    Notes: This paper describes research concerned with assisting groups in organizations handle their complex, ill-structured policy issues in ways which we believe are significantly different from many typical policy analysis projects. It is our belief that many systems research, operational research and management science projects have concentrated on ‘objective’, usually quantitative data at the expense of losing their clients' interest and commitment. Our work is concerned with taking account of intersubjectivity in policy analysis and evaluation. It is orientated to the construction of models that will be owned by our clients because they recognize as legitimate, and explicitly take account of, the subjective and particular knowledge of individuals within organizations. They also explicitly take account of the interaction of shared and individual knowledge as a group comes to define an intersubjective group issue.

    Notes: We present the story of a research exercise which encompassed the disciplines of finance, accountancy, marketing, organizational behaviour and strategy. The research developed through phases of multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary enquiry and our intention is to contribute to an understanding of these by telling the story of our difficulties and achievements. The subject of our enquiry, the expertise of finance and accountancy, came to be explained in a number of different ways, including finance and accountancy as multi-disciplinary analysis and finance and accountancy as research. We therefore wish to encourage broader views of finance and accountancy than those sometimes proposed and discussed. The research exercise took protocol analysis as its starting point and we wish to encourage interpretative approaches to the transcripts which result from protocol analysis exercises. In reflecting back on our experiences, we suggest that the biggest challenge of multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary enquiry is the challenge of convergence in the face of diversity.

    Notes: What do top managers see as the root of their success? This paper reports on a discourse analysis of five autobiographies from major industrial figures. Those chosen all had some disruption (war, being a refugee, or immigrant status) between the culture of their childhood and the culture in which they undertook their careers. This makes them more aware than most of their upbringing. Their accounts of their first 20 years are examined, and themes are drawn out for each of them. These themes are tabulated and some of the differences between them are discussed. Common themes are conspicuous by their absence. The paper discusses why this should not surprise us; top management is not one activity in one culture, and an upbringing that might have led one of these managers to success might have been disadvantageous to another. The paper concludes that the common factor between the accounts of the managers is that they all regard their upbringing as having fitted them particularly well for the company, industry and culture in which they were eventually successful.

    Notes: We consider the formation of issues on the organizational agenda of a manufacturing firm. We find that the patterns of issue formation vary markedly and we develop an analytic framework to examine a number of emerging, potentially ambiguous issues. We emphasize the importance to the organization of perceptions of collective freedom to construct an issue, the role of issue labelling and perceptions of emerging consensus over the construction of an issue. Jointly, these considerations affect whether an issue gains salience on the agenda and whether it is resolved constructively.
