Beschreibung: Albedo – the reflectivity of a surface - is an important component in the energy budget, impacting the local to global climate. Data from nadir-viewing satellites can be combined with bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) data from multi-angular observation platforms to achieve realistic albedo values that acknowledge anisotropy. In my thesis, I evaluated how the land surface albedo varied on spatial and temporal scales during the snow-free period on Disko Island, Greenland. I examined how the albedo differed among the vegetation classes. Concerning the methodology, I assessed how the combination of MODIS BRDF data with Landsat 8 (L8) or Sentinel-2 (S2) influenced the albedo. The study area was located at the southern tip of Disko Island (69.27 °N, -53.47 °E) in West Greenland and covered a wetland and a range of tundra vegetation. I analysed automatic weather station (AWS) data from 2013 to 2022 and conducted mobile albedo measurements in August and September 2022 to examine the temporal and spatial variability. For the period from June to September 2022, I derived the L8 and S2 based albedo with inclusion of MODIS BRDF and narrow to broadband conversion and analysed their variability with regard to vegetation classes. In the snow-free period, the albedo increased from a monthly mean of 0.16 in June to 0.19 in September in the AWS data. The mobile measurements ranged from 〈 0.10 above bare soil and water to 〉 0.23 above areas dominated by lichen, Salix glauca or Equisetum arvense. The satellite-based albedo revealed temporally variable, significant correlations to normalised difference vegetation and moisture indices that reached values 〉 0.5 in the fen and wet heath class on several days. The albedo of shrubs was not notably smaller than other vegetation types but partly 0.01-0.05 above them in both the mobile measurements and the satellite-derived albedo. This finding challenges the assumption that shrubification causes climate forcing in all circumstances. The albedo of L8 and S2 differed to each other and the local data (root-mean-square error 0.04-0.14). The BRDF correction increased the albedo by 0.01 on average compared to nadir reflectance. L8 was better in reproducing the expected temporal and spatial variability of albedo than S2, which displayed less variability. S2 seemed to be more sensitive to atmospheric effects of haze and clouds influencing albedo. Thus, L8 seemed more suitable to calculate albedo in the study area. Though there were some methodological limitations, this thesis highlights aspects that should be considered when analysing albedo or jointly using L8 and S2 in high latitude regions.

Beschreibung: Highlights • Development of an autonomous DIC analyzer based on Conductometric technique using a cell with 4 hollow brass electrodes. • CO2 extraction from seawater using a gas diffusion cell with a “Tube In A Tube” configuration and a gas permeable membrane. • Formulation of mathematical temperature and salinity correction to determine accurate DIC concentration. • Demonstration of the analyzer performance in the southwest Baltic Sea. Abstract Background The increase in anthropogenic CO2 concentrations in the Earth's atmosphere since the industrial revolution has resulted in an increased uptake of CO2 by the oceans, leading to ocean acidification. Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) is one of the key variables to characterize the seawater carbonate system. High quality DIC observations at a high spatial-temporal resolution is required to improve our understanding of the marine carbonate system. To meet the requirements, autonomous DIC analyzers are needed which offer a high sampling frequency, are cost-effective and have a low reagent and power consumption. Results We present the development and validation of a novel analyzer for autonomous measurements of DIC in seawater using conductometric detection. The analyzer employs a gas diffusion sequential injection approach in a “Tube In A Tube” configuration that facilitates diffusion of gaseous CO2 from an acidified sample through a gas permeable membrane into a stream of an alkaline solution. The change in conductivity in the alkaline medium is proportional to the DIC concentration of the sample and is measured using a detection cell constructed of 4 hollow brass electrodes. Physical and chemical optimizations of the analyzer yielded a sampling frequency of 4 samples h−1 using sub mL reagent volumes for each measurement. Temperature and salinity effects on DIC measurements were mathematically corrected to increase accuracy. Analytical precision of ±4.9 μmol kg−1 and ±9.7 μmol kg−1 were achieved from measurements of a DIC reference material in the laboratory and during a field deployment in the southwest Baltic Sea, respectively. Significance This study describes a simple, cost-effective, autonomous, on-site benchtop DIC analyzer capable of measuring DIC in seawater at a high temporal resolution as a step towards an underwater DIC sensor. The analyzer is able to measure a wide range of DIC concentrations in both fresh and marine waters. The achieved accuracy and precision offer an excellent opportunity to employ the analyzer for ocean acidification studies and CO2 leakage detection in the context of Carbon Capture and Storage operations.

Beschreibung: Geochemical study of volcaniclastic material and radiocarbon dating of charred plant debris from Holocene deposits of the Guram site, which is located in vicinity of Vetrovoi Isthmus on Iturup Island, demonstrate that an explosive eruption (VEI 4-5) occurred there about 2000 years ago. The geochemical and age similarity with the tephra of marker layer CKr that was distinguished on Iturup, Urup, Simushir, Rasshua, and Matua islands of the Kuril Island Arc led to the conclusion that this eruption is possibly a source of this tephra. The data presented are proposed as a motivation for revision of the volcanic hazard on Iturup Island.

Beschreibung: Der Biodiversitätsverlust schreitet in bedrohlichem Ausmaß voran.

Beschreibung: A natural plankton community from oligotrophic subtropical waters of the Atlantic near Gran Canaria, Spain, was subjected to varying degrees of ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) to assess the potential physiological effects, in the context of the application of ocean carbon dioxide removal (CDR) techniques. We employed 8.3 m3 mesocosms with a sediment trap attached to the bottom, creating a gradient in total alkalinity (TA). The lowest point on this gradient was 2400 μmol · L-1, which corresponded to the natural alkalinity of the environment, and the highest point was 4800 μmol · L-1. Over the course of the 33-day experiment, the plankton community exhibited two distinct phases. In phase-I (days 5–20), a notable decline in the photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) was observed. This change was accompanied by substantial reductions in the abundances of picoeukaryotes, small size nanoeukaryotes (nanoeukaryotes-1), and microplankton. The cell viability of picoeukaryotes, as indicated by fluorescein-di-acetate hydrolysis by cellular esterases (FDA- green fluorescence), slightly increased by the end of phase-I whilst the viability of nanoeukaryotes 1 and Synechococcus spp . did not change. Reactive oxygen species levels (ROS-green fluorescence) showed no significant changes for any of the functional groups. In contrast, in phase-II (days 21–33), a pronounced community response was observed. Increases in Fv/Fm in the intermediate OAE treatments of ∆900 to ∆1800 μmol · L-1 and in chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), chlorophyll-c2 (Chl-c2) , fucoxanthin and divinyl-Chl-a were attributed to the emergence of blooms of large size nanoeukaryotes (nanoeukaryotes-2) from the genera Chrysochromulina, as well as picoeukaryotes. Synechococcus spp. also flourished towards the end of this phase. In parallel, we observed a total 20 % significant change in the metaproteome of the phytoplankton community. This is considered a significant alteration in protein expression, having substantial impacts on cellular functions and the physiology of the organisms. Medium levels of ∆TA showed more upregulated and less downregulated proteins than higher ∆TA treatments. Under these conditions, cell viability significantly increased in pico and nanoeukaryotes-1 in intermediate alkalinity levels, while in Synechococcus spp., nanoeukaryotes-2 and microplankton remained stable. ROS levels did not significantly change in any functional group. The pigment ratios DD+DT : FUCO, and DD+DT : Chl-a increased in medium ∆TA treatments, supporting the idea of nutrient deficiency alleviation and the absence of physiological stress. Taken all data together, this study shows that there is minimal evidence indicating a harmful impact of high alkalinity on the plankton community. The OAE treatments did not result in physiological fitness impairment, thus OAE did not cause cellular stress in the phytoplankton community studied.

Beschreibung: In the northeastern tropical Atlantic, a region of high potential vorticity (PV) determines the size of the exchange window for the interior thermocline flow of the subtropical cell via its variations in strength and extent. Variability of this PV barrier has the potential to impact the ventilation of the tropical Atlantic on decadal timescales. Here, the impact of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on the PV barrier related to isopycnals within the thermocline of the subtropical-tropical Atlantic Ocean is assessed from Argo observations for the time period of 2006-2022. Relative to the negative NAO phase (2009-2010), during the positive NAO phase (2014-2019), the North Atlantic subtropical high and the northeast trades are intensified. Satellite-derived wind stress curl shows increased upwelling/downwelling on the equatorward/poleward side of the trade wind zone, respectively. In the subtropical-tropical Atlantic, a symmetric pattern of isopycnal heave is observed: rising isopycnals within 20 degrees N and 20 degrees S and sinking poleward of that. With rising isopycnals, the PV barrier in the northeastern tropical Atlantic becomes stronger. Analyses of geostrophic velocities and the Sverdrup streamfunction show that during the positive NAO phase there are increased equatorward velocities at thermocline level along the western boundary and reduced velocities through the interior as a result of intensified northeast trades and therefore a strengthened PV barrier. Intensified trades lead to enhanced subduction of thermocline waters and, independent of that, to a strengthened Equatorial Undercurrent transport as observed at the mooring site at 0 degrees, 23 degrees W, likely via the pulling effect of the subtropical cells. In the North Atlantic Ocean, subducted water from the subtropics has two possible pathways within the thermocline toward the equatorial region: the interior pathway and the pathway along the western boundary. The size of the exchange window between subtropics and tropics depends on the extent of a barrier zone in the eastern part of the basin that is associated with wind-driven upwelling of density surfaces. The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the dominant atmospheric climate mode in the North Atlantic and in this study, we show how the NAO impacts the barrier for the equatorward thermocline flow in the tropical Atlantic Ocean. During positive NAO phases (e.g., 2014-2019), density surfaces become shallower and strengthen the barrier, while during negative NAO phases (e.g., 2009-2010) the barrier weakens. Geostrophic velocity analysis reveals that during positive NAO phases more thermocline water is transported equatorward via the western boundary and less via the interior pathway. Additionally, observations from a mooring site at 0 degrees, 23 degrees W show stronger Equatorial Undercurrent transport as a result of intensified trade winds during positive NAO phases. Trade winds in the northeastern tropical Atlantic strengthen during positive phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO+) Potential vorticity barrier for the interior equatorward thermocline flow of the North Atlantic Subtropical Cell strengthens during NAO+ Annual subduction of thermocline water and Equatorial Undercurrent transport increase simultaneously from 2008 to 2018
