Notizen: The interaction of high-intensity subpicosecond KrF*-laser pulses with aluminium plasmas is investigated at intensities between 1014 and 1017 W/cm2. Using a one-dimensional hydrocode, the laser energy absorption and time evolution of plasma parameters have been studied as a function of laser intensity, incidence angle, and polarization. Complementary particle-in-cell simulations have also been performed to check the collisionless absorption component carried by hot electrons and ions. These simulations are compared to previous experiments on laser pulse absorption and x-ray generation. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Solid state density aluminum and carbon plasmas were generated by 350 fs KrF laser pulses at intensities of 1017 W cm−2. Reflectivity, x-ray emission, and spectra of the backscattered radiation were measured as a function of the laser polarization, angle of incidence, and intensity (I). For p-polarized light, the absorption (A) is almost intensity independent for 1015 W cm−2〈I〈2×1017 W cm−2, and can reach values up to A=0.8. For constant laser intensity, p-polarized light is up to a factor of 15 more efficient in generating x rays than s-polarized light. A polarization and angle of incidence-dependent absorption mechanism, such as resonance absorption or vacuum heating, is consequently important. The spectral line shape and positions of the reflected radiation from the carbon plasma showed a substantial intensity dependence. It is demonstrated that the backscattered spectrum is influenced by the plasma expansion (Doppler effect) and the temporal development of the electron density.

Notizen: The interaction of high-intensity subpicosecond KrF*-laser pulses with aluminum plasmas has been investigated. The laser pulse absorption and the x-ray production have been related at a series of intensities up to 1017 W/cm2 and different angles of incidence. Soft x-ray spectra were measured in the wavelength range from 7 to 150 A(ring) with various spectrographs. The spectra show distinct dependences on the laser intensity, the polarization, and the angle of incidence. The observed dependence of the spectra on the intensity and on the angle of incidence is the result of both the angular dependence of the laser pulse absorption and that of the conversion efficiency of the absorbed energy into soft x-ray emission. The spectra are influenced by the size of the absorption volume, the electron density where the absorption mainly takes place, and other parameters, such as the electron temperature. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A novel spectrograph comprised of a transmission grating, toroidal mirror, and microchannel plate detector is presented here. It is capable of detecting spectra in the wavelength range from 5 to 150 A(ring) with a resolution of about 1.5 A(ring). Owing it to high efficiency, even an x-ray spectrum of a low-energy laser produced plasma, i.e., emission of the order of 10−10 J/sr, can be measured in a single shot.

Notizen: Soft x-ray spectra generated on flat Al targets by a 500 fs KrF* laser pulse (intensity 5.3×1015 W/cm2), preceded by a prepulse of the same pulse duration, have been measured as a function of the pulse separation and the prepulse intensity. It was found that not only the total x-ray emission was much stronger when the prepulse was present but, in particular, lines in the shorter wavelength region had a higher intensity than without prepulse, and were strongly dependent on the time separation between the prepulse and the main pulse.

Notizen: The attenuation of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) on YZ-LiNbO3 crystals, coated with an aluminum layer of several hundred angstroms, has been measured as a function of temperature in the range from 0.3 K to room temperature. A peak in attenuation was found between 50 and 250 K dependent on layer thickness and SAW frequency. Addition of an adhesion layer with a thickness of about 15 A(ring), placed between substrate material and metal coating, drastically lowers the attenuation at higher temperatures. In this case, the attenuation rises slowly with temperature and no peak occurs.

Notizen: Abstract We have found a simple analytical expression which describes the relation between amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and small-signal gain in short-pulse amplifiers. It is also shown that the contrast of the short pulse to the ASE is weakly dependent on the saturation of the ASE, and influenced mainly by the saturation of the short pulse. The theoretical considerations were verified by measurements.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of a short prepulse (0.5 ps) on soft X-ray spectra from a plasma generated by a high intensity KrF* laser pulse (main pulse: 0.5 ps, intensity I main=5.3×1015 W/cm2) on flat targets of Al and Cu has been studied in detail. The spectra have been measured as a function of the pulse separation Δt between the two pulses and the prepulse intensity I pre. It was found that both the overall emission and the line emission increased with Δt (at constant I pre) and with I pre (at constant Δt). In particular, lines in the shorter wavelength region had higher intensity. The influence of the prepulse on the line emission of specific transitions in the Al spectra was investigated systematicly. An explanation for the observed effects is given.

Notizen: Abstract. Soft-X-radiation in the “water-window” region (23.3–43.6 Å) mainly from carbon laser plasmas generated by subpicosecond (700 fs) 0.248-μm laser pulses is studied as a function of angle of incidence and intensity (up to 1018 W/cm2) for p-polarized laser light. Furthermore, comparison is made between plasmas generated from massive and foil targets. Numerical calculations are performed using a hydrocode coupled to X-ray line and continuum emission calculations including radiation transport. The optimized conditions to achieve maximum water-window X-ray emissivity and, in particular, carbon Lyman-α line emission are investigated. In addition, analytical scalings are presented. These theoretical results are essentially confirmed by previous experiments. It is found that at optimized conditions, picosecond or subpicosecond laser plasma X-ray sources with a power of the order of 1–10 GW in a spectral window of 1 Å could be developed.
