Description: The synthesis, crystal structure and spectroscopic and electronic properties of N-(2-methyl-5-nitrophenyl)-4-(pyridin-2-yl)pyrimidin-2-amine (NPPA), C16H13N5O2, a potential template for drug design against chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), is reported. The design and construction of the target molecule were carried out starting from the guanidinium nitrate salt (previously synthesized) and the corresponding enaminone. X-ray diffraction analysis and a study of the Hirshfeld surfaces revealed important interactions between the nitro-group O atoms and the H atoms of the pyridine and pyrimidine rings. A crystalline ordering in layers, by the stacking of rings through interactions of the π–π type, was observed and confirmed by a study of the shape-index surfaces and dispersion energy calculations. Quantitative electrostatic potential studies revealed the most positive value of the molecule on regions close to the N—H groups (34.8 kcal mol−1); nevertheless, steric impediments and the planarity of the molecule do not allow the formation of hydrogen bonds from this group. This interaction is however activated when the molecule takes on a new extended conformation in the active pocket of the enzyme kinase (PDB ID 2hyy), interacting with protein residues that are fundamental in the inhibition process of CML. The most negative values of the molecule are seen in regions close to the nitro group (−35.4 and −34.0 kcal mol−1). A molecular docking study revealed an energy affinity of ΔG = −10.3 kcal mol−1 for NPPA which, despite not having a more negative value than the control molecule (Imatinib; ΔG = −12.8 kcal mol−1), shows great potential to be used as a template for new drugs against CML.

Description: The present report lists selected publications on centrosymmetric compounds that manifest second harmonic generation responses in a laser, along with a few publications that dispute the laser outcomes. Two studies provide a plausible explanation for this apparent contradiction between second-order nonlinear susceptibility and inversion symmetry: the crystals are noncentrosymmetric and are twinned by inversion. If crystal structures of SHG-active compounds are presented in centrosymmetric settings, the authors of the publications may consider stipulating that the true space group is likely to be one of the noncentrosymmetric sub-space groups.

Description: A new Gd3+ coordination polymer (CP), namely, poly[diaqua[μ4-1′-carboxy-3,3′-(diazene-1,2-diyl)dibenzene-1,2,2′-tricarboxylato]gadolinium(III)], [Gd(C16H7N2O8)(H2O)2] n , (I), has been synthesized hydrothermally from Gd(NO3)3·6H2O and azobenzene-2,2′,3,3′-tetracarboxylic acid (H4abtc). The target solid has been characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and susceptibility measurements. CP (I) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The structure features a 4-connected topology in which Gd3+ ions are connected by carboxylate groups into a linear chain along the monoclinic symmetry direction. Adjacent one-dimensional aggregates are bridged by Habtc3− ligands to form a two-dimensional CP in the (10overline{1}) plane. A very short hydrogen bond [O...O = 2.4393 (4) Å] links neighbouring layers into a three-dimensional network. A magnetic study revealed antiferromagnetic Gd...Gd coupling within the chain direction. CP (I) displays a significant magnetocaloric effect (MCE), with a maximum −ΔS m of 27.26 J kg−1 K−1 for ΔH = 7 T at 3.0 K. As the MCE in (I) exceeds that of the commercial magnetic refrigerant GGG (Gd3Ga5O12, −ΔS m = 24 J kg−1 K−1, ΔH = 30 kG), CP (I) can be regarded as a potential cryogenic material for low-temperature magnetic refrigeration.

Description: The crystal structures of the hydrochloride salts of nine substituted tryptamines, namely, 1-methyltryptammonium chloride, C11H15N2 +·Cl−, (1), 2-methyl-1-phenyltryptammonium chloride, C17H19N2 +·Cl−, (2), 5-methoxytryptammonium chloride, C11H15N2O+·Cl−, (3), 5-bromotryptammonium chloride, C10H12BrN2 +·Cl−, (4), 5-chlorotryptammonium chloride, C10H12ClN2 +·Cl−, (5), 5-fluorotryptammonium chloride, C10H12FN2 +·Cl−, (6), 5-methyltryptammonium chloride, C11H15N2 +·Cl−, (7), 6-fluorotryptammonium chloride, C10H12FN2 +·Cl−, (8), and 7-methyltryptammonium chloride, C11H15N2 +·Cl−, (9), are reported. The seven tryptamines with N—H indoles, (3)–(9), show very similar structures, with N—H...Cl hydrogen-bonding networks forming two-dimensional sheets in the crystals. These sheets are combinations of R 4 2(8) and R 4 2(18) rings, and C 2 1(4) and C 2 1(9) chains. Substitution at the indole N atom reduces the dimensionality of the hydrogen-bonding network, with compounds (1) and (2) demonstrating one-dimensional chains that are a combination of different rings and parallel chains.

When utilizing the common halogen-bond-donor molecules 1,2-, 1,3-, and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene, as well as 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene, bifurcated I...S...I interactions were observed, resulting in the formation of isolated rings, chains, and sheets. Tetraiodoethylene (TIE) provided I...S...I cocrystals as well, but further yielded a sulfonium-containing product through the reaction of the S atom with TIE. This particular sulfonium motif is the first of its kind to be structurally characterized, and is stabilized in the solid state through a three-dimensional I...I halogen-bonding network. Thiourea reacted with acetone in the presence of TIE to provide two novel heterocyclic products, again stabilized in the solid state through I...I halogen bonding.

Description: Tris(diethyldithiocarbamato-κS)antimony(III), [Sb(C5H10NS2)3], is tentatively presumed to comprise a triclinic and a monoclinic polymorph intergrown into each other. The geometry in the triclinic phase is a ψ-capped octahedron and that in the monoclinic phase is a ψ-pentagonal bipyramid. The study also identifies the polyhedral symbols for a reported pair of polymorphs of another SbIII coordination compound, as well as for those of published polymorphic modifications of other BiIII and PbII coordination compounds; the symbols in the pair differ in most of these examples. When differentiating related structures of such classes of coordination compounds, lone-pair stereochemistry may be another informative variable, as stereochemical activity is not always apparent from bond distances and angles only.

Description: Formamidinatoantimony(I/III) complexes have been successfully synthesized as monomers or dimers in the solid state featuring a variety of coordination geometries and have also been comprehensively characterized. The antimony(I) formamidinate complex bis[μ-N,N′-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)formamidinato]diantimony(I)(2 Sb—Sb) tetrahydrofuran heptasolvate, [Sb2(C25H35N2)2]·7C4H8O or [Sb2(DippForm)2]·7THF, (1), was obtained by a metathesis reaction between sodium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide [NaN(SiMe3)2] and N,N′-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)formamidine (DippFormH), followed by SbCl3. A range of trivalent haloformamidinatoantimony(III) complexes, namely, bis[N,N′-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)formamidinato]chloridoantimony(III), [Sb(C25H35N2)2Cl] or [Sb(DippForm)2Cl], (2), bis[N,N′-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)formamidinato]bromidoantimony(III), [SbBr(C25H35N2)2] or [SbBr(DippForm)2], (3), bis[N,N′-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)formamidinato]iodidoantimony(III), [Sb(C25H35N2)2I] or [Sb(DippForm)2I], (4), [N,N′-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)formamidinato]dibromidoantimony(III), [SbBr2(C25H35N2)] or [SbBr2(DippForm)], (5), and [N,N′-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)formamidinato]diiodidoantimony(III), [Sb(C25H35N2)I2] or [Sb(DippForm)I2], (6), were also synthesized by adding DippFormH and MN(SiMe3)2 (M = Li or Na) to the corresponding antimony halides SbX 3 (X = Cl, Br or I) in differing ratios. The complexes were all stable to rearrangement.

Description: The formation and crystal structure of a hydrated molecular salt that results in a square network is reported. The crystalline solid is based upon the tetraprotonated photoproduct rtct-tetrakis(pyridin-4-yl)cyclobutane (4H- rtct -TPCB)4+ along with two sulfate anions (SO4 2−) and eight waters of hydration, namely, 4,4′,4′′,4′′′-(cyclobutane-1,2,3,4-tetrayl)tetrapyridinium bis(sulfate) octahydrate, C24H24N4 4+·2SO4 2−·8H2O. The fully protonated photoproduct acts as a four-connecting node within the square network by engaging in four charge-assisted N+—H...O hydrogen bonds to the sulfate anion. The observed hydrogen-bonding pattern in this square network is akin to T-silica, which is a metastable form of SiO2. The included water molecules and sulfate anions engage in numerous O—H...O hydrogen bonds to form various hydrogen-bonded ring structures.

Description: Quinine (an antimalarial) and aspirin (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) were combined into a new drug–drug salt, quininium aspirinate, C20H25N2O2 +·C9H7O4 −, by liquid-assisted grinding using stoichiometric amounts of the reactants in a 1:1 molar ratio, and water, EtOH, toluene, or heptane as additives. A tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution of the mechanochemical product prepared using EtOH as additive led to a single crystal of the same material obtained by mechanochemistry, which was used for crystal structure determination at 100 K. Powder X-ray diffraction ruled out crystallographic phase transitions in the 100–295 K interval. Neat mechanical treatment (in a mortar and pestle, or in a ball mill at 20 or 30 Hz milling frequencies) gave rise to an amorphous phase, as shown by powder X-ray diffraction; however, FT–IR spectroscopy unambiguously indicates that a mechanochemical reaction has occurred. Neat milling the reactants at 10 and 15 Hz led to incomplete reactions. Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry indicate that the amorphous and crystalline mechanochemical products form glasses/supercooled liquids before melting, and do not recrystallize upon cooling. However, the amorphous material obtained by neat grinding crystallizes upon storage into the salt reported. The mechanochemical synthesis, crystal structure analysis, Hirshfeld surfaces, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, FT–IR spectroscopy, and aqueous solubility of quininium aspirinate are herein reported.

Description: A series of luminescent cocrystals with fluoranthene (C16H10) as the fluorophore and benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarbonitrile (TCNB, C10H2N4), 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene-1,4-dicarbonitrile (TFP, C8F4N2) and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octafluoronaphthalene (OFN, C10F8) as the coformers was designed and synthesized. Structure analysis revealed that these layered structures were due to charge transfer, π–π interactions and hydrogen bonding. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that fluoranthene–TCNB and fluoranthene–TFP have charge-transfer properties, while fluoranthene–OFN does not, indicating that fluoranthene–OFN has arene–perfluoroarene (AP) interactions, which was also demonstrated by spectroscopic analysis, which shows that the photophysical properties of luminescent materials can be tuned by forming cocrystals. These results all prove that utilizing supramolecular cocrystals to develop new fluorescent materials is an effective strategy, which has much potential in optoelectronic applications.
