Notizen: All directors are faced with real, or imagined, conflicts of interest or competing demands for time and resources, between shareholders and stakeholders. This has always been the case, but the contemporary emphasis on stakeholders has brought this to a head. Although astute organisations and directors maintain a suitable balance between the various demands placed upon them, and there are systematic ways to do this, there are a few voices opposed to stakeholding in any shape or form. In order to suggest that stakeholding is the viable and sustainable way for companies to proceed, the article considers and criticises one anti-stakeholder, together with other antagonists, before bringing in endorsements from different quarters, and introducing three categories of stakeholding of which the normative holds most promise. Practical approaches to discriminating among the claims of various stakeholders are indicated.

Notizen: This article considers notions of accountability and governance in the charitable sector. It suggests a model of accountability based on a case study of a well known, but anonymous charity. The opportunities for voluntary bodies are increasing and more state funds are becoming available; but with them comes a demand for more public accountability. A definition of accountability is proposed and the extent of the charity’s compliance discussed. From this inventory of compliance, conclusions are drawn as to reforms needed in the charity’s structure and management if it is to become more in tune with its environment.

Notizen: The traditional wisdom that auditor whistleblowing is disloyal and unprofessional is under pressure in the light of public concern and the public interest, but professional support is not keeping up and more European research is needed. Notizen: The aim of cultivating closer links between education and businesshas become the accepted wisdom and practice in the UK over more than thepast decade. With delayering resulting in flat organizations, one way toretain the interest and motivation of staff is through encouraging linkswith the world of education, which is seen as having training value tocompany employees, pupils and education institute staff. The advantagesof such education-business partnerships are seen to be mutual, and mostlarge and many smaller companies are now entering into them. Indeed, oneinitiative by a larger company seeks to encourage smaller companies tobecome involved. It is becoming increasingly common for some evaluationto be undertaken of the effectiveness of such arrangements, butgenerally on a one-to-one basis. What is presented here is anindependent evaluation of one large company's partnership from theperspective of the education side of the equation. Many insights areprovided of the strengths and potential weaknesses of such arrangements, with suggestions made as to how improvements may be achieved.

Notizen: The Institute of Personnel and Development has long recognized the impact that small- and medium-sized enterprises make in encouraging innovation in human resources management. It was, therefore, perfectly consistent that as part of their major initiative to assess the current status and future direction of personnel management, they would wish to research the SME sector. The researchers, part of the charity of the Professional Development Foundation, sampled over 300 companies, and this article reflects the findings relating to internal, corporate communications. Not unnaturally, SMEs favour more informal modes of communication, although breakdowns in this, plus other pressures, invoke the need to introduce some degree of formality. The research themes emerging are further explored in ten case studies which represent a representative cross-section of SME activity.

Notizen: The small and medium enterprise (SME) sector is receiving increasing recognition and, as part of this, its human resources needs is a comparatively neglected area. This study of 300 companies consisted of a comprehensive investigation of all aspects of human resources. The focus here is on the training and development aspects. Evidence from the survey itself and the detailed case studies is presented. This shows that training is by no means neglected, although it tends to be hands on rather than theoretical. It is related to both countering competition and the corporate strategy of companies. Management education is a less certain area, and may depend on whether those in charge of companies have themselves been through management education. Suppliers are not invariably in touch with sector needs.

Notizen: Corporate governance has emerged from obscurity into being a mainstream topic which there is a need to know, as well as being incorporated into industrial and commercial training courses. There has been a plethora of reports starting in the USA and spreading to the UK, whose influence, example and model have spread throughout the world. Some main forces explaining the provenance of corporate governance are provided before discussing the US Treadway and COSO Reports. Concerns with business ethics also are a factor. These reports in turn influenced the Cadbury Report and the "sons of Cadbury" the most recent and most significant being the recent Turnbull Report. This impacts much more on grass roots practices than the others, and its messages therefore need to be absorbed into training courses.

Notizen: Managers frequently ask questions that may be sensitive orthreatening. The answers that come back may be disingenuous, owing tosocial desirability bias which has two sub-divisions: personality anditem characteristics. The first refers to an overall tendency for anindividual to respond in a desirable manner. The second depends on theparticular context. It is not always obvious which questions may beperceived as sensitive or threatening. Ten measures are suggested thatmay assist in reducing the bias. These are reliability checks, embeddingthe question, adopting non-personal interviewing methods, the use ofdiaries and panels, selecting an appropriate time-frame, using openquestions, contacting informants, formulating longer questions, incorporating familiar words, and loading the question.

Notizen: An historical saunter is taken through the development of approaches, legal and organisational, to deal with whistleblowing. Whistleblowing engenders strong emotions, and it is not surprising that some of the early pioneers met with stiff resistance. Some classic whistleblowing cases are analysed, notably Stanley Adams and charge nurse Graham Pink. Key developments and cases during the Thatcher period are outlined. Employment law was rather primitive, and failed to give much definitive protection to whistleblowers. The contribution of the Committee of Lord Nolan on Standards in Public Life is outlined. The area of higher education, and the pivotal territory of financial services, accounting and auditing also are treated.
