Notizen: Electronically active defects in hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin films, deposited by the conventional glow discharge process in the temperature range between about 225 and 325 °C with ∼10–15 at. % hydrogen, undergo a thermally activated relaxation during film deposition. We determine the kinetics of this relaxation process in films with similar hydrogen concentrations deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering at a substrate temperature of ∼40 °C, and annealed at temperatures greater than 150 °C. We present a quantitative relationship between the relaxation time, and the deposition and/or annealing conditions required to produce low defect density material.

Notizen: Yellowfin bream, Acanthopagrus australis, support an important angling fishery in Moreton Bay, a large estuarine system on the east coast of Australia. An analysis of the records of catches by anglers indicates that abundance and mean size of yellowfin bream have changed little in Moreton Bay during the period 1945 to 1980. Over the past 5 years substantial increases have occurred in the total angling effort for yellowfin bream at surf bar spawning areas in Moreton Bay. This has resulted in a decrease in mean catch per unit effort but no apparent decrease in total yield. Reclamation and development projects which cause degradation of the surf bar spawning areas have the greatest potential to cause reduction in abundance of yellowfin bream in Moreton Bay.

Notizen: Abstract Sulfate and selenate compete for active transport across cell membranes via a common permease, suggesting that a significant interaction may exist between uptake of the two ions. The effect of sulfate on selenate uptake and toxicity in Selenastrum capricornutum was investigated using two sulfate levels (3.3 and 33 mg/L S, as SO4) and two selenate levels (10 and 100 μg/L Se, as SeO4). This provided four treatments: one with S:Se molar ratio of 75, two with molar ratios of 750, and one with a molar ratio of 7,500. Selenium uptake and toxicity analyses demonstrated antagonism between the two anions. Increasing sulfate resulted in significantly reduced selenate uptake and increased algal growth. There was a significant difference in selenate uptake between the two treatments with the same S:Se molar ratio suggesting different relative permease affinities for each of the ions at different substrate levels (i.e., above and below permease saturation levels) and/or the presence of two different permease systems. The environmental significance of sulfate and selenate antagonism is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Tomographic imaging provides a powerful technique for obtaining images of the spatial distribution of ionospheric electron density at polar latitudes. The method, which involves monitoring radio transmissions from the Navy Navigation Satellite System at a meridional chain of ground receivers, has particular potential for complementing temporal measurements by other observing techniques such as the EISCAT incoherent-scatter radar facility. Tomographic reconstructions are presented here from a two-week campaign in November 1995 that show large-scale structuring of the polar ionosphere. Measurements by the EISCAT radar confirm the authenticity of the technique and provide additional information of the plasma electron and ion temperatures. The dayside trough, persistently observed at high latitudes during a geomagnetically quiet period but migrating to lower latitudes with increasing activity, is discussed in relationship to the pattern of the polarcap convection.

Notizen: Abstract This paper highlights the important role played by the EISCAT radar for verification in the development of tomographic techniques to produce images of ionospheric electron density. A brief review is given of some of the stages in the application of tomographic reconstruction techniques to the ionosphere. Results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the method in imaging ionospheric structures at high latitudes. In addition, the results include the first tomographic image of the ionosphere for a region extending from mid-latitudes over mainland Scandinavia to high latitudes above Svalbard.

Notizen: Abstract The tomographic reconstruction technique generates a two-dimensional latitude versus height electron density distribution from sets of slant total electron content measurements (TEC) along ray paths between beacon satellites and ground-based radio receivers. In this note, the technique is applied to TEC values obtained from data simulated by the Sheffield/UCL/SEL Coupled Thermosphere/Ionosphere/Model (CTIM). A comparison of the resulting reconstructed image with the ‘input’ modelled data allows for verification of the reconstruction technique. All the features of the high-latitude ionosphere in the model data are reproduced well in the tomographic image. Reconstructed vertical TEC values follow closely the modelled values, with the F-layer maximum density (NmF2) agreeing generally within about 10%. The method has also been able successfully to reproduce underlying auroral-E ionisation over a restricted latitudinal range in part of the image. The height of the F2 peak is generally in agreement to within about the vertical image resolution (25 km).

Notizen: Arachis glabrata Benth.) (RP) stands as they age, possibly because of the decline in associated grasses, particularly bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flügge). Our objective was to assess the effect of spring N fertilization and summer stocking rate (1.5 vs. 2.5 animals ha-1; Exp. 1) or spring N fertilization and presence or absence (no grazing until July) of spring grazing (Exp. 2) on the herbage yield and botanical composition of mixed RP-grass swards. In both experiments, pastures were fertilized with either no N (N-0) or 35 kg ha-1 of N (N-35) in March or early April for 3 yr. Sward herbage mass (Mg ha-1) and botanical composition were assessed in spring (April), summer (July), and fall (October) of 1995 and 1996 and spring of 1997. In Exp. 1, stocking rate did not affect herbage mass or botanical composition, but fertilization did. By spring 1997, there was an eight percentage unit increase in grass contribution (0.30 Mg ha-1 increase in dry matter) and a trend for greater decline in RP (five percentage units, but no change in RP dry matter) for N-35 vs. N-0. Other forbs, Mexican tea (Chenopodium ambrosoides L.), and cogongrass [Imperata cylindrica (L.) and cogongrass [Imperata cylindrica (L.) Räusch.] were not affected by N rate. Similar changes in herbage mass and RP percentage were noted for Exp. 2, but there was a stocking rate × N fertilization interaction for grasses because the percentage increase in grass was greatest when N was applied and grazing deferred in the spring. Forb content of the sward was not affected by N fertilization of spring grazing. Our results show that grass yield and content of RP-grass swards can be manipulated by N fertilization and deferral of spring grazing, but for the limited time period studied (3 yr), increased grass presence was not sufficient to inhibit encroachment of weedy forbs.
