Notes: Abstract The saturation vapor of an alkali metal is treated as a monatomic particle real gas whose volumetric behavior is described by a truncated form of virial equation. The condensed state-vapor equilibrium constant, equal to the saturation fugacity for Li, Na, K, and Cs, is determined through evaluation of the second virial coefficient's temperature dependence. The third and the second law values of standard enthalpy of vaporization at the reference temperature 298 K for the same metals are determined. The applied procedure for evaluation of the second virial coefficient's temperature dependence produced small deviations for the resulting second law values and gave mean values in good agreement with literature data, especially with those of the JANAF Tables.

Notes: Abstract Volumetric behavior of carbon saturated vapor, in the temperature range 2500–3200 K, is described by two approaches: by the truncated form of the virial equation for the real monatomic gas and by the ideal gas equation of state for the mixture of present C i , species. The literature data for C i , partial pressure and $$\Delta _\upsilon H_{0,{\text{C}}_i }^0 $$ are analyzed through the comparison of the vapor pressure values deduced by the first approach with the data. New data for p 3 and $$\Delta _\upsilon H_{0,{\text{C}}_3 }^0 $$ are then evaluated. The values for carbon vapor pressure and saturated vapor molar volume calculated by two different approaches show remarkable agreement.

Notes: Abstract Thermodynamic characterization of silicon, germanium, tin, and lead vaporization is performed by the method applied earlier to alkali metals and carbon, i.e., by evaluation of analytical expressions representing dependence of the second virial coefficient and vapor pressure on temperature. Starting from saturation pressure values given as a sum of partial pressure of present species, through a modified procedure applied before to carbon, the parameters of anticipated forms ofB=f(T) andP=f(T) are optimized with very high degree of correlation. A new, simple, and efficient procedure for optimization ofP=f(T) parameters from particularP data is derived. The values of $$\Delta _\upsilon H_0^0 \left( {III} \right)$$ and $$\Delta _\upsilon H_0^0 \left( {II} \right)$$ , calculated for all the elements from the evaluated relationsB=f(T) andP=f(T), agree mutually as well as with thecodata recommended values. Applicability and efficiency of this method when applied to thermodynamic characterization of vaporization of the fourth group elements is justified through comparison of the obtained vapor pressure and saturated vapor molar volume values with the corresponding values deduced from the published data.

Notes: Abstract Mechanical behaviour of carbon fibre/glass mat/polyester resin hybrid composites of sandwich construction is studied through tension, flexure, impact and post-impact tension tests. Tensile and flexural strength, modulus and failure strain values are compared to the calculated values. Total impact fracture energy and residual (after impact) tensile strength values of hybrid composites are analysed with regard to corresponding values of carbon/polyester composites. Failure of tested coupons was analysed by visual inspection and observation by scanning electron microscopy.

Notes: Abstract The influence of Co additions on the sintering of nickel oxide was studied. On the basis of the density, specific surface area and Me3+ ion concentration changes, in the Co y Ni1−y O samples, having 0, 1, 5 and 10 cation % of Co, a positive effect of Co ions on the densification was assumed, during sintering at 500 to 900° C in an argon atmosphere. Using special heat-treatment, the differences in specific surface area of the investigated powders were eliminated. The differences in green densities were excluded as well and from the results, it was possible to show that dissolved Co ions enhance nickel oxide densification process.

Notes: Abstract An in vivo model has been developed for chronic observation of the effects of ischemia on cortical bone remodeling and perfused vascularity. Diaphragm occluders were implanted around the right common iliac artery of four rabbits and inflated to produce 10 h of ischemia to the limb. Microcirculation was monitored with intravital microscopy of injected fluorescent microspheres and FITC-Dextran 70 through a bone window, the tibial bone chamber implant (BCI). Bone resorption and apposition in the BCI were indicated with mineralization dyes. Between 2 and 12 h following release of the occluder, secondary ischemia/no-reflow and other evidence of reperfusion injury were observed. Vessel damage was suggested by abnormally high leakage of FITC-D70 from the few vessels perfused during secondary ischemia. In the weeks following occluder release perfused vasculature increased beyond pre-occlusion levels. Net bone resorption reached a maximum when vascularity passed normal levels. In order to further validate the arterial occlusion model for osteonecrosis, techniques for (1) confirming bone death and (2) detecting increased leukocyte adherence to endothelial cells were added. The dead cell stain Ethidium homodimer-1 was used to tag dead osteocytes immediately after occlusion and produced a measure designated “osteonecrosis index.” To detect leukocytes adhering to vessel walls, carboxyfluorescein diacetate, succinimidyl ester was injected at occluder release. An increase in the number of adherent leukocytes was detected. © 1999 Biomedical Engineering Society. PAC99: 8764Rr, 8717-d, 8719Tt

Notes: Abstract In horizontal continuous casting of semifinished products made of alloys of the Cu−Sn and Cu−Sn−Pb systems segregation of tin and lead complicates the problem of obtaining the specified composition. The aim of this work consists in determining the size of the sample and the conditions for taking it in casting for which the specified chemical composition of the casting will be uniform over the entire volume.

Notes: Abstract In recent years the range of application of cast irons in a heat treated state has widened. Isothermal quenching of irons that provides a favorable combination of strength and ductile parameters commonly inherent in steels is the most promising. The present work concerns the effect of regimes of isothermal quenching on the mechanical properties of cast iron.
