    Notes: Abstract. The delivery of continuous and synchronous multimedia data from a database (or file) server to multiple destinations over a network presents new challenges in the area of buffer management. Many factors that were not considered in conventional buffer management must be examined. In this paper, we investigate the principles of buffer model and management for multimedia data presentations in distributed systems. The primary goal is to minimize the response time of multimedia presentations while ensuring that all continuity and synchronization requirements are satisfied. A framework for buffer model and management is introduced. Minimum buffering requirements at both client and server sides to guarantee the continuity and synchrony of the presentation of multimedia data are examined. A prefetching and replacement strategy which satisfies these requirements is then offered. These principles and techniques provide users with the full range of information required to develop a distributed system for multimedia presentations.

    Notes: Abstract. In this paper, we investigate a playout scheduling framework for supporting the continuous and synchronized presentations of multimedia streams in a distributed multimedia presentation system. We assume a situation in which the server and network transmissions provide sufficient support for the delivery of media objects. In this context, major issues regarding the enforcement of the smooth presentation of multimedia streams at client sites must be addressed to deal with rate variance of stream presentations and delay variance of networks. We develop various playout-scheduling algorithms that are adaptable to quality-of-service parameters. The proposed algorithms permit the local adjustment of unsynchronized presentations by gradually accelerating or retarding presentation components, rather than abruptly skipping or pausing the presentation materials. A comprehensive experimental analysis of the proposed algorithms demonstrates that our algorithms can effectively avoid playout gaps (or hiccups) in the presentations. This scheduling framework can be readily used to support customized multimedia presentations.

    Notes: Abstract. Many applications require the management of spatial data in a multidimensional feature space. Clustering large spatial databases is an important problem, which tries to find the densely populated regions in the feature space to be used in data mining, knowledge discovery, or efficient information retrieval. A good clustering approach should be efficient and detect clusters of arbitrary shape. It must be insensitive to the noise (outliers) and the order of input data. We propose WaveCluster, a novel clustering approach based on wavelet transforms, which satisfies all the above requirements. Using the multiresolution property of wavelet transforms, we can effectively identify arbitrarily shaped clusters at different degrees of detail. We also demonstrate that WaveCluster is highly efficient in terms of time complexity. Experimental results on very large datasets are presented, which show the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed approach compared to the other recent clustering methods.

    Notes: Abstract This article presents a theoretical basis for global concurrency control to maintain global serializability in multidatabase systems. Three correctness criteria are formulated that utilize the intrinsic characteristics of global transactions to determine the serialization order of global subtransactions at each local site. In particular, two new types of serializability, chain-conflicting serializability and sharing serializability, are proposed and hybrid serializability, which combines these two basic criteria, is discussed. These criteria offer the advantage of imposing no restrictions on local sites other than local serializability while retaining global serializability. The graph testing techniques of the three criteria are provided as guidance for global transaction scheduling. In addition, an optimal property of global transactions for determinating the serialization order of global subtransactions at local sites is formulated. This property defines the upper limit on global serializability in multidatabase systems.

    Notes: Abstract Advances in multimedia computing technologies offer new approaches to the support of computer-assisted education and training within many application domains. Novel interactive presentation tools can be built to enhance traditional teaching methods with more active learning. Since a variety of user expectations are possible in such an environment, research must address the incorporation of these factors into presentation tools. During an interactive learning/training process, presentation tools must be able to handle various types of delays. A flexibly adjustable quality of service (QoS) should thus be supported. In this paper, we investigate a framework and systematic strategies for supporting the continuous and synchronized retrieval and presentation of multimedia data streams in a client/server distributed multimedia environment for educational digital libraries. Specifically, we establish a practical framework for specifying multimedia objects, tasks, schedules, and synchronization constraints between media streams. We identify the QoS parameters critical to the support of multimedia presentations for learning and training activities. Based on the proposed framework and QoS specifications, we develop presentation scheduling and buffer management strategies which can enforce the specified QoS requirements in an educational digital library environment.

    Notes: Abstract Current retrieval methods in geographic image databases use only pixel-by-pixel spectral information. Texture is an important property of geographical images that can improve retrieval effectiveness and efficiency. In this paper, we present a content-based retrieval approach that utilizes the texture features of geographical images. Various texture features are extracted using wavelet transforms. Based on the texture features, we design a hierarchical approach to cluster geographical images for effective and efficient retrieval, measuring distances between feature vectors in the feature space. Using wavelet-based multi-resolution decomposition, two different sets of texture features are formulated for clustering. For each feature set, different distance measurement techniques are designed and experimented for clustering images in a database. The experimental results demonstrate that the retrieval efficiency and effectiveness improve when our clustering approach is used.

    Notes: Abstract Large visual database systems require effective and efficient ways of indexing and accessing visual data on the basis of content. In this process, significant features must first be extracted from image data in their pixel format. These features must then be classified and indexed to assist efficient access to image content. With the large volume of visual data stored in a visual database, image classification is a critical step to achieve efficient indexing and retrieval. In this paper, we investigate an effective approach to the clustering of image data based on the technique of fractal image coding, a method first introduced in conjunction with fractal image compression technique. A joint fractal coding technique, applicable to pairs of images, is used to determine the degree of their similarity. Images in a visual database can be categorized in clusters on the basis of their similarity to a set of iconic images. Classification metrics are proposed for the measurement of the extent of similarity among images. By experimenting on a large set of texture and natural images, we demonstrate the applicability of these metrics and the proposed clustering technique to various visual database applications.

We firstintroduce an effective block-oriented image decomposition structure which can be used to represent image content inimage database systems. We then discuss theapplication of this image data model to content-based image retrieval.Using wavelet transforms to extract image features,significant content features can be extracted from image datathrough decorrelating the data in their pixel format into frequency domain. Feature vectors ofimages can then be constructed. Content-based image retrievalis performed by comparing the feature vectors of the query imageand the decomposed segments in database images.Our experimental analysis illustrates that the proposed block-oriented image representationoffers a novel decomposition structure to be used tofacilitate effective and efficient image retrieval.
