    Description: QUIKVIS computes the times during an Earth orbit when geometric requirements are satisfied for observing celestial objects. The observed objects may be fixed (stars, etc.) or moving (sun, moon, planets). QUIKVIS is useful for preflight analysis by those needing information on the availability of celestial objects to be observed. Two types of analyses are performed by QUIKVIS. One is used when specific objects are known, the other when targets are unknown and potentially useful regions of the sky must be identified. The results are useful in selecting candidate targets, examining the effects of observation requirements, and doing gross assessments of the effects of the orbit's right ascension of the ascending node (RAAN). The results are not appropriate when high accuracy is needed (e.g. for scheduling actual mission operations). The observation duration is calculated as a function of date, orbit node, and geometric requirements. The orbit right ascension of the ascending node can be varied to account for the effects of an uncertain launch time of day. The orbit semimajor axis and inclination are constant throughout the run. A circular orbit is assumed, but a simple program modification will allow eccentric orbits. The geometric requirements that can be processed are: 1) minimum separation angle between the line of sight to the object and the earth's horizon; 2) minimum separation angle between the line of sight to the object and the spacecraft velocity vector; 3) maximum separation angle between the line of sight to the object and the zenith direction; and 4) presence of the spacecraft in the earth's shadow. The user must supply a date or date range, the spacecraft orbit and inclination, up to 700 observation targets, and any geometric requirements to be met. The primary output is the time per orbit that conditions are satisfied, with options for sky survey maps, time since a user-specified orbit event, and bar graphs illustrating overlapping requirements. The output is printed in visually convenient lineprinter form but is also available on data files for use by postprocessors such as external XY plotters. QUIKVIS is written in FORTRAN 77 for batch or interactive execution and has been implemented on a DEC VAX 11/780 operating under VMS with a central memory requirement of approximately 500K of 8 bit bytes. QUIKVIS was developed in 1986 and revised in 1987.

    Description: Anthropogenic aerosols are intricately linked to the climate system and to the hydrologic cycle. The net effect of aerosols is to cool the climate system by reflecting sunlight. Depending on their composition, aerosols can also absorb sunlight in the atmosphere, further cooling the surface but warming the atmosphere in the process. These effects of aerosols on the temperature profile, along with the role of aerosols as cloud condensation nuclei, impact the hydrologic cycle, through changes in cloud cover, cloud properties and precipitation. Unravelling these feedbacks is particularly difficult because aerosols take a multitude of shapes and forms, ranging from desert dust to urban pollution, and because aerosol concentrations vary strongly over time and space. To accurately study aerosol distribution and composition therefore requires continuous observations from satellites, networks of ground-based instruments and dedicated field experiments. Increases in aerosol concentration and changes in their composition, driven by industrialization and an expanding population, may adversely affect the Earth's climate and water supply.

    Description: A laser spectrometer based on difference-frequency generation in periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) has been used to quantify atmospheric formaldehyde with a detection limit of 0.32 parts per billion in a given volume (ppbV) using specifically developed data-processing techniques. With state-of-the-art fiber-coupled diode-laser pump sources at 1083 nm and 1561 nm, difference-frequency radiation has been generated in the 3.53-micrometers (2832-cm-1) spectral region. Formaldehyde in ambient air in the 1- to 10-ppb V range has been detected continuously for nine and five days at two separate field sites in the Greater Houston area operated by the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC) and the Houston Regional Monitoring Corporation (HRM). The acquired spectroscopic data are compared with results obtained by a well-established wet-chemical o-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl) hydroxylamine (PFBHA) technique.

    Description: Pulsed thermoelectrically cooled QC-DFB lasers operating at 15.6 micrometers were characterized for spectroscopic gas sensing applications. A new method for wavelength scanning based on repetition rate modulation was developed. A non-wavelength-selective pyroelectric detector was incorporated in the sensor configuration giving the advantage of room-temperature operation and low cost. Absorption lines of CO2 and H2O were observed in ambient air, providing information about the concentration of these species.

    Description: Antenna temperatures and the corresponding geolocation data from the five sources of the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program F11 satellite have been characterized. Data from the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) have been compared with data from other sources to define and document the differences resulting from different processing systems. While all sources used similar methods to calculate antenna temperatures, different calibration averaging techniques and other processing methods yielded temperature differences. Analyses of the geolocation data identified perturbations in the FNMOC and National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service data. The effects of the temperature differences were examined by generating rain rates using the Goddard Scattering Algorithm. Differences in the geophysical precipitation products are directly attributable to antenna temperature differences.

    Description: The recent discovery of an object bound to the sun by gravity but situated beyond the orbit of Pluto is discussed. The discovery of this object, designated 1992 QB1, may confirm the existence of the Kuiper belt, envisioned to be a disk of far-flung comets left over from the origin of the solar system. The implications of the new discovery for the future search for distant comets beyond Pluto are examined.

    Description: Narrow-angle astrometry has many astrophysical applications, from the measurement of parallaxes to the search for planets around nearby stars. Ground-based long-focus telescopes with photoelectric detectors have achieved accuracies of about 2-3 milliarcsec in 1 h. This accuracy is limited primarily by the atmosphere, and is consistent with models of atmospheric turbulence. However, applying these turbulence models to observations with long-baseline interferometers yields astrometric errors that are far smaller than can be achieved with long-focus telescopes. The predictions for the ultimate accuracy of ground-based narrow-angle astrometry using long-baseline IR (2.2 micron) stellar interferometers are very promising. With the excellent seeing at a high altitude site like Mauna Kea, the atmospheric limit for a 1 h astrometric measurement is expected to be of the order of 10 microarcsec for 1 h of integration. This two-order-of-magnitude improvement over conventional measurements is due to two effects. One is that a long-baseline IR interferometer can find useful reference stars very near an arbitrary target star, so that the atmospherically-induced motions of both stars are highly correlated. The second is that the baseline length can be much larger than the separation of the stellar beams in the turbulent atmosphere, resulting in a reduction in astrometric error with increasing baseline length.

    Description: Prospects for lunar-based astronomy and the development of the required technologies are briefly reviewed. A systematic approach to lunar-based astronomy includes a progression in capability from small automated telescopes to the 16-meter reflector on the moon. A next step beyond the 16-meter reflector will be a Lunar Optical/Ultraviolet/Infrared Synthesis Array. Intermediate steps are represented by the Lunar Transit Telescope and the Lunar Cluster Telescope Experiment. Priorities for the required technology development are identified.

    Description: The Lunar Telescope Working Group of the Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA, has conducted conceptual studies of an evolutionary family of UV/ optical/IR telescopes to be based on the lunar surface. Included are: (1) the 16-m aperture Large Lunar Telescope; (2) the 4-m aperture precursor Lunar Cluster Telescope Experiment; and (3) the 2-m Lunar Transit Telescope proposed by John McGraw of the Steward Observatory. Development and emplacement of these advanced astronomical facilities would parallel the buildup of an initial lunar exploration site, an early lunar outpost, and a permanent lunar base. The Working Group has examined the feasibility of constructing such telescopes and assessed technology, subsystem, system, transportation, and operations requirements for their development and emplacement. Influences of the lunar environment and site selection on telescope design and operation were also evaluated.

    Description: A minute displacement of the radio source in Algol was measured by VLBI during two consecutive orbital revolutions of the close binary. The magnitude of the displacement unambiguously indicates that the less massive star of the close binary, a K subgiant, is the star responsible for the nonthermal radio emission of the system. This is consistent with the idea that the radio emission in Algol is related to the strong magnetic activity of the subgiant. The orientation and sense of the displacement on the sky that are directly deduced from our astrometric VLBI observations imply: (1) that the orbital plane of the close binary is at P.A. = +52 deg +/- 5 deg; and (2) that the sense of circulation of the close binary is clockwise, as seen on the sky. Thus, the long-period and close binary orbital motions are almost orthogonal and counterrevolving and this is relevant for evolution and dynamical studies.

    Description: The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) detects any gamma-ray burst not obscured by the earth and intense enough to produce a sufficiently strong signal in at least two of its eight large area NaI detectors (LADs). For a given intensity, a LAD records a stronger signal from a source which directly faces it than from a source to its side. Thus, BATSE's detection of a gamma-ray burst may depend upon the burst's direction. We discuss the effect of this uneven exposure to the sky on the instrument's measurement of the distribution of gamma-ray burst directions and intensities, and we describe our method of accounting for the effect.

    Description: The goal of the Germanium GAlactic Plane Patrol mission (GGAPP) is to provide a continuous monitor of the Galactic Plane (GP) for variable sources of gamma-ray lines. Potentially interesting sources include black hole candidates, X-ray binary systems, pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, and solar flares. The GGAPP instrument is an array of Ge detectors cooled by a mechanical refrigerator to achieve a spectral resolution of 2 keV at 1 MeV (1/500). A bismuth germanate (BGO) shield will restrict the field-of-view (FOV) to within 20 deg of the GP, and a modulation collimator system will locate strong sources to less than 0.3 deg in galactic longitude, provide a direct means of subtracting background, and mapping the diffuse emission from the GP. The spacecraft will be rotationally stabilized with the spin axis perpendicular to the GP such that the modulator scans in galactic longitude. A HEO or L1 orbit will keep GGAPP far away from the strong background produced by the Earth. GGAPP will provide a natural bridge between GRO and future missions such as INTEGRAL/NAE.

    Description: The effect of varying BATSE trigger parameters on the modeled BATSE detection rate is investigated numerically. Quantitative estimates are obtained of the systematic effects generated by the complex interplay of trigger times, variations in the signal-to-noise ratio for burst detection as well as the time scale over which backgrounds are determined, and the number of required detections above threshold. It is found, in particular that employing a third detection, at a reduced signal-to-noise ratio, to resolve a burst does not increase the detection rate. It is also shown that the BATSE detection rate is insensitive to variations in the time scale over which the background is determined.

    Description: The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) consists of eight anisotropic gamma-ray spectrometers at the corners of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. BATSE monitors the full sky from a fixed orientation and determines the direction of gamma-ray bursts with an accuracy appropriate for studying the bursts' celestial distribution. We describe the calculation of gamma-ray burst directions from measurements made by BATSE. We present a sample of calculated directions from BATSE's measurement of solar flaxes and compare the calculated directions with the solar direction. We describe the systematic errors apparent in these data and discuss ongoing efforts to correct them.

    Description: This status report presents some details on the project 'Search for time-correlated optical counterparts of gamma-ray bursters'. The photographic sky patrol of the three observatories Sonneberg (FRG), Ondrejov (CSFR), and Odessa (USSR) is used to look for patrol plates which have been exposed simultaneously with a gamma-ray burst detected by GRO. Our expectations and the very first results are presented.

    Description: We have developed seven compact soft X-ray/EUV (XUV) multilayer coated and two compact FUV interference film coated Cassegrain and Ritchey-Chretien telescopes for a rocket borne observatory, the Multi-Spectral Solar Telescope Array.     Description: A major component of the Advanced Solar Observatory is the High Resolution Telescope Cluster (HRTC) for investigations of the solar atmosphere at soft X-ray, XUV, EUV, and VUV wavelengths, via high resolution spectroheliograms in lines and continuum emitted over the full, (4500 to 100,000,000 K) range of temperatures of the outer solar atmosphere; angular resolution may be as high as 0.03 arcsec. An analysis is conducted of a model HRTC instrument complement encompassing a 60-90 cm aperture VUV telescope, a 40-50 cm aperture EUV telescope, three 40-50 cm aperture XUV telescopes, and a 40-cm aperture soft X-ray telescope, as well as flare spectrometers and polarimeters and four coronagraph/spectrographs.

    Description: The Solar/Stellar Coronal Explorer (SSCE) carries six identical Ritchey-Chretien Telescopes of 127 mm aperture each; their images will be recorded by multianode microchannel-array detectors. The mirrors of five of the telescopes are coated with multilayer reflecting structures that select narrow XUV wavelength bands corresponding to strong emission lines emitted by solar or stellar coronal plasmas. Also noted here is a larger explorer mission concept, that of the Solar/Stellar Coronal Observatory, which will undertake more extensive spectroscopic observations.

    Description: The Ultra-High Resolution XUV Spectroheliograph (UHRXS) is a comprehensive solar observatory capable of studying solar phenomena at soft X-ray, XUV, EUV, and VUV wavelengths with normal incidence imaging multilayer telescopes capable of very high angular resolution (about 0.1 arcsec), and spectrographs able to achieve high spectral resolution. This instrument has been selected by NASA for flight as an attached payload on the Space Station Freedom. Recent developments have made it clear that accommodations for attached payloads on Freedom will not become available during the initial operations of Freedom and may never be available. We have studied the changes that must be made to place the UHRXS instrument on a Free Flying Plafform such as the Delta Launched Explorer Bus. We report on the configuration, performance, and accommodation on a free flying platform of the revised UHRXS concept.

    Description: The Multi-Spectral Solar Telescope Array (MSSTA) is a sounding rocket-borne solar observatory which was succesfully launched on May 13, 1991, from the White Sands Missile Range, NM. Ultrahigh resolution, full-disk solar X-ray, EUV, and FUV images were obtained with the MSSTA Herschelian, Cassegrain, and Ritchey-Chretien telescopes. We describe the payload and provide some preliminary scientific results from the flight.

    Description: The Broad-Band X-Ray Telescope (BBXRT) was designed to carry out moderate resolution spectrophotometry of cosmic X-ray sources in the 0.3-12 keV band from the Space Shuttle. It consists of a pair of coaligned conical foil telescopes, with cryogenically cooled Si(Li) spectrometers as focal instruments. It was flown as part of the Astro-1 mission in December, 1990. The in-flight performance of the instrument was essentially as predicted on the basis of ground calibration and modelling. We discuss the performance of the system, with emphasis on the conical mirror systems, and present some preliminary scientific results which illustrate the power of broad band, high sensitivity X-ray spectrophotometry.

    Description: We review the scientific objectives, configuration, and initial flight results of the Multi-Spectral Solar Telescope Array (MSSTA). The MSSTA is a comprehensive solar rocket-borne observatory which utilizes multilayer coated optics to achieve high resolution thermally resolved images of the sun at FUV, EUV and soft X-ray wavelengths. The MSSTA was successfully flown on May 13, 1991, obtaining high resolution images of chromospheric and coronal structures, including loops, filaments, polar plumes, and coronal holes. We also discuss plans to expand the capabilities of the MSSTA for future flights.

    Description: The X-ray test of the largest pair of nearly cylindrical mirrors for the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) was completed in October 1991 at Marshall Space Flight Center. The test assembly was named the Verification Engineering Test Article I (VETA-I). The ring-focus portion of the test measured the imaging quality of azimuthal sections of VETA-I. This gives information about the core of the on-orbit image. The finite source distance, VETA-I mirror spacing, and VETA-I structural deformation caused the core of the image to be spread over a diameter of nearly 4 arc seconds at the VETA-I overall focus. The results of a preliminary analysis of the ring-focus data and the implications for the on-orbit image of the telescope are discussed. An upper limit for the on-orbit encircled-energy fraction at 1 arc second diameter was determined to be 0.82 at 0.277 keV X-ray energy. This assumes that the bottoms of the mirrors in the VETA-I arrangement are representative of the mirror surfaces and that the on-orbit system would be aligned using a combination of preliminary measurements and predictions for the mirror surface shapes.

    Description: The potential of active structures technology for future IR and sub-mm telescopes deployed in space is discussed. A space infrared telescope with an aperture of at least 8 m, operating at about 50 k with surface precision better that 0.5 microns is required for future work in space IR and sub-mm astronomy. Telescope parameters, noise, and sensitivity are discussed. The effects of large scale figure errors are examined and conceptual designs of future space IR and sub-mm telescopes are presented. Possible uses of active structures technology and feedback control in future IR and sub-mm space observatories are suggested.

    Description: The AXAF is a meter-class telescope that is planned to be the third of NASA's Great Observatories, joining the Hubble Space Telescope and the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory in orbit before the end of this decade. The telescope will approach tenth-arc-second resolution over a dynamic range of 100 (0.1-10 keV). An assortment of gratings and focal plane detectors will be utilized to provide unprecedented imaging and spectroscopic capabilities in a long-lived facility. In particular, the AXAF is unique in its high resolution imaging, and in the hard X-ray spectroscopy that can be performed with both high resolution and high throughput.

    Description: The XTE will address a number of fundamental questions about the nature of the cosmos. The large effective area (about 0.8 sq m total) and broad band of sensitivity (2-200 keV) of its three instruments make it especially valuable for timing of intensity variations and for the determination of broadband spectra from high-energy sources. For the first time, studies of variability ranging from about 1 microsecond to several years will be carried out. XTE's design and flexibility of operations will allow it to respond rapidly to changes in the X-ray sky (within hours) and will facilitate multifrequency observations. It is scheduled for launch on a Delta II vehicle prior to April 1996.

    Description: The BATSE large-area detectors on the Compton Observatory can be used to monitor the variability of X-ray and gamma-ray sources on timescales longer than a few hours using the earth occultation technique. Spectral information is collected in 16 channels covering the energy range from about 25 to 2000 keV. Approximately 20 of the strongest sources are currently being monitored on a daily basis as part of standard BATSE operations. We discuss observations of the Crab Nebula, Cen A, and the Galactic center as examples of the current BATSE capabilities.

    Description: The Arthur Holly Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (Compton) was launched by the Space Shuttle Atlantis on 5 April 1991. The spacecraft and instruments are in good health and returning exciting results. The mission provides nearly six orders of magnitude in spectral coverage, from 30 keV to 30 GeV, with sensitivity over the entire range an order of magnitude better than that of previous observations. The 16,000 kilogram observatory contains four instruments on a stabilized platform. The mission began normal operations on 16 May 1991 and is now over half-way through a full-sky survey. The mission duration is expected to be from six to ten years. A Science Support Center has been established at Goddard Space Flight Center for the purpose of supporting a vigorous Guest Investigator Program. New scientific results to date include: (1) the establishment of the isotropy, combined with spatial inhomogeneity, of the distribution of gamma-ray bursts in the sky; (2) the discovery of intense high energy (100 MeV) gamma-ray emission from 3C 279 and other quasars and BL Lac objects, making these the most distant and luminous gamma-ray sources ever detected; (3) one of the first images of a gamma-ray burst; (4) the observation of intense nuclear and position-annihilation gamma-ray lines and neutrons from several large solar flares; and (5) the detection of a third gamma-ray pulsar, plus several other transient and pulsing hard X-ray sources.

    Description: We are conducting a search for emission-line objects at large redshifts, ostensibly young and forming galaxies. Our method is to search for strong line emission, in particular Ly-alpha, using two techniques: a direct, narrow-band imaging search using a Fabry-Perot interferometer; and a serendipitous long-slit spectroscopic search. Assuming that none of the faint candidates found so far are actually primeval galaxies, we can set the strongest limits to date on the surface density of Ly-alpha-luminous primeval galaxies on the sky. Some of the faint emission line galaxies detected in our survey at z roughly 0.5 - 1 may be representative of the faint blue galaxy population detected in deep continuum imaging surveys.

    Description: VLBI observations of the optically bright radio-emitting star Sigma Coronae Borealis (Sigma CrB) have yielded its position relative to an angularly nearby quasar, its annual proper motion and its trigonometric parallax with formal uncertainties slightly better than 0.2 milliarcsec. This is the first result of the VLBI astrometric program we are conducting on 11 radio stars similar to Sigma CrB. We plan to obtain comparable results for all stars when enough epochs of observations are acquired. These stars will be used to astrometrically link the Hipparcos and VLBI extragalactic reference frames.

    Description: The galactic cosmic-ray flux incident on the moon was examined for its potential adverse impact on the performance of the large lunar telescope (LLT) proposed as a part of NASA's Space Exploration Initiative (SEI). Noise produced by the cosmic-ray flux in the charge coupled devices to be used as the primary photodetector in the telescope was estimated. It was calculated that approximately 2.5 m of regolith would provide the shielding necessary to reduce the noise to an acceptable level. Dust is an omnipresent environmental concern for any human-assisted or robotic scientific instruments deployed on the moon. The degree to which dust poses an operational risk to the telescope was examined. Three potential methods for reducing this risk were identified: locating scientific instruments at remote locations; utilizing a prepared, dust-free site for all rocket activities; and covering the optics during high-risk times.

    Description: Plans for constructing permanent lunar bases and observatories under the Space Exploration Initiative are examined. The advantages of the lunar environment for astronomical observations are briefly reviewed, and the proposed lunar facilities are discussed. In particular, attention is given to a lunar optical interferometer, a submillimeter interferometer, a VLF radio array on the lunar far side, a large optical telescope, and a large installation for detecting gravitational waves.     Description: The Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) will be the first true infrared observatory in space, building upon the technical and scientific experience gained through its two NASA survey-oriented predecessors: the Infrared Astronomical Satellite and the Cosmic Background Explorer. During its minimum five year lifetime, the SIRTF will perform pointed scientific observations at wavelengths from 1.8 to 1200 microns with an increase in sensitivity over previous missions of several orders of magnitude. This paper discusses a candidate design for the SIRTF telescope, encompassing optics, cryostat, and instrument accommodation, which has been undertaken to provide a fulcrum for the development of functional requirements, interface definition, risk assessment and cost. The telescope optics employ a baffled Ritchey-Chretien Cassegrain system with a 1-m class primary mirror, an active secondary mirror, and a stationary facetted tertiary mirror. The optics are embedded in a large superfluid He cryostat designed to maintain the entire telescope-instrument system at temperatures below 3 K.

    Description: The objective of multi-use telescopes is to reduce the initial and operational costs of space telescopes to the point where a fair number of telescopes, a dozen or so, would be affordable. The basic approach is to develop a common telescope, control system, and power and communications subsystem that can be used with a wide variety of instrument payloads, i.e., imaging CCD cameras, photometers, spectrographs, etc. By having such a multi-use and multi-user telescope, a common practice for earth-based telescopes, development cost can be shared across many telescopes, and the telescopes can be produced in economical batches.

    Description: We searched the IRAS database at the positions of pulsars to see if they are associated with FIR sources, as might be expected if some pulsars possess preplanetary disks. There are 13 IRAS sources from the Point Source Catalog within 1 arcmin of nearly 500 radio pulsars. While this does not represent an enhancement over the number of chance coincidences, we argue that several are in fact associated with pulsars.

    Description: It is argued that increases in the precision of photometric measurements and the development of fully automatic photometric telescopes (APTs) now make possible the detection of Jupiter-size objects around other stars. The two most promising approaches are to monitor binary stars that have their orbital plane nearly in our line of sight and to measure the rotation periods of stars that are known to have dark companions and have very accurate values for Vsini. Differential photometry with APTs, based on a rapid comparison among a group of stars, provides a precision of 2 parts in 1000. Transits of solar-type stars by planets or brown dwarfs the size of Jupiter or Saturn will produce brightness variations of about 10 parts per 1000.

    Description: It is shown that the alleged 'unexplained anomalies in the motion of Uranus' disappear when one properly accounts for the correct value of the mass of Neptune and properly adjusts the orbit of Uranus to the observational data. Also, it is shown that each of the 'irregularities in the measured positions of Neptune' has a complete explanation within the framework of the presently known solar system. As a check of certainty, an actual planetary ephemeris is integrated which well fits the observations of Uranus. Minor systematic errors do remain in the data, but they are very small; they are easily explained by a number of uncertainties in the observations themselves. There is now known to be a mass concentration of significant size in the outer solar system - 1992 QB1. In comparison to any of the major planets, though, this object is miniscule. For the meridian circle observations, there is still no evidence which requires or even indicates the existence of any planet-sized object; there remains no need to hypothesize the existence of a tenth planet in the solar system.

    Description: The Broad Band X-Ray Telescope, covering the 0.3-12 keV bandpass with moderate spectral resolution, observed the Be/X-ray binary X Per in 1990 December during the Astro-l mission on the Space Shuttle Columbia. The data obtained are the best to date to search for lines and edges. The data are well fitted by a power-law spectrum with a high-energy cutoff. A low value for the high-energy cutoff is found, implying a slightly weaker magnetic field strength for the X-ray pulsar. No iron line is present at about 6.5 keV with an equivalent width greater than 30-40 eV. The BBXRT observation corresponded to the 'off' state of X Per's recent 'phase change'.

    Description: On 1991 October 29, the Galileo spacecraft provided the first in situ observations of an asteroid. To a significant degree, the successful encounter with asteroid 951 Gaspra was made possible by the high accuracy of the ground-based Gaspra ephemeris and the refinement to this initial ephemeris provided by the use of optical navigation images taken on board the spacecraft itself. The success of these celestial navigation efforts was dramatically demonstrated when Gaspra appeared in the central frame of the large mosaic of CCD images-less than one asteroid diameter from Gaspra's expected location in the camera's field of view. The corrections to Gaspra's ground-based ephemeris, based upon the optical on-board navigation images, were less than 80 km. The ground-based observation program that went into this ephemeris development is discussed and the accuracy of the ephemeris is used to validate the assumptions that went into the error analysis studies.

    Description: Several approaches to imaging hard X-rays emitted from solar flares have been proposed or are planned for the nineties including the spatial modulation collimator (SMC) and the rotating modulation collimator (RMC). A survey of current solar flare theoretical literature indicates the desirability of spatial resolutions down to 1 arcsecond, field of views greater than the full solar disk (i.e., 32 arcminutes), and temporal resolutions down to 1 second. Although the sun typically provides relatively high flux levels, the requirement for 1 second temporal resolution raises the question as to the viability of Fourier telescopes subject to the aforementioned constraints. A basic photon counting, Monte Carlo 'end-to-end' model telescope was employed using the Astronomical Image Processing System (AIPS) for image reconstruction. The resulting solar flare hard X-ray images compared against typical observations indicated that both telescopes show promise for the future.

    Description: We have searched the ROSAT Wide Field Camera all-sky survey for shorttime-scale (less than 50 s) XUV bursts down to a limiting count of 5 x 10 exp -3 count/sq arcmin, corresponding to an incident flux of about 3 x 10 exp -10 erg/sq cm. In a total observation period of 171 d covering the entire sky, we found no evidence for such events. The present results are used to place limits on the log N-log S relation for gamma-ray bursts and constraints on the spectral shape of the previously reported ultrasoft X-ray transients.

    Description: The paper describes some of the high-energy observations of the Crab-Nebula pulsar, PSR0531+22. The pulse profiles of the Crab pulsar obtained in balloon-borne observations in 1967 and 1980 are presented. At present, gamma-ray scintillation detectors aboard the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) form the basis of the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE). The pulsar, which is observed daily by the BATSE, is used by all four GRO/BATSE detectors as a calibration source since it emits a steady, strong, well-known spectrum of gamma rays over the entire energy range to which detectors are sensitive. The paper presents an example of a pulse profile obtained with the BATSE.

    Description: The Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRFT) is a one-meter-class, liquid-helium-cooled, earth-orbiting astronomical observatory that will be the infrared component of NASA's family of Great Observatories. SIRTF will investigate numerous scientific areas including formation and evolution of galaxies, stars, and other solar systems; supernovae; phenomena in our own solar system; and, undoubtedly, topics that are outside today's scientific domain. SIRTF's three instruments will permit imaging at all infrared wavelengths from 1.8 to 1200 microns and spectroscopy from 2.5 to 200 microns. The observatory will operate at an altitude of 100,000 km where it will achieve a five-year lifetime and operate with better than 80 percent on-target efficiency. The scientific importance and technical and programmatic readiness of SIRTF has been recognized by the 1991 report of the National Research Council's Astronomy and Astrophysics Survey Committee which recently identified SIRTF as the highest priority major new initiative in all of astronomy for the coming decade.

    Description: In order to obtain gravity data for Venus, the Magellan spacecraft will furnish an unmodulated downlink carrier signal which is coherent with a highly stable uplink from the NASA-JPL Deep Space Network. After the removal of gross Doppler shifts induced by planetary motions and Magellan's primary orbital motion, residual Doppler shifts will indicate miniscule gravity variations in the mass distributions at, and below, the Venusian surface. These gravity measurements are valuable for understanding the nature and origin of features identifiable with imaging data.

    Description: An 820 minute and other long-exposure archival SWP IUE high-dispersion spectra of symbiotic star RR Tel have been combined to form a composite spectrum. In most of these spectra many lines are saturated, but weaker features appear above the continuum. Their wavelengths were measured from the composite spectrum and compared with the line list from a thorough study of RR Tel by Penston et al. (1983). Among the revised line list are 22 new line identifications from ions C III, O I, N I, Mg VI, Si I, S I, S IV, Fe II, and Ni II. N I exists inside RR Tel's H II region and is pumped by the hot component's continuum. The fluxes for all the lines in each of the spectra are presented. All of the observed ions show a secular flux decrease between 1978 and 1988. A list of SWP high-dispersion camera artifacts is also presented. The list was generated by comparing RR Tel spectra to a long-exposure sky flat.

Indirect detection may be possible using ground based instrumentation on the Keck telescope, Imaging probably will require an orbiting system. Characterizing other planets for complex molecules will require a large orbiting or lunar-based telescope or inteferometer. Cryogenic infrared techniques appear to be necessary. Planning for a NASA ground and space-based program, Toward Other Planet Systems (TOPS), is proceeding.

    Description: This article provides the reduced astrographic observations of the major Uranian satellites derived from star-satellite imaging data acquired by the Voyager 2 spacecraft. The data set contains 445 sets of spacecraft-centered right ascension and declination observations and includes all of the observations used in Voyager encounter operations. The conversion process from imaging to astrographic observations was identical to that used for the Neptunian satellites (Jacobson 1991). The effect of using the astrographic rather than imaging form in ephemeris improvement is evaluated.

    Description: The edge technique is a new and powerful method for measuring small frequency shifts such as the Doppler shift of an atmospheric backscattered signal from a pulsed laser. The edge technique can be used for high spatial resolution, high accuracy ground and airborne wind measurements as well as high accuracy spaceborne wind measurements. We have recently made our first ground based wind measurements. These have a spatial resolution of 15 m and an accuracy of 25 cm/s and these measurements are presented in this paper. This is a unique capability and provides valuable information for studies of turbulent processes in the lower atmosphere. It could also be used for high sensitivity detection of wind shear and microbursts in the vicinity of airports. In addition, global wind measurements can be made with the edge technique from space with an accuracy of 1 m/s and a vertical resolution as high as 150 m in the boundary layer and 1 km through the troposphere. Such a system could make eyesafe wind measurements using well developed diode pumped solid state laser technology at 1.06 micron. Multi-pulse averaging would provide a spatially representative wind measurement.

    Description: Arp 105 of an infrared luminous starburst spiral being torn apart by a massive elliptical close to the center of a cluster of galaxies. The elliptical has already accreted gasrich objects and may be the precursor of a giant cD galaxy. At the tip of colossal tidal tails that emanate from the spiral we find a blue compact dwarf galacy and an irregular of Magellanic type. We propose that these small galaxies are recycled objects being formed out of the tidal debris from the spiral. In Arp 105 we observe that the collision has caused a marked spatial separation of the cold interstellar gas: more than 90% of the CO emission comes from the central region of the spiral, whereas more than 90% of the observed atomic hydrogen is situated beyond 30 kpc from the center of the spiral.

    Description: We present a grid of stellar classification spectra of moderate resolution (R approximately 1500) in the range lambda lambda 5600-9000 A, compiled from high signal-to noise spectra of 275 stars, most in the open clusters Praesepe and M67. The grid covers dwarfs from types B8 through M5, giants from G8 through M7, and subgiants from F5 through K0. We catalog atomic and molecular absorption features useful for stellar classification, and demonstrate the use of luminosity-sensitive features to distinguish between late-type dwarf and giant stars. The entire database is made available in digital format on anonymous ftp and through the World Wide Web.

    Description: In the past two centuries, alert amateur and professional meteor astronomers have documented 35 outbursts of 17 individual meteor streams well enough to allow the construction of a homogeneous set of activity curves. These curves add to similar profiles of the annual streams in a previous paper (Paper 1). This paper attempts to define the type and range of phenomena that classify as meteor outbursts from which the following is concluded: Outbursts are associated with the return of the comet to perihelion (near-comet type outbursts), but occur also when the parent comet is far from perihelion and far from the Earth (far-comet type). All outbursts of a given type only, depending on encounter geometry. The activity curves, expressed in terms of Zenith Hourly Rates (ZHR), have a shape that is generally well described by: ZHR = ZHR(sub max) 10(sup(-B (the absolute value of lambda (sub dot in a circle) - lambda (sup max) (sub dot in a circle))). The steepness of the slopes varies from an exponent of B = 7 to B = 220 per degree of solar longitude, with a typical value of B = 30. In addition, most near-comet type outbursts have a broader component underlying the main peak with B approximately 1 - 7.The duration Delta t is approximately 1/B of the main peak is almost independent of location near the comet, while the background component varies considerably in duration and relative intensity from one return to another. The two components in the activity curve are due to two distinct structures in the dust distribution near the parent comet, where the main component can be due to a sheet of dust that emanates from the IRAS dust trail. This brings the total number of distinct structures in meteor streams to four, including the two structures from the annual stream activity in Paper 1.

    Description: SS Cygni and HL Canis majoris were observed by IUE for three consecutive nights in November of 1992. During the first two nights, simultaneous photometric ground-based observations of SS Cyg were made at the Ball State University Observatory. Observations of SS Cyg and HL CMa were also obtained simultaneously with the 90-inch telescope at the Steward Observatory on the last two nights of the IUE run. These spectroscopic observations covered the wavelength range from 4100 to 5000 A, while the spectra taken with the short wavelength camera on IUE resulted in wavelength coverage from 1150 A to 1980 A. SS Cyg is a U Geminorum-type dwarf nova with an orbital period of 6.6 hr. Good simultaneous UV and optical orbital coverage was obtained for this system. HL CMa is a Z Camelopardalis-type dwarf nova with a mean outburst interval of 15 days. The American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) reports that this system was in outburst 4 days after the observing run. Therefore, HL CMa may have been in a preoutburst state during these observations. Optical spectra of HL CMa indicate a warm front passed through the outer disk four days before outburst, but no changes were seen in the UV spectra. Signs of a preoutburst state were observed to develop in SS Cyg, but no outburst occurred for another 30 days.

    Description: On five occasions between 1992 June 29 and 1994 May 3, we have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to image Eta Carinae at a wavelength of 3 cm and a resolution of 1 arcsec. These observations have revealed remarkable activity. Since 1992 June, the total flux density has increase from 0.8 to 2.2 Jy, and the original single compact source has grown to a complex of sources spread over an area of about 16 sq arcsec. Strong hydrogen recombination-line spectral emission has appeared at the site of the strongest of these new sources. This recombination emission has the largest spectral width ever observed from a star, +/- 250 km/s, and reveals gas with turbulent velocities as great as 250 km/s approaching us at an average velocity of about 200 km/s. We believe that this radio outburst has been caused by a more than threefold increase of ultraviolet luminosity, and consequent ionization of previously neutral gas clouds.

    Description: The bright quasar Kaz 102, which lies in the vicinity of the North Ecliptic Pole, was monitored during the ROSAT All Sky Survey for 121.5 days from 1990 July 30 to 1991 January 25. In the course of the survey, optical photometry with various filters was peformed at several epochs, together with UV (IUE) and optical spectrophotometry. The spectral energy distribution in the 3 x 10(exp 14) -3 x 10(exp 17) Hz range is obtained simultaneously among the various frequencies to less than or = 1 day. No clear case of variability can be made in the X-rays, while in the optical and UV variability of 10%-20% is apparent. An analysis of IUE and Einstein archives indicates a doubling timescale of years for the UV and soft X-ray flux. The X-ray photon index, which in 1979 was rather flat (Gamma = 0.8(+0.6 -0.4), in 1990/1991 was found to be Gamma = 2.22 +/- 0.13, a typical value for radio-quiet quasars in this energy range. The overall energy distribution and the variability are discussed.

    Description: The abundances of C, O, Al, Ca, iron-peak and s-process elements have been derived from high-resolution spectra for a sample of stars classified as F str lambda 4077 by Bidelman. Among the 20 stars mentioned by Bidelman, we have discovered 8 barium dwarfs (or CH subgiants, according to Bond's terminology), while a 9th star, HD 182274, was already known as a CH subgiant. In addition, we have analyzed three barium stars taken from the list of Lu et al. (1983) which are probably dwarfs rather than giants, and three CH subgiants. The other 11 F str lambda 4077 stars resemble either the delta Delphini stars, since their iron abundance is enhanced while Ca is normal, or are probably spectrum composites. A few Am, Ap, lambda Bootis and normal stars have been analyzed for comparison. In particular, we have included three lambda Boo candidates, selected from their photometric properties, and their iron deficiency is confirmed. The spectroscopic, photometric and statistical evidences concerning the Ba dwarfs, support the idea that these stars may be the main sequence counterparts, and possibly the progenitors of the Ba giants. The C/O ratio varies in these stars from normal values to a maximum of 1.5, but mostly within 0.6 and 1.2. Some of these objects may therefore be considered, in this sense, as carbon stars. On the other hand, the abundances of carbon and s-process elements relative to iron are inversely correlated with metallicity, and may even exceed significantly those of typical, solar-metallicity carbon stars. Metal-deficient C stars must therefore have (C/Fe) greater than or approximately equal to 1 and (s/Fe) greater than or approximately equal to 1.5 as soon as (Fe/H) less than or approximately equal to -1. The neutron exposure is shown to increase when the metallicity decreases, which is compatible with the C-13 (alpha, n) O-16 neutron source, but not with the Ne-22 (alpha, n) Mg-25 one. The evolutionary state (within the main sequence) of the Ba dwarfs, is rediscussed in relation with their photometric and spectroscopic surface gravity, but it remains unclear.

    Description: Extraordinary, semistellar, line-emitting knots are apparent in images of the Crab Nebula which were obtained with the Goddard Fabry-Perot imager at the Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT Observatory. The knots are most prominent for (O III) lambda 5007 emission through a 5.3 A (Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM)) bandpass centered at 5015.3 A, with representative fluxes of roughly 10(exp -14) ergs/sq cm. They are aligned in arcs, seven to the north and four to the south, from the pulsar. The northern group appears to be in a bounded corridor through the filamentary structure. Measurements over a 2 year baseline yield proper motions of order 0.1 sec/yr, corresponding to transverse velocities of order 900 km/s for a distance of 1830 pc. The knots are characterized by remarkably strong (Ar III) emission, possibly indicating high argon abundances, high gas temperatures, or anomalous physical processes.

    Description: The two main, low frequency radio components discovered at Neptune by the Planetary Radio Astronomy experiment carried aboard Voyager 2 have a well defined periodicity at about 16.1 hour. By analyzing all the available data, i.e. about 60 days around the closest approach for the 'Burst' component and 15 days for the 'Smooth' component, we determine, for each component, the best estimate of the radio period. We conclude that the two estimates are not statistically different. While the two kinds of radio emissions have very different characteristics (in particular their frequency ranges and beaming properties), and probably correspond to different emission processes, their modulation is very likely due to the rotation of the planetary magnetic field tied to the core of the planet, as it has already been assumed for the other giant planets. The deduced estimate of the sidereal rotation period of Neptune is 16.108 +/- 0.006 (or 16h06.5m +/- 0.04 m).

    Description: This paper describes the calibration of the two solid-state Si(Li) X-ray detectors and the X-ray telescopes that flew as part of Goddard Space Flight Center's Broad Band X-Ray Telescope (BBXRT) experiment on board the space shuttle Columbia in 1990 December. During the 9 day shuttle mission, BBXRT performed approximately 150 observations of 82 celestial sources. The content of the archive is summarized here. Although BBXRT had a relatively short life, it stands as a milestone in X-ray astronomy as being the first instrument to offer moderate spectral resolution over a wide bandpass (0.3-12.0 keV). Among other things, this paper discusses the effective area calibration of the instrument, the flux calibration and flux corrections for off-axis observations, the detector background, and optimal background subtraction techniques. The on-axis effective area calibration for the central detector elements was performed using data from the Crab Nebula, while other carefully selected targets were used for calibration of the outer detector elements. The remaining systematic uncertainties in the effective area calibration for point sources observed both on and off axis are generally less than 5%-10%. The energy scale is known to better than 0.5% at 6.0 keV for both detectors. The results presented here have an impact on the calibration of other medium resolution X-ray experiments such as the CCDs on board ASCA (Astro-D) as well as the Advanced X-Ray Astrophysics Facility detectors.

    Description: A gravitationally lensed gamma-ray burst (GRB) would appear as multiple bursts with identical light curves, separated in time and differing only by the scaling of their amplitudes. In reality, the detected bursts will be noisy, and therefore they may be difficult to identify as lensed images. Furthermore, faint, intrinsically similar, yet distinct light curves may be falsely identified as lensing events. In this paper we develop two statistical tests to distinguish noisy burst light curves. We use Fourier analysis techniques to analyze the signals for both intrinsic variability and variability due to noise. We are able to determine the noise level, and we compare the bursts only at frequency channels that are signal dominated. Utilizing these methods, we are able to make quantitative statements about whether two bursts are distinct. We apply these statistics to scaled versions of two subbursts of GRB 910503 -- subbursts previously investigated by Wambsganss using a different statistical test. We find that our methods are able to distinguish these bursts at slightly smaller amplitudes than those at which Wambsganss's method succeeds. We then apply our techniques to 'candidate' lensing events taken from the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) catalog, and we find that nearly all of them, except for the very shortest ones (durations approx. less than 3 sec), are distinguishable. We therefore expect that a majority of bursts will be distinguishable from one another.

    Description: We present new optical and near-infrared images of the hydrogen-poor planetary nebula Abell 30 and produce detailed models that account for the major observed morphological and IR properties. By imaging the nebula in the K band, we confirm the presence of hot dust in an expanding equatorial ring of H-poor gas. No emission was detected from the H-poor polar knots, suggesting a dust deficiency htere relative to the equatorial ring. The near-IR emission is attributed to small carbonaceous dust grains which are stochastically heated by stellar ultraviolet photons. Using an adaptive version of a matrix method devised by Guhathakurta & Draine (1989) to model stochastic heating, we find that the near-IR spectrum observed by Dinerstein & Lester (1984) requires the presence of dust grains down to approximately 0.0007 microns in radius. This minimum grain radius is in excellent agreement with our calculations of the grain destruction by energetic stellar UV photons: we find that carbon clusters with less than approximately 140 atoms (0.0007 microns in radius) are destroyed by stellar UV photons in approximately 1000 yr, the kinematic age of H-poor ejecta. Modeling of the far-IR dust emission implies that the bulk of the dust mass in A30 must reside at distances several times greater than the distance of the equatorial ring from the central star. This spatial dust distribution is attributed to the interaction of the stellar wind with the inhomogeneous H-poor ejecta. Most of the H-poor gas and dust has been apparently carried outward by the stellar wind, leaving behing dense, H-poor knots with prominent wind-blown tails in the equatorial ring and in the polar knots. This picture is supported by the presence of a stellar wind-blown bubble within the H-rich envelope in our optical images.

    Description: An occultation of the star GSC 6323-01396 (V = 11.9) by Saturn's rings was observed with the High-Speed Photometer on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) on 1991 October 2-3. This occultation occurred when Saturn was near a stationary point, so the apparent motion of Saturn relative to the star was dominated by the HST orbital motion (8 km/s). Data were recorded simultaneously at effective wavelengths of 3200 and 7500 A, with an integration time of 0.15 s. Fifteen segments of occultation data, totaling 6.8 h, were recorded in 13 successive orbits during the 20.0 h interval from UTC 1991 October 2, 19:35 until UTC 1991 October 3, 15:35. Occultations by 43 different features throughout the classical rings were unambiguously identified in the light curve, with a second occultation by 24 of them occurring due to spacecraft orbital parallax during this extremely slow event. Occultation times for features currently presumed circular were measured and employed in a geometrical model for the rings. This model, relating the observed occultation times to feature radii and longitudes, is presented here and is used in a least-squares fit for the pole direction and radius scale of Saturn's ring system.

    Description: Images of the gravitational lens system MG 1131+0456 taken with the near-infrared camera on the W. M. Keck telescope in the J and K(sub s) bands show that the infrared counterparts of the compact radio structure are exceedingly red, with J - K greater than 4.2 mag. The J image reveals only the lensing galaxy, while the K(sub s) image shows both the lens and the infrared counterparts of the compact radio components. After subtracting the lensing galaxy from the K(sub s) image, the position and orientation of the compact components agree with their radio counterparts. The broad-band spectrum and observed brightness of the lens suggest a giant galaxy at a redshift of approximately 0.75, while the color of the quasar images suggests significant extinction by dust in the lens. There is a significant excess of faint objects within 20 sec of MG 1131+0456. Depending on their mass and redshifts, these objects could complicate the lensing potential considerably.

    Description: The angular power spectrum estimator developed by Peebles (1973) and Hauser & Peebles (1973) has been modified and applied to the 2 yr maps produced by the Cosmic Background Explorer Satellite Differential Microwave Radiometer (COBE DMR)). The power spectrum of the real sky has been compared to the power spectra of a large number of simulated random skies produced with noise equal to the observed noise and primordial density fluctuation power spectra of power-law form, with P(k) proportional to k(exp n). Within the limited range of spatial scales covered by the COBE DMR, corresponding to spherical harmonic indices 3 less than or = l is less than or approximately = 30, the best-fitting value of the spectral index is n = 1.25(sup +0.39 sub -0.44) with the Harrisson-Zel'dovich value n = 1 approximately 0.5 sigma below the best fit. For 3 less than or = l less than or approximately = 19, the best fit is n = 1.46(sup +0.39 sub -0.44). Comparing the COBE DMR delta-T/T at small l to the delta-T/T at l approximately = 50 from degree scale anisotropy experiments gives a smaller range of acceptable spectral indices which includes n = 1.

    Description: Celestial visibility is the study of the limits of observability of objects in the sky, with application to deducing the truth about historical events or to the derivation of astronomical information of modern utility. This study is based on what is seen by ordinary humans, either in their everyday lives or at times of historical events. The results of such studies have more relevance to non-scientists than does any other area of astronomy. Celestial visibility is a young discipline in the sense that the number of interesting applications with simple solutions outnumber the solved problems; it is a broad interdisciplinary field that involves work with astronomy, meteorology, optics, physics, physiology, history, and archeology. Each of these disciplines contribute specialized mathematical formulations which quantify the many processes that affect light as it leaves a source, traverses the atmosphere, and is detected by the human eye. These formulas can then be combined as appropriate to create mathematical models for the visibility of the source under the conditions of interest. These model results can then be applied a wide variety of problems arising in history, astronomy, archeology, meteorological optics, and archeoastronomy. This review also presents a dozen suggestions for observing projects, many of which can be directly taken for individual study, for classroom projects, or for professional research.

    Description: The ASCA Observatory provides the first capability to map a diffuse X-ray source in individually resolved emission lines. We have applied this capability to the Cas A supernova remnant, measuring the mean energies and equivalent widths of 14 line features in three distinct spatial regions. The northwest (NW) and southeast (SE) regions provide the large fraction of the X-ray emission at energies below 4 keV, and define the axis of a Doppler map of the remnant constructed by measuring the peak energy of the prominent Si-K feature. Using restoration techniques to obtain image quality equivalent to 30 sec full width at half maximum (FWHM), we present restored images in the two brightest line features, and in two continuum bands. An emission region in the west is increasingly prominent at higher energies, and its markedly lower metallicity and correlation with radio emission suggest that its X-ray emission has a larger component from fore-shocked material than do the NW and SE regions where the emission is presumed to be dominated by reverse-shocked material.

    Description: A hard X-ray source with a 2-10 keV flux of approximately 6 x 10(exp -13) ergs/sec/sq cm was detected with ASCA in the north ecliptic pole region. It is identified with the spiral galaxy NGC 6552 at a redshift of z = 0.026, which is optically classified as a Seyfert 2 galaxy. The X-ray spectrum consists of a series of atomic K-emission lines from (nearly-) neutral species of at least seven abundant elements, and a heavily absorbed (N(sub H) approx. = 6 x 10(exp 23)/sq cm) hard continuum. The iron line has an equivalent width as large as approximately 0.9 keV. Our results show that NGC 6552 is an extreme type 2 Seyfert galaxy, in which the fluorescent lines are produced when hard X-rays from a hidden active nucleus are reflected off thick cool matter into our line of sight. The intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity of the nucleus is estimated to be at least 6 x 10(exp 42) ergs/s.

    Description: We present here new Very Long Base Interferometry (VLBI) observations of one Fanaroff and Riley (F-R) I radio galaxy (NGC 2484) and two broad-line F-R II radio galaxies (3C 109 and 3C 382). For 3C 109 new Very Large Array (VLA) maps are also shown. These sources belong to a complete sample of radio galaxies under study for a better knowledge of their structures at parsec resolution. The parsec structure of these three objects is very similar: asymmetric emission, which we interpret as the core plus a one-side jet. The parsec-scale jet is always on the same side of the main kiloparsec-scale jet. The limit on the jet to counterjet brightness ratio, the ratio of the core radio power to the total radio power and the synchrotron-self Compton model allow us to derive some constraints on the jet velocity and orientation with respect to the line of sight. From these data and from those published on two other sources of our sample, we suggest that parsec-scale jets are relativistic in both F-R I and F-R II radio galaxies and that parsec scale properties in F-R I and F-R II radio galaxies are very similar despite the large difference between these two classes of radio galaxies on the kiloparsec scale.

    Description: The physical conditions in the narrow-line regions of two Seyfert 2 galaxies, NGC 7674 and I Zw 92, are examined using IUE spectra, published optical spectra and multifrequency observations, and photoionization models. For each Seyfert galaxy, the emission-line fluxes were dereddened using the He II lambda(1640)/lambda(4686) ratio. Photoionization models were calculated using a power-law index determined from the He II lambda(4686)/H-beta ratio; the index is very similar to that obtained from a fit to the observed multifrequency continuum from the infrared to the X-rays. The models were calculated in a way that minimized the number of assumptions, and given the uncertainties in the reddening corrections, the calculated ratios match nearly all of the dereddened ratios successfully. a multicomponent model (three components with different densities and ionization parameters) was required to fit the spectrum of I Zw 92, whereas a single component was sufficient for NGC 7674. The CNO abundances are close to solar, although a reduced abundance of up to one-third solar for one or more of the heavy elements is possible. In contrast to a previous study of Mrk 3, dust inside the narrow-line region (NLR) louds was not required to fit the spectra of these two Seyfert galaxies, although the emission lines experience considerable reddening from external dust. Higher signal-to-noise spectra in the UV are essential for placing further restrictions on the reddening and physical conditions in the narrow-line regions of Seyfert galaxies.

    Description: Archival high-dispersion International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra have been used to search for circumstellar gas absorption features in alpha PsA (A3 V), a nearby (6.7 pc) proto-planetary system candidate. Recent sub-millimeter mapping observations around the region of alpha PsA indicate a spatially resolved dust disk like the one seen around Beta Pic. To determine how closely this putative disk resembles that of Beta Pic, we have searched for signatures of circumstellar gaseous absorption in all the available IUE high-dispersion data of alpha PsA. Examination of co-added IUE spectra shows weak circumstellar absorptions from excited levels in the resonance multiplet of Fe II near 2600 A. We also conclude that the sharp C I feature near 1657 A, previously identified as interstellar absorption toward alpha PsA, likely has a circumstellar origin. However, because the weakness of these absorption features, we will consider the presence of circumstellar gas as tentative and should be verified by using the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. No corresponding circumstellar absorption is detected in higher ionization Fe III and Al III. Since the collisionally ionized nonphotospheric Al III resonance absorption seen in Beta Pic is likely formed close to the stellar surface, its absence in the UV spectra of alpha PsA could imply that, in contrast with Beta Pic, there is no active gaseous disk infall onto the central star. In the alpha PsA gaseous disk, if we assume a solar abundance for iron and all the iron is in the form of Fe II, plus a disk temperature of 5000 K, the Fe II UV1 absorption at 2611.8743 A infers a total hydrogen column density along the line of sight through the circumstellar disk of N(H) approximately equals 3.8 x 10(exp 17)/cm.

    Description: Two hard state (X-ray low state) outbursts in the GX 339-4 system in 1991 June-October and 1992 September-1993 January were detected and monitored by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO). The outbursts were remarkably similar in both temporal and spectral aspects. The spectrum in the 20-300 keV band evolves from a hard, Comptonized shape to a steeper (alpha approximately equals -3) power law during each outburst.

    Description: To test the hypothesis that galactic winds associated with star formation in low mass disk galaxies can be an effective means of relocating cold disk gas to a warm tenuous halo, we have obtained long exposure ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) observations of three such galaxies. The sensitivity of the PSPC to the presence of an extended, approximately 0.15 KEV halo of 10(exp 9) solar mass of gas, is quite high for the exposure times we used. We failed to detect this halo in all three cases and the observed x-ray luminosity of the galaxy is two orders of magnitude less than the hypothetical case in which the mass of gas that has been expelled by previous generations of star formation is equal to the stellar mass of the galaxy itself. This limit is much less than the actual mass of cold gas in these galaxies. Thus, we were unable to verify directly the presence of significant galactic winds in these three galaxies either because they are not operative, because their halos are not sufficiently massive to aid in the retention of this gas, or because the amount of injected gas is just a small percentage of the cold disk gas. If the latter reason is emblematic of low mass galaxies then we would not expect the detection of halos. We also report here the serendipitous detection of Abell 1560, a distance class 7 cluster of unknown redshift.

    Description: We used a set of spatially resolved spectra of comet Halley to explore whether the gas distribution profile could be inverted to yield information on the rotation of the comet. The data were obtained both pre- and post-perihelion. The pre-perihelion data showed reasonable symmetry and so were used to define the lifetimes against photodissociation of the various molecules. These lifetimes were then used to define the lifetimes against photodissociation of the various molecules. These lifetimes were then used along with a nonsteady-state vectorial model to fit the post-perihelion gas distribution profiles. The resulting molecular lightcurves are compared with the photometric lightcurves of Schlicher et al. (1990) to show that the rotational information is encoded in the observed gas distribution within the coma. The molecular lightcurves can differentiate between the preferred Schlicher et al. average period and the period they find for the same time interval as the spectra.

    Description: Spectra of the North Equatorial Belt of Jupiter were obtained in March 1992 at an unapodized resolution of 0.1/cm between 2450 and 2600/cm with the Fourier Transform Spectrometer at the 3.6 m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) on Mauna Kea. Several emissions from the nu(sub 2) band of H3(+) were detected. The excitation temperature derived from the relative intensities of these emissions averaged over a wide range of longitudes is 800 +/- 100 K, and the H3(+) column density is 1.56(sup +1.0)(sub -0.5) x 10(exp 11)/sq. cm. In addition, several strong absorption features due to (13)CH4 were observed. A comparison between (12)CH4 and (13)CH4 absorptions allowed us to obtain a new measurement of the C-12/C-13 ratio. We found that this ratio, estimated for the first time in this spectral range, is 89 (+/- 25), in agreement with the terrestrial value.

    Description: The Astrometric Imaging Telescope (AIT) is a proposed spaceborne observatory whose primary goal is the detecton and study of extra-solar planetary systems. It contains two instruments that use complementary techniques to address the goal. The first instrument, the Coronagraphic Imager, takes direct images of nearby stars and Jupiter-size planets. It uses a telescope with scattering-compensated optics and a high-efficiency coronagraph to separate reflected planet light from the central star light. Planet detections take hours; confirmations occur in months. With a program duration of about 2 years, about 50 stars are observed. The second instrument, the Astrometric Photometer, shares the same telescope and focal plane. It uses a Ronchi ruling that is translated across the focal plane to simultaneously measure the positions of each target star and about 25 reference stars with sufficient accuracy to detect Uranus-mass planets around hundreds of stars. Enough stars of several spectral types are observed to obtain a statistically significant measurement of the prevalence of planetary systems. This observing program takes about 10 years to complete. The combination of both instruments in a single telescope system results from a number of innovative solutions that are described in this paper.

    Description: The National Radio Astronomy Observatory's proposed Millimeter Array (MMA) will bring unprecedented sensitivity, angular resolution, and image dynamic range to the millimeter wavelength region of the spectrum. An obvious question is whether such an instrument could be used to detect planets orbiting nearby stars. The techniques of aperture synthesis imaging developed for centimeter wavelength radio arrays are capable of producing images whose dynamic ranges greatly exceed the brightness ratio of a solar-type star and a Jupiter-like planet at sub-millimeter or millimeter wavelengths. The angular resolution required to separate a star and planet at a few pc distance can be obtained with baselines of several km. The greatest challenge is sensitivity. At the highest possible observing frequencies (approximately 300 GHz for typical high, dry sites, and approximately 900 GHz from the Antarctic plateau), the proposed MMA will be unable to detect the thermal emission from a Jupiter-like planet a few pc away. An upgraded MMA operating near 300 GHz with twice the currently proposed number of antennas, a 20% fractional bandwidth, and improved receivers could detect Jupiter at 4 pc in a few months. Building such an array on the Antarctic plateau and operating at approximately 900 GHz would allow Jupiter at 4 pc to be detected in approximately one day of observing time.

    Description: This paper discusses the concept of extrasolar planet detection using a large-aperture infared imaging telescope. Coronagraphic stellar apodization techniques are less efficient at infrared wavelengths compared to the visible, as a result of practical limitations on aperture dimensions, thus necessitating additional starlight suppression to make planet detection feasible in this spectral domain. We have been investigating the use of rotational shearing interferometry to provide up to three orders of magnitude of starlight suppression over broad spectral bandwidths. We present a theoretical analysis of the system performance requirements needed to make this a viable instrument for planet detection, including specifications on the interferometer design and telescope aperture characteristics. The concept of using rotational shearing interferometry as a wavefront error detector, thus providing a signal that can be used to adaptively correct the wavefront, will be discussed. We also present the status of laboratory studies of on-axis source suppression using a recently constructed rotational shearing interferometer that currently operates in the visible.

    Description: If the hypothesis is correct that most solar-like stars have planetary systems and have planets in inner orbits, then approximately 1% of these stars should have planets with orbital planes close enough to our line of sight to show transits. To get a statistically significant estimate of the fraction of stars that have planets in inner orbits, it is necessary to monitor thousands of stars continuously for a period of several years. To accomplish this requires the use of a multi-channel photometer system. We present here several multi-channel methods that have been used for ground-based observations and a concept for applying multi-channel photometry to the detection of numerous Earth-sized planets.

    Description: This paper reviews recent results in gamma-ray astronomy obtained from experiments flown on high-altitude balloons. New generation balloon-borne imaging experiments have produced the first gamma-ray maps of the Galactic center (GC) region. Balloon flights of new gamma-ray spectrometers with improved sensitivity have provided important new information on the GC annihilation line. For the first time, the narrow 511 keV line as been resolved (FWHM approx. = 3 keV). A very interesting spectral feature at approximately 170 keV has been attributed to backscattered annihilation, probably from the vicinity of a compact object. New results from the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO)/OSSE and Granat/SIGMA experiments on the annihilation line, when considered together with the recent balloon results, have added greatly to our knowledge and understanding of the origin and distribution of this emission. Balloon-borne instruments have made important measurements of gamma-ray continuum and line emission from SN 1987A. The GRIS spectrometer unambiguously resolved the 847 and 1238 keV line emission from radioactive Co-56 synthesized during the explosion. This data indicated that simple spherically symmetric and homogeneous models did not provide an adequate description of the expanding SN shell.

    Description: The Arthur Holly Compton Gamma Ray Observatory Compton) is the second in NASA's series of great Observatories. Launched on 1991 April 5, Compton represents a dramatic increase in capability over previous gamma-ray missions. The spacecraft and scientific instruments are all in good health, and many significant discoveries have already been made. We describe the capabilities of the four scientific instruments, and the observing program of the first 2 years of the mission. Examples of early discoveries by Compton are enumerated, including the discovery that gamma-ray bursts are isotropic but spatially inhomogeneous in their distribution; the discovery of a new class of high-energy extragalacatic gamma-ray sources, the gamma-ray AGNs; the discovery of emission from SN 1987A in the nuclear line of Co-57; and the mapping of emission from Al-26 in the interstellar medium (ISM) near the Galactic center. Future observations will include deep surveys of selected regions of the sky, long-tem studies of individual objects, correlative studies of objects at gamma-ray and other energies, a Galactic plane survey at intermediate gamma-ray energies, and improved statistics on gamma-ray bursts to search for small anisotropies. After completion of the all-sky survey, a Guest Investigator program is in progress with guest observers' time share increasing from 30% upward for the late mission phases.

    Description: The existence of an intense narrow electron/position annihilation line from the direction of the Galactic center is unquestioned; however, the source of the positrons remains a mystery. It is believed the line emisssion has two components: one compact at or near the Galactic center, and the other extended in the equatorial plane of the Galaxy. A compact component is suggested by several reports of intensity variations, including one from our group based on HEAO 3 data. Since the original HEAO 3 analysis, our algorithms have been greatly improved and we have gained a much better understanding of systematic effects which could influence the results. Given the importance of the result and the significantly improved analysis techniques now avaiable, the data have been reanalyzed. For a single point source at the Galactic center, the revised line intensities are (1.25 +/- 0.18) x 10(exp -3) photons cm(exp -2) s(exp -1) for the fall of 1979 and (0.99 +/- 0.18) x 10(exp 3) photons cm(exp -2) x(exp -1) for the spring of 1980.

    Description: The history of the Pluto ephemerides created at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is given. The uncertainties of present and possible future ephemerides are illustrated, and it is shown how rapidly the error grows for any present-day ephemeris of Pluto which is extrapolated into the future--tens of thousands of kilometers after only a decade. Continuing the observations into the future not only will reduce the extrapolation time but will provide a substantial improvement to the ephemeris itself.

    Description: We report the results of five Moonwatches, in which more than 2000 observers throughout North America attempted to sight the thin lunar crescent. For each Moonwatch we were able to determine the position of the Lunar Date Line (LDL), the line along which a normal observer has a 50% probability of spotting the Moon. The observational LDLs were then compared with predicted LDLs derived from crescent visibility prediction algorithms. We find that ancient and medieval rules are higly unreliable. More recent empirical criteria, based on the relative altitude and azimuth of the Moon at the time of sunset, have a reasonable accuracy, with the best specific formulation being due to Yallop. The modern theoretical model by Schaefer (based on the physiology of the human eye and the local observing conditions) is found to have the least systematic error, the least average error, and the least maximum error of all models tested. Analysis of the observations also provided information about atmospheric, optical and human factors that affect the observations. We show that observational lunar calendars have a natural bias to begin early.

    Description: The natural approach to a spectral analysis of data distributed on the sky employs spherical harmonic decomposition. A common problem encountered in practical astronomy is the lack of full sky coverage in the available data. For example, the removal of the Galactic plane data from the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) Differential Microwave Radiometer (DMR) sky maps compromises Fourier analysis of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature distribution due to the loss of orthogonality of the spherical harmonics. An explicit method for constructing orthonormal functions on an incomplete (e.g., Galaxy-cut) sphere is presented. These functions should be used in the proper Fourier analysis of the COBE DMR sky maps to provide the correct input for the determination of the spectrum of primordial inhomogeneity. The results of such an analysis are presented in an accompanying Letter. A similar algebraic construction of appropriate functions can be devised for other astronomical applications.

    Description: Results are presented from a computer simulation in which dust grains of three different sizes were released at perihelion passage from each of (1) 15 main belt asteroids, (2) 15 short-period comets with perihelion greater than 1 AU, and (3) 5 such comets with perihelion less than 1 AU. The evolving-orbit calculations for each of the dust rains include the effects of solar and planetary gravity, radiation pressure, Poynting-Robertson drag, and solar wind drag. It is noted that when dust grains evolve to intersection with the earth's orbit, they retain orbital characteristics indicative of their origins.

    Description: Latest observations by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are described, including the first 'parallel' observations (on January 6, 1992) by the two of the Hubble's instruments of two different targets at the same time. On this date, the faint-object camera made images of the quasar 3C 273 in Virgo, while the wide-field and planetary camera recorded an adjacent field. The new HST images include those of the nucleus and the jet of M85, the giant elliptical galaxy at the heart of the Virgo cluster, and what appears to be a black hole of mass 2.6 billion solar masses in M87, and an image of N66, a planetary nebula in the LMC. Other images yield evidence of 'blue stragglers' in the core of 47 Tucanae, a globular cluster about 16,000 light-years from earth. The Goddard spectrograph recorded the spectrum of the star Capella at very high wavelength resolution, which made it possible to measure deuterium from the Big Bang.

Also presented are definitions of rotational elements and the cartographic coordinate systems.     Description: Photoelectric lightcurve observations in the V band, together with estimates of the mean and maximum reduced magnitudes, are presented for 59 different asteroids; 15 new or significantly revised periods are reported. While fits are generally good for objects with moderate phase-relation slope, poor quality fits remain among the highest and lowest albedo objects studied in virtue of their respectively shallow and steep sloping-phase curves.
