    Notes: We have investigated the thermally stimulated exoelectron emission (TSEE) from Ar plasma-treated Si by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and by employing a theoretical equation. The sample surfaces were exposed to ambient air after the plasma treatment. The TSEE glow curve (298–623 K) exhibited broad emission peaks at ∼373 and ∼473 K, and an increase in the intensity above 573 K. A theoretical analysis revealed that the glow curves were composed of four peaks except for the increase above 573 K, where each peak had a different trap depth, but almost the same electron affinity. The resolved two peaks in the lower temperature region increased compared to those in the higher temperature region with an increase in the O1s/Si2p ratio and also in the Si2p (oxide)/Si2p (substrate) ratio. The relationship of the surface chemical structure to the resolved four peaks is considered.

    Notes: We investigated whether or not a mutually compensating state of coagulation and fibrinolysis is changed by homogeneous magnetic fields. We used a superconducting magnet which produced magnetic fields of up to 14 T at its center. Fibrin polymerization over time, and the subsequent dissolution of the fibrin fiber network, were observed by measuring the optical absorbance of the mixture at 350 nm. A spectrophotometer with an external optical cell box in a superconducting magnet was used. We observed that the optical absorbance of the mixture at 350 nm increased during the fibrin-polymerization process, and decreased during the fibrinolytic processes. The optical absorbance was stable in the transient state between fibrin-polymerization and fibrinolytic processes. A magnetic field of 14 T increased the rate of the polymerization process by 55%–70% compared to the control group. On the other hand, the rate of the fibrinolytic process under a magnetic field at 14 T, increased by 27%–140% compared to the control. The results indicate that the magnetic orientation of fibrin fibers accelerated both the polymerization and the dissolution of fibrin fibers. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity was detected in the muscle and skin tissues from several fish species. The muscle GSH-Px showed an optimum pH at 8.0 for salmon and 8.5 for carp. Stability of salmon muscle enzyme was enhanced in the presence of reduced glutathione (GSH), but considerably decreased in the presence of tert-butylhydroperoxide. When salmon fillets were stored at -50°C, the GSH-Px activity increased gradually during storage. Fish muscle GSH-Px shows potential for preventing oxidative deterioration in muscle during storage and processing.

    Notes: Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the skin of fish was observed to be higher in the dark than in the light parts. SOD activities in both parts were confirmed by visualisation of SOD activity on polyacrylamide gels. We suggest that the distribution of higher SOD in the dark parts of the skin might be related to melanization and to regulate of reactive oxygen species.

    Notes: Abstract— Fretting fatigue tests of high tensile roping steel, 1.5 mm in diameter, 1770 MPa grade, were carried out in air and seawater. S-N curves were completed in both the environments and under cathodic protection at-850 mV (SCE). The crack growth curves were determined at three different alternating stress levels. The coefficients of friction between the specimen and the fretting bridge, where the macro-slip occurred, were found to be 0.63 in air and 0.38 in seawater. The prediction of the fretting fatigue lives were made according to the Tanaka—Mutoh model, where the frictional force was taken into consideration. The predicted fatigue life agreed well with the experimental results in air but in seawater the prediction defined a much higher fatigue limit compared with the experimental results which showed the absence of the fatigue limit. These results indicate that the method of removing the electrochemical component is very promising for the prevention of fretting fatigue failure in seawater.

    Notes: Abstract— Fretting fatigue tests of an austenitic stainless steel used for a propeller tail shaft were carried out in seawater and in air. In seawater, fretting significantly reduced the fatigue strength, however, the fretting fatigue lives at higher levels of stress were longer than those in air. The tangential force coefficient (defined as the ratio of the frictional force amplitude and the contact load) in seawater was much lower than that in air and varied in the range from 0.3 to 0.5 during the fretting fatigue tests. The lower tangential force coefficient in seawater seems to be the main reason for the longer fretting fatigue life in seawater. The prediction of fretting fatigue life was made on the basis of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics, where the frictional force between the specimen and the contact pad was taken into consideration. The predicted fatigue lives agreed well with the experimental results in both air and seawater.

    Notes: Fatigue crack growth tests of five ceramic materials were carried out in order to investigate the general characteristics of cyclic and static fatigue crack growth in ceramics. A cyclic effect was found in Si3N4, Al2O3 and TiB2, where the main fracture mechanism was intergranular separation, and stress shielding due to grain bridging occurred near the crack tip. On the other hand, no cyclic effect was observed in Sic and ZrO2, where the main fracture mechanism was transgranular fracture. The fatigue crack growth curves reduced to a unique curve by using the parameter Kup/E, regardless of the kind of ceramics studied.
