Description: The determination of temperature distribution in the earth's crust and upper mantle is of great importance for geotectonic problems. The temperature distribution is discussed along a profile in southern Italy, which runs from the Adriatic to the Tyrrhenian Seas. This study is based on published heat flow values and seismic refraction data. The temperature-depth-functions are calculated for layer and exponential models for the heat production assuming a stationary state.

Description: This data volume presents a series of planktological observations carried out over a 19-year-period in Kiel Bight in the Western Baltic Sea. Three fixed stations (Boknis Eck: 1957 - 1975, Fehmarnbalt: 1951 - 1960, Breitgrund: 1960 - 1971) were visited at monthly intervals, and the plankton standing stock was investigated in relation to depth and environmental factors, employing a standard observation programme. This consisted in the measurement of temperature, salinity, (density), oxygen, (oxygen saturation), total phosphorus, PO4-phosphorus, seston, protein and chlorophyll a. Additional measurements comprised the caloric content of seston, particulate organic carbon and nitrogen (Boknis Eck: 1973 - 75), as well at dry weight and organic matter of p1ankton, sampled by vertical hauls of three plankton nets of different mesh size: 55 µm, 100 µm and 300 µm {Boknis Eck: 1963 - 75).

Description: Bulk composition of ferromanganese nodules from the pelagic environment of the Pacific Ocean is apparently related to nodule-growth rate, sediment-accumulation rate, and biologic productivity in the overlying seawater. Nodules with a high Mn/Fe ratio and high Ni and Cu concns tend to occur in areas where primary productivity in the surface layer of the ocean is high and the sediment accumulation rate low. They may have a Mn/Fe ratio as low as one and accrete at rates as low as 1 mm per 1 million years. Nodules with a larger Mn/Fe ratio apparently have growth rates that are greater by as much as a factor of 10.

    Publication Date: 2024-04-16
Description: The continental slope and rise, east of Newfoundland, accommodates two distinct gravel populations. The upper slope (300-700 m depth) population is characterized by unstained, granules to boulders of predominantly granitic and terrigenous sedimentary compositon that show affinity to Paleozoic and Proterozoic rocks of Newfoundland and areas further north. The rise (2,500-〉3,000 m depth) population consists of iron- and ferromanganese-stained granules to cobbles composed mainly of carbonate that presumably has been derived from the high Canadian Arctic. The rise clasts are further distinguished in that they are finer grained, slightly more rounded and more altered by solution and/or boring organisms than their shallower water counterparts. The upper slope gravel has been reworked from underlying sediments, and deposited from ice rafts, and both processes are probably continuing today. Gravel on the rise has been concentrated through winnowing of middle Holocene sediments by the Western Boundary Undercurrent which appears to have been operative as a winnowing agent since about 4,000 to 5,000 y BP. The undercurrent has also affected the distribution of stained gravel which is most common and most intensely stained beneath a fast-flowing undercurrent core where environmental conditions resemble those documented for deep-sea, ferromanganese nodule fields.

Description: Phosphate deposits which apparently formed during the Miocene climatic optimum are widespread on the Chatham Rise and Camp bell Plateau, and on seamounts in the north Tasman Sea. They formed under oxidising conditions by the phosphatisation of older or contemporaneous foraminiferal oozes (Campbell Plateau and Chatham Rise) and coral limestones (Tasman Sea). The phosphorites of the rise and plateau were formed where current activity was sufficiently strong to prevent normal sedimentation, and now form lag deposits. After the Miocene, phosphorite formation ceased and was followed by manganese oxide deposition where conditions were highly oxidising on the eastern Campbell Plateau and north Tasman seamounts, and by glauconite formation in the much less oxidising environments of the western Campbell Plateau and the Chat ham Rise. The manganese deposits are not volcanogenic, as was formerly thought, but formed by slow precipitation from well oxygenated sea water.

Description: Samples of algae and sediment were taken between July 1973 and May 1975 at intervals of 2-5 weeks from a number of depths at the entrance of Eckernförder Bay (Western Baltic Seal. The purpose was to ascertain the correlation between the settlement of foraminifera and ecofactors, and to determine the annual carbonate production by foraminifera. Produection data were compared with the foraminifera content of the sediments. Information on the extend and place of dissolution could be gained by measuring the saturation of the water with mineral carbonates. The exact area of colonisation (=sediment surfaee, in the sediment or on algae, Fig. 6) was determined for the most important speeies of the Western Baltie. Reproductions were not regulated by one environmental factor, but rather by a number of these. Here the abiotic parameters appear to play the more important part. The conditions necessary for the start of a reproduction can, however, also be fulfilled by the presence of symbiotic algae or increased food avai1ability (Fig. 6). The growth of the foraminifera lasts 3 to 5 months. Carbonate production by foraminifera amounts to between 0.1 and 0.04 g CaC03/m**2 pa in the residual sediment area and up to 3.12 g CaCO3/m**2 pa in the basins. The species living on algae only produce up to 0.003 g CaCO3/m**2 pa (Tab. 9, Fig. 9). The carbonate production figures are only 1-3 % of those reached by the large foraminifera in tropical latitudes, however, similar values were found in the Adriatic. Only 0-3 % of the carbonate produced by the foraminifera is preserved (Tab. 11). In the residual sediment area all foraminiferal carbonate produced is destroyed or washed out. The highest preservation was found in the deepest basins; here, not only is more produced, but also more is preserved. In the sha1lower part of the area of investigation the tests are destroyed by the continual restratification of the sediment and also through being washed out and transported away. In the deeper areas dissolution and predation are major faetors. For some months of the year the water column is under-saturated with mineral carbonates, while there is over-saturation in the interstitial water below a sediment depth of about 1 cm. Therefore tests must be dissolved on the surface or in the uppermost millimetres of the sediment. The quantity of calcareous foraminifera in the sediments is regulated by the following factors: a) intensity of water movement, b) oxygen content of the bottom water (regulates settlement of macrobenthos and bacterial growth), e) rate of sedimentation, d) grain size composition of the sediment. A far more important part than previously assumed is played by the burrowing macrobenthos. The animals transport some foraminifera tests from the sediment surface, where they are exposed to dissolution, into the deeper parts of the sediment, where they can be preserved. On the other hand high colonisation density of macroorganisms feeding on substrate and foraminifera can, in extreme cases, lead to the total destruction of the tests.

So verlangen z.B.

Description: 1. Samples of benthic invertebrate fauna were collected in – a ditch, situated in a protected area in the peaty area near the Maarsseveense plassen (prov. Utrecht), – four ditches in the neighbourhood of Castricum (N-Holland), not far from the dune district, – two ditches with water of a high chloride-content on Texel (N- Holland). 2. The faunistic results, with the additional information of some physical and chemical data on the different sampling points, made it possible to draw some conclusions concerning – the importance of the factor salinity for a faunistically oriented typology of ditches, – the importance of the group Hydracarina for a classification of ditch-biocenoses, – the influence of artificial current, caused by the inlet of water, on the invertebrate fauna of ditches and on the faunistical evaluation of the pollution-level in ditches.

Description: Im Jahr 1968 haben FLEIGE, MEYER u.

Description: Die Humifizierungswechsel nordwesteuropäischer Hochmoore sind als Schwarztorf-Weißtorf-Kontakte‚ Rekurrenzflächen oder "WEBERscher Grenzhorizont" bekannt.
Description: The changes of humification of North-West European bogs are known as dark peat/light peat contacts, recurrence horizons or "WEBERscher Grenzhorizont". A similar phenomenon has been discovered on Gough Island in the South Atlantic. There is also dark peat/light peat contact in the blanket bogs over there. These blanket bogs on Gough Island are richer in nutrients than our North-West European bogs. The cause of this phenomenon is the accumulation of nutrients through the dropping of the numerous seabirds.

Description: Macrofossil investigations had been made of a submerged mire covered by marsh clay nearby Rechtenfleth/Krs. Wesermünde (Federal Republic of Germany). The results point out a repeated change of the vegetation. The peat formation started with an alder swamp. Sedge meadows, reed associations and sphagnum bogs followed later. The applicability of the results for regeneration of moist locations is demonstrated.

Description: The plant communities of various raised bogs of the Tierra del Fuego were investigated according to the method BRAUN-BLANQUET. The investigated bogs are in the Argentine part of Tierra del Fuego in the vicinity of Ushuaia. The available examination material shows two new bog plant communities: Carici magellanici-Sphagnetum fimbriati [and] Pernettyo-Sphagnetum. The Carici magellanici-Sphagnetum fimbriati corresponds to the European Caricetum limosae. The Pernettyo-Sphagnetum belongs to the Oxycocco-Sphagnetea. Further classification can be decided only after more material from the bogs of the southern hemisphere available for examination. The characteristic chemical values are similar to those of the North-German raised bogs. The higher pH-, K-, Ca-, Mg- and Na-values indicate that the bogs of Tierra del Fuego are close to the ocean.
