In:  Supplement to: McDuff, Russell E (1985): The chemistry of interstitial waters, Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 86. In: Heath GR; Burckle LH; et al. (eds.), Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, Washington (U.S. Govt. Printing Office), 86, 675-687, https://doi.org/10.2973/dsdp.proc.86.131.1985
    Publication Date: 2024-05-22
Description: Interstitial water samples from Leg 86 were analyzed for Cl-, SO42-, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ , Li+ , Sr2+, Mn2+, Si, NO3-, NH4+ , and d18O. The principal findings are as follows. (1) The chloride profiles consistently show a about 1.5% downcore increase to about 40 m sub-bottom depth. This increase is consistent with model profiles generated by considering the effects of variations in seawater salinity resulting from Pleistocene glaciation on pore-water composition. d18O profiles support this model. This agreement of model and observation precludes advection of the pore fluids at rates greater than 1 mm/yr. (2) Ca2+ and Mg2+ gradients are small relative to other Deep Sea Drilling Project sites, likely resulting from low diffusive fluxes through underlying chert horizons. (3) Other constituents exhibit profiles consistent with previous observations.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: Translation of the abstract: The articles in the collection make a certain contribution to the development of a systematic approach to understanding the morphological features of our planet. Their authors came to the conclusion that the classification of relief should be based on the balance principle, since the movement of mineral masses both on the surface of the Earth and in the horizons of the litho- and asthenosphere constitutes the dryness of morphogenesis - the leading form of movement of matter that determines the dynamic state of any geomorphological system and allowing one to predict its stability under the influence of various anthropogenic influences. The book is intended for specialists working in the field of geology, geomorphology and geography.

Description: In 1975 two specimens of O. crocata were found in the dunes of Voorne. Since then the number increased to c. 50. The species is described and compared to other umbelliferous species, as it is likely to be mistaken for Petroselinum crispum or Apium graveolens vegetatively. Different observations on the smell of the plant and the colour of its juice are mentioned. The plant is virulently poisonous, which is illustrated with some references from literature. Its Atlantic-Westmediterranean area (fig. 2) has been reconstructed from literature and herbarium collections; somewhat uncertain is a record from Morocco. From an old collection its presence along the Northwest-coast of Italy could be confirmed. The habitats in Voorne, Normandy and Jersey are described and compared, also with records from other localities. At the localities in the northern part of France and in Holland it grows in coastal habitats characterized by a considerable seepage of fresh water rather rich in carbonates.

Description: Sedimentological and geotechnical analyses were carried out on two undisturbed large diameter deep sea cores from the Antarctic sector of the Atlantic ocean. One core, from a silled basin within the Bransfield Strait is characterized by fine grained hemipelagic material and turbidite layers. The other core, from the continental slope of the Weddell Sea represents a typical glacial marine environment. The variations of physical properties as related to both an increasing overburden pressure (or depth below top of core) and/or to lithological changes are discussed.

In:  Supplement to: Baumann, Karl-Heinz (1985): Quantitative Zusammensetzung und Verteilung der Sandfraktion in den Oberflächensedimenten vom NW-afrikanischen Kontinentalhang. Diploma Thesis, Geologisch-Paläontologisches Institut, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, Germany, 80 pp, hdl:10013/epic.30822.d001
    Publication Date: 2024-02-03

Description: The tridentigera group is one of four groups within the genus Chremistica St\xc3\xa5l, 1870. Its monophyly is based upon genitalia characters. The group comprises 11 species, of which 4 are redescribed and 3 are described as new ( (C. minor, C. siamensis, C. biloba). The remaining 4 species are endemic to the Philippines and are not redescribed. A key to the males, distribution maps, a phylogenetic reconstruction and a historical biogeographic hypothesis are presented. The tridentigera group is distributed in Southern India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Laos, Malaya, Sumatra, Kalimantan and the Philippines.

Description: Using the ability of selective uptake by the neurons of their own secreted amines, two 3H labeled neurotransmitters were used: 5-hydroxytryptamine (5 HT, serotonin) and noradrenaline (NA). Autoradiographic study was conducted on semithin and on ultrathin sections.\nIn the brain, 3H-5 HT labeling is observed in the frontal lobes of the protocerebrum (two pairs of neurons) and in the lateral areas of the deutocerebrum and tritocerebrum (three or four pairs of neurons). A pair of labeled neurons is also present in each ganglion of the posterior part of the ventral nerve cord.\nIn the protocerebrum, 3H-NA is taken up by a pair of neurons located in the frontal lobes; two pairs of noradrenergic neurons can be found in each ganglion of the nerve cord.\nLabeled axons (5-HT and NA) are present in the brain and in the neuropils of the abdominal ganglions. The pathway of some cerebral axons can be followed in the perioesophageal connectives and in the cerebral glands.\nThese results are in agreement with the effects of injected neurotransmitters on (1) the brain electrical activity and (2) the stimulated activity of some of the protocerebral neurons (ultrastructural study by Jamault-Navarro in preparation).

Description: Comparison between two populations of the spirostreptid millipede Archispirostreptus syriacus reveals that there are no significant differences in the pattern of development between the xeric population (in Brosh) and the mesic one (in Megiddo). However, there is a difference in the duration of larval stages resulting in higher growth rates in the xeric population than in the mesic one. In Megiddo there are 11 larval stages and maturity is reached at the age of 8 years, following 3 adult stages. In Brosh maturity is reached at the age of 6 years after 12 larval stages, followed by 4 adult stages.\nEggs that are laid in Brosh during May are significantly heavier then those laid in Megiddo during July-August. Similarly, there is a significant difference in the caloric value of the eggs from both habitats and probably in their water content as well.

Description: Topography and fine structural organization of coxal organs and anal organs are compared in pleurostigmophorous chilopods. Each of the coxal or anal pores leads into a cuticle-lined pore channel, the bottom of which is surrounded by a single-layered epithelium. The epithelium is composed of different cell types, except for the larval anal organs of Lithobius forficatus. The main epithelial cells show a fine structure like transport-active cells with enlargements of the cell surfaces, plasmalemma-mitochondrial complexes and a widened subcuticle. The main epithelium is surrounded by junctional cells, exocrine glands, and the cells of the pore channel. A distinct mucous layer, containing mucopolysaccharides, covers the specialized cuticle of the transporting epithelium, and is secreted by the exocrine glands. The entire epithelium is separated from the hemolymph by an inner cellular sheath.\nIn Lithobius forficatus the coxal organs transport Na+ ions into the hemolymph, resulting in an increase of the Na+ ion concentration.\nOn the other hand, the coxal organs of L. forficatus are also capable of absorbing water vapour from the atmosphere. An analogous function is assumed for the similarly structured coxal organs and anal organs of other chilopods.

Description: Specimens of the centipede Lithobius variegatus and the millipede Glomeris marginata collected from uncontaminated sites, and sites contaminated with heavy metals, have been fed on tissues from the terrestrial isopod Oniscus asellus and leaf litter, respectively, containing different concentrations of zinc, cadmium, lead and copper. The extent to which these elements are accumulated by Lithobius variegatus or Glomeris marginata depends on the amounts of metals in the food and the degree of contamination of the site from which the centipedes and millipedes are collected. The tissues within the body where metals are stored are compared in the two animals and suggestions are made of the areas which are in most need of further research.

Description: Ommatoiulus moreleti is a julid millipede native of Spain and Portugal. It has been introduced into Australia, where it has become a considerable pest, and also into Madeira, where it is now reported to be the commonest species of millipede.\nIn April and August 1981 an expediton from the University of Manchester Zoology Department visited Madeira and collections of the species were made in a variety of locations and habitats. The sex, instar and dimensions of each individual were later determined.\nThe stadial distributions at different altitudes are given for April and August.\nA pattern is found with difference in altitude which varies between the times of the year studied. This variation is discussed with reference to the climate of different parts of the island.

The tolerable water loss, expressed as a percentage of the initial body water, varied between 21 % (E. nanus) and 44.2% ( L. saltuvagus).\nThe uptake of water by eversion of rectal tissue onto moist surface seems to be an important source of water gain. Dehydrated animals of M. mutabilis absorbed at a maximal rate of 79% h-1. The ecological implications of these facts are discussed.

Description: In the Foljuif Forest (Seine-et-Marne, France), the millipede community is composed of five main species. A seasonal sampling has been made in the litter and soil layers: L, F, H, A11, A12 and A13. Millipedes are always absent in the deepest sandy layers. The spatial distribution is described for the five specific populations along the annual cycle 1982/83. The average density is 169 ind./m2 for the millipede community and 133 ind./m2 for the dominant species Cylindroiulus punctatus.\nOn a scale of 1/16 m2, the coexistence of several species is permanent. The coexistence patterns of C. punctatus and C. nitidus in 1/4 m2 are compared with the previous results obtained on a scale of 1/16 m2, which shows a mutual exclusion tendency.

The hypothesis is discussed with reference to Scolopendra spp. of the eastern Mediterranean, north-east Africa and Arabia.\nWhere species of Scolopendra with virtually identical spinulation on the last legs are sympatric, a large size difference exists between them.\nIt is suggested that in some genera where the prefemoral spines are absent, speciation may have been inhibited. In the genus Otostigmus where spines may be absent or spine patterns are very similar in a number of species other secondary sexual characters have developed.

Description: Comparisons of neurohemal organs in Insecta and Myriapoda are made. The structure of the corpora cardiaca, the paraesophageal bodies and the blood sinus formations are paralleled. Some Diplopoda possess three protocerebral systems, among which the paraesophageal bodies \xe2\x80\x93 blood sinus formations system and the basic myriapodan lateral one. Diplopod paraesophageal bodies and blood sinus formations are reminiscent of the insect \xe2\x80\x9caortal complex\xe2\x80\x9d system. Chaudonneret\xe2\x80\x99s idea of two primitive lateral cords inherited from an annelid ancestor is adopted. His homology of corpora cardiaca and paraesophageal bodies is defended. The present study supports the view that Myriapoda and Hexapoda have a common ancestor.

Description: A third species of the hypogean genus Curassanthura Kensley, 1981 (Isopoda, Anthuridea, Paranthuridae) is described from a cave on Bermuda. C. bermudensis n. sp. is very similar to C. halma Kensley, 1981, hitherto known from Cura\xc3\xa7ao, and now also recorded from new localities on Bonaire.

Description: The phylogenetic relationships of the chilopod orders are discussed on the basis of cladistic principles. The autapomorphies of the five orders (Scutigeromorpha, Lithobiomorpha, Craterostigmomorpha, Scolopendromorpha, and Geophilomorpha) are summarized. The monophyly of the Epimorpha is established. Craterostigmus is tentatively regarded as belonging to the epimorph branch. The Lithobiomorpha are united with the Epimorpha on the ground of a great number of common characters which must be classified as synapomorphies. A detailed phylogenetic tree is proposed. The probable characteristics of the chilopod ancestor are worked out.

Description: Analysis of geographical distribution and comparative morphology in Vipera ursinii from Romania leads to the following results: 1. The population from F\xc3\xaena\xc5\xa3ele Clujului, which does not exist anymore, belonged to the subspecies V. ursinii rakosiensis. 2. Populations from Moldavia show a mixture of features of V. ursinii rakosiensis and V. ursinii renardi, representing a secondary area of intergression. 3. Populations from the Danube Delta are also in some ways intermediate between V. ursinii rakosiensis and V. ursinii renardi. They present some particular features too. But it would be unwise to describe a separate geographical race from this area. It is better to wait for more material and to ascribe provisionally the Danube Delta to the area of the oriental subspecies V. ursinii renardi.

Description: The Scarlet Ibis, Eudocimus ruber (Linnaeus), fam. Threskiornithidae, is the closest relative of the White Ibis, Eudocimus albus (Linnaeus). The two species live in adjoining geographical areas. Nothing is known about the Scarlet Ibis\xe2\x80\x99s breeding biology in the wild and only little about its breeding biology in captivity. A better understanding of the breeding of this species in captivity should help to improve its management and also to elucidate its relationship with its much better known counterpart, the White Ibis.\nThree types of display behaviour are recognized in courtship: the snap display, the dipping snap display and twig pulling. The latter occurs also in greeting ceremonies, together with the up-down display, and as a precopulatory activity. Breeding pairs are stable for one breeding cycle, but occasionally promiscuous matings can be observed. Of 16 birds breeding in 1982, 12 bred again in 1983, all with a different partner.\nEgg laying is preceded by a period of increasing appearance of both members of the couple together on the nest, where copulation takes place. Nests contain 2-3 eggs, which are incubated for 21-23 days. Hatching is indicated by a sudden decrease in incubation. Hatching failure can be succeeded by the laying of replacement clutches. Nesting failures were due to destruction of nests or young, often resulting from disturbances by humans or domestic cats. One pair incubated for over 4 months without apparent interruption, probably without eggs being present for most of the time.\nFemales spend more time incubating than males. Nest reliefs occur at a much higher rate (ca. 1 per hour) than in the wild (ca. 2 per day). For up to 3 weeks after hatching, one parent bird stays at the nest almost continuously. Unattended nests are quickly visited by other birds, predominantly males. One parent, mostly the male, almost immediately chases an intruder away. Slight variations in breeding behaviour could not be correlated with breeding success.\nA dominance hierarchy could be distinguished between adult birds. Aggressive encounters consisted of three different behaviour patterns: fighting, forward threat and stab-and-counter stab. Often one bird gave way to another without overt signs of aggression. The hierarchy was not linear but could be subdivided into three groupings. The status of a bird was sex-dependent, correlated with weight and length of the bill, but not with nest-ownership or age.\nThe breeding behaviour of the Scarlet Ibis and the White Ibis seems to be so similar that, bearing in mind their similarity in morphology, the question may be posed whether they are conspecific.

Description: The stygobiont gammarids of Haiti are more diversified than anywhere else in the world: not less than 13 species (all new) in 7 genera (5 new) and 4 subgenera (all new) are described of a somewhat loosely delimited group called the hadzioids/weckelioids.\nPractically all species have limited ranges within Haiti, whose stream systems apparently have acquired a great deal of isolation.\nThe morphology of these amphipods makes even more indefinable the various supra-generic units proposed in the last 10 years for the \xe2\x80\x9cGammaridae s.l.\xe2\x80\x9d

Description: The distribution and ecology of centipedes in Norrland (the northern part of Sweden) are investigated. The material comprises about 1200 samples from 926 different localities, most of it collected in a special faunistic and ecological survey. Some problems in the analysis of the material of this survey are pointed out. In Norrland ten species are found outdoors and another seven species occur indoors in the area. The geographical distribution and the constancy for different habitat factors for the seven common outdoor species are shown.

Description: After a brief review of the classification and distribution of the orders of the Diplocheta: Julida, \xe2\x80\x9cCambalida\xe2\x80\x9d and Spirostreptida, the interrelationship of these groups is discussed mainly on account of the structure of the gnathochilarium and male gonopods. The conclusions are related to the distributional patterns of the groups, and a hypothesis is developed with regard to the possible dispersal of the diplochetan orders and families. It is suggested that the dispersal started in the southern hemisphere and that the northern Diplocheta reached the Holarctic by way of a pacific route, involving the former existence of a \xe2\x80\x9clost\xe2\x80\x9d continent Pacifica.
