Notes: Neutron diffraction techniques have been used to study the antiferromagnetic form factor of Sr2CuO2Cl2, which has the body-centered-tetragonal (I4/mmm) K2NiF4-type structure (the same as that of tetragonal La2CuO4 but with the out-of-plane oxygens replaced by Cl and the La by Sr). The antiferromagnetic form factor was obtained at 15 K by measuring the integrated intensities of the ( (1)/(2) (1)/(2) 0), ( (1)/(2) (1)/(2) 2), ( (1)/(2) (1)/(2) 3), ( (3)/(2) (3)/(2) 0), ( (3)/(2) (3)/(2) 6), ( (3)/(2) (5)/(2) 1), ( (3)/(2) (3)/(2) 8), and ( (5)/(2) (5)/(2) 0) magnetic reflections of a single crystal of Sr2CuO2Cl2. The experimentally determined magnetic form factor is similar to that of La2CuO4. The experimental data were compared with the Cu2+ magnetic form factor and with the results of band theoretical calculations. We find that the fit to the experimental data is improved if one assumes a dipolar spin polarization on the in-plane oxygen ions.

Notes: Neutron-diffraction techniques have been used to study the antiferromagnetic form factor of a La2NiO4 single crystal at 15 K. The antiferromagnetic form factor was obtained by measuring the integrated intensities of 16 magnetic reflections. A plateau is clearly seen at low Q (up to 3 A(ring)−1) in the experimentally determined form factor, similar to those observed for La2CuO4 and Sr2CuO2Cl2. As in the case of these latter compounds, the fit of the experimental data by a Ni2+ ionic form factor is not satisfactory. The experimental data are compared with a recent spin-polarized band calculation and with a covalency model.

Notes: High-quality Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox/Ag superconducting tapes were fabricated directly from the nitrate salts of Bi, Sr, Ca, and Cu by the partial-melt-growth technique. Nitrate particles were deposited electrostatically on the Ag substrate and heat treated. After process optimization of the superconducting tapes, the best samples showed typical Tc of 89 K with zero applied field critical current density of 2×104 A/cm2 (Ic=11.2 A) at 77 K and 2.6×105 A/cm2 (Ic=190 A) at 4.2 K. Unlike films grown using solid state reacted precursor powders, these films lacked the typical Bi-free, needlelike defects and possessed a smooth morphology. X-ray diffraction patterns showed the film to be highly c-axis oriented. The processing of these tapes significantly reduces the overall fabrication time from precursor materials preparation to final heat treatment.

Notes: We report detailed two-dimensional in situ measurements of electron density inside an injected-beam crossed-field amplifier operating at 150 MHz. It is demonstrated that during amplification there is a spatial redistribution of the cycloidal electron beam as electrons are drawn to the anode. These measurements have been compared with a numerical simulation [G. E. Dombrowski, IEEE Trans. Electron. Devices 35, 2060 (1988)] which predicts a change in electron trajectories but gives a larger electron loss than was measured.

Notes: Great optical activity is realized by a vacancy ordered III2VI3 compound (Ga0.3In0.7)2Se3 with point group 6 which is based on wurtzite structure and characterized by the screw arrangement of cation atoms along the c axis. The transition of the fundamental absorption edge is direct and the band gap is estimated to be 2.05 eV. An anomalous optical rotatory dispersion around the absorption edge is observed and the maximum rotatory power of 125°/mm is obtained at λ=620 nm. The optical activity for red light is always above 60°/mm, that is 4–6 times as large as that of α quartz. (Ga0.3In0.7)2Se3 single crystal is very useful, especially for the He–Ne laser as an optically active substance; the rotatory power reaches 103°/mm, being more than 5 times of α quartz. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of precipitation in Ag-implanted and annealed Al0.3Ga0.7As. Silver was chosen because it does not form compounds with Ga and/or As when precipitating based on bulk thermodynamics arguments. TEM confirmed the formation of an elemental metal/semiconductor composite, which consists of nanometer-sized Ag (fcc structure) precipitates dispersed in the matrix. The precipitates are nonspherical and have an orientation relationship to Al0.3Ga0.7As of (200)Ag//(200)AlGaAs, (02-2)Ag//(02-2)AlGaAs, and [011]Ag//[011]AlGaAs. High temperature (900 °C) anneals transform the phase of the precipitate to hexagonal, Ag3(GaAl) compounds. This shape distribution has been correlated with inhomogeneous broadening of the optical absorption. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnesium diboride (MgB2) single crystals, with a maximum size of 0.5×0.5×0.02 mm3, were grown by the vapor transport method in a sealed molybdenum crucible. A superconducting transition with the onset temperature of 38.6 K was confirmed by both transport and magnetization measurements. The upper critical field anisotropy ratio, Hc2(parallel)ab(0)/Hc2(parallel)c(0), was estimated to be 2.6 from the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram for MgB2 single crystals. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The rotational velocity of neutrally buoyant particles was measured in a planar Couette flow. The flow cross section is rectangular with a 4-to-1 (200 mm/50 mm) aspect ratio. The mixtures consist of uniform polystyrene spheres and a glycerol–water solution of specific density 1.052. Four sphere sizes have been tested: 3, 4.76, 6.35, and 7.94 mm. Particle motion in turbulent flow was recorded with a high-speed SP-2000 motion analysis system. The characteristics of particle motion, including particle spin, were measured as a function of the distance from the wall, at three shear rates corresponding to Re=4.6, 6.8, and 9.2×104. It was found that the particle angular velocity normalized by shear rate is a function of the normalized distance to the moving and stationary walls. The flow conditions are defined with measurements on mean velocities, particle velocity fluctuations, kinetic energy, inertial stresses, and diffusion coefficients.

Notes: A transparent population modelling approach is used to analyse a large-scale extensive fish culture system, the bighead carp, Aristichthys nobilis (Richardson 1845), fishery in a Chinese reservoir. The population model incorporates explicit submodels for density-dependent growth and size-dependent mortality, and allows the assessment of stocking density, seed fish size, fishing mortality (fishing effort), and gear selectivity. The process of model building and parameter estimation from stocking and catch data is described in detail. The full analysis is carried out in computer spreadsheets where all model components are visible and can easily be modified to take account of specific conditions, or to explore different assumptions. The practical use of the model in management decision making is discussed, together with data requirements and the possible need for experimental management.
