Notizen: Abstract The optical emission spectra from expanding low-temperature cascade arc plasmas were studied. The objective of this study was to examine the distinctive features of low-temperature cascade arc plasmas in comparison with a radio frequency (RF) plasma source. The principal results obtained in this study were: (1) in an expanding cascade arc plasma jet, active heavy particles (mainly excited argon or helium neutral species under our operating conditions), rather than electrons, are responsible for the excitation of reactive species when a reactive gas is injected into the plasma jet, (2) the excitation of reactive species was found to be controlled by the electronic energy levels of these excited argon or helium neutrals, (3) changing the operating parameters affected only the emission intensities of excited species, and no effect on the emission nature of plasmas was observed.

Notizen: Abstract Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) was used to study, at the molecular level, the plasma polymerization of trimethylsilane (TMS) and methane. Direct ESR analysis of the plasma coated Al substrate required the use of a novel ESR technique. TMS plasma deposit on Al showed a single broad resonance line near g = 2.003. The signal was stable in vacuum and decayed on exposure to air, with a significant fraction persisting for days. Results show that this signal arises from silicon dangling bonds. Identical TMS signals were observed from films prepared by the DC cathodic or the AF glow discharge method but their decay rates were different. In contrast, the deposition of methane produced two distinct types of carbon-based signals depending upon the method of deposition. TMS or CH4 films deposited by the DC cathodic method showed slow signals decay and high refractive indices value. While the use of Al as the substrate showed plasma-coating radicals, only substrate radicals were observed when PE was used as the substrate. The nature of radicals formed depends not only on the deposition method used but also on the substrate type.

Notizen: Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) was used to identify reactive species and their excitation states in low-temperature cascade arc plasmas of N2, CF4, C2F4, CH4, and CH3OH. In a cascade arc plasma, the plasma gas (argon or helium) was excited in the cascade arc generator and injected into a reactor in vacuum. A reactive gas was injected into the cascade arc torch (CAT) that was expanding in the reactor. What kind of species of a reactive gas, for example, nitrogen, are created in the reactor is dependent on the electronic energy levels of the plasma gas in the cascade arc plasma jet. OES revealed that no ion of nitrogen was found when argon was used as the plasma gas of which metastable species had energy less than the ionization energy of nitrogen. When helium was used, ions of nitrogen were found. While OES is a powerful tool to identify the products of the cascade arc generation (activation process), it is less useful to identify the reactive species that are responsible for surface modification of polymers and also for plasma polymerization. The plasma surface modification and plasma polymerization are deactivation processes that cannot be identified by photoemission, which is also a deactivation process. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notizen: Plasma polymers of three isomers of diaminocyclohexane (DACH) were deposited on polyethylene, SiO2, and mica at 20°C. The deposition rate was measured as a function of plasma density and power; a maximum was observed in the latter function. The deposition rate was highest for the monomer with the highest flow rate. The film refractive index was observed to increase with both power density and the degree of fragmentation in the plasma. Film composition was measured by elementary analysis, and was found to be almost identical for each of the three isomers; a mechanism for the polymerization reaction is proposed. The percentage of primary amino groups decreased with increasing power density and with film thickness. Surface force measurements of the thickness and refractive index agreed well with the corresponding ellipsometry values in dry air, and am adhesive force, independent of power density, was measured. When the film was exposed to water vapor, it swelled considerably and the adhesion was determined by capillary forces. Associated with swelling, at high power, was an extremely regular 2-ply rope pattern of protruding material. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons. Inc.

Notizen: Contact electrification experiments have been performed for the purpose of studying the effect of varying film thickness on charge transfer during metal-insulator contact. Thin films of plasma polymerized methane are deposited on silicon substrates using a magnetically enhanced glow discharge system. Film uniformity across the wafer is verified by ellipsometric techniques. Variations in film thickness from approximately 100 to 600 Å result in a variable amount of charge transfer when the films come in contact with a metal probe. Charging of the polymer film increases with increasing film thickness up to a limiting thickness of approximately 375-400 Å. Similar results are obtained when various substrate treatments are performed previous to film deposition and charge measurements are obtained as a function of film thickness. Contact electrification measurements show the metal-insulator contact is influenced by the insulator/substrate interface up to the same limiting film thickness (375-400 Å). The instrumentation used in this series of experiments is based on measurement of the currents associated with the contact and subsequent separation of the surface state systems of a metal and an insulating polymer. This technique relies on measurement of currents in the picoampere range and appears to be a novel method to experimentally determine charge penetration depth. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Electrical conductivity measurements and scanning electron microscopy have been used to study uncoated and poly(p-xylylene)-coated samples of polyacetylene doped with AsF5. These initial results indicate a considerable reduction in the decay rate of conductivity in the presence of oxygen as well as a decreased rate of thermal decomposition of the dopant when heated between 50°C and 115°C in vacuum by the coating.
