Notizen: Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) capable of measuring the local density of states dI/dV=G(V,x,y) correlated with the topography z(x,y) is implemented on a PC/AT computer system. An algorithm using dimensional decoupling and recursive linking is incorporated in a compact C-language code to achieve flexible and sophisticated STS control. Data acquisition and processing methods which provide the local density of states G(V,x,y,s) at different tip heights s in registry with z(x,y) are described. Examples of novel low-temperature experiments are given to show the capabilities of this implementation of STS.

Notizen: The proximity-Josephson effect (PJE) is a powerful general method of determining the symmetry of the pair wave function in exotic superconductors. The method is simple and relatively insensitive to the surface condition of the sample. A superconducting probe (S) of known pairing symmetry (typically Nb or Ta) is brought into contact with the sample (N). Observations and arguments based on the de Gennes boundary condition at the NS interface both indicate formation of a local, proximity-induced superconducting region of depth ξ in the sample (N) under the probe. The induced pairs have the same symmetry as those of S. The expected pair-phase dependence of the coupling energy between the pairs in N and S leads to a Josephson current Ic(T), which may be observed up to a junction critical temperature T* which is typically ∼0.8 of the Tc of S. When the measurement temperature falls below the bulk Tc of N (the exotic superconductor), a pair wave function of possibly different symmetry forms in the bulk of N and overlaps the induced pair wave function near the probe. Weak interactions between the induced and bulk pairs occur. In the case of UBe13 contacted with a Ta tip, the interaction weakly suppresses the induced pairs [which determine Ic(T)] leading to a reduction of the Josephson current at T〈Tc. This observation of a negative S-wave proximity effect in superconducting UBe13, in good agreement with a Ginzburg–Landau analysis, is strong evidence for triplet pairing in this heavy fermion compound.

Notizen: We describe a compact scanning tunneling microscope using piezoelectric bimorph elements to achieve a large scanning area of 20 μm2 at 4.2 K. This instrument provides inherent temperature compensation, compatibility with a high magnetic field environment, and a novel means of rough sample–tip (z) adjustment.

Notizen: Abstract Scanning tunneling spectroscopy applied to BiO cleavage planes of 90 KT c BSCCO 2212 at 4.2 K simultaneously provides topography and localdI/dV spectra (superconducting DOS). The spectra, which are similar to recent photoemission spectra, confirm a large gap parameter Δ(x, y) associated with an apparently gapless DOS on the uppermost layer. Transverse spatial variations of Δ on a 100 Å scale are attributed to variations in BiO metallicity, presumably originating in oxygen stoichiometry variations in an unannealed crystal. We identify two characteristicdI/dV spectral shapes with regions of metallic and nonmetallic BiO layers, and can relate these by the McMillan model of the superconducting proximity effect. A sharply peaked spectral shape, similar to that observed in photoemission, is predicted for the metallic BiO layer induced superconducting by its proximity to the underlying CuO2 planes. The short mean free path and short coherence length imply that both tunneling and photoemission spectra are heavily weighted toward contributions from the BiO layer in fully metallic 2212. The present results and analysis thus suggest that the superconducting proximity effect influences the lineshapes seen by both techniques.

Notizen: Abstract Current-voltage characteristics of high-critical-current Bi2Sr2CaCu2O10/Ag ribbons were measured using both transport and magnetization techniques. The slope of these curves changes with magnetic field and temperature in a way very similar to the observedj c (H, T) behavior. This correspondence between the critical current and the slope of theI–V characteristics can be explained within the thermally activated flux creep framework. The dependence ofj c on the angle between field and ribbon is compared to the existing intrinsic anisotropy models.

Notizen: The general problem of determining the N-metal pair potential from tunneling characteristics of proximity effect N-S sandwiches is assessed, and two specific methods are presented. These methods are applied to the treatment of data on PET junctions of the form In-Al2O3-Al/Nb. Inclusion of the influence of the Nb-induced Al pair potential produces important corrections to Nb properties (α2F(E), λ, Μ*) initially obtained by neglecting this influence.

Notizen: An extensive superconducting electron tunneling study of Ta, using both a proximity method and an optimized conventional spectroscopy, is reported. The results for Ta confirm the electron-phonon origin of superconductivity in this element, and provide slightly improved superconducting parameters: λ =0.73 and Μph * = 0.11. The results from the PET and optimized conventional methods are in substantial agreement, although the proximity method appears to provide somewhat better resolution of structure in the Eliashberg function α2 F(E).

Notizen: A quantitative proximity electron tunneling spectroscopy (PETS) is demonstrated for the study of strong coupling superconductors which do not form suitable insulating oxides for conventional McMillan-Rowell tunneling spectroscopy. Proximity junctions of the form C-Al2O3-Al/S are employed, with Al thickness d N ≤ 100 ». Here S is the superconductor of interest and C is any convenient counterelectrode. The physical basis for the method, experimental techniques, and data obtained from foils of Nb are presented. The results for Nb include the energy-dependent pair potential δS(E), the renormalization function Z(E), effective phonon spectrum α 2 F(Ω), electron-phonon coupling constant λ, and Coulomb pseudopotential Μ*. A full discussion of the underlying theory and details of the methods of analysis employed to obtain, in addition, the pair potential of the Al proximity layer are contained in a following paper.

Notizen: Abstract A study of electron-phonon coupling in pure Mg by means of proximity tunneling into Mg films backed by recrystallized Nb foils is reported. The results indicate that Mg in thicknesses of 20–100 Å continuously covers a clean Nb surface and yield a value λ=0.29±0.03 for the electron-phonon coupling constant. This is consistent with an as yet unobserved superconductingT c =0.3 mK for pure Mg.

Notizen: The technique of McMillan-Rowell tunneling spectroscopy, extended by a method of proximity junctions to poorly oxidizing materials, is applied to study electron-phonon coupling in Nb1−x Zr x at x = 0.25, corresponding to the maximum T cin the Nb-Zr alloy system. The resulting α2 F(Ω) function provides λ = 1.3 for the alloy, and indicates that the primary benefit to superconductivity upon alloying arises from softening of the effective phonon spectrum.
