The results suggest that all PPNe are axially, not spherically, symmetric, that spherical symmetry ends at the tip of the AGB, and that AGB evolution terminates with a burst of remarkably rapid, equatorially concentrated mass-loss.

    Notes: Abstract Observations have been made of a large sample of Vega-excess stars. Midinfrared spectra show silicate dust features and also the UIR bands, implying the presence of hydrocarbon material. Millimetre-wave photometry indicates the presence of large amounts of cool material, while near-IR photometry reveals an excess in several stars, which we ascribe to transiently-heated very small grains.

    Notes: Abstract We present 9.7 and 11.8 μm narrow band (Δλ/λ=10%) images of three carbon (C-) rich proto-planetary nebulae with an unusual 21 μm feature: IRAS 07134+ 1005, IRAS 22272+5435, and IRAS 04296+3429. The images were taken at UKIRT using the Berkeley/IGPP/LEA mid-IR camera. All three objects have a bipolar shape adding to the existing evidence that C-rich PPNe are by nature bipolar. Furthermore, we find the same bipolar morphology in a previous study of the C-rich, young planetary nebula, IRAS 21282+5050. We believe these four objects form an evolutionary sequence which links the C-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with the C-rich planetary nebulae (PNe). From this evolutionary sequence, we conclude that bipolarity in C-rich PNe begins on the AGB and that the dynamical ages of these PPNe are in fair agreement with theoretical ages for a 0.6 M⊙ hydrogen burning core star.

    Notes: Abstract Models are considered in which ‘true’ lifetimes are generated by a Weibull regression model and measured lifetimes are determined from the true times by certain measurement error models. Adjusted estimators are obtained under one parametric specification. The bias properties of these estimators and standard estimators are compared both theoretically, using small measurement error asymptotics, and by simulation. The standard estimators of regression coefficients, other than the intercept, are bias-robust. The adjusted estimator of the shape parameter removes the bias of the standard estimator.

    Notes: Abstract JCMT millimetre-wave detections have been obtained for 11 Vega-excess stars having spectral types ranging from B9 to K5. UKIRT 10-µm spectra have been obtained for two of the sources, SAO 179815 and SAO 186777. The spectrum of SAO 179815 shows an unusually broad and diffuse silicate emission feature, whilst SAO 186777 shows the unidentified infrared (UIR) features, which are usually attributed to hydrocarbon vibrational modes. The mm photometry, along with optical, IRAS and near-IR photometry (much of the latter recently obtained by the authors), have been used to define the spectral energy distributions of the objects. A number of them show a 1–5µm excess in addition to the longer wavelength excess. Values of the fractional excess luminosity,L dust /L ⋆, have been derived from the spectral energy distributions; they exhibit a substantial range, from ∼ 10−5 up to almost 0.5, the theoretical maximum for a passive optically thick flared disc. Radiative transfer models have been constructed for several sources. One needs a well defined overall energy distribution, 10- and/or 20-µm spectra, and sub-mm and mm photometry in order to significantly constrain the model free parameters (disc density distribution, grain size power-law index, minimum and maximum grain radii).

    Description: Here we present diffraction data that yield the oxygen-oxygen pair distribution function, g OO ( r ) over the range 254.2–365.9 K. The running O-O coordination number, which represents the integral of the pair distribution function as a function of radial distance, is found to exhibit an isosbestic point at 3.30(5) Å. The probability of finding an oxygen atom surrounding another oxygen at this distance is therefore shown to be independent of temperature and corresponds to an O-O coordination number of 4.3(2). Moreover, the experimental data also show a continuous transition associated with the second peak position in g OO ( r ) concomitant with the compressibility minimum at 319 K.
