Description: Far-infrared observations of the interstellar medium are reported by a balloon-borne telescope. With the 30-centimeter (12-in.) telescope operating at a wavelength of 100 microns, approximately forty new sources were observed in the galactic plane and in the large Magellanic Cloud. Patterns and some degree of understanding are beginning to emerge from the observations of objects in the far infrared.

Description: A survey of a portion of the galactic plane has been carried out at a wavelength of 100 micron with a beamwidth of 12 min. The survey covers 750 square degrees of the sky including most of the galactic plane between 335 and 88 deg galactic longitude and a number of other selected areas of interest. Seventy-two sources have been detected, 60 of which are identified with continuum radio sources, bright nebulae, dark nebulae, and infrared stars.

Description: Recent far-infrared balloon-borne instruments have yielded observations of a number of bright sources at 100 microns. Many of these coincide with HII regions where molecular line emision has been detected. There is some indication of 100 micron emission which does not coincide with radio measurements.

Description: Partial surveys in the far infrared in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres have covered 40% of the galactic equator and assorted regions away from the galactic plane. Approximately 120 100-micron objects are known. These are distributed extensively in galactic longitude and concentrated within + or - two degrees in galactic latitude. From this information, some general conclusions can be drawn about the sensitivity and coverage required for a general sky survey in the far infrared.

Description: The EM wavelength range from 1 micron to 1000 microns is covered by IR astronomy. Since the discovery of the unusual IR object NML Cygnus in 1965, a large number of objects has been observed which radiate a substantial amount of flux in the middle and far IR. The four main categories identified include spatially unresolved galactic objects, diffuse galactic objects, the galactic center, and extragalactic objects. Present-day techniques for observation in IR astronomy are discussed together with a variety of instrumental advances now being made in the laboratory.

Description: The instrument described is an f/5 Newtonian telescope with a parabolic pyrex primary mirror. The telescope tube is 1.5 m long. A 61 cm baffle is included to provide shielding from off-axis objects such as the earth, the moon, and the sun. An outline of the regions covered by sky surveys in June 1970 and in April 1971 is presented. Approximately 750 square degrees of the sky have been covered, including 100 degrees along the galactic plane.

Description: Some stars, in particular, T Tauri stars, have substantial IR excesses at 10 microns. It is now understood that the long wavelength radiation comes from a shell of dust which surrounds the star and absorbs the stellar radiation. Part of the mass which is lost from supergiants is condensed into solid particles which remain in the stellar environment and provide the excess IR radiation. The most intense far-infrared object outside the solar system is the galactic center. Diffuse galactic IR objects include extended regions of gas and dust surrounding very hot young stars and regions of gas and dust surrounding cooler stars. Other subjects considered include IR galaxies and cosmic radiation.
