Notes: The osmoacclimation of Ectocarpus siliculosus isolates known to have different salt tolerances was investigated. Included were isolates originating from 5 different locations in the northern hemisphere, and sporophyte and gametophyte phases of different ploidy from two of the locations were compared. The effect of salinity treatment (8–64%0) on inorganic ions (K+, Na+, Mg2+, Cl−, SO2−4, phosphate) and the low molecular weight carbohydrate mannitol was measured, together with complimentary measurements of cell viability. Very different responses between isolates were obtained, both between isolates of different geographic origin and between sporophytes and gametophytes from the same parent material. A similarity in response between haploid and diploid gametophytes, and diploid and triploid sporophytes indicates that physiological differences between gametophyte and sporophyte generations are not necessarily based on ploidy changes alone. There were no identifiable differences in the responses of male and female gametophytes. K+ is the major osmolyte within the species, and differences in the regulation of K+ largely account for the observed variation in osmoacclimation, both between life history phases and between isolates from different localities. Isolates with broader salt tolerances had the higher concentrations of mannitol. There were differences between isolates in the amounts and regulation of Cl− and phosphate, the latter being present in unusually high concentrations. There were also isolate differences in the concentrations of Mg2+ and SO2−4, although these divalent ions were present only in low concentrations.

Notes: Abstract Ice cores were collected between 10.03.93 and 15.03.93 along a 200 m profile on a large ice floe in Fram Strait. The ice was typical of Arctic multi-year ice, having a mean thickness along the profile of 2.56 ±0.53 m. It consisted mostly of columnar ice (83%) grown through congelation of seawater at the ice bottom, and the salinity profiles were characterized by a linear increase from 0 psu at the top to values ranging between 3 and 5 psu at depth. Distributions of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) and major nutrients were compared with ice texture, salinity and chlorophyll a. DOC, DON, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), NH4 + and NO2 − were present in concentrations in excess of that predicted by dilution curves derived from Arctic surface water values. Only NO3 − was depleted, although not exhausted. High DOC and DON values in conjunction with high NH4 + levels indicated that a significant proportion of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) was a result of decomposition/grazing of ice algae and/or detritus. The combination of high NH4 + and NO2 − points to regeneration of nitrogen compounds. There was no significant correlation between DOC and Chl a in contrast to DON, which had a positively significant correlation with both salinity and Chl a, and the distribution of DOM in the cores might best be described as a combination of both physical and biological processes. There was no correlation between DOC and DON suggesting an uncoupling of DOC and DON dynamics in multi year ice.

Notes: Abstract Distribution of photoassimilated carbon into major metabolite classes differed between two Antarctic diatom species, Nitzschia curta and a small unicellular Chaetoceros sp.. Time course uptake studies (over 54 h) revealed that 14C allocation appeared to be equilibrated after approximately 8 h at light saturated photosynthesis. During short term dark periods (6 h), polysaccharides as well as low-molecular-weight compounds were catabolised to sustain protein synthesis in the dark, whilst lipid reserves were not mobilised for this process. Experiments with these two species were conducted at 0 and -1.5°C, although no difference in the distribution of radiolabel was measured between the two temperatures. It is hypothesised that under near-optimal conditions fast growing species are characterised by a high carbon turnover associated with a rapid flow of newly assimilated carbon into polymeric compound classes. On the other hand, slower growing species (such as N. curta) may store a significant amount of surplus carbon in the low-molecular-weight metabolite fraction. Species specific preferences were observed when comparing the accumulation of radiolabel into the lipid pools.

Description: Terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM) undergoes significant changes during the estuarine transport from river mouths to the open sea. These include transformations and degradation by biological and chemical processes, but also the production of fresh organic matter. Since many of these processes occur simultaneously, properties of the DOM pool represent the net changes during the passage along the hydrological path. We examined changes in multiple DOM characteristics across three Finnish estuarine gradients during spring, summer and autumn: Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, coloured DOM absorbance and fluorescence, stable carbon isotope signal of DOC and molecular size distribution. Changes in these DOM characteristics with salinity were analysed in relation to residence time (i.e. freshwater transit time), since increased residence time is likely to enhance DOM degradation while stimulating autochthonous DOM production at the same time. Our results show that the investigated DOM characteristics are highly correlated, indicating common physico-chemical transformations along the salinity continuum. Residence time did not explain variations in the DOM characteristics any better than salinity. Due to large variations in DOM characteristics at the river end-member, conservative mixing models do not seem to be able to accurately describe the occurrence and extent of deviations in DOM properties in the estuaries we investigated.
