    Description: Neben der Biblia pauperum ist das Speculum humanae salvationis das wohl bekannteste typologische Werk des Mittelalters. Vom lateinischen Text sind 328 handschriftliche mittelalterliche Quellen überliefert. Von seiner Popularität zeugen überdies Übersetzungen ins Deutsche, Französische, Niederländische, Englische und Tschechische. Diese Arbeit stellt eine der beiden niederländischen Fassungen des Speculum, und zwar die Prosaübersetzung aus dem Jahre 1464, in den Mittelpunkt. Neben Struktur und Funktion des lateinischen Textes werden in einem chronologisch-thematisch organisierten status quaestionis die Accessusfragen nach Herkunft und Autorschaft des Speculum erörtert. Vom mittelniederländischen Prosa-Spieghel werden eine genaue kodikologische Beschreibung und eine breit angelegte Analyse der Sprache geboten. Auch der literaturhistorische Kontext und die Übersetzungs- und Bearbeitungstechnik werden eingehen behandelt. Die kritische Edition nach der Haarlemer Handschrift erfüllt ein altes Forschungsdesiderat, indem sie sowohl den Vergleich mit der bereits vor mehr als einem halben Jahrhundert herausgegebenen Versübertragung ermöglicht, als auch eine eminent wichtige Schnittstelle zwischen handschriftlicher und gedruckter Tradition in den Niederlanden für die Forschung zugänglich macht.

    Description: The monograph by Grzegorz Grochowski documents insightful reflection on the current state of the field of the genre order of discourse, especially literary taxonomies. These orders are seen from the perspective of various methodological orders of the last few decades, developed in the area of postmodern literary studies. The conclusions emerging from these are examined from the angle of analytical utility of selected solutions. The study is successful at depicting the current state of the debates on the theory of literature and the dynamics of phenomena observed in the field of contemporary literature. It combines an in-depth theoretical analysis with sophisticated interpretations of the texts. Therefore, it skilfully transports theoretical discussions on to a concrete level. It also demonstrates that literature has a meaning not only against the backdrop of language and genological norm, that its dynamics require a return into the chaos of social life (rejected by structuralism). Ausgehend von der langen Prosa fragt Barbara Bausch nach möglichen Formen literarischer Referenzialität. Dabei konturiert sie Ror Wolfs experimentelle und zugleich engagierte Poetik des ästhetisch produktiven Störens als Kreuzungspunkt verschiedenster Suchbewegungen des Prosaschreibens in den 1950er bis 1980er Jahren.

    Description: At the end of the 1970s, a new genre cycle was formed in US cinema. Starting with space opera in cinema, for which George Lucas' Star Wars is paradigmatic, fantasy established itself for the first time as an independent cinematic genre in distinction from fairy tales and fantastic fiction. The enthusiasm for pen & paper role-playing games and the continuing J. R. R. Tolkien craze culminated in the following years in a series of films that absorbed, pushed and further developed the diversity of modern film technology and production: the spectrum of films ranged from live-action films (Conan the Barbarian) to puppet animation (The Dark Crystal) to animated films (The Last Unicorn), in which George Lucas as well as Jim Henson and the production companies behind them at the time played leading roles. Contemporary critics had written these films off as conservative, sometimes even reactionary genre plays. In contrast, this essay unfolds a (historical) poetics of the US fantasy film. With its film-analytical case studies, the volume shows how the films of the years 1977 to 1987 are embedded in a specific film culture and how the genre cycle as part of the Hollywood system prepared and significantly influenced the triumph of blockbuster cinema in the 1990s.

But what is it when we talk about Macedonia? The media representation of the region often remains diffuse and is strongly influenced by stereotypes. In his comprehensive analysis, Benjamin Langer shows for the first time how this south-eastern European region was shaped in German-language texts from a terra incognita on the periphery of Europe and provided with attributions. Dieser Band enthält die Beiträge des Kongresses und geht der Frage nach, weshalb derSimplicissimus als einziger deutschsprachiger Roman der frühen Neuzeit bis auf den heutigen Tag in hohem kanonischen Ansehen steht, was den Roman, wie sein Autor es wünschte, «aufhebens Werth» gemacht hat. Die Referenten untersuchen die Bedeutung des Simplicissimus anhand von Vergleichen mit der europäischen Romantradition. Dabei geht es weniger um Quellenfragen als um Fragen der Qualität: um Grimmelshausens Anteil an der Herausbildung einer modernen Romanpoetologie, um seinen unkonventionellen Umgang mit den Konstruktionsprinzipien des hohen und niederen Romans, mit der realistisch-satirischen Erzähltradition und den Formproblemen des autobiographischen Erzählens sowie um seine Kunstgriffe bei der Einformung unterschiedlichster Materien.     Description: Die Arbeit widmet sich dem Zusammenhang zwischen den Phänomenen Gewalt und Dissoziation, der in der Lyrik nach 1989 vermehrt reflektiert wird. Den Gegenstand der Untersuchung bilden russisch- und deutschsprachige Gedichte, die in vier thematischen Konstellationen einander gegenübergestellt werden.     Description: From March 16-19, 2016, the Young Romance Studies Forum on "Center and Periphery" took place at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg. In this volume, the dialectical concepts of center and periphery are examined from the perspectives of literary, linguistic, and cultural studies. Their relevance in Romania is examined in the individual contributions on the basis of geographical, spatial, historical, social, and linguistic aspects, in order to include different approaches and methods of analysis. In addition to a heterogeneous approach to the dimensions of the conceptual pair, the volume offers a structured presentation of the individual phenomena studied. The two thematic blocks focus, on the one hand, on diverse literary studies considerations of the dichotomy of the conceptual pair, and, on the other hand, on linguistic conceptions of center and periphery. Thus, new perspectives on both central and peripheral phenomena in Romance studies are opened up, on the one hand by presenting the range of (traditional) centers and peripheries, and on the other hand by referring to current discussions in the context of the two concepts.

    Description: Dreams within dreams remind us of the treacherous nature of reality. This first comparative study on the subject reveals the diversity of dream-within-a-dream structures. Works of literature, film, TV series and comics from different cultures are analysed in close readings, uncovering their often complex and ambiguous shape. They are also placed in a broader cultural history of the dream. Der Traum im Traum kann Potenzierung des Traums sein oder in Abgründe falschen Erwachens führen. Diese erste komparatistische Monografie zu der Thematik zeigt nicht nur das Spektrum der Formen, sondern auch ihre Anbindung an grundlegende Fragen nach der Zuverlässigkeit der Wahrnehmung und der Realität der Welt. Im Rahmen der vergleichenden Untersuchung von Werken aus Literatur, Film, Fernsehserie und Comic aus diversen kulturellen Kontexten zeigt sich der Traum im Traum in all seinen Gestalten.     Description: Die anhaltende Präsenz von Engeln in der Moderne wurde oft auf ein gesteigertes Trostbedürfnis zurückgeführt. Die Engelsfigur ist aber nicht bloß statisches Überbleibsel einer verlorenen Glaubensgewissheit. Vielmehr steht sie in einer produktiven Beziehung zu zentralen geschichtsphilosophischen, politischen und medienästhetischen Fragen der Zeit. Die vorliegende Studie geht den Zusammenhängen zwischen Engelsfigur und Moderne-Diskurs entlang eines Spannungsbogens nach, der von Reflexionen eines metaphysischen Exils Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts über die Zuspitzung existentieller Bedrohung im Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zum Undarstellbarkeitstopos des Holocaust verläuft. Dabei wird deutlich, dass der Engel auf vielfache Weise als Verursacher und gleichzeitig als zukunftsgerichteter Überwinder moderner Formen des Exils auftritt – als Figur, die geschichtsphilosophische Brüche herbeiführt und individualbiographische Traumata sichtbar macht; die die moderne Deformation des Menschen illustriert und wahlweise zu heilen oder voranzutreiben versucht; und die schließlich neue politische Ordnungen entwirft und sie als ästhetische Metalepse bereits in der Exilgegenwart veranschaulicht.

Unterricht stattfinden. 2012 wurde deshalb das Netzwerk-Projekt Landeskunde Nord ins Leben gerufen, dessen Ziel es ist, Forschung und Lehre zur germanistischen Landeskunde, insbesondere in den nordischen Ländern, voranzutreiben. Pädagogische Konzepte, die über die fragwürdige Vermittlung von Daten und angeblich typischen Eigenschaften und Verhaltensweisen der Deutschen, Österreicher und Schweizer hinausgehen, sind rar. Diesem Defizit will der Band in seiner Verbindung von wissenschaftstheoretischer Fundierung und praktischen Beispielen abhelfen. Bei aller Vielfalt der Ansätze zeigen sich auch zahlreiche Gemeinsamkeiten, beispielsweise im Hinblick auf die Ablehnung eines homogenen Kulturbegriffs. Die Beiträge gehen nicht von schematischen Darstellungen mit universalem Anspruch aus, sondern von Phänomenen und Diskursen, wobei die Autorinnen und Autoren auf autonomes und lebenslanges Lernen setzen.

    Description: Aberrations of Reason. Capitalist Rationality and its Critique in Juha Seppälä’s Novels Yhtiökumppanit (The Partners, 2002), Paholaisen haarukka (Devil’s Fork, 2008) and Mr. Smith (2012). Juha Seppälä’s early literary works, published in the 1980s and in the early 1990s, usually described spiritually lonely men who suffered from an existential loss of meaning and serious alienation problems in the modern world. After this, Seppälä turned to deal with the transformation of the Finnish way of life and its cultural base, until after the turn of the new millennium he began to critically judge society’s ongoing marketization process. This study analyses his capitalism-critical works, particularly his novels Yhtiökumppanit (The Partners, 2002), Paholaisen haarukka (Devil’s Fork, 2008) and Mr. Smith (2012). These works do not, primarily, consider contemporary market capitalism from a class perspective, although this sort of perspective is also included in them. They are, above all, critical of market capitalist rationality. According to Seppälä, the basic problem of modern economic profit-seeking lies in the fact that in its unchecked form it is largely indifferent with respect to existential, moral, social and ecological values and principles. Free market economy or market capitalism has, therefore, a destructive influence on individuals, communities and ecological systems. The novels at issue emphasize that due to this it is also, in a deeper sense, incapable of producing existentially meaningful ways of life.

Dieses Buch behandelt zwei sachlich entgegengesetzte, aber dennoch verwandte metaleptische Bilder des Erzählens: Im einen erscheint der Erzähler als anwesender Beobachter ("wir finden unseren Helden in x"), im anderen als unmittelbarer Urheber der Handlung ("wir haben unseren Helden nach x gebracht"). Beide Bilder werden anhand aussagekräftiger Beispiele von den Anfängen in der frühgriechischen Dichtung über Verwendungen in Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit bis zu Weiterentwicklungen im modernen Roman verfolgt. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei den impliziten Konzepten des Erzählens, die in den jeweiligen Verwendungen greifbar werden.     Description: After the opening of the country in the middle of the 19th century, Japan quickly moved towards becoming an industrialized world power. But the romanticist syndrome, imported from Europe by Mori Ogai since the 1890s, especially enchanted young intellectuals and drove their search of a Japanese cultural identity. The goal was, internally, to integrate the entire population, and externally, to make the country distinguishable from the »West« ─ paradoxically, in a spirit of European Romanticism. Takemitsu Morikawa investigates these remarkable developments and retraces the rise and canonization of the alleged self-image of modern Japan.
    Description: Seit der Öffnung des Landes in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bewegte sich Japan rasant auf dem Weg zur industrialisierten Weltmacht. Das dort seit den 1890er Jahren durch Mori Ogai aus Europa ‘eingeführte’ romantische Syndrom jedoch verzauberte insbesondere die jungen Intellektuellen und trieb sie zur Suche nach der japanischen kulturellen Identität an. Ziel war es, nach innen die gesamte Bevölkerung zu integrieren und nach außen das Land vom »Westen« unterscheidbar zu machen ─ und zwar paradoxerweise im Geist der europäischen Romantik. Takemitsu Morikawa geht diesen bemerkenswerten Entwicklungen auf den Grund und zeichnet die Entstehung und die Kanonisierung des vermeintlichen Selbstbildes des modernen Japan nach.

    Description: The book addresses the problem of the influence of copyright law on modern modes of functioning and understanding of literature. This problem is situated in a context of Law and Literature studies and in particular within the cultural studies of copyright, which are summarised in chapter one. The history of copyright law and related literary discussions is recapitulated in chapter two. In the next chapters, the analysis is focused on literary discussions in which copyright law is a directly posed problem, or it is indicated only as context. Particular attention is paid to: philological genealogical research (and texts by Wacław Borowy and John Livingstone Lowes); discussion surrounding T.S. Eliot’s poem ‘The Waste Land’; the debate provoked by Karol Irzykowski’s article ‘Plagiatowy charakter przełomów literackich w Polsce’ [‘The Plagiarising Character of Literary Breakthroughs in Poland’]; analysis of copyright law in the writings of Jacques Derrida and in the novel Muza dalekich podróży [The Muse of Long-Distance Travels] by Teodor Parnicki; finally, anthologies Future of Copyright published at the beginning of the twenty-first century in Poland. In the last chapter, the analysed problems are situated in the context of the debate on the commodification of literature in capitalist societies.
