Beschreibung: We provide seismological data from a huddle test in Fürstenfeldbruck in August 2019 that was realized by University of Potsdam (PI: Eva Eibl) in collaboration with BGR (PI: Stefanie Donner) and LMU (PI: Felix Bernauer). 5 rotational sensors (blueSeis-3A) and 3 seismometers (Trillium Horizon 120s Nanometrics) were installed on a decoupled basement in a building of the Geophysical Observatory Fürstenfeldbruck. The seismometers were isolated with black foam rubber and white cotton. We recorded passive seismological data for one week and recorded noise, coherent noise sources and the August 29, 2019 ML 3.4 Dettingen earthquake. The aim of the seismic experiment is to compare the performance of rotational sensors and seismometers with respect to different coherent and incoherent noise sources. The noise level, spectral content of the coherent noise and back azimuth of the Dettingen earthquake was further investigated for all sensors using correlation, coherence analysis and probabilistic power spectral densities in Izgi et al. (2021). Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code X3 under CC-BY 4.0 license.

Beschreibung: Climate change is one of the most pressing political issues of our time. Science is uncovering the unprecedented nature and scale of its impacts on people, economies and ecosystems worldwide. One critical dimension of these impacts is their effect on international peace and security. This report summarises the state of knowledge regarding security risks related to climate change. To this end, it synthesises and contextualises the existing scientific evidence. It does not reflect all aspects of the debate that have emerged across social science but focuses on those that are particularly relevant at the political level.Climate change itself is rarely a direct cause of conflict. Yet, there is ample evidence that its effects exacerbate important drivers and contextual factors of conflict and fragility, thereby challenging the stability of states and societies.

Beschreibung: The authors of the 10 Must Knows from Biodiversity Science (2022, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.6257527, 10MustKnows) have developed their scientific findings further into 10 Must Dos from Biodiversity Science (10MustDos). The 10MustDos correspond with ten concrete recommendations for political actions that can be implemented in the short term. They are intended to serve as a guide for negotiations at the 15th UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP 15, 7-19 December 2022 in Montréal). In addition, they also aim at supporting practical policy-making in Germany, Europe and worldwide through well-founded scientific knowledge with the overarching goal to protect global biodiversity and to stop the man-made extinction of species. The proposed solutions open up possibilities for action which are in alignment with the goals of the UN Decade for the Restoration of Ecosystems (2021-2030) and contribute to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are to be implemented by all states by 2030 in order to tackle the biodiversity, climate, and equity crisis collectively.

Beschreibung: In the 10 Must Knows from Biodiversity Science 45 scientists present facts about biodiversity in a well-founded and generally intelligible way. They analyse the complex systems of the earth by highlighting ten key areas, each of which, in turn, is inextricably linked to all the others. And they show ways to stop the continued loss of species diversity and ecosystems, and to promote biodiversity. The underlying aim is to provide policy-makers and society with scientifically validated assessments of the latest knowledge to facilitate improved policy decisions and action at local, regional, national and global levels, in order to conserve the diversity of life – biodiversity. These are the 10MustKnows 2022: 1. Achieving climate and biodiversity protection together 2. Strengthening planetary health 3. Considering hidden biodiversity 4. Promoting biocultural habitats 5. Using forests sustainably 6. Transforming agriculture 7. Protecting land and resources 8. Expanding transnational infrastructure and education for sustainability 9. Ensuring access and open use of research data 10. Setting biodiversity-friendly incentives

Beschreibung: As reverse weathering has been shown to impact long‐term changes in atmospheric CO2 levels, it is crucial to develop quantitative tools to reconstruct marine authigenic clay formation. We explored the potential of the beryllium (Be) isotope ratio (10Be/9Be) recorded in marine clay‐sized sediment to track neoformation of authigenic clays. The power of such proxy relies on the orders‐of‐magnitude difference in 10Be/9Be ratios between continental Be and Be dissolved in seawater. On marine sediments collected along a Chilean margin transect we chemically extracted reactive phases and separated the clay‐sized fraction to compare the riverine and marine 10Be/9Be ratio of this fraction. 10Be/9Be ratios increase fourfold from riverine to marine sediment. We attribute this increase to the incorporation of Be high in 10Be/9Be from dissolved biogenic opal, which also serves as a Si‐source for the precipitation of marine authigenic clays. 10Be/9Be ratios thus sensitively track reverse‐weathering reactions forming marine authigenic clays.

Beschreibung: The bioavailability of molecular oxygen is considered a driving force for the evolution of phenotypic complexity, yet the geological history of biological oxygen production remains poorly constrained. Fossilized 2-methylhopanoids (2-methylhopanes) were once considered diagnostic for the presence of cyanobacteria and oxygenic photosynthesis. However, the subsequent discovery of C-2 hopanoid methyltransferase (hpnP) in non-cyanobacterial species questioned the utility of 2-methylhopanes as cyanobacterial biomarkers. Here we re-examined the distribution of HpnP in the bacterial domain and the evolutionary history of HpnP. Our results suggest that HpnP did not originate within α-proteobacteria but rather was already present in the common ancestor of cyanobacteria, contrary to previous inferences. Molecular clock analyses further suggest that the emergence of HpnP in cyanobacteria substantially predates the emergence of HpnP in α-proteobacteria and 2-methylhopanes in rocks deposited prior to 1.2 Ga are inferred to be derived uniquely from cyanobacteria. Our results imply that 2-methylhopanes can theoretically allow us to trace the rise of oxygenic photosynthesis even prior to the GOE if suitable sedimentary sequences or preservation windows should be found in the future.

Beschreibung: This dataset is composed of three-season simulated EnMAP mosaics for the Lake Tahoe region, USA. HyspIRI Airborne Campaign AVIRIS imagery from spring, summer and fall formed the basis for simulating EnMAP data with 30 m spatial resolution and 195 spectral bands ranging from 420 to 2450 nm. The mosaics are provided as Analysis-Ready-Datasets (tiled surface reflectance products) to be used for regional-scale and multi-season hyperspectral image analysis of California’s diverse ecoregions. The dataset primarily intends to support the development of processing algorithms and to demonstrate spaceborne hyperspectral data capabilities during the pre-launch activities of the forthcoming EnMAP mission. This dataset was processed in line with companion simulated EnMAP mosaics for the San Francisco Bay Area and for the Santa Barbara region.

Beschreibung: This dataset is composed of simulated EnMAP mosaics for the San Francisco Bay Area, USA. Hyperspectral imagery used for the EnMAP simulation was collected across three time periods (Spring, Summer, and Fall) in 2013 with the AVIRIS-Classic sensor flown as part of the HyspIRI Preparatory Campaign. Flight lines were simulated to EnMAP-like data using the EnMAP end-to end Simulation tool to produce 30 x 30 m imagery with 195 bands (after band removal) ranging from 423 to 2439 nm. Secondary geometric correction was applied using automatically generated tie points, and a class-wise empirical across track brightness correction was implemented to mitigate brightness gradients.
