    Description: We assessed the digestibility and utilization of ice algae and phytoplankton by the shallow, subtidal benthos in Ny Ålesund (Kongsfjord) on Svalbard (79°N, 12°E) using chlorophyll a (chl a), essential fatty acids (EFAs) and stable isotopes as tracers of food consumption and assimilation. Intact benthic communities in sediment cores and individuals of dominant benthic taxa were given ice algae, phytoplankton, 13C-enriched ice algae or a no food addition control for 19 to 32 d. Ice algae and phytoplankton had significantly different isotopic signatures and relative concentrations of fatty acids. In the food addition cores, sediment concentrations of chl a and the EFA C20:5(n-3) were elevated by 80 and 93%, respectively, compared to the control after 12 h, but decreased to background levels by 19 d, suggesting that both ice algae and phytoplankton were rapidly consumed. Whole core respiration rates in the ice algae treatments were 1.4 times greater than in the other treatments within 12 h of food addition. In the ice algae treatment, both suspension and deposit feeding taxa from 3 different phyla (Mollusca, Annelida and Sipuncula) exhibited significant enrichment in δ13C values compared to the control. Deposit feeders (15% uptake), however, exhibited significantly greater uptake of the 13C-enriched ice algae tracer than suspension feeders (3% uptake). Our study demonstrates that ice algae are readily consumed and assimilated by the Arctic benthos, and may be preferentially selected by some benthic species (i.e. deposit feeders) due to their elevated EFA content, thus serving as an important component of the Arctic benthic food web.

    Notes: Based on the measured CCT diagram of steel S34MnV, the parameters for the heattreatment of large marine crankthrow were designed, and the models for predicting microstructuralevolution and mechanical properties were developed. By computer simulation, the temperature andphase volume evolutions in the controlled cooling process were predicted together with the finalmechanical properties.     Notes: Nano anatase TiO2 thin films on glass slide substrates were prepared via a dip-coating methodusing refluxed sols (RS) as precursors, then dried under infrared light and calcined at 500°C for 30min.The RS sols and TiO2 films were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TEM, UV-Vis and SEM. Thephotocatalytic activities of the film samples were tested by the degradation of methyl orange solution witha concentration of 10mg/L under UV light irradiation. The results reveal that the RS sols are flavescent,alkalescent and contain needle-like anatase crystals. The TiO2 films are uniform, compact and transparent,their maximal light transmittance exceed 80% under visible light region. The degradation of methylorange results illustrate that the RS-6 TiO2 thin films show the best photocatalytic activities, thedecoloration rate of the methyl orange solution with RS-6 TiO2 thin films reachs 99% after irradiated160min under UV light

    Notes: The conventional method of bending the large crankthrow was investigated by computersimulation combined with manufacturing trial, and the typical forging defects, such as constrictedwaist, folded cracks and horn mouth on forged blank were analyzed. On the basis of these results, anovel forging shape of preformed blank was proposed using anti-transformation method bycomputer simulation. The FEM simulated results show that all the above defects can be avoided bycarrying out the novel method, furthermore, the maximum resistance of the novel bendingdeformation was reduced to 72% of conventional process, and the weight of forging blank can bedecreased by 15%. Finally, the optimum forging shape was applied to the actual process, thesimulation results were confirmed by manufacturing trial, and qualified forged piece was gained.The FEM model established can be used for further optimization of other types of crankthrow

    Notes: We report the fabrication of nanometer scale ordered arrays of magnetic cylindrical nanoparticles with low aspect ratio (height/radius a=0.2–7) and ultrahigh uniformity. Anodization and electrochemical deposition are employed for template synthesis and metal particle growth, respectively. Particle uniformity is achieved by an electrodeposition scheme, utilizing pulse reverse voltage wave forms to control nucleation and growth of the particles. The resulting nanoparticles are polycrystalline and grains are randomly oriented. The magnetic properties of the array are dominated by particle shape and by interparticle magnetostatic interactions. A very clear transition of the anisotropy from perpendicular to in plane is observed at an aspect ratio a of about two. The arrays exhibit good thermal stability, demonstrating a great potential of these structures as future recording media in a patterned scheme. The pulse reverse electrodeposition technique shows great promise for the synthesis of nanostructures of various nature. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have studied light-induced photoconductivity degradation in an intrinsic hydrogenated and deuterated amorphous-silicon (a-Si) alloy. Deuterated a-Si turns out to be more stable under light exposure. A possible mechanism is proposed to explain this phenomenon. It is attributed to the highly efficient coupling between the localized Si–D wagging modes (∼510 cm−1) and the extended Si–Si lattice vibration modes (∼495 cm−1). The energy released from electron or hole capture at silicon dangling bonds causes localized vibrations of nearby Si–D bonds. The energy dissipates quickly to the background lattice and a higher recombination rate at local sites is needed in deuterated a-Si than in hydrogenated amorphous silicon to accumulate enough energy to break the nearby weak bonds. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
