Description: Migraine affects 25% of the population and is the 2nd most incapacitating disease in women between the ages of 25 and 50, according to studies by the World Health Organization. It is multiple and complex in its clinical expression as well as in its causes and treatments. Add to this the fact that it is not visible on clinical examination or brain scan, and you will understand why it can suffer from a triple distortion of perception: 1) perceived by the patient's entourage as a "non-disease" not deserving of any interest; 2) perceived by the patient as a fatality with no real effective treatment; 3) perceived by all as a mysterious disease about which a host of misconceptions (fake news) are circulating In this book, I try to separate the wheat from the chaff among the information circulating on migraine, based on 40 years of clinical experience and research at the University of Liege. I hope to show migraine sufferers that their migraine is not a fatality, but a neurological disease where research progress in recent decades has paved the way to increasingly effective treatments. To do so, I will illustrate my remarks with scientific data, sometimes specialized, because I believe that migraine sufferers will understand them if they are presented clearly and illustrated (106 figures and tables), and that it is in their interest to know them in order to be able to form their personal opinion with full knowledge of the facts. This book will therefore also be useful for caregivers of migraine sufferers. I also hope to convince non-migraine sufferers from all walks of life that this is a disabling disease, which, although not lethal, kills the quality of life and can undermine a life, a couple or a professional career. Like other diseases, it deserves the interest of relatives, employers, academics and policy makers.

Description: The design work carried out on the city of Portici represented, for the students in the last year of the Master’s Program in Architecture 5UE, an important experiment, from a design and professional point of view, towards the development of an approach aimed at finding an adequate and factual response to the multiple needs posed by the reality of the context in which it operates. The book collects the results of the work carried out during the 2019-2020 academic year, highlighting the multiplicity of aspects and design topics addressed, as well as the variety of the proposed solutions. The structure of the book reflects this experimental approach, starting with the exploration of some preliminary topics and methods, examined in the “Essays” section; continuing through the study of the “collaborative mapping” and the interaction with the environment and with the people who live in these places; finally, working on assembling and defining a “synthesis” of data and investigations through the design proposals, described in the “Projects” section. To try to solve the existing critical issues, yet to enhance the potential and the various heritage of the city of Portici, the project proposals were built grafting into the existing, not oriented towards the definition of a closed form and a predetermined function. On the contrary, it has implied to work on the idea of an open form, which reuses and recycles what already exists, including multiple possibilities of use and continuously changing its perimeter, extending and incorporating urban pieces of different nature. Scenarios of new possible meanings and new urban transformations are, therefore, the result of this work, made up of different levels of study and research related to the overall idea of Portici as a “City-Park”.

Description: “1-month seismological experiment on Etna, Italy in 2019" is a 1-month seismological experi-ment realized near the Pizzi Deneri Observatory on Etna, Italy, by Eva Eibl and Daniel Vollmer (University of Potsdam) in collaboration with Philippe Jousset from GFZ Potsdam Germany and Gilda Currenti and Graziano Larocca from INGV-OE, Italy. From August to September 2019, we recorded the volcano-seismic events accompanying the volcanic activity using a rotational sensor and a co-located seismometer. The aim of the seismological experiment was to study LP events, VT events and tremor. We used a 3-component broadband seismometer (Nanometrics Trillium Compact 120 s) and a 3-component rotational sensor (iXblue blueSeis-3A) and stored the data on a DataCube and CommunicationCube, respectively. Sensors were installed on the same 35 * 35 * 3 cm3 granitic base plate at about 40 cm depth enclosed by backfilled pyroclastic material to avoid wind noise. The instruments recorded at 200 Hz sampling rate and were located about 2 km from the craters on Etna. The setup was powered using 3 solar panels of 140W each and three batteries of 75Ah each. We oriented the rotational sensor and seismometer using a Quadrans fiber-optical gyrocompass. The Quadrans is not affected by magnetic minerals in the ground and our sensors are hence properly aligned to geographic north. We converted the seismometer data to MSEED using Pyrocko’s Jackseis program and created a catalogs of LP events and VT events that were further investigated in Eibl et al. 2022. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code ZR.

Description: Within the scope of the events of the 2019 Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Year, under the auspices of our Presidency and with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in partnership with Istanbul University, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University, and the Fuat Sezgin Islamic Science History Research Foundation, we had the honor of hosting the first International Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Symposium of Islamic History of Science on 13-15 June at Istanbul University. Our late Professor Fuat Sezgin, who questioned and evaluated the role of Islamic civilization in the development of sciences with a scientific attitude instead of taking a reactionary defensive stance against the views that limit the role of Islamic civilization in its contribution to inter-civilizational transfer only in certain historical periods, earned an unforgettable place in the history of Islamic science while he was still alive with the dozens of works he published with his commentary, hundreds of volumes of books he uncovered, nearly a thousand scientific tools he unearthed, the scientific institutions he pioneered, and the scientists he inspired. By remembering our late Professor Fuat Sezgin, who, despite all the obstacles and difficulties he faced, faithfully and patiently devoted his entire life to showing the place of the sciences developed in the Islamic world in the international history of science, and especially to objectively revealing the role of Islamic sciences in the development of the history of Western science, we hope to be able to make a modest contribution in terms of passing his scientific legacy on to future generations. The symposium we held to honor the legacy of Fuat Sezgin by remembering the works he carried out during his lifetime and to express our gratitude to him was attended by nearly 100 worthy academicians in the field of the history of science from 21 different countries, and this legacy left behind by our late Professor was honored with a total of 79 papers presented over three days. Prepared as a tangible fruit of the symposium and a permanent expression of our gratitude to our late Professor, this proceedings book has been created with the contributions of the esteemed academicians who participated in the symposium. It consists of an introduction section of three articles written on the life and works of our late Professor, and 38 articles in English, Arabic, and Turkish categorized under the titles of Fuat Sezgin’s Contributions to the History of Science, Astronomy, Mathematics, Medicine, Geography, Natural Sciences, and Islamic Studies. Hoping that this proceedings book we have published will have an important place in the history of Islamic Science literature and make a significant contribution to the field with the belief that it will open the horizons of young researchers, we are grateful to have the opportunity to thank the individuals and institutions for their support in organizing this important event and the preparation of this proceedings book. We would like to express our gratitude to the Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Islamic Science History Research Foundation (IBTAV) Board of Trustees Member N. Bilal Erdoğan, IBTAV Founding President Ethem Sancak, IBTAV Board Chairman Mecit Çetinkaya, former Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism and Zeytinburnu Mayor Ömer Arısoy, the General Director of the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation Ibrahim Eren, the Founding Rector of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University Prof. Dr. Musa Duman, and the Rector of Kırıkkale University Prof. Dr. Ersan Aslan who was the Coordinator of the 2019 Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Year, and in particular to the honorary board members of our symposium, Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin’s esteemed spouse Dr. Ursula Sezgin and their daughter Journalist and Writer Hilâl Sezgin for their participation and support. We would like to thank the Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Islamic Science History Research Foundation, the Ministry of Culture, Turkish Airlines, Fatih Municipality, and Üsküdar Municipality for providing financial support to our symposium. The Science and Regulation Board and our Secretariat successfully carried out the process of organizing our symposium and the publication of our book. We would like to especially thank the scientists working in the field of Islamic science history from many countries around the world who contributed to our Symposium with their papers. History of Islamic science studies include a wide range of disciplines from mathematics, astronomy, medicine and other natural sciences to philosophy and social sciences. The goal and vision of our late Professor Fuat Sezgin, who took a holistic approach to all these sciences mentioned, shows us that there are many more studies to be done in this field. The ideas and works left behind by our Professor will be a guide for many scientific studies with research that will be carried out in the coming years.

Description: Dataset containing surface snow measurements of snow specific surface area (SSA), snow density and snow accumulation. Surface samples were taken from the surface 2.5cm of snow. SSA measurements were determined using an Ice Cube measuring device (Zuanon, 2013). Snow density was measured from the SSA samples with a fixed volume. Snow accumulation describes the change in surface height at each sample site. All measured parameters have 10 daily samples taken at 10m intervals over a 90m transect. Sampling was carried out daily between May and August of 2016-2019, at approximately 24hr time intervals. All measurements were taken at the East Greenland Ice Core Project site (EastGRIP) situated in the accumulation zone of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

Description: A single line of code offers a way to understand the cultural context of computing. This book takes a single line of code—the extremely concise BASIC program for the Commodore 64 inscribed in the title—and uses it as a lens through which to consider the phenomenon of creative computing and the way computer programs exist in culture. The authors of this collaboratively written book treat code not as merely functional but as a text—in the case of 10 PRINT, a text that appeared in many different printed sources—that yields a story about its making, its purpose, its assumptions, and more. They consider randomness and regularity in computing and art, the maze in culture, the popular BASIC programming language, and the highly influential Commodore 64 computer.
