    Beschreibung: Understanding the magmatic processes that drive unrest at silicic calderas remains a major goal in Volcanology. Rabaul in Papua New Guinea is an exceptional location because after two decades of unrest and a peak in seismicity and deformation in 1983–85, eruptive activity began in 1994 and is still ongoing. A particularly large sub-Plinian eruption occurred from Tavurvur in October 2006. Whole-rock compositions are andesitic and reflect mixing/mingling between basaltic and dacitic magmas from the same system. The magmas that fed the 2006 eruption were stored at about 930°C, with 1–3 wt% H 2 O, 25–520 ppm CO 2 , and 50–2500 ppm SO 2 in the melt. Melt inclusions hosted in pyroxene, and plagioclase phenocrysts record fractional crystallization at ≤200 MPa under relatively dry and poorly oxidizing conditions. Magma mixing/mingling is expressed as heterogeneous glass compositions, strongly zoned phenocrysts, and mafic crystal aggregates. A textural maturation from fine, acicular to large, blocky crystal clots implies different relative ages of formation. Modelling the chemical zoning of plagioclase shows that mafic–silicic interactions started a couple of decades prior to the 2006 eruption and continued until days to weeks prior to eruption. Basaltic replenishments have been driving unrest and eruption at the Rabaul caldera since the 1970s.     Beschreibung: Methane is an important greenhouse gas contributing to the global climate change leading to global warming and livestock accounts as one of the major sources of methane emission. Although, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has developed guidelines to quantify emissions from enteric fermentation and manure management, it is recently reported that the National methane emission in U.S. is underestimated by a factor of 1.5–1.7. This study estimated the emission of methane in Mexico based on the animal census data from 2012. On an average, the total livestock in Mexico produced about 344 275 t·d −1 of animal manure. Further, a manure map of different states of Mexico was developed, and their potential methane emission was estimated. It is calculated that the total methane emission from enteric fermentation and manure is about 40 447.68 and 1307.04 Gg CO 2 Eq., respectively. In the case of animal manures, beef and swine manures, respectively, contributed about 47% and 27% of total methane emission. Based on the data obtained, the bioenergy potential of Mexico by way of manure treatment using anaerobic digestion was calculated and is approximately 5910.35 TJ, which can generate 410.41 GWh of electricity and reduce emissions of methane by 2240.64 Gg CO 2 Eq. The data clearly suggest that anaerobic digestion is a sustainable technology, not only for generation of renewable bioenergy but also for significant reduction in methane emission from animal manures.

    Beschreibung: Analysis of tetrapod footprints and skeletal material from more than 70 localities in eastern North America shows that large theropod dinosaurs appeared less than 10,000 years after the Triassic-Jurassic boundary and less than 30,000 years after the last Triassic taxa, synchronous with a terrestrial mass extinction. This extraordinary turnover is associated with an iridium anomaly (up to 285 parts per trillion, with an average maximum of 141 parts per trillion) and a fern spore spike, suggesting that a bolide impact was the cause.     Beschreibung: During spontaneous imbibition, a wetting liquid is drawn into a porous medium by capillary forces. In systems with comparable pore length and diameter, such as paper and sand, the front of the propagating liquid forms a continuous interface. Sections of this interface advance in a highly correlated manner due to an effective surface tension, which restricts front broadening. Here we investigate water imbibition in a nanoporous glass (Vycor) in which the pores are much longer than they are wide. In this case, no continuous liquid–vapor interface with coalesced menisci can form. Anomalously fast imbibition front roughening is experimentally observed by neutron imaging. We propose a theoretical pore-network model, whose structural details are adapted to the microscopic pore structure of Vycor glass and show that it displays the same large-scale roughening characteristics as observed in the experiment. The model predicts that menisci movements are uncorrelated, indicating that despite the connectivity of the network the smoothening effect of surface tension on the imbibition front roughening is negligible. These results suggest a new universality class of imbibition behavior, which is expected to occur in any matrix with elongated, interconnected pores of random radii.

    Beschreibung: Global ocean temperatures rapidly warmed by ~5°C during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ~56 million years ago). Extratropical sea surface temperatures (SSTs) met or exceeded modern subtropical values. With these warm extratropical temperatures, climate models predict tropical SSTs 〉35°C—near upper physiological temperature limits for many organisms. However, few data are available to test these projected extreme tropical temperatures or their potential lethality. We identify the PETM in a shallow marine sedimentary section deposited in Nigeria. On the basis of planktonic foraminiferal Mg/Ca and oxygen isotope ratios and the molecular proxy TEX86H , latest Paleocene equatorial SSTs were ~33°C, and TEX86H indicates that SSTs rose to 〉36°C during the PETM. This confirms model predictions on the magnitude of polar amplification and refutes the tropical thermostat theory. We attribute a massive drop in dinoflagellate abundance and diversity at peak warmth to thermal stress, showing that the base of tropical food webs is vulnerable to rapid warming.

    Beschreibung: The LAMTOR [late endosomal and lysosomal adaptor and MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) and mTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin) activator] complex, also known as "Ragulator," controls the activity of mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) on the lysosome. The crystal structure of LAMTOR consists of two roadblock/LC7 domain–folded heterodimers wrapped and apparently held together by LAMTOR1, which assembles the complex on lysosomes. In addition, the Rag guanosine triphosphatases (GTPases) associated with the pentamer through their carboxyl-terminal domains, predefining the orientation for interaction with mTORC1. In vitro reconstitution and experiments with site-directed mutagenesis defined the physiological importance of LAMTOR1 in assembling the remaining components to ensure fidelity of mTORC1 signaling. Functional data validated the effect of two short LAMTOR1 amino acid regions in recruitment and stabilization of the Rag GTPases.

    Notizen: This paper reviews the recent progress in the development of exposure equipment for x-ray lithography consisting of compact synchrotron radiation source, beamline, and x-ray stepper. This exposure facility is situated door by door to a CMOS-pilot line. The compact storage ring COSY, under assembly in Berlin, is described and calculations are presented, that show that relatively low accumulated current exposure times of some seconds can be expected using a highly sensitive x-ray resist. A simple, inexpensive, and highly reliable beamline has been realized to connect an x-ray stepper and a light source. Several x-ray steppers have been installed for field testing in the nearby lithography laboratory at BESSY, that are equipped with x-ray reflecting mirrors, or a scanning mask and wafer unit for full-field exposure.

    Notizen: Hole-trap states in the gate oxide of a Si metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) are investigated by inhomogeneous excimer laser irradiation. Subbandgap ultraviolet light photons with an energy exceeding a threshold lying between 5.5 and 6.4 eV were found to excite electrons from these originally neutral states into the SiO2 conduction band. A fixed positive charge is left behind. The degradation in MOSFET performance due to the irradiation is comparable to that accompanying hot-hole injection. Also, subsequent hot-electron stress changes the device characteristics in a way similar to hot-electron stress following hot-hole stress. It is concluded that the traps responsible for hot-carrier degradation cause the optically induced charge trapping.
