    Notes: Summary The adequacy of antibiotic choice and the importance of the physician's knowledge of antibiotic use in causing errors in prescribing were investigated. A prospective three-month study was conducted in nine Italian pediatric hospital wards, involving every patient admitted to hospital for otitis, pneumonia or pharyngotonsillitis. The suspected aetiology and the antibiotic prescribed were recorded on a special form by the physician in charge. Each choice of antimicrobial agent was judged as adequate, justifiable or not justified. Out of 314 prescriptions 56.1% were assessed as adequate, 4.1% as justifiable and 39.8% as not justified. Analysis of the suspected bacteria, and of the correlation between the presumed aetiological agent and the prescribed antibiotic, demonstrates that inadequate knowledge of the physician plays a major role in producing a high percentage of unjustified prescriptions.

    Notes: The Neogene kinematics of the Giudicarie fault (part of Periadriatic lineament, NE Italy) have been re-examined using apatite fission-track analysis. Twenty samples were collected along two geological sections; the first one crossing the Tertiary Corno Alto pluton (Adamello batholith) and the Variscan basement (Southalpine domain) adjacent to the South Giudicarie fault, the second one close to the North Giudicarie fault, in the Variscan basement of the Tonale nappe (Austroalpine system). Samples from the southern section show short tracks and ages between 14.7±1.2 Myr and 22.5±2.2 Myr along 1570 m of the profile; samples from the northern profile present long tracks and ages between 11.3±1.3 Myr and 14.7±3.4 Myr along 1225 m of the vertical profile. In the former, the presence of short tracks might indicate either a long permanence of the rocks in the apatite partial annealing zone, or a more complex thermal history; in the latter case we are dealing with rocks which experienced more rapid cooling. The two differing segments of the Giudicarie fault can be explained either as two completely independent tectonic features or, more likely, by hypothesizing a single fault active in its southern and northern parts at different times. Fission track data support a first exhumation of this single fault c. 15 Ma along the North Giudicarie, with a final exhumation towards the south, in the Adamello area, at c. 8–10 Ma (Mid Tortonian). This age fits with the so-called ‘Giudicarie’ phase, during which σ1 in the stress field was orientated N280–290°.

    Notes: Liquid crystalline polymers can be processed to form high strength/modulus materials. In processing these materials, it is apparent that molecular orientation is an important factor in determining the physical strength of the processed materials. In this study a systematic investigation was carried out to determine how a thermotropic copolyester of parahydroxybenzoic acid (PHB) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) responds to two basic types of flows: shear and extensional flow. This was accomplished by preparing sheared and extended samples under controlled conditions of temperature and flow history. Sheared disks were prepared using a disk and plate geometry of a Rheometrics Mechanical Spectrometer (RMS model 605), while extended ribbons were prepared using a slit die attached to an Instron capillary rheometer. Two copolymerer compositions of 60 mole percent and 80 mol percent PHB were investigated. The sheared disks and extended ribbons were investigated for molecular orientation and morphological textures using wide angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, respectively. It was found that extensional flow has a greater capacity for orienting such materials than shear flow. Samples annealed at their softening points for 1 minute (240°C for the 60 mole percent PHB/PET copolymer and 300°C for the 80 mole percent PHB/PET copolymer) showed no significant loss of orientation, indicating that once orientation is produced it may remain in the melt for a long period of time. Sheared samples prepared by shearing the sample while cooling showed significantly higher degrees of orientation than those not cooled while being sheared. This may indicate that a minimum stress level exists for the production of orientation in shear flow.

    Notes: Guidelines are developed for molding large composite parts via structural reaction injection molding using glass preforms and polyisocyanurate resins. These are based on numerical simulations of the simultaneous heat transfer and reaction kinetics of a commercial system during and after mold filling. Premised requirements are that resin does not gel before the mold is filled, yet, reactions are sufficiently vigorous to approach completion. An existing mechanistic kinetic model is used and material parameters found from a chemical kinetics study employing an insulated cup. It is found desirable to use a high mold temperature and a low preform temperature in molding. Nondimensionalization of the governing equations reveals the existence of a Nusselt number (Nu), which describes the relative importance of heat transfer between resin and glass relative to thermal diffusion to the mold wall. With a Nusselt number of about 50 or higher it is possible to use the cooling capacity of the preform to extend gel time. The magnitude of Nu is influenced by part thickness, glass fraction, strand diameter, and flow velocity. Thus, the effect of the preform on extending resin gel time is within control of the molder.

    Description: Apatite fission-track (AFT) data from two traverses across the Great Escarpment of the western coast of South Africa are used to reconstruct the tectonic evolution and denudation history of this sector of the Atlantic passive margin. Fission-track ages range between 180 and 86 Ma. Modelling of this data identifies two distinct cooling events. The first event, between 160 and 138 Ma, is recorded only by the rocks above the escarpment in the Karoo area, and is tentatively linked to post-Karoo magmatism (c. 180 Ma) thermal relaxation. The second, between 115 and 90 Ma, results instead from a tectonically induced denudation episode responsible for the removal of up to 2.5 km of crust across the coastal zone in front of the escarpment and less than 1 km on the elevated interior plateau. Based on these results, it is suggested that the Cretaceous is the time when most of the elevated topography of Southern Africa was generated, with only a minor Cenozoic contribution.

    Description: Cosmogenic 21 Ne and 10 Be analyses across a subhorizontal fossil alluvial fan flanking the Cape Mountains near Laingsburg (Western Cape, South Africa) indicate a formation age for this fan of at least 2 Ma. Maximum erosion rates obtained from samples of quartzite ridges protruding through the fan alluvium deposits are very low (〈~0.4 m/Ma) and analytically indistinguishable from those derived from pebbles from the fan surface (〈~1.5 m/Ma). Our results are consistent with the low denudation rates obtained from other cosmogenic nuclide analyses and predicted by apatite fission-track and offshore sedimentation analyses for southern Africa during the Cenozoic. They integrate already existing substantial evidence to show that relative tectonic stability has prevailed across southern Africa throughout this period, and that the present-day large-scale topography is largely inherited from the Cretaceous and has been only minimally resculptured by denudation during the Cenozoic.
