    Abstract: This Open Access book introduces readers to the regional geology of Hanggai, Xianxia and Chuancun, the area between China's northern Zhejiang Province and southern Anhui Province and explores the strata, magmatic rocks and tectonic structures in 1:50,000 scale geological maps. Based on studies of multiple stratigraphic divisions, the standard stratigraphic section of the upper Ordovician Hirnantian in the lower Yangtze region is established, revealing for the first time numerous “Burgess Shale-type” sponge fossils in Hirnantian strata and identifying 10 grapholite fossil belts and various fossil categories, including chitin, trilobites, gastropods, brachiopods, and cephalopods. Moreover, the book identifies for the first time Late Ordovician volcanic events in northern Zhejiang province. The work represents a major contribution to research on Paleozoic strata in the Lower Yangtze region, and sheds new light on understanding the Hirnantian glacial event and biological extinction event in South China by providing a high-precision time scale. In addition, the book opens an important avenue for future research on sponge evolution after the Cambrian life explosion. As such, it offers a unique and valuable asset for researchers and graduate students alike.

    Description: The Northwest Pacific Action Plan (NOWPAP, http://www.nowpap.org/) is an integral part of the UNEP Regional Seas Programme (RSP) initiated in 1974. The overall goal of NOWPAP is “the wise use, development and management of the coastal and marine environment so as to obtain the utmost long-term benefits for the human populations of the region, while protecting human health, ecological integrity and the region’s sustainability for future generations”. NOWPAP was adopted in 1994 and currently has four member states: the People’s Republic of China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation. The RSP covers in total 18 regions across the world at present.

    Notes: Antibiotic-resistant mutants of Mycoplasma gallisepticum were selected in vitro from the susceptible strains S6 and BG44T by serial passages in stepwise concentrations of erythromycin, tylosin, or tilmicosin. High resistance to erythromycin or tilmicosin developed readily, whereas resistance to tylosin developed only after greater numbers of passages. Three mutants selected by each selector antibiotic were cloned and detected, and all cloned mutants exhibited cross-resistance to the three selector antibiotics as well as to lincomycin. Portions of the genes encoding domain V of 23S rRNA of the cloned mutants were amplified by PCR, and their nucleotide sequences were compared to those of the susceptible parent strains. Five of the six mutants selected by erythromycin harbored an A2058G (Escherichia coli numbering) mutation in one of the two 23S rRNA. One of the six mutants selected by erythromycin harbored a G2057A mutation and an A2059G mutation in the other 23S rRNA. In tilmicosin-selected mutants, two mutations, A2058G and A2503U, occurred in one of the two 23S rRNA. No mutation was detected in the two 23S rRNA of tylosin-selected mutants with low-level resistance. Mutations at homologous locations in the 23S rRNA of other macrolide-resistant bacteria indicate that the phenotype of macrolide resistance occurring in M. gallisepticum is strongly associated with point mutations in domain V of 23S rRNA.

    Notes: Tunnel junctions with AlN (AlNxOy) barriers and CoFe and FeTaN electrodes were studied. The AlN barrier was formed by nitridizing a 10 Å thick Al layer using radio frequency N2 plasma. The nitrogen and oxygen content in the barriers was determined by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) on specially prepared barriers deposited on DLC coated substrates. RBS results indicate less than 10% O2 incorporation in the barrier. Top-pinned junctions formed by nitridizing a 10 Å thick Al layer (CoFe electrodes) show resistance×area products from 73 Ω μm2 to 8.5 kΩ μm2 for increasing nitridation times from 30 to 200 s, with corresponding tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) values from 13% to 33%. Bottom-pinned junctions with FeTaN electrodes were also fabricated. Maximum TMR signal is 17% after anneal at 225 °C for 30 min. In both cases (CoFe or FeTaN electrodes), TMR degrades for anneals above 250 °C. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Spin-dependent tunnel junctions with ZrAlOx barriers were formed by natural oxidation (5 min at 10 Torr) of 7-Å-thick Zr–Al films. Resistance×area products of 6 Ω μm2 were achieved with a 15.3% tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) signal. Bottom-pinned (MnIr) junctions were deposited on top of 600-Å-thick, ion-beam-smoothed, low-resistance, Al electrodes. Effective average barrier height and thickness are 0.28 eV and 8.2 Å, respectively, and breakdown voltage is 0.41 V for 1 μm2 junctions. The TMR signal decreases by half at a bias voltage of 210 mV. Junction TMR decreases for anneals above 250 °C. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy indicates that ZrAlOx forms an amorphous barrier that is smoother than pure crystalline ZrOx or pure amorphous AlOx barriers. These low-resistance tunnel junctions are attractive for read head applications above 100 Gbit/in.2 where competitive signal-to-noise ratios imply resistance×area products of few Ω μm2 and TMR signals near or above 20%. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Spin-dependent tunnel junctions with crystalline ZrOx barriers were fabricated, with tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) reaching 20% and a resistance×area product of 24 k Ω μm2, after annealing at 260 °C. Effective barrier height and thickness are 1.6 eV and 10.6 Å, respectively. The ZrOx barriers were fabricated by rf plasma oxidation of a 5 Å thick Zr layer. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry were used to characterize the as-deposited barrier. Both ZrO and ZrO2 phases are present, together with (CoFe)Ox. Upon annealing, the interfacial oxygen moves into the barrier, resulting in an increase of TMR from 2% to 19.2%, an increase of barrier height from 0.3 to 1.6 eV, and a reduction of barrier thickness from 18.5 to 10.5 Å. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
