connect diverse data sources and link the identity and structural diversity of POC to its sources and transformation processes.

    Description: In this paper we describe the results of an experimental implementation of the recent guidelines issued by the Italian regulatory body for monitoring hydrocarbon production activities. In particular, we report about the pilot study on seismic, deformation, and pore pressure monitoring of the Mirandola hydrocarbon cultivation facility in Northern Italy. This site hosts the Cavone oil field that was speculated of possibly influencing the 2012 ML 5.8 Mirandola earthquake source. According to the guidelines, the monitoring center should analyse geophysical measurements related to seismicity, crustal deformation and pore pressure in quasi real-time (within 24–48 h). A traffic light system would then be used to regulate underground operations in case of detecting significant earthquakes (i.e., events with size and location included in critical ranges). For these 2-year period of guidelines experimentation, we analysed all different kinds of available data, and we tested the existence of possible relationship between their temporal trends. Despite the short time window and the scarce quantity of data collected, we performed the required analysis and extracted as much meaningful and statistically reliable information from the data. We discuss here the most important observations drawn from the monitoring results, and highlight the lessons learned by describing practical issues and limitations that we have encountered in carrying out the tasks as defined in the guidelines. Our main goal is to contribute to the discussion about how to better monitor the geophysical impact of this kind of anthropogenic activity. We point out the importance of a wider seismic network but, mostly, of borehole sensors to improve microseismic detection capabilities. Moreover, the lack of an assessment of background seismicity in an unperturbed situation -due to long life extraction activities- makes it difficult to get a proper picture of natural background seismic activity, which would be instead an essential reference information for a tectonically-active regions, such as Northern Italy.

    Description: The Baltic Sea is prone to oxygen deficiency due to the restricted water exchange with the North Sea in coincidence with a high biological oxygen demand. The partitioning of organic carbon between respiration, accumulation and export is co-determined by phytoplankton primary production and its subsequent bacterial remineralization. Here, we investigated net phytoplankton primary production, heterotrophic bacterial biomass production and dark CO2 fixation by on-board incubations with radiolabeled tracers in the Baltic Proper and in the Gulf of Riga after the main spring bloom. Results show that low phytoplankton standing stocks of ≤1.6 μg chlorophyll a L–1 sustained net primary production of 161–724 mg C m–2 d–1 under nitrogen limitation. Estimates of bacterial carbon remineralization suggest that freshly produced organic carbon was supplied to the aphotic zone at all stations. In the southern Baltic Proper, net primary production exceeded the bacterial carbon demand in the surface mixed layer, suggesting that organic matter derived from nutrient-limited primary production was available for export to bacterial communities below the oxycline. On average, 46% of heterotrophic bacterial production was mediated in oxygen minimum zones, revealing the high importance of organic matter recycling under hypoxic and anoxic conditions for the carbon budget. Dark CO2 fixation of up to 4.33 μg C L–1 d–1 in sulfide-free waters equaled 9–54% of the co-inciding heterotrophic bacterial carbon demand and may have provided another organic carbon source for heterotrophic activity. Substantially higher dark CO2 fixation up to 25.46 μg C L–1 d–1 was determined in sulfidic waters. Since our study was conducted 5 months after the major Baltic inflow event in winter 2014/2015, potential effects of deep water ventilation could be investigated. In the Gotland Basin, heterotrophic bacterial production in renewed oxygen-rich bottom water was similar to that in the uplifted oxygen-deficient former bottom water, while it was significantly reduced in sulfidic waters. Hence, our results suggest that the removal of hydrogen sulfide by inflow events has a high potential to increase bacterial carbon remineralization.

    Description: Cruise WND-V was the fifth and final expedition of the West Nile Delta project carried out at IFM-GEOMAR with support from RWE-Dea. On this concluding cruise of the project, the two mud volcanoes North Alex and Giza were once again visited, this time using the Greek R/V AEGAEO. The primary purpose of the WND-V cruise was the recovery of instruments and observatories which had been deployed in or near the active centers of North Alex and Giza MVs over the past 30 months. In addition, complementary new data were acquired that were needed to better quantify the methane flux from the centers of both MVs. From 15 to 25 June 2010, the following activities were carried out: · recovery of 12 long-term Ocean-Bottom-Seismometers (OBS) at North Alex MV, which had been deployed during POSEIDON cruise P388 in 2009. · recovery of 4 instruments for measuring long-term pore pressure variations (piezometers) on the slope near North Alex MV, deployed during POSEIDON cruise P388 in 2009. · recovery of 6 instruments for measuring long-term chemical flux (CATmeters) at Giza and North Alex MV. · recovery of 1 instrument (OBMets) for measuring methane flux from the seafloor at North Alex MV. · recovery of 2 tiltmeters for measuring seafloor deformation at North Alex MV. · recovery of 2 long-term temperature observatories at Giza and North Alex MV. · CTD casts in the central area of North Alex MV · Imaging of bubble streams from the active center of North Alex using an SIMRAD EK60 sonar system. Although hampered by poor weather during the final days of the cruise the recovery operations were finished two days earlier than expected. Bathymetric data acquisition however, which had been part of the original schedule had to be cancelled due to bad weather as well as technical problems with the deep water sonar systems.

    Description: Baltic blue mussels can colonise and dominate habitats with far lower salinity (〈 10 psu) than other Mytilus congeners. Pervasive gene flow was observed between Western Baltic Mytilus edulis living at high salinity conditions and Eastern Baltic M. trossulus living at lower salinites, with highest admixture proportions within a genetic transition zone located at intermediate salinities (Darss Sill area). Yet, we do not understand the impacts of low salinity on larval performance, and how salinity may act as an early selective pressure during passive larval drift across salinity gradients. This study tested whether larvae originating from two different populations along the natural salinity cline in the Baltic Sea have highest fitness at their native salinities. Our results suggest that Eastern Baltic M. trossulus (Usedom, 7 psu) and Western Baltic M. edulis (Kiel, 16 psu) larvae display better performance (fitness components: growth, mortality, settlement success) when reared at their respective native salinities. This suggests that these populations are adapted to their local environment. Additionally, species diagnostic markers were used for genetic analyses of transition zone (Ahrenshoop, 11 psu) mussel larvae exposed to low salinity. This revealed that low salinity selection resulted in a shift towards allele frequencies more typical for Eastern Baltic M. trossulus. Thus, salinity acts as a selective pressure during the pre-settlement phase and can shape the genetic composition of Baltic mussel populations driving local adaptation to low salinity. Future climate change driven desalination, therefore, has the potential to shift the Baltic Sea hybrid gradient westward with consequences for benthic ecosystem structure.

    Notes: The empirical equation, 1/ti = AeEi/RT, which expresses the exponential dependence of the reciprocal of crystallization induction time, ti, has been analyzed and shown to be equivalent to the nucleation rate equations derived earlier in Part III (1). Consequently we have used the ti measurements obtained earlier by Krueger and Yeh to calculate not only the nucleation rate enhancements but also the melting point elevations, the relative crystal thickness changes and molecular coil extension ratios of shear-crystallization polyethylene. It is shown that polyethylene when crystallized between 129 and 131°C at shear rates between 1.56 and 9.70 sec-1 can have melting point increases of 4.2 to 7.2°C and crystal thickness decreases of 20 to 25 percent, when compared to those crystallized at 130°C in the quiescent state. The predicted “coil” extension in the melt just prior to shear-induced crystallization ranges between 21 and 36 percent. The results of these analyses as well as those on nucleation rates of polyethylene oxide are discussed in detail.

    Description: Distinct events of warm and moist air intrusions (WAIs) from mid-latitudes have pronounced impacts on the Arctic climate system. We present a detailed analysis of a record-breaking WAI observed during the MOSAiC expedition in mid-April 2020. By combining Eulerian with Lagrangian frameworks and using simulations across different scales, we investigate aspects of air mass transformations via cloud processes and quantify related surface impacts. The WAI is characterized by two distinct pathways, Siberian and Atlantic. A moist static energy transport across the Arctic Circle above the climatological 90th percentile is found. Observations at research vessel Polarstern show a transition from radiatively clear to cloudy state with significant precipitation and a positive surface energy balance (SEB), i.e., surface warming. WAI air parcels reach Polarstern first near the tropopause, and only 1–2 days later at lower altitudes. In the 5 days prior to the event, latent heat release during cloud formation triggers maximum diabatic heating rates in excess of 20 K d-1. For some poleward drifting air parcels, this facilitates strong ascent by up to 9 km. Based on model experiments, we explore the role of two key cloud-determining factors. First, we test the role moisture availability by reducing lateral moisture inflow during the WAI by 30%. This does not significantly affect the liquid water path, and therefore the SEB, in the central Arctic. The cause are counteracting mechanisms of cloud formation and precipitation along the trajectory. Second, we test the impact of increasing Cloud Condensation Nuclei concentrations from 10 to 1,000 cm-3 (pristine Arctic to highly polluted), which enhances cloud water content. Resulting stronger longwave cooling at cloud top makes entrainment more efficient and deepens the atmospheric boundary layer. Finally, we show the strongly positive effect of the WAI on the SEB. This is mainly driven by turbulent heat fluxes over the ocean, but radiation over sea ice. The WAI also contributes a large fraction to precipitation in the Arctic, reaching 30% of total precipitation in a 9-day period at the MOSAiC site. However, measured precipitation varies substantially between different platforms. Therefore, estimates of total precipitation are subject to considerable observational uncertainty.

    Notes: The properties of the tetraazamacrocyclic compound N,N′-dimethyl-2,11-diaza[3,3](2,6)pyridinophane (L-N4Me2) as a ligand for some selected metal chlorides have been examined. The crystal structure of the uncoordinated ligand reveals a syn chair-chair conformation. In solution, the ligand displays fluctional behavior. Reaction of L-N4Me2 with the chlorides of copper(II), nickel(II), and cobalt(II) affords the complexes [Cu(L-N4Me2)Cl2] · H2O (3), [Ni(L-N4Me2)(H2O)Cl]Cl · H2O (4), and [Co(L-N4Me2)Cl2] · 2 H2O (5) in which the ligand adopts a syn boat-boat conformation. The crystal structures of 4 and 5 are presented. Due to the small cavity of the 12-membered ring of the ligand, exclusively distorted cis-octahedral coordination geometries are found at the metal sites. A comparison of structural data of several complexes with this ligand shows that the extent of the distortions from ideal octahedral geometry is mainly determined by the M-Npy bond strength. The electronic as well as the solution properties of the described complexes have been investigated by electronic absorption spectroscopy. ESR spectroscopy, and electrochemical methods.

    Description: This review is intended to highlight recent exciting advances in the study of distal (〉100 km from the source) tephra and cryptotephra deposits and their potential application for volcanology. Geochemical correlations of tephra between proximal and distal locations have extended the geographical distribution of tephra over tens of millions square kilometers. Such correlations embark on the potential to reappraise volume and magnitude estimates of known eruptions. Cryptotephra investigations in marine, lake and ice-core records also give rise to continuous chronicles of large explosive eruptions many of which were hitherto unknown. Tephra preservation within distal ice sheets and varved lake sediments permit precise dating of parent eruptions and provide new insight into the frequency of eruptions. Recent advances in analytical methods permit an examination of magmatic processes and the evolution of the whole volcanic belts at distances of hundreds and thousands of kilometers from source. Distal tephrochronology has much to offer volcanology and has the potential to significantly contribute to our understanding of sizes, recurrence intervals and geochemical make-up of the large explosive eruptions.

    Description: The main goal of the study is to establish the spatial and temporal distribution of pyroclastic material from large explosive eruptions of the volcanoes of Kamchatka, the Kuril, and Aleutian Islands to create a generalized tephrochronological model and reveal patterns of explosive activity in this region. This paper presents new data on the composition of volcanic ash (tephra) found in the Pleistocene deposits of the northwestern Pacific from the eastern slope of the Detroit Rise (northwestern part of the Imperial Ridge), 450–550 km east of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Eleven layers and lenses of tephra aged from 28 to 245 ka, which were previously unknown, were studied in the core Lv63-4-2. Their stratigraphic position and age were determined based on age models developed in this study. Based on the geochemical composition of volcanic glass (determined using an electron microprobe), seven layers were correlated with tephra from several cores in the northwestern Pacific and the Bering Sea. The obtained results supplement the information on large explosive eruptions of volcanoes in the region and their periods of activity. They also allow the development of a generalized tephrochronological model of Quaternary deposits, which is necessary for stratigraphic correlation, and of paleooceanological and paleogeographic reconstructions.
