Notes: Summary A two-layer model of the planetary boundary layer is suggested. In the surface layer the theoretically and experimentally well studied coefficient of turbulent exchange is used. Above the surface sublayer the equations of motion are approximately solved with a coefficient of turbulent exchange in an arbitrary but not quickly varying height function. By means of the resistance law the height of the surface sublayer is found.

Notes: Abstract The air pollution in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) at a height of about 1 km is considered. Assuming stationarity and horizontal homogeneity of the underlying surface, the turbulent state in the PBL is completely determined by the following external parameters: the Rossby number, one parameter for thermal stratification and two for baroclinicity. The turbulent state in the PBL under the same conditions is also determined completely by the following internal parameters: one for thermal stratification and two for baroclinicity. If the internal or external parameters completely determine the PBL turbulent state, then they should completely determine the diffusion processes in it. That is why for the analysis of pollution data, it is recommended that these representative meteorological parameters should be used rather than selected ones. The external parameters which may be obtained from synoptic data have a definite advantage for statistical processing of air pollution data. This is clearly of importance for forecasting. On the other hand, the connection between pollution and the internal parameters is comparatively well-studied theoretically. That is why for the prediction of pollution, it is necessary to know the dependence between the internal and external parameters, as given by the resistance law. An example of statistical processing of air pollution data in the PBL is treated in terms of the external parameters. In addition, an example is given of a theoretical prediction of pollution using synoptic data.

Notes: Abstract Studies of the influence of orography on the dynamics of atmospheric processes usually assume the following relation as a boundary condition at the surface of the Earth, or at the top of the planetary layer: $$w = u\frac{{\delta z_0 }}{{\delta x}} + v\frac{{\delta z_0 }}{{\delta y}}$$ where u, v and w are the components of wind velocity along the x, y and z axes, respectively, and z 0 = z0(x, y) is the equation of the Earth's orography. We see that w, and consequently the influence of orography on the dynamics of atmospheric processes, depend on the wind (u, v) and on the slope of the obstacle (δz 0/δx, δz0/δy). In the present work, it is shown that the above relation for w is insufficient to describe the influence of orography on the dynamics of the atmosphere. It is also shown that the relation is a particular case of the expression: $$\begin{gathered} w_h = \left| {v_g } \right|\left[ {a_1 (Ro,s)\frac{{\delta z_0 }}{{\delta x}} + a_2 (Ro,s)\frac{{\delta z_0 }}{{\delta y}}} \right] + \hfill \\ + \frac{{\left| {v_g } \right|^2 }}{f}\left[ {b_1 (Ro,s)\frac{{\delta ^2 z_0 }}{{\delta x^2 }} + b_2 (Ro,s)\frac{{\delta ^2 z_0 }}{{\delta y^2 }} + b_3 (Ro,s)\frac{{\delta ^2 z_0 }}{{\delta x\delta y}}} \right] \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ where ¦vv g¦ is the strength of the geostrophic wind, a 1, a2, b1, b2, b3 are functions of Rossby number Ro and of the external stability parameter s. The above relation is obtained with the help of similarity theory, with a parametrization of the planetary boundary layer. Finally, the authors show that a close connection exists between the effects described by the above expression and cyclo- and anticyclogenesis.

Notes: Abstract A numerical model of long-range air-pollutant transport is developed, in which a simple planetary boundary layer (PBL) is incorporated. The pollution field results from the superposition of discrete ‘puffs’ of pollutants which are emitted periodically in different regions. The instantaneous sources in the different cells are approximated by rotational ellipsoids with Gaussian concentration distributions. The puff movement due to the external flow is followed by the displacement of the centroid. The expansion of the puff is modelled by nonisotropic Fickian diffusion. A simple barotropic PBL model is used to study the PBL influence. This model gives the flow velocity and the vertical turbulent exchange coefficient, which depend on the external parameters Ro and S — Rossby number and stratification parameter. The model performance is investigated by special test runs. The dependence of the pollution field on source height, stability conditions and vertical motions is shown.

Notes: Abstract A resistance law for nonstationary conditions is suggested assuming similarity of the non-dimensional Reynold's stress. Equations of motion for the wind velocity deviations are used for the outer layer. In the wall layer, wall similarity is supposed as usual. Then a matching procedure is used for the derivation of the resistance law.

Notes: Abstract The temperature and wind profiles in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) are investigated. Assuming stationary and homogeneous conditions, the turbulent state in the PBL is uniquely determined by the external Rossby number and the stratification parameters. In this study, a simple two-layer barotropic model is proposed. It consists of a surface (SL) and overlying Ekman-type layer. The system of dynamic and heat transfer equations is closed usingK theory. In the SL, the turbulent exchange coefficient is consistent with the results of similarity theory while in the Ekman layer, it is constant. Analytical solutions for the wind and temperature profiles in the PBL are obtained. The SL and thermal PBL heights are properly chosen functions of the stratification so that from the solutions for wind and temperature, the PBL resistance laws can be easily deduced. The internal PBL characteristics necessary for the calculation (friction velocity, angle between surface and geostrophic winds and internal stratification parameter) are presented in terms of the external parameters. Favorable agreement with experimental data and model results is demonstrated. The simplicity of the model allows it to be incorporated in large-scale weather prediction models as well as in the solution of various other meteorological problems.
