Description: Based on a research project of the University of Tuscia and of the Alta Scuola SPI-CGIL, the volume delves into Bruno Trentin’s intellectual and political thought, from the CGIL General Secretary to his role in the European Parliament. A network of transnational relationships emerges, stretching from the USA to Europe, from Latin America to South Africa, from the Mediterranean to the Middle East. The ‘Sindacato dei Diritti’ and the European project of the CGIL are thus transferred into the socialist family, in line with Delors’ proposal of a Federation of Nation States, and into the battle of the ‘Spinelli Group’ in favour of the coordination of economic and social policies, of the European Constitution, and of a united Europe in foreign policy and defence. The volume is enriched by unpublished documents in Italian, French, English and Spanish.

Description: The book focuses on the situation of Brittany coastal fishing in the early 2000s. It addresses the question of regulated access to fishing resources. It examines the exploitation of main stocks and the characteristics of the fishing fleet. The economic efficiency of vessels is analysed, including the impact of increased fuel costs at the beginning of the decade. Fishing for pleasure is investigated through the results of a national survey which highlights the characteristics of yachtsmen enjoying this leisure activity in Brittany.

Description: Published on the occasion of Hubert Houben’s 70th birthday, this volume focuses on border crossings as one of the topics dear to the jubilarian. By starting from a concept of borders as a social construct, the authors look at selected cases of transcending spatial, cultural and legal boundaries in the Middle Ages. The resulting complexity and multi-perspectivity reflects different research methods and traditions, revealing a broad spectrum of possible approaches to the topic of border crossings.

Prendendo come punto di partenza un concetto di confine come costruzione sociale, le autrici e gli autori affrontano casi selezionati di scavalcamento di confini spaziali, culturali e legali durante il Medioevo. La complessità e la multiperspettività che ne derivano riflettono metodi e tradizioni di ricerca diversi, che insieme rivelano un ampio spettro di approcci possibili al tema dell’attraversamento dei confini.

Description: The general aim of this study is to investigate how kids and adolescents conceptualize online privacy and the concern about their online privacy through a developmental perspective, while also trying to understand its impact on a safe online surfing environment. Three studies were conducted: 1) a systematic review, which was aimed to clarify the relative strengths and weaknesses of the literature about the construct of online privacy and online privacy concerns among kids and adolescents; 2) a qualitative study, aimed to understand how adolescents define – and consequently understand – the concept of online privacy; 3) a quantitative study, which aimed at addressing whether online surfing is associated with online privacy concerns and with GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) differently across different ages during adolescence. Finally, the results of the three studies were analysed and discussed in light of the theory background. An analysis of the literature showed how children may have difficulties to fully understand risks in unusual contexts, and that they can have difficulties in responding to situations when they struggled to recognise or understand fully the risks involved. The results of the three studies are discussed, underlining how adolescents understand their online privacy, if they are concerned about their data online, how we should help them manage better their privacy online, and how we should design services, applications and devices to help kids understand better the implication of the Internet on their ‘onlife’ (Floridi, 2015).

Description: The article describes the history of higher education in Florence from the beginning of the twentieth century until the mid-1920s, when the ancient Institute of Higher Studies, founded in 1859, was transformed into a modern University. The development of the university institution is reconstructed through the detailed analysis of the annual reports presented by the superintendents of the Institute and making use of the unpublished documents preserved in the historical archives of the University. Particular attention is paid to the evolution of the number of enrolled students and graduates, as well as to the expansion of the training offer made possible by the opening of new faculties and new laboratories. Finally, the article focuses on some important professors, such as the physicist Antonio Garbasso who was also mayor of Florence, and the historian Gaetano Salvemini who was one of the leaders of the anti-fascist movement and, due to his political positions, in 1925 he was forced to leave the University to emigrate to the United States.

Description: This book addresses the question of vigilance in the face of an epidemic at the beginning of the 18th century, based on the example of the fight against the plague in the French Mediterranean. Because of its trans-Mediterranean trade, this region was particularly exposed to the risk of plague so that it sought to protect itself with concrete measures such as quarantine. ; Cet ouvrage s’intéresse au risque et à la vigilance face à la peste sur la côte méditerranéenne française dans la première moitié du 18e siècle. Entre 1720 et 1722, une terrible épidémie de peste frappe Marseille, la Provence, le Comtat-Venaissin et une partie du Languedoc, causant environ 100'000 décès. Aussi dramatique soit-elle, cette épidémie constitue une exception durant la première moitié du 18e siècle. La première partie de ce travail analyse les rapports entre vigilance, espace et communication et met en évidence une prévention qui s’exerce tant de manière transméditerranéenne que de manière interne au royaume de France. Une véritable «bureaucratie sanitaire» se met en place. La deuxième partie étudie les normes et les pratiques de la vigilance sanitaire, tant sur un plan politico-sanitaire (quarantaines des navires, des passagers et des marchandises) que sur un plan religieux (processions et prières pour endiguer la maladie). Enfin, la dernière partie se limite à la peste de 1720-1722 et illustre le passage d’une vigilance préventive à une vigilance réactive en s’intéressant aux «acteurs de la peste» et aux attitudes et tactiques développées face au fléau épidémique.

It sets out modalities for adjusting to global changes and sketches proposals for political measures to support the producers.

Description: Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Elektra constitutes an important turning point in the transition from early lyric to theatre. Inspired by Sophocles' drama, but with elements more similar to Euripides', it proposes a linguistic connotation, characterisation of the characters and a completely innovative and unconventional staging. Blood, a concrete representation of the unprecedented violence that characterises the entire drama, is the red thread that links the succession of events. Words turn into weapons and the protagonist's thirst for vengeance drives the action. The finale culminates in a supreme act of violence that sees the roles reversed: the executioners become victims and the victims executioners. This is the only solution to end the circle of brutal suffering.

Description: In academic and/or cultural debate, the word «Mediterranean» elicits mixed reactions and is revealing of normative considerations and the role of politics. This chapter explores two different perspectives that emerge from the extensive literature on this subject, and suggests a third, inspired by the contemporary trend of the debate (or rather, its absence). First, the chapter examines conceptions of the Mediterranean as a unitary entity or political actor in and of itself. The Mediterranean as a «cradle of civilization», originally described by Braudel, has been taken up more recently by Horden and Purcell, who emphasized the central role of connectivity between local communities, and by the Italian school of geo-philosophy headed by Bassano, for whom the Mediterranean is a specific value system to be respected. A second perspective emphasizes instead the Mediterranean as an area of conflict, characterized by deep fault lines. Huntington's position, captured by the expression «clash of civilizations», has been taken up and reworked by the post-colonial perspective, which sees the Mediterranean as an area characterized by permanent tensions. The chapter suggests a third option, however, noting that the word «Mediterranean» is disappearing from political vocabularies.

Description: The volume investigates the management of the “time” factor in the context of constitutional justice from the point of view of the modulation of the effects over time of the declaration of unconstitutionality and the technique of referral to the legislature. The analysis is intertwined with the study of the German experience of incompatibility decisions, which allow the German Federal Constitutional Court to declare only the incompatibility of a rule and, at the same time, to order the legislature to intervene to remove the constitutional defect. An in-depth study of this type of decision allows us to highlight some important aspects on the governance of the effects of the declaration of unconstitutionality and on the decision-making technique of unconstitutionality envisaged in Italian constitutional justice.

La vie accidentée de ces animaux trafiqués transpire nos changements écologiques actuels, incarne la disparition vertigineuse d’espèces animales et renvoie à la détérioration accélérée d’habitats naturels. Dans ce livre, on découvre des biographies animales, comme celle d’un chimpanzé cobaye (Rachel) évoluant dans un sanctuaire évangélisateur ou encore, celle d’un dauphin (Nellie) au « chômage », mis aux enchères après la faillite du parc d’attraction qui l’a vu naître et grandir. Mises en résonance, chacune de ces biographies compose un véritable bestiaire d’êtres qui pourraient sembler provenir d’histoires fictives abracadabrantesques et qui, pourtant, sont tout sauf imaginaires. Publié en français ; If a Bengal tiger anxiously splashes around in a small plastic pool in the summer and feeds on supermarket meat, is it still a tiger? By examining the troubled existence of so-called wild animals now living under overwhelmingly domestic and artificial conditions, this book raises the dual question of communication and animality. The turbulent lives of these trafficked animals reflect current ecological changes, embody the precipitous disappearance of animal species, and denote the accelerated deterioration of natural habitats. This book presents animal biographies, such as that of a former laboratory chimpanzee (Rachel) now living in an evangelizing sanctuary, or that of an “unemployed” dolphin (Nellie) put up for auction after the amusement park where it was born and raised went bankrupt. Echoing one another, these biographies make up a bestiary of beings that seem to have leapt from grotesque fiction. Yet, they are anything but imaginary. And thus the age-old question of species is raised once again, albeit in an entirely different fashion than before. Published in French.

Description: At the time of Leonardo da Vinci, numerous landfalls and transversal passages along the Arno made it easily crossable and navigable in Tuscany, from Valdichiana to the coast. In order to develop a specific knowledge of such elements, and to restore a valuable analytical tile for the recognition of the territorial heritage related to Leonardo’s hydraulic design, this chapter presents the work carried out by the authors to map ports, ships, passes and mills along the Arno river course, from Florence to Pisa, also in view of a theoretical reflection on the importance of the water system at Leonardo’s time.

Description: 1938 is the year in which racial laws were implemented in Italy. Even in areas with low Jewish presence, such as Sesto Fiorentino, the obligation to register, identify and supervise the few resident Jews was imposed. The chapters of this volume reconstruct the reflections and the consequences of this legislation. Through an investigation starting from the archives of Sesto Fiorentino, and then enriched with other sources, various aspects are explored: the census lists, the presence and surveillance of foreign Jews, the free internment, the application of the laws at school and in the Biblioteca Circolante. Unpublished material reconstructs the precepting of Jews from the Florentine area to work and on the fate of those who, after 1943, found themselves in Sesto Fiorentino.

Description: Contact with Western civilisation generated an enormous amount of translation of Western writings in Japan in the second half of the 19th century. Society and culture of modern Japan were built on this great undertaking, but discrepancies between the source and target languages can create complex entanglements. It is certainly fascinating to pay attention to the very entanglements created in the process of moving from the original language to the language of translation. From this point of view, one of the most interesting examples, the subject of this essay, is the term res publica/republic and its Japanese translation kyōwa, due to their linguistic distances and intersections.

Description: La diplomatie remplit une mission déterminante de légitimation au service du pouvoir : voilà une déclaration qui ferait sourire plus d’un de nos contemporains... L’histoire de la diplomatie entre les Pays-Bas et les États du Saint Empire témoigne de l’existence d’un discours idéologique adapté aux circonstances, principalement en temps de troubles. De volumineuses correspondances diplomatiques s’échangent au 16e siècle entre Madrid, Bruxelles et les princes territoriaux des Allemagnes, ce « triangle diplomatique » dont les fondements sont définis et les acteurs passés en revue. Les « lettres de courtoisie » visent à préserver les rapports de bon voisinage, de même que les échanges de nouvelles, d’une importance primordiale à cette époque de grande insécurité. Quant aux intercessions princières pour des sujets mécontents, autre exemple de la diplomatie au jour le jour, elles renvoient à des litiges commerciaux ou financiers susceptibles de nuire à l’entente mutuelle et d’entamer la prospérité générale.Les questions d’ordre militaire que soulève le recrutement de troupes de mercenaires sous les ordres de pensionnaires royaux figurent aussi parmi les grands leitmotiv des correspondances entre les Pays-Bas espagnols et le Saint Empire. Les interactions du Roi catholique Philippe II et de ses représentants à Bruxelles avec les princes allemands les plus influents, catholiques et protestants, sont étudiées devant la toile de fond de la confessionnalisation à l’échelle européenne. La Révolte des Pays-Bas a évidemment laissé de nombreuses traces dans les courriers diplomatiques, de la crise iconoclaste de l’été 1566 à l’échec des pourparlers de Cologne de 1579, en passant par l’exécution d’Egmont et de Hornes, les affrontements armés entre le duc d’Albe et Guillaume d’Orange ou la lutte contre les Gueux de mer. Dans ce contexte d’exception, la diplomatie sert encore davantage que dans ses formes quotidiennes les intérêts du pouvoir monarchique.

Description: From the 1920s onwards, the Soviet Union became a favourite destination for Italian writers, travellers who took it upon themselves to interpret and present the new Soviet world to Italian readers by sending articles to newspapers and magazines, most of which were later published as monographs. The present study aims to investigate the reasons that drove so many intellectuals to visit Russia and the Soviet territories after the October. Through references to historical and political ideologies that may have influenced the writers’ interpretations, the reconstruction of travel conditions and individual approaches to Soviet life, the study focuses on Italian intellectuals’ views on the USSR and the particular value that the reportages had in the construction of the image of the Soviet world in the Italian reality.

Description: This contribution intends to propose a reflection on the theatrical production of the Angolan Artur Carlos Pestana dos Santos, better known as Pepetela, an author who has always combined his literary vocation with his political commitment in the struggle for liberation from Portuguese colonialism (pepetela, meaning 'eyelash' in the Kimbundu language, originated as a militant battle name in the ranks of the MPLA). Pepetela, who has more than 20 novels and short stories to his credit, has only forayed into dramaturgy on two occasions, in the late 1970s, with the publication of A corda (written in 1976 and published in 1978) and A revolta da casa dos ídolos (written in 1979 and published in 1980). Both pièces are set in the socio-political context of the post-independence period and - both directly and allegorically, in dialogue with Brecht's epic theatre, but also with Augusto Boal's Teatro do oprimido - stage old and new conflicts between the dominators and the dominated.

Description: In the last hundred years, the progress of science in its various disciplines has been prodigious and the University of Florence, in connection with international research groups, has developed excellent research. The progress achieved has favored the creation of new university courses and technological transfer with important advantages for the city and its economy. Examples of these interactions are physics and astronomy studies with the application development of new technologies, naturalistic studies with precious natural history collections, structural and biochemical studies for the development of new drugs and vaccines, the numerous applications of mathematical sciences, statistics and information technology and the development of science for the conservation of cultural heritage.

Description: This work provides a synthesis of recent research on the evolution of agriculture and food in a capitalist system. It is based on approaches not well-known in France such as international political economy and ecological economy. It studies agricultural processing in terms of ecology, history and geopolitics and traces specific aspects of agriculture and food in the 21st century. Lastly, it proposes theoretical approaches with a view to renewing the agricultural economy.

Description: The historical phase we are living, which is characterized by change management and the continuous redefinition of skills (Fiore et al. 2021), invites the university to question itself on the central role it plays for the formation of current and future. The work of the European Commission to address the improvement and adaptation of the skills of European citizens provides clear guidelines on which Higher Education is also called to commit. Among them, this paper focuses on the development of entrepreneurial skills, i.e. the ability to act on opportunities and ideas and to transform them into value for others. The Commission calls for the development of these competences at all levels of education, giving rise to entrepreneurial education training offers (Lackéus 2015). For this reason, and in order to respond to this need, since 2013 the Italian Ministry of University has established the Contamination Labs, places of contamination between students, teachers and local stakeholders aimed at developing interdisciplinary entrepreneurial education, which is also the subject of this research.

Description: The Common Slavic *bogŭ ‘god’ displays an astonishingly rich derivation across Slavic languages, both numerically and semantically, with lexemes including almost all parts of speech: inflected (nouns, adjectives, verbs, pronouns) and not inflected (adverbs, connectives, prepositions). In this article the author pays special attention to the exclamations and other exclamation-related expressions containing this base word, as well as providing a description of the syntactic patterns from which such lexical units are generated and a brief analysis of the semantic processes (lexicalization, refunctionalization) from which they derive.

Description: This work outlines the general principles and recommendations on the raising of domestic animals applied to the Southern countries, especially tropical regions. Description: For the elderly, the right to choose where and with whom to live takes on special significance: it is related to the overcoming of ageism, of which both paternalism and a segregationist and institutionalizing approach to old age are part. Nevertheless, so far, the multilevel politics concerning active and healthy aging, the right to independent living, the ageing in place and the transition to ""new"" models of welfare have not really been able to remedy the exclusion experienced by many older people socially and in the urban context. For this reason, the elderly’s right to the (age-friendly) city is still, at least in part, not adequately guaranteed. The essays collected in this volume are the outcome of an interdisciplinary research focused primarily on the municipality of Ferrara (one of the Italian cities most affected by population aging) but have also a more general relevance. They aim at reflecting on the complex intertwining of the needs and rights of the elderly population and, in particular, on their right to lead a life of dignity and independence (also) within the urban context.

Description: The correspondence between Franco Fortini and Carlo Cassola covers a wide range of time, from 1955 to 1981 and focuses on three core themes: the journey to China in 1955 and the writing of two reportages on this topic; the events of 1965 and the literary fervour arisen around left-wing journals; Cassola’s poetic and literary production, enriched with Fortini’s critical notes. However, and the same time, the correspondence between Cassola and Fortini also shows the birth (and developments) of a complex relationship, characterized by friendship and reciprocal influence, that involves two among the most well-known figures of the twentieth century. But in the West it is not only in the Middle Ages that the images are active: this book is also devoted to the new forms of visual performances that appeared with the Renaissance or the mass-media society.

In this work, Sanfilippo summarizes and analyzes 250 years (1763–2008) of historiographical production in French and English Canada that deals with the Laurentian seigneurial regime. But the goal of the book is also to put the historians’ discourses on the seigneurial regime back into their respective political contexts. Description: Longtemps, l’aménagement du territoire a procédé d’une démarche fonctionnaliste, organisant une consommation accrue d’espace. La démarche environnementaliste se cantonnait quant à elle dans une approche défensive et naturaliste. Les citoyens s’en saisissaient parfois comme outil de défense de leur cadre de vie. Aujourd’hui, les démarches de l’aménagement du territoire et de la gestion de l’environnement ont tendance à s’intégrer, dans un contexte de développement durable. Ceci impose une démarche transversale, inscrite dans les territoires. Une attention accrue est portée, du moins dans le discours, aux acteurs, à leur participation, au développement endogène, au respect du principe de précaution. Il faut toutefois se garder de considérer ces évolutions et le développement de visions plus stratégiques de l’aménagement du territoire comme la seule expression d’un renforcement de la démocratie participative. Elles peuvent tout autant résulter de formes de désengagement de l’État, d’exacerbation des concurrences entre villes et régions dans un contexte néo-libéral, d’une réduction des solidarités inter-régionales. Les attitudes des pouvoirs publics, jusqu’au niveau européen, sont parfois contradictoires, partagées entre un intérêt accru porté aux considérations environnementales et des logiques dominantes de marché et de concurrence. On comprendra que tenter d’aborder un champ aussi large impliquait une réflexion collective. Le présent ouvrage ébauche cette mise en œuvre en la matière au sein et autour de l’Institut de gestion de l’environnement et d’aménagement du territoire (IGEAT) de l’Université libre de Bruxelles.

Their initiatives were supported by Hucpoldings, an illustrious kindred group born in Florence in the mid of the 9th century and spreaded over the Kingdom of Italy. Yet at that time some members of the group were still keeping important interests in the city and in its comitatus. Particularly, the aristocratic kinship known as Adimari had created a strong backing link with the florentine bishopric about the year one thousand. Inspired by their forefathers’ political and cultural heritage, they alternately adapted carolingian patterns of social interaction to contemporary times and needs. In that way they perpetuated their lay leadership over the half of the century.

Description: L’alimentation est à la fois un levier central pour engager la transition socio-écologique et un theme quotidien tangible pour chaque citoyen.ne. En Allemagne comme en France, quelques collectivités territoriales engagent des mesures innovantes pour promouvoir une alimentation locale et durable. Le Forum pour l’avenir franco-allemand s’est penché sur les expériences de certaines de ces collectivités et a facilité le dialogue entre elles durant plusieurs mois afin de comprendre quelles politiques nationales peuvent soutenir de telles initiatives locales. En associant des expert.e.s issus de la sphère scientifique, de l’administration et de la société civile, il a recommandé de « Donner la priorité au développement de systèmes alimentaires locaux et durables » avec cinq propositions d’action concrètes aux gouvernements français et allemand. Cette étude présente les initiatives françaises et allemandes ayant nourri les propositions d’action du Forum pour l’avenir.

Description: Food and food policy is central to social-ecological transformation. It is also an everyday issue that is easy to communicate to citizens. Municipalities in Germany and France have recognized the potential of innovative local food policies and have developed and tested innovative approaches to transforming local food systems. However, they are encountering structural barriers that cannot be overcome at the municipal level. The Franco-German Forum for the Future has researched the opportunities and obstacles of local nutritional change and brought engaged municipalities from both countries into exchange with each other. Together with experts from academia, public administrations and civil society, it has developed the seven recommendations for the national governments, one of which concerns "Prioritizing the development of local and sustainable food systems" with five proposals for action. This study is intended as a background paper to the Recommendation. With recourse to the concrete example of Mouans-Sartoux and other municipalities in France and Germany, it describes the potentials of a sustainable municipal food policy and provides – from concrete local practice – the background knowledge for each of the five proposals for action.

Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

Comprendre les stratégies et les processus d'invention et de transfert d’une terminologie spécifique à l’expression esthétique devient alors un enjeu important. Les mots, en effet, ne sont pas interchangeables. En se succédant ou se superposant, même s'ils sont contradictoires, les différents sens donnent épaisseur et subtilité au concept. Le voyage d'une notion dans le temps et dans l'espace contribue alors aussi à un élargissement de notre compréhension d'une histoire culturelle entre universalité et identité au sein de la diversité artistique qui caractérise de l'Europe moderne.

Description: Leonardo’s interest in Vitruvian machinatio, subservient to the needs of military architecture, starts with the return of the Sienese tradition involving mechanisms used both in civil and military fields. Whilst Martini’s influence on his military studies is partly known, very little is as yet known about the extent to which they were influenced by direct observation of fortified cities. This study analyses some drawings in which the Master achieves a perfect synthesis of art and science, harmonizing together the natural features of a territory and the technical aspects necessary to forge military strategies.

Description: À la suite de la fermeture de ses mines dans les années 1980, Loos-en-Gohelle, ancien haut lieu minier du nord de la France, est devenu un modèle de commune écologique. L’action culturelle et son importance singulière dans la transformation dite « du noir au vert » demeurent encore peu connues. À l’échelle du Bassin minier des Hauts-de-France, la sortie du charbon a été accompagnée par une politique d’équipement et d’investissement culturel visant à faire évoluer l’image extérieure de ce territoire. Cette étude met en évidence la singularité de l’approche loossoise, dont l’ambition est d’abord d’impliquer ses propres habitant.e.s à la transition écologique et sociale du territoire. Ce travail culturel participatif est ainsi devenu un outil d’émancipation. Toutefois, au cours des dernières années, les possibilités de mobilisation de la population semblent être à un tournant. Loos-en-Gohelle fait face au défi de construire de nouvelles formes de participation culturelle afin d’éviter l’essoufflement de son dynamisme.

Description: Following the end of coal production in 1986, the small town of Loos-en-Gohelle in northern France transformed itself from a former mining stronghold into a model municipality for sustainability. This article highlights the importance of cultural policy measures in this structural change: while in other municipalities in the northern French coalfield, cultural policy was used to change the image of the region, Loos-en-Gohelle aimed to involve the local population in the socio-ecological transformation process. Participatory cultural work thus became an instrument of emancipation. However, the possibilities for mobilising the population appear to have reached a turning point in recent years. Loos-en-Gohelle is faced with the challenge of developing new forms of cultural participation in order to prevent the momentum from slowing down.

Description: This volume explores the issues of using e-learning in university and of developing and using a “blended learning” teaching method for the course of Computer Science from the first year of the the Medicine and Surgery Degree of the University of Florence. This course was used as a trial for the peer-review teaching method, which can be useful in classes with a high number of students; this publication also includes a selection of the best works produced by the students. The results of the trial prove the advantages of using the peer-review teaching method for other university courses, and the students' works on e-health give current medical practitioners insights on how to use ICT in their practice with skill and care.

Description: L’agriculture est-elle toujours une affaire de famille ? Cet ouvrage analyse les transformations du caractère familial de l’agriculture en France, mises en perspective avec quelques éclairages de situations dans les pays du Sud. La première partie de l’ouvrage rend compte des recompositions de l’exploitation agricole et de ses enjeux, exploitation qui est de moins en moins familiale, tout en le restant. Elle propose des cadres d’analyse élargis pour les appréhender. Les transformations des formes familiales d’agriculture sont abordées dans une deuxième partie par l’étude des mutations qui s’opèrent dans le travail en agriculture. Ces mutations amènent à questionner le sens du travail et les interfaces avec le vivre en famille et les activités non-agricoles, au-delà des seules problématiques d’organisation et de performances technico-économiques. La troisième partie de l’ouvrage montre que les cadres structurant l’activité agricole dépassent le champ de la famille et se renouvellent, en particulier dans les formes d’insertion territoriale, dans les modalités des processus d’innovation et par des reconfigurations de l’action collective de proximité. Finalement, les transformations du caractère familial, saisies dans le temps long des trajectoires d’exploitations, sont aussi observées dans les formes et stratégies de pérennisation et de transmission, qu’il s’agisse de transmettre un statut, une activité, une entreprise, un patrimoine, un outil de production ou encore des savoir-faire. Une synthèse conclusive propose un renouvellement des questions de recherche et plaide pour un décloisonnement des études en agriculture. Description: Markov chains represent a classical topic of probability theory that has a large number of applications in different areas, including mathematics, computer science, physics, biology, natural science, economics and several others. Typical examples of Markovian models concern for instance the analysis and interpretation of DNA sequences, voice recognition and the design of procedures for analysis and browsing of the web. In computer science and in particular in the algorithmic area Markov chains have been used to introduce the so-called Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, which allow us to design probabilistic approximation algorithms for solving NP-hard problems. This work presents Markov chains and their algorithmic applications in a mathematical style, with a didactic spirit. It mainly has educational purposes, and it is specifically designed for teaching these topics in Italian university courses at a master level.

Esempi tipici di modelli markoviani riguardano l'analisi e l’interpretazione di sequenze di DNA, il riconoscimento di segnali vocali, il disegno di procedure di esplorazione e analisi della rete web. In un ambito informatico e soprattutto algoritmico le catene di Markov hanno dato origine ai cosiddetti metodi Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), che consentono di definire algoritmi probabilistici di approssimazione per problemi difficili dal punto di vista computazionale. Description: In various places in Wallonia, the alteration of the ecological integrity of our rivers has led, in the past, to the rarefaction of certain fish species, in particular ecologically sensitive heritage species such as rheophilic cyprinids. Although the physico-chemical and hydromorphological quality of the habitat has now improved, or is in the process of returning to a satisfactory level in many rivers, the natural recolonization of fish is sometimes slow and restoration or support stocking is necessary to accelerate this process or facilitate it in the most isolated sectors. The production of juveniles for restocking requires the mastery of all the rearing phases: reproduction of broodstock, larval rearing, grow-out of juveniles to marketable size, as well as the growth and sexual maturation of captive fish constituting new breeding stocks. After a description of the biology of the hotu, this book addresses the different stages of production, and considers the growth of larvae and juveniles under various rearing conditions and levels of intensification. Description: The forests of the Congo Basin are the second largest tropical forest in the world. For a long time, conflicts of use have been numerous. In order to preserve its ecosystem services, the exploitation of these forests should integrate the principles of sustainable management. Information, education, training and outreach work is therefore necessary within Congolese society. University cooperation is an appropriate way to meet this need for training for all actors concerned with the resources present in the forests of Tshopo (former Province Orientale). A targeted inter-university project financed by ARES (formerly CUD) entitled "Support for the organization of a master's degree in forest management to strengthen the capacities of Congolese researchers with a view to the socio-economic recovery of the Democratic Republic of Congo - AFORCO" provided for two main activities: postgraduate training and the production of doctoral theses in disciplines relevant to forest management. The capacities of 16 experts were strengthened through a DES in sustainable forest management at the University of Kisangani (2009-2011); in December 2015, two PhD theses were presented and defended at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech in the fields of wood biology and landscape ecology. This book provides a review of the studies carried out thanks to the AFORCO project and related projects, mainly in the form of final works and PhD theses on the forest ecosystems of the Tshopo. This book is primarily intended for researchers concerned with the challenges of sustainable development in developing countries characterized by the presence of still abundant natural resources. The studies presented highlight the added value of academic cooperation, the need for long-term scientific collaborations and the potential synergies of North-South academic exchanges. / Les forêts du bassin du Congo constituent le deuxième plus grand massif de forêts tropicales au monde. Depuis longtemps, les conflits d’usages y ont été nombreux. Afin de préserver ses services écosystémiques, l’exploitation de ces forêts devrait intégrer les principes de l’aménagement durable. Un travail d’information, d’éducation, de formation et de vulgarisation s’impose donc au sein de la société congolaise. La coopération universitaire constitue un moyen approprié de répondre à ce besoin de formations au profit de tous les acteurs concernés par les ressources présentes au sein des forêts de la Tshopo (ex Province orientale). These dynamics are studied in systems designed to be monitored over the long term, known as plots and trails. This book fills this gap by capitalizing on the experience accumulated over more than 20 years by the members of the DYNAFAC collective, a group created on the initiative of ATIBT, CIRAD, Nature+ and Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech. It is a practical and illustrated guide explaining the process necessary for the installation and monitoring of these trails. In addition to the technical procedures, the guide also assesses the costs, taking into account the economic specificities of different countries in the sub-region. By addressing all stakeholders in the development and management of Africa's forests, the book aims to promote the implementation of robust and efficient systems within everyone's reach. / La durabilité de l'aménagement des forêts naturelles d'Afrique centrale est tributaire d'une connaissance approfondie de la dynamique démographique des populations d'arbres commerciaux. Cette dynamique est étudiée dans des dispositifs destinés à être suivis sur le long terme, dénommés parcelles et sentiers. Si la démarche méthodologique d'installation et de suivi des parcelles est assez bien documentée, celle des sentiers l'est moins. Le présent ouvrage vient combler ce vide en capitalisant l'expérience accumulée depuis plus de 20 ans par les membres du collectif DYNAFAC, un collectif créé à l'initiative de l'ATIBT, du CIRAD, de Nature+ et de Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech. Its dissemination has been accompanied by a significant increase in the performance of production systems in savannah areas and, following the redistribution of income that it has allowed in the rural world, a notable improvement in the living conditions of the populations concerned. This undeniable success in the fight against poverty in sub-Saharan Africa is now threatened by the downward trend in world cotton fiber prices, largely caused by the subsidies granted to cotton producers in the North and by the increase in production and transportation costs, mainly linked to the continuing rise in energy prices. The search for fair, efficient and sustainable solutions to the deep crisis currently facing the African cotton industry is an issue to which our institution is particularly sensitive. Not only because of our natural interest in everything related to rural development in Africa, but also because of the long history that links Gembloux to cotton growing and the expertise acquired over the last few years by the Economics and Rural Development Unit of our institution in analyzing the functioning of the African cotton sectors.
