    Description: Un updated compilation of published and new data of major ion (Ca, Cl, K, Mg, Na, NO3, SO4) and methylsulfonate (MS) concentrations in snow from 520 Antarctic sites is provided by the national ITASE (International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition) programmes of Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Norway, United Kingdom, the United States, and the national Antarctic programme of Finland. The comparison shows that snow chemistry concentrations vary by up to four orders of magnitude across Antarctica and exhibit distinct geographical patterns. The Antarctic-wide comparison of glaciochemical records provides a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of the fundamental factors that ultimately control the chemistry of snow or ice samples. This paper aims to initiate data compilation and administration in order to provide a framework for facilitation of antarctic-wide snow chemistry discussions across all ITASE nations and other contributing groups. The data are made available through the ITASE web page (http://www2.umaine.edu/itase/content/syngroups/snowchem.html) and will be updated with new data as they are provided. In addition, recommendations for future research efforts are summarized.

    Description: Mt. Vesuvius, Italy, is regarded as one of the world's most dangerous volcanoes because of the potential for vast numbers of people to be affected by the renewal of volcanic activity; more than 600 000 people live within 10 km of the summit alone. Vesuvius has been quiescent since 1944 and with continued dormancy, the more likely it is that the next eruption will be explosive. At that point, wide-spread concern is likely over the potential health hazard of the ash, away from the zone of primary volcanic hazards. Analyses of the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of ash provide us with critical information on the potential toxicity of the particles, for example, whether particles are sufficiently small to enter the lungs and whether the particles have reactive properties which could trigger disease. Rapid assessment of these characteristics allows real-time decision making on hazard mitigation issues (e.g. distribution of dust masks) and allows considered judgement on whether to embark on major medical/toxicological studies. The study presented here is the first time that the potential respiratory health hazard of ash from Vesuvius volcano has been considered and allows planning for future eruption scenarios. Twenty-one ash samples, representing the range of eruption styles at Vesuvius, were collected and analysed. The results demonstrate that the physical processes of fragmentation play an important role in determining the grain size and, therefore, hazard, of the ash. Here, the finest samples derive from the interaction of magma and water during the final, phreatomagmatic phases of plinian and subplinian eruptions ( 16 vol.% 〈4 µm material), while the low-intensity explosivity activity, associated with lava effusion, produces coarse ash posing a lesser hazard. The quantity of material found in the different health-pertinent fractions is strongly correlated, allowing prediction of these fractions where only coarser sieve data are available. Since Vesuvius produces silica under-saturated products, ‘free’ crystalline silica in the ash does not pose a significant health hazard (〈 2 wt.% cristobalite and 〈3 wt.% quartz). Surface tests showed that the capability of the ash to generate the highly-reactive hydroxyl free radical varies considerably amongst samples, with available surface iron correlating well with reactivity potential.

    Notes: A laser mirror mount is described for use in a vacuum enclosure which will allow for horizontal and vertical movement and, in addition, offer linear travel of around 1 cm with micron accuracy. This design is relatively simple and easy to produce and has proven both rugged and reliable in day-to-day use. Such a mount has great potential in applications such as color center lasers where operation at 77 K is required, thus necessitating a vacuum enclosure.

    Notes: Phragmidium rubi-idaei produced five spore stages on red raspberry and overwintered as teliospores adhering to canes. In the field spermagonia appeared in a single flush in early summer on leaves of the primocanes (first-year canes) and on leaves of the lateral shoots of fruiting canes, and were followed by aecia, uredinia and telia. Aecia and uredinia occasionally appeared on petioles and sepals and uredinia on drupelets of mature fruit. Lesions caused by aecia and uredinia on the bases of primocanes did not become cankerous in the following fruiting year. Necroses associated with large aecia produced a shot-hole effect and leaflets heavily affected by either aecia, uredinia or telia abscissed prematurely.The sequence of spore stages on pot-grown plants inoculated with mature overwintered teliospores took 60 days to the reappearance of telia. The rate of development of uredinia and associated necroses was faster on younger than on older leaves but the cumulative spore yield was not significantly different.Optimum temperature for germination of urediniospores in vitro (18.4–20.9°C) was higher than for mature teliospores (14.6–18.4°C). Light inhibited germination of both types of spores. Teliospore germination was inhibited by wavelengths of 590–750 nm, but this was partially reversible under other light conditions. A reversible inhibition of basidiospore formation was also observed under shorter wavelengths.

    Notes: Dichlofluanid controlled cane spot (Elsinoë veneta) of raspberry cv. Mailing Jewel when applied before harvest in a four-spray programme, but carbendazim, vinclozolin and iprodione were ineffective. Lesions predominated in the fruit-bearing region of canes in a zone 46-120 cm above soil level. Bait plants exposed for periods of 2 weeks in two infected plantations in north-east Scotland developed lesions, after incubation for 4-6 weeks, only on internodes which were the youngest at the time of exposure. Infection occurred in all periods from mid-April to late July. The infection of bait plants was related to the distribution of lesions on canes in the spray trial.An isolate of E. veneta obtained from a plantation sprayed with carbendazim and vinclozolin was resistant when tested in vitro to carbendazim, benomyl and thiophanate-methyl. This isolate and another MBC-sensitive strain were both relatively insensitive to the dicarboximide fungicides iprodione and vinclozolin.

    Notes: Seven cultivars of red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) showed different susceptibility to infection by yellow rust (Phragmidium rubi-idaei) at two commercial plantations in Scotland and North Wales, The cultivars Latham, Chief and Boyne were completely resistant. Mailing Delight and Glen Clova supported more telial more than Mailing Jewel. In contrast the last named was the most susceptible cultivar at the aecial stage in Scotland but developed similar numbers of aecia to Glen Clova and Mailing Delight in Wales.Meeker had an extended latent period, fewer and smaller pustules and a very small yield of urediniospores compared to the other susceptible cultivars, thus showing the characteristics of slow-rusting genotypes. At the Scottish site in 1982, where rust was less than in Wales, Meeker and Mailing Jewel performed differently to the other cultivars at the telial stage. Inoculation studies under controlled environmental conditions with urediniospores from each site revealed an interaction between cultivars and isolates suggesting that variation in pathogenicity is present in populations of P. rubi-idaei in the UK.
