    Notes: AlN-BN composite Powders with the microstructure of micrometer-sized AlN particlescoated with BN particles were prepared via a chemical reaction, which used a mixture of boric acid(H3BO3) and urea (CO(NH2)2) as reactants coated on the surface of the AlN particles to react innitrogen ambient. The XRD and TEM studies showed that the coating layer (BN) was composedmostly of amorphous BN particles at the reaction temperature of 850oC ~1100oC. When thecomposite powders formed into pellets using cold isostatic-pressing, then, sintered at pressurelesssintering, the relative density of the composites that contained 15wt% BN reached above 98%, andthere was homogeneous microstructure

    Notes: As there are always certain defects on the final surface of large-scale lightweight mirrors,which are formed in traditional mechanical polishing process, such as microcracks, latticedisturbances, plastic deformation, and so on, an atmospheric pressure plasma polishing method is agood solution to this problem. As a key component, the design of the capacitance couplingatmospheric pressure radio-frequency plasma torch is introduced. The designed torch uses watercooled coaxial aluminium electrodes with special treatment to avoid arcing between them. Innormal machining process, the mixture of reaction gas and plasma gas with optimum ratio is inputinto the plasma torch. Then, excited by radio-frequency power, reaction gas is ionized in the plasmaso as to create high density and energy reactive radicals under atmospheric pressure. The radicalscause chemical reactions with the atoms on the part surface, which performs an effective atomscaleremoval process. As the machining process is chemical in nature, this method avoidssurface/subsurface defects mentioned above. Furthermore, initial experiment data analysis hasproved that the atmospheric pressure plasma polishing method is effective and reliable, as well asdemonstrates the validity of the designed plasma torch

    Notes: Four acrylic monomers bearing phenothiazine moieties, i.e., N-acrylyl-phenothiazine (APT), N-acrylyl-2-chlorophenothiazine (ACPT), N-acrylyl-2-acetylphenothiazine (AAPT), and 10-acrylyl-1-azaphenothiazine (AAzPT) were synthesized by dehydrohalogenation of the corresponding N-(β-chloropropionyl)-substituted phenothiazine derivatives with 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-5-ene (DBU). These monomers could easily be polymerized by initiation with AIBN. The emission fluorescence spectra of the monomers and their polymers were recorded, which showed that the polymers displayed much stronger fluorescence than their corresponding monomers at the same chromophore concentrations. This phenomenon, as termed as “structural self-quenching effect,” was commonly observed for acrylic monomers bearing chromophore moieties and ascribed to the coexistence of the electron-donating chromophore and the electron-accepting double bond in the same molecule. Because of the formation of exciplex, the monomer APT, as well as ACPT, AAPT, AAzPT, and their polymers, could initiate the photopolymerization of AN. The charge transfer phenomenon between P(APT), P(ACPT), and C60 was also explored. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Acrylic monomers bearing electron-donating quinolyl moiety, i.e., 8-acryloyloxyquinoline (AQ) was prepared and polymerized. It was found that the fluorescence intensity of AQ was much lower than that of P(AQ) at the same chromophore concentration. The fluorescence of P(AQ) could be quenched by electron-deficient vinyl monomers, such as acrylonitrile (AN) and methyl methacrylate (MMA). This is another example of the “fluorescence structural self-quenching effect” termed by us previously, and demonstrates again that this phenomenon is not an accidental but a general one for acrylic monomers bearing electron-donating chromophores. The photopolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) sensitized by AQ and P(AQ) as well as combining with carbon tetrabromide (CBr4) was studied kinetically. From the rates of the polymerization (Rp) and overall activation energies obtained for these four systems, it was found that Rp sensitized by the binary systems was much higher than by AQ or P(AQ) alone, while the molecular weights of the resulting P(AN) were lower. The fluorescent analysis of the resulting P(AN) in solution showed that the sensitizers also entered into the P(AN) chains. A mechanism of charge transfer complex (CTC) formation was tentatively suggested for the photopolymerization of AN initiated by these four systems. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Description: The coordination of carbon and nitrogen metabolism is essential for bacteria to adapt to nutritional variations in the environment, but the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. In autotrophic cyanobacteria, high CO2 levels favor the carboxylase activity of ribulose 1,5 bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) to produce 3-phosphoglycerate, whereas low CO2 levels promote the oxygenase activity of RuBisCO, leading to 2-phosphoglycolate (2-PG) production. Thus, the 2-PG level is reversely correlated with that of 2-oxoglutarate (2-OG), which accumulates under a high carbon/nitrogen ratio and acts as a nitrogen-starvation signal. The LysR-type transcriptional repressor NAD(P)H dehydrogenase regulator (NdhR) controls the expression of genes related to carbon metabolism. Based on genetic and biochemical studies, we report here that 2-PG is an inducer of NdhR, while 2-OG is a corepressor, as found previously. Furthermore, structural analyses indicate that binding of 2-OG at the interface between the two regulatory domains (RD) allows the NdhR tetramer to adopt a repressor conformation, whereas 2-PG binding to an intradomain cleft of each RD triggers drastic conformational changes leading to the dissociation of NdhR from its target DNA. We further confirmed the effect of 2-PG or 2-OG levels on the transcription of the NdhR regulon. Together with previous findings, we propose that NdhR can sense 2-OG from the Krebs cycle and 2-PG from photorespiration, two key metabolites that function together as indicators of intracellular carbon/nitrogen status, thus representing a fine sensor for the coordination of carbon and nitrogen metabolism in cyanobacteria.
