    Notes: We have succeeded in preparing RFe10.5V1.5 compounds and their corresponding nitrides RFe10.5V1.5Nx, where R=Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Td, Dy, Ho, and Er. The structural and magnetic properties of RFe10.5V1.5Nx have been investigated by x-ray diffraction techniques and magnetic measurements and compared with those of RFe10.5V1.5, NdFe10.5V1.5Nx is a new potential hard magnetic material with excellent intrinsic magnetic properties.

    Notes: Hydrogen disproportionation, desorption, and recombination (HDDR) has been used as a pretreatment to prepare high performance Sm2Fe17Nx and NdFe10Mo2Nx compounds. Isotropic Sm2Fe17Nx and NdFe10Mo2Nx compounds with intrinsic coercivity larger than 12 and 4 kOe have been obtained by nitriding the HDDR treated powders, respectively. It is found that the magnetic properties are sensitively dependent on the time and temperature of the HDDR process, which determine the grain size, nitrogen content, and the amount of α-Fe in the nitrides.

    Notes: We succeed in stabilizing the PrMo1.5Fe10.5 compounds and their nitrides with ThMn12-type structure. The single phase was identified by using x-ray diffraction technique and thermomagnetic measurements. In PrMo1.5Fe10.5Nx, the c-axis is the easy magnetization direction from 0 K to Curie temperature. The anisotropy field is up to 147 KOe at 1.5 K and 110 KOe at room temperature. In combination with a high Curie temperature of 640 K and a large saturation magnetization of 141.70 emu/g, these intrinsic magnetic properties are favorable for permanent magnet applications. As a preliminary attempt, a coercive force of 3.0 and 10.0 KOe was obtained at 300 and 1.5 K, respectively, by using hydrogenation disproportionation and desorption (HDD) processing.

    Notes: Abstract Experimental data are presented concerning the drag force on a stationary phere exposed to an argon plasma flow with temperatures about 104 K and velocities about 102 m/s. A novel probe construction has been employed in the drag measurements in order to exclude the effect of the supporting wire on the sphere drag data. By using the new probe construction with a compensating wire, drag forces on an individual steel sphere in the plasma flow have been measured and compared with those obtained by using the probe construction ernployed by a few previous authors. Experimental results show that the measured drag forces are always less than their counterparts obtained from the standard sphere-drag curve under isothermal flow conditions with the same Reynolds numbers based on the oncoming plasma properties. The drag force on a sphere increases only slightly with the increasing surface temperature of the sphere before it melts. Appreciable diference was found between the experimental data and the predicted results of the available expressions for drag on a sphere exposed to a thermal plasma flow. Further research effort is required to build a more suitable drag correlation.

    Notes: Sensitivity to nickel, cobalt, and chromium is common among the general population. The identification of these sensitivities is generally by the detection of cell-mediated immunity. Detection of humoral immunity to these metals has rarely been undertaken because suitable assays are not available. To further our knowledge about the systemic humoral immune system response to weak hapten-systemic or allogeneic protein conjugates (corrosion and wear products of metallic orthopedic devices), a sensitive enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method for testing for antibody (humoral immunity) to metals was developed. Microtiter plates were coated with human serum albumin (HSA) or glutathione (GSH) and then conjugated with metal ions. Plates coated with HSA or GSH and without metal ions served as background controls. An indirect ELISA method was used to detect antibody binding. Patients bearing cobalt-chromium alloy devices were considered to be the most likely candidates as sources of antibody to metal and were used to document the usefulness of the test. Specificity of the test was documented by inhibition studies with these metal ions in the ELISA assay. The serum samples of 10 patients were screened for the presence of Cr-, Co-, or Ni-specific antibody at various periods up to 5.5 years after implantation of F-75 cobalt alloy total joint replacements. All patients had implants that were functioning well. The pre- and postimplantation humoral immune profiles of patients were determined and compared with each preimplantation control and with a pooled normal serum sample. This study presents evidence that metalprotein complex-specific antibodies can be detected. The clinical implications remain to be determined. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The effect of biomaterials on the super-oxide-producing ability of neutrophils was studied. Human peripheral blood neutrophils were incubated with cobalt-base alloy (F-75) or polystyrene beads of nonphagocytosable size. Respiratory burst activity was studied by measuring super- oxide dismutase inhibitable reduction of cytochrome C. Neutrophils were found to release no more superoxide anion on incubation for up to 3 h with either material in a protein-free medium than controls without foreign material. However, the ability of neutrophils incubated with either biomaterial to subsequently respond to phorbol myristate acetate challenge was decreased (p 〈 0.05). Chemical analysis of supernatants for the F-75 samples showed a high concentration of cobalt in the medium within 1 h of incubation. Minimal chromium and nickel was detected. No correlation could be demonstrated between metal in solution and the respiratory burst defect in neutrophils. Instead it appears that interaction of cells with either surface was the critical event in altering the response to phorbol myristate acetate. This observed functional defect may play an important role in rendering tissue around implanted biomaterials susceptible to infections.

    Notes: The effect of biomaterials on the activation of human neutrophils was studied. Human neutrophils were incubated with F-75 cobalt-based alloy or polystyrene microspheres of a nonphagocytosable size with two times total neutrophil plane surface area. Scanning and transmission electron microscope (SEM, TEM), energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis (EDX), and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS) were used to analyze changes in cellular morphology and metal content. This report presents evidence that human PMNs display morphological changes related to foreign material challenge, including activation on F-75 bead surfaces, pinocytosis of corrosion products, formation of intracellular vacuoles, degranulation, etc. Moreover, when PMNs were present, the corrosion release rate of F-75 increased as much as three times over cell-free controls. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
