    Beschreibung: Multibeam data were collected during RV Maria S. Merian cruise MSM84. Multibeam sonar system was Kongsberg EM712. Data are unprocessed and may contain outliers and blunders and should not be used for grid calculations and charting projects without further editing. The raw multibeam sonar data in Kongsberg multibeam processing format (*.all) were recorded with Kongsberg SIS software running on Windows operating system. Kongsberg data files can be processed using the software packages CARIS HIPS/SIPS or with the open source software package MB-System.

    Beschreibung: Supraglacial liquid water at the margins of ice sheets has an important impact on the surface energy balance and can also influence the ice flow when supraglacial lakes drain to the bed. Optical imagery is able to monitor supraglacial lakes during the summer season. Here we developed an alternative method using polarimetric SAR from Sentinel-1 during 2017–2020 to distinguish between liquid water and other surface types at the margin of the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream. This allows the supraglacial hydrology to be monitored during the winter months too. We found that the majority of supraglacial lakes persist over winter. When comparing our results to optical data, we found significantly more water. Even during summer, many lakes are partly or fully covered by a lid of ice and snow. We used our classification results to automatically map the outlines of supraglacial lakes, create time series of water area for each lake, and hence detect drainage events. We even found several winter time drainages, which might have an important effect on ice flow. Our method has problems during the peak of the melt season, but for the rest of the year it provides crucial information for better understanding the component of supraglacial hydrology in the glaciological system.

    Beschreibung: Surface melt, driven by atmospheric temperatures and albedo, is a strong contribution of mass loss of the Greenland Ice Sheet. In the past, black carbon, algae and other light-absorbing impurities were suggested to govern albedo in Greenland’s ablation zone. Here we combine optical (MODIS/Sentinel-2) and radar (Sentinel-1) remote sensing data with airborne radar and laser scanner data, and engage firn modelling to identify the governing factors leading to dark glacier surfaces in Northeast Greenland. After the drainage of supraglacial lakes, the former lake ground is a clean surface represented by a high reflectance in Sentinel-2 data and aerial photography. These bright spots move with the ice flow and darken by more than 20% over only two years. In contrast, sites further inland do not exhibit this effect. This finding suggests that local deposition of dust, rather than black carbon or cryoconite formation, is the governing factor of albedo of fast-moving outlet glaciers. This is in agreement with a previous field study in the area which finds the mineralogical composition and grain size of the dust comparable with that of the surrounding soils.

    Beschreibung: Grounding-zone wedges (GZW) have been mapped on the sea floor in various sectors of the formerly glaciated continental shelf around Antarctica. In most cases, these wedges record periods of grounding-line stillstands during ice-sheet retreat following the Last Glacial Maximum (~26-19 ka BP). The presence of GZWs along the axis of a palaeo-ice stream trough therefore indicates episodic retreat of the grounding line from its LGM to modern position. However, information about their internal structure is sparse, and precise chronological constraints for both the onset and the duration of the stillstands they represent are still lacking. Consequently, the role of GZW formation in modulating post-LGM ice-sheet retreat cannot be reliably quantified. This information is vital, however, for calculating reliable retreat rates during the past, which are essential for evaluating and understanding the significance of modern retreat rates, particularly for the rapidly changing Amundsen Sea sector. Here we present a novel combination of swath bathymetric, reflection seismic, and sub-bottom sediment profiler data from a newly discovered stacked GZW in the Cosgrove-Abbot palaeo-ice stream trough in the eastern Amundsen Sea Embayment. In total, six generations of overlapping GZWs were mapped over a distance of ~40 km. We will present first estimates of GZW volumes through integration of the different geophysical datasets. Additionally, we recovered eight sediment cores, sampling most of the individual GZWs within the stack, which may allow us to establish age constraints for each grounding-line retreat episode. Together with the estimated GZW volumes, the ages from sediment cores may also enable the calculation of sediment flux rates at grounding lines, which remain elusive for Antarctic grounding lines. This knowledge will help refine available post-LGM retreat chronologies for the Amundsen Sea Embayment, which, in turn, serve as a basis for validating and improving ice-sheet models in an area where precise simulations of future retreat are urgently needed.

    Beschreibung: In recent years several previously undiscovered grounding-zone wedges (GZWs) have been described within the Abbot-Cosgrove palaeo-ice stream trough on the easternmost Amundsen Sea Embayment shelf. These GZWs document both the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 26.5-19 cal. ka BP) grounding-line extent and the subsequent episodic retreat within this trough that neighbors the larger Pine Island-Thwaites trough to the west. Here we combine bathymetric, seismic, and geologic data showing that 1) the grounding line in Abbot Trough did not reach the continental shelf break at any time during the last glacial period, and 2) a prominent stacked GZW constructed from six individual wedges lying upon another was deposited 100 km upstream from the LGM grounding-line position. The available data allow for calculating volumes for most of these individual GZWs and for the entire stack. Sediment cores were recovered seawards from the outermost GZW in the trough, and from the individual wedges of the stacked GZW in order to define the LGM grounding-line extent, and provide minimum grounding-line retreat ages for the respective positions on the stacked GZW. We present implications of a grounded-ice free outer shelf throughout the last glacial period. Furthermore, we assess the significance of the grounding-line stillstand period recorded by the stacked GZW in Abbot Trough for the timing of post-LGM retreat of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet from the Amundsen Sea Embayment shelf.
