Notes: One of the recent applications of ion sources is their use for ion beam assisted deposition of thin films and coatings. This method combines a coating technique such as evaporation or sputtering with bombardment with ions in the keV energy range. The required ions with defined energy, flux, and impact angle are delivered from an ion source. An apparatus for ion beam assisted evaporation with a duoplasmatron ion source is described. The features of the duoplasmatron with respect to application for ion beam assisted deposition such as beam shape, uniformity and intensity, ion-to-neutral ratio, and focused and defocused mode are discussed.

Notes: Ion beam assisted deposition is a versatile technique for preparing thin films and coatings for various applications. Up to now a prototype setup for research purposes has been used in our laboratory. Processing of industrial standard workpieces requires a high current ion source with broad beam and high uniformity for homogeneous bombardment. In this contribution a new apparatus for large area samples will be described. It is named ALLIGATOR (German acronym of facility for ion assisted evaporation on transverse movable or rotary targets). In order to have a wide energy range available two ion sources are used. One delivers a beam energy up to 1.3 keV. The other is suitable for energies from 5 keV up to 40 keV. The "high-energy'' ion source is a multicusp multiaperture source with 180-mA total current and a beam diameter of 280 mm at the target position.

Notes: Summary The aim of this study was to obtain data about the pharmacological properties of a new glycoside derivative in man. Plasma concentrations and ECG parameters were measured after oral and intravenous administration of a single dose of 1.2 mg methyl proscillaridin in 16 healthy volunteers, using a strictly randomized, two-period change-over design. Glycoside concentrations were measured using a modified86Rb-erythrocyte-assay. QT-duration, corrected for frequency (QTc), was the principal variable measured in the ECG. By either route, there was a maximum plasma level after 1 hour, which had decreased to a minimum at 3 hours, followed by a second peak at 4 to 10 hours (orally〉iv). From 10 to 72 hours the concentrations decreased with a median t 1/2 of 23.3 hours (iv) and 33.0 hours (orally). Comparison of the ratio of plasma concentrations following oral and iv administration resulted in a bioavailability of 69 % using the 48 hour plasma levels, and 59 % using the areas under the concentration-time curves. The mean QTc was maximally shortened to 28 msec at 1 hour after iv and to 19 msec at 10 hours after the oral dose. A distinct similarity between time-concentration and time-QTc curves was seen after the initial distribution phase, both after oral and intravenous administration. The new derivative shows a rapid elimination. Its bioavailability is reasonably high.

Notes: Summary The effect of Arwin® on peripheral arterial occlusive disease has been studied in two multicentre trials. In the first, in cases of severe peripheral arterial circulatory disorders of the lower extremities with permanent rest pain (stages III and III + IV according to Fontaine) Arwin® had a better intravenous therapeutic effect than anticoagulant treatment. A further trial was done to investigate whether subcutaneous administration of Arwin® would have an effect superior to classical conservative therapy with vasodilator drugs in this type of disease. The results were assessed by sequential analysis. Arwin® was again shown to be a much better treatment. Problems of medical documentation and statistics are discussed in relation to the value of sequential analysis.

Description / Table of Contents: Custom-Tailored Coating-Interface Systems by Means of lon Beam Assisted DepositionA coated sample represents in its most simple form a threefold junction consisting of substrate interface and top layer. In many cases the top layer consists again of several sublayers or the interface contains a modified substrate surface and an interconnection between top layer and interface. An ideal coating technique is evaporation under simultaneous ion bombardment with an ion source it is possible because of several free parameters to come close to an ideal system. For the coating Al/Al2O3 on steel it is shown that the width of a composition gradient between the sublayers Al and Al2O3 can be optimized with respect to excellent corrosion resistance. The example CrxN coating on steel or corrosion and wear resistence demonstrate the ability to optimize the corrosion and wear resistence by modifying the microstructure via variation of the parameters ion energy, ion impact angle, ion to atom ratio and process temperature. Finally, TiN layers on steel were chosen to show that the ion beam parameters influence the porosity and the crystal structure of the coatings. This fact can be used to optimize the corrosion protection or wear reduction obtained by the coating. Especially the multilayer Ti/TiO2/TiN exhibits very interesting properties.
Besonders Mehrlagenschichten Ti/TiO2/TiN zeigen interessante Eigenschaften.

Description / Table of Contents: Formation of Wear Resistant Surface Layers by Ion Beam TechniquesIon beam techniques are state of the art procedures for the microelectronic industries. Recently they found more and more interest in materials science with respect to surface improvement of polymers, ceramics and metals. In this contribution at first the procedures and the equipment for ion implantation and ion beam assisted deposition are described. Then examples for basic investigations concerning the formation of hard, dense and non-porous surface coatings with potential for wear and corrosion inhibition are given. Especially the interdependency of ion beam parameters, microstructure of coating and interface and macroscopic properties of the coating/substrate system are discussed. Finally the surface treatment of piston seals, ball bearings and metal forming tools is mentioned illustrating the application potential of ion beam techniques.

Description / Table of Contents: Behaviour of light metals with PVD-CrN coatings using different test methodsThe application of thin hard coatings on machining tools, e.g. drilling tools is state of the art. The increase of lifetime of coated Tools compared to uncoated tools is well known. [1]. In this context „separation of functions“ is an often used phrase, by meaning the separation of functions of the volume and the surface of materials. Going one step forward, from the point of view of tribology or corrosion this means, you have „only“ to protect the surface by using a „good“ coating without looking at the material underneath. In the past the influence of substrate materials or the optimization of the system (substrate-coating) was not the main aim of PVD development. Looking at substrate and coating as a system is especially necessary, if the differences of the properties of substrate and coating are large (e.g. hard coating - light metals). This paper shows different aspect of the tribological and electrochemical characterization of PVD coated light metals (CrN coating).
