Summary The ultra structure of membranes and decalcified shell were studied in 4 hen's (pullets') eggs. The general description of the membranes by Masshoff and Stolpmann (1961) can be confirmed. Some more details about the inner layer of the inner membrane and about the orientation and dimensions of the fibres are given. A description, different from that of Masshoff and Stolpmann (1961) is given of the course of the fibres in the calcified shell. They are anchored within the basal zone of the mammillae while the rest of the calcified shell is devoid of membrane fibres. The organic matrix in the mammillary and the spongy layer was examined. It is suggested that the density of the organic matrix in the latter bears a positive relation to shell strength. An account is given of the vesicular structure of the cuticle.
