    Notes: Abstract  In tallgrass prairie, plant species interactions regulated by their associated mycorrhizal fungi may be important forces that influence species coexistence and community structure; however, the mechanisms and magnitude of these interactions remain unknown. The objective of this study was to determine how interspecific competition, mycorrhizal symbiosis, and their interactions influence plant community structure. We conducted a factorial experiment, which incorporated manipulations of abundance of dominant competitors, Andropogon gerardii and Sorghastrum nutans, and suppression of mycorrhizal symbiosis using the fungicide benomyl under two fire regimes (annual and 4-year burn intervals). Removal of the two dominant C4 grass species altered the community structure, increased plant species richness, diversity, and evenness, and increased abundance of subdominant graminoid and forb species. Suppression of mycorrhizal fungi resulted in smaller shifts in community structure, although plant species richness and diversity increased. Responses of individual plant species were associated with their degree of mycorrhizal responsiveness: highly mycorrhizal responsive species decreased in abundance and less mycorrhizal responsive species increased in abundance. The combination of dominant-grass removal and mycorrhizal suppression treatments interacted to increase synergistically the abundance of several species, indicating that both processes influence species interactions and community organization in tallgrass prairie. These results provide evidence that mycorrhizal fungi affect plant communities indirectly by influencing the pattern and strength of plant competitive interactions. Burning strongly influenced the outcome of these interactions, which suggests that plant species diversity in tallgrass prairie is influenced by a complex array of interacting processes, including both competition and mycorrhizal symbiosis.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of N,N-dimethylformamide, N,N-dimethylacetamide, 2-pyrrolidinone, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, and N-t-butyl-2-pyrrolidinone on the temperature of maximum density (TMD) of water has been investigated. Heats of solution for these compounds and for diethylsulfoxide, tetramethylene sulfoxide, tetramethylene sulfone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and tetrahydrofuran in water at 23°C are also reported. These data, together with published TMD and heat of solution data for other solutes, are used to examine the relationship between the enthalpy change on dissolution of a solute in water and the effect of the dissolved substance on the structure of water as reflected by changes in the temperature of maximum density of the system.

    Notes: Abstract Slide cultures of the type strain of P. boydii Shear, showed percurrent production of conidia by light microscopy over a period of several hours. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to examine the conidiogenesis. The conidiogenous cells developed annular ridges rather than typical annellophoric scars. Evidence that these ridges represented sequential spore production was shown by T.E.M. in the form of a discontinuity of the outer conidiophore wall at the widest point of each ridge.

    Notes: Abstract A light gas gun was used to dynamically load models of the wall sections typical of those used in the construction of buried structures. Scaling of the loading time history is addressed, and the appropriate nondimensional parameters for the loading and the model structural characteristics are defined. Scaling is simplified by use of structural materials for the models which have a yield strength and material moduli close to those found in prototype structures. Methods for producing the desired loading by using a light gun are investigated, and reasonable accuracy and flexibility in achieving the desired loading time history is demonstrated. Experimental results are given for the loading conditions and the failure mode that occurs when the model wall section is breached. The loading conditions to produce failure in the model are reduced to nondimensional form and compared to results from prototype field tests, also in nondimensional form. The resulting nondimensional data are used to evaluate the suitability of the light gun to dynamically simulate ground shock loading as well as to investigate failure criteria.
