Description: Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt die Kalkdinoflagellaten-Floren aus dem Alb der Forschungsbohrung Kirchrode II (Niedersächsisches Becken).
Description: Subject of this study are the calcareous dinoflagellates cysts of the drilling core Kirchrode II (Albian, central Lower Saxony Basin, Northwest Germany). The purpose of this investigation is to give answers to the question of the poorly understood palaeoecology of this important phytopankton group at the time of its maximum radiation. Cyst assemblages were examined qualitatively and semi-quantitatively. Diversity analyses of the cyst assemblages were carried out as well. The results were compared with other lithological and palaeontological data of the drilling core. 37 morphotaxa were identified. Together with the morphospecies recorded from the uppermost Upper Albian of the drilling core Kirchrode I (KEUPP 1995), the number of documented taxa in the Albian of the Lower Saxonian Basin increases to 45 taxa. The first appearance date of the suborder Pithonelloidae is recognised in the lower Middle-Albian (Hoplites dentatus-zone). Moreover, the distribution of the Fuettererelloideae in the Lower Cretaceous is documented for the first time. The taxonomic compositions of the cyst assemblages change through time. Due to their different ecological preferences, 4 typical cysts-assemblages were recognised. The composition of the assemblages was controlled chiefly by nutrient availability, salinity and temperature of the surface water-masses. Together with the re-examined cyst-assemblages of the drilling-core Kirchrode I, the assemblages reflect a sea level rise during the Early and Middle Albian, together with simultaneous warming and nutrient decrease. A postulated sea level highstand (maximum pelagicity) in the Late Albian is followed by a rapid regression in the upper dispar-zone. Data from other plankton groups (coccolithophorids, foraminiferes and radiolarians) support this interpretation. The palaeoecology of the Early Cretaceous Orthopithonelloideae is newly interpreted. They were not, as supposed until now, components of the pelagic realm. On the contrary, their distribution reflects neritic, nutrient-rich and probably cool surface-water masses. Within the Obliquipithonelloids with coarse-crystalline body walls, Pirumella loeblichi holds an exceptional position with respect to its deviating ecology (preference for stagnant and nutrient-rich basin conditions). 6 distinct migration-events of cysts with tethyal origin were recognised. These events are probably related to transgressive pulses. The methods of community and diversity analyses, used for the first time for this little known phytoplankton group, are a powerful tool for the analyses of paleoecological distribution patterns of the group and can be used for paleooceanic basin interpretation.

Description: Die "höheren" Caenogastropoden umfassen viele tausend rezente und fossile Arten.
Description: The "higher" caenogastropods are represented by many thousand Recent and fossil species. Their characteristical shells can usually be well recognized and are frequently found particularly in marine Cenozoic deposits, thus offering excellent possibilities in respect of correlating neontological and palaeontological studies. Aim of such studies is here to trace evolution in order to obtain a basis for interpretation and actual insights respectively A more or less "holistic" approach was chosen, which translates the synthesis of conchological, anatomical, molecular genetical, reproductive biological, ecological and biogeographical data into the past and thus regarding evolution in the context of geodynamics. This approach is labelled palaeobiological conception. The different avenues of research led to the following results: the "higher" caenogastropods are very probably monophyletic and are classified as superorder Latrogastropoda nov The order Neomesogastropoda is paraphyletic because it includes the stem lineage of the Neogastropoda. It becomes apparent that many of the evolutionary lineages, which can be well defined by neontological means, are not yet correspondingly recognized in the fossil record and therefore are rooted in a systematic vacuum. The phylogenetic gaps can be defined or considered respectively by analyzing the direction of the evolution of morphological characters, which e.g. allows the creation of hypothetical fossils, which can be searched for Based upon the phylogenetic analyses, the necessity of a far-reaching revision of the classification became evident and consequently was conducted. The origin of the Latrogastropoda nov could be found in a lineage, which also leads to the stem-lineage of the Rissoidae. The latter and the potential latrogastropod Maturifusus both appeared in the Jurassic for the first time. First significant radiations of the Latrogastropoda nov correlated with the postneokomian global wanning and corresponding tropical climate of the Tethys ocean. During the early Upper Cretaceous the Latrogastropoda nov experienced key innovations which promoted the differentiation into their main lineages. The turn to the Cenozoic was accompanied by the systematic uprootal of taxa which persist in the modem fauna, which means that many stem-lineages (to be defined in detail) have not been detected in the Cenozoic. The Cenozoic evolution of latrogastropods is characterized by extreme Eocene and Miocene radiations. Neogene suprageneric systematic units show already great morphological correspondence with their Recent counterparts. Therefore the relatively strong change of palaeobiogeographic relations in the Neogene is not mirrored by principal evolutionary innovations.

Description: The investigation is based on 1500 ammonoids with sublethal injuries. The observed ammonoids are Lower Toarcian (from Southern Germany / Southern France / England), Upper Callovian (from Normandy / France) and Upper Oxfordian (Madagascar). The selected ammonoid fauna represents a wide spectre of morphotypes. The healing pattern following the injuries of ammonoids have been subject to observation for a long time. The most successful model of a classification of these phenomena dates back to HÖLDER (1956). But the model of Hölder lacks a clearly defined framework for setting up a new forma aegra. For that reason many overlapping, confuse and useless forma types have been introduced. These investigation suggests a stringent principle of classification and calls for a comprehensive classification according to these principle. Following these premise, the current inventory of forma types is discussed. It is proposed to give up the terms forma seccata (HÖLDER 1956), forma refecta (REIN 1994a), forma undaticarinata-undaticoncha (HENGSBACH 1996) and forma mordata (HENGSBACH 1996). The forma-types forma augata n.f. and forma umbilicata n.f. are newly defined. Durophagous fishes (mainly Lepidotes, Dapedium and Mesturus), crustaceans (mainly Eryma and Mecochirus) and coleoids are found to be responsible for the sublethal shell breakages. Eryonid crustaceans (Coleia, Proeryon, Eryori) are most probably responsible of the healed damages of the mantle epithelia of the peristome (forma verticata, Hölder 1956). In almost all cases it is impossible to detect distinct predators by individual injuries. The character and shape of the shell breakage is defined mainly by the morphology of the shell. Three traits of the ammonoid shell are sensitive against predatory attacks: The morphology of the shell, the extension of the living chamber and the sculpture. Dactylioceratids and Perisphinctids which are longidome roughly ornamented morphotypes with a strong sculpture, a low whorl expansion and a subcircular area of aperture, are best armed against durophagous agressors. Instead Harpoceratids and Hecticoceratids, which are mesodome morphotypes with a smooth sculpture and high whorl expansion, are less armed by their shell. The longidome Dactylioceratids and Perisphinctids where in contrast to the meso- and brevidome morphotypes able to withdraw deeply in their shell. These relatively plump morphotypes tolerated an eccentric growth of the whorl (in rare cases a consequence of injury) much better than the discus-shaped Harpoceratids. Ammonoids in general tolerated a shell lost caused by a predatory attack much better than the recent Nautilus. The observed ammonoids where able to regenerate a maximal shell loss of 10-20 %. In the recent Nautilus a shell loss of more than 4 % is lethal. Under the assumption of a nearly neutral buoyant habit in life that gives evidence of a much higher efficiency of the buoyancy apparatus of the ammonoids. The traits supposed to be functional are shown to be real aptations by the frequency of multiple injuries. Multiple injuries are a good proxy of the vulnerability of the observed ammonoids. Instead the frequency of all healed injuries don’t correlate with the vulnerability but seems to be controlled mainly by the probability of a contact with a predator These factor is otherwise controlled by the habit of the ammonoids.

Description: Environmental changes occur at a global level and are enhanced by human activities, with significant impacts on natural ecosystems by affecting the temperature, nutrient load and input of organic debris in freshwater bodies or aquatic systems. In the first section, we investigated the impacts of increased temperature, nutrient input, predation by fish and a reduction in organic detritus on the community of testate amoebae, rotifers and periphytic cladocerans over 49 experimental days. The second section analyzed the effects of increased temperature, nutrient input and reduced organic detritus on the testate amoeba community during 160 experimental days. The experiments were carried out in mesocosms with three temperature conditions: control (referring to the ambient temperature), constant increase of +4°C and fluctuation between 2°C and 6°C above the control, with and without enrichment by nitrogen and phosphorus, and reduction of organic detritus, controlled by previous additions of this detritus. In relation to the results of the first section, the density of the groups analyzed was significantly impacted by the increase in temperature, while the other stressors explored in this work did not represent a significant influence on the abundance of the communities. As for community composition, the presence of nutrients had a more predominant impact on community structure, although specific species distribution patterns were not identified. For the second section, it was evident that warming resulted in a reduction in species diversity (demonstrated by the Shannon index), with a tendency for species richness to decrease in the face of this stressor. On the other hand, nutrient enrichment was responsible for an increase in richness, with time being a relevant factor in this context. As for changes in community density, nutrients and time emerged as the main factors influencing these changes. Analysis of species diversity using the Shannon index revealed greater diversity in the temperature control treatments, with time exerting a significant influence on community structure throughout the experiment. For species composition, the βtotal diversity analysis highlighted the importance of temperature, presence of detritus and time. The βrepl and βrich components were notably affected by temperature and time, indicating changes in species identity.

Description: Streams, small rivers, are endowed with exclusive energetic dynamics: decomposition of allochthonous material, and formation of microhabitats and ecotones between aquatic communities and riparian vegetation. Regarding this input of organic matter, aquatic fungi make up most of the biomass of organic matter decomposers, they are biomineralizers of foliar nutrients and through decomposition link the matter to the entire trophic network. Aquatic fungi are a polyphyletic group adapted to this environment, and have different taxonomic levels grouped together. These microorganisms are the target of ecological studies due to their important, still their spatial distribution still lacks elucidation, as well as the influence of limnological on biotic parameters. The fungal communities, composition and beta diversity, were investigated in this study separated into two approaches: i) the beta diversity of aquatic fungi in streams under different land uses; ii) the nesting of fungal eDNA sequences in a protected area and an impacted area. The biotic data were obtained from leaf mixes, and represent the biodiversity of the aquatic FUNGA present in streams of the Atlantic Forest, being pioneering studies for the subtropical region. Furthermore, the results may contribute as a basis for future studies within the mycology of aquatic environments. Approach I, in a taxonomic approach, demonstrated fungal diversity in presence of ambiental heterogeneity. Approach II, through metabarcoding, demonstrates the sensitivity of the use of genomic databases in ecological analyses. The results presented here reinforce the need for management and conservation plans for riparian vegetation, which forms the aquatic microecosystem, used by fungi for their decomposition and other ecosystem functions.

Description: ENGLISH ----------------In aquaculture, biosecurity deals with the management of aquatic animals’ health and to reducing risks to public health issues associated with the production and consumption of aquaculture products. In particular, diseases are a matter of care in every animal husbandry and production systems. In Cuban aquaculture, one of the most important fish species is the African catfish Clarias gariepinus. This introduced species is affected by parasitic protozoa of the family Trichodinidae during the first stages of its life cycle. The present work was outlined as objective, to identify and characterize the species of tricodinids that affect the C. gariepinus cultivation in La Juventud fingerling station, Provincia Pinar del Río, Cuba. The identified and characterized species were Trichodina heterodentata, T. acuta and T. merciae, which are considered biohazards for the culture of this fish. These results constitute the first step to develop a risk analysis that guarantees adequate management of biosecurity in aquaculture stations.

Description: Multispecies fish fisheries in Cuba include about 150 species, different fishing gears used simultaneously and a large number of landing ports, which makes monitoring and assessment of these resources difficult, and management has been limited. We therefore set out to evaluate the current status, as well as future trade-offs in biomass, catch and earnings of the most vulnerable species under different management strategies. The Catch-MSY method was used to estimate the current status, and a bioeconomic model was used to make long-term projections of the outputs. The stocks studied are depleted, and most of them have values that imply a high risk for the sustainability of their populations. In addition, most are overexploited and suffering illegal fishing. However, in the long term, under sustainable management strategies, they show opportunities for recovery and economically profitable fisheries, provided that illegal fishing is eliminated and economic incentives are applied.

Description: In the last few years, several works have analyzed rainfall regime changes with the increase of temperature as a result of global warming. These changes, documented mainly in northern Europe, still need to be clarified in the Mediterranean area. Many studies have identified sometimes contradictory trends according to the type of data used, the methodology, and the daily or subdaily types of events. Therefore, an in-depth investigation of the Mediterranean area is required for the definition of more certain future scenarios. In this study, we examined a very large database including 〉1000 raingauges and thermometers in northern and central Italy to analyze the relationship between temperature and rainfall using the relation Clausius-Clapeyron. Furthermore, we analyzed the relationship between temperature and extreme precipitation events (EPEs, defined as the events higher than the 95th percentile) calculating the temperature anomalies occurred during these events. This large database covers a low rainfall accumulation period (RAP) that allowed us to study the relationship between temperature and rainfall and to distinguish rapid from long events related to rainfall intensity. The results show different relationships between rainfall and temperature in relation to seasons, RAPs, rainfall intensity, and geographical factors. The high spatial density of the database made it possible to identify spatial clusters with homogenous characteristics mainly influenced by geographical factors. With an increase in temperature, the wet season is characterized by a general increase in rainfall with a higher surge for intense and fast events. Instead, the dry season shows a general rainfall decrease for less intense and longer events, but an increase in rapid and more intensive rainfall events. This outcome has further implications involving a future decrease in water availability and an increase of the EPEs, causing an extremization of the climate during the dry season for northern and central Italy.
