Notizen: . The sexual stages and sporogonic development of Haemogregarina balli an apicomplexan blood parasite of snapping turtles, Chelydra serpentina were studied by electron microscopy for 30 days post feeding (PF). Gamonts were invested by an extracellular sheath which fused with intestinal microvilli. All stages of development were observed epicellularly within intestinal epithelial cells of the leech Placobdella ornata. Nuclear division in microgametogenesis was characterized by a trans-nuclear cytoplasmic channel containing the spindle fibers. Basal bodies associated with nuclear division were unpaired with an atypical (8 + 0) microtubular conformation. Four aflagellate microgametes were formed. During fertilization, a single microgamete was enclosed in a pocket of a microgamont. The pocket was lined by a dense layer and underlying ER. In sporogony, nuclei were invested by a trilaminar pellicle as they divided, forming four anlagen. Each anlage divided by longitudinal binary fission forming eight sporozoites in mature oocysts. Sporozoites penetrated the intestinal epithelium by 27 days PF.

Notizen: . The phylogenetic relationships of taxa representative of blood parasitic adeleids were investigated in a cladistic analysis. Two phylogenetic analyses were performed. Monophyly of species of Haemogregarina (sensu lato) of some marine fishes with species of Haemogregarina (sensu stricto) was not supported in either analysis. A new genus, Desseria n. g., was created to accommodate these species. The historical burden placed on the genus Haemogregarina Danilewsky, 1885 as a repository for poorly known and inadequately described species is partially relieved through taxonomic revisions involving the genera Haemogregarina, and Desseria n. g.

Notizen: The sexual and sporogonic development of Haemogregarina (sensu lato) myoxocephali, an apicomplexan blood parasite of longhorn sculpin, Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus, was studied by transmission electron microscopy. All stages of development were observed epicellularly within intestinal epithelial cells of the leech Malmiana scorpii. During microgametogenesis nuclear division was characterized by a transnuclear cytoplasmic channel containing the spindle microtubules. Four aflagellate microgametes were formed. During fertilization, a single microgamete nucleus was associated with the endoplasmic reticulum in the macrogamete, followed by fusion of the nuclear envelopes of the gametes. Sporogony involved peripheral budding of sporozoite anlagen and subsequent development to form approximately 32 sporozoites in mature oocysts.

Notizen: . A suite of 23 ultrastructural characters was used in a phylogenetic analysis of the protozoan order Diplomonadida. A single most parsimonious solution was found, with a length of 38 transformations and a consistency index of 0.84. The cladogram supports previous hypotheses of the relationships of the genera in the suborder Diplomonadina, as well as the inclusion of the genera Enteromonas and Trimitus in the order. Heterochrony is suggested in the change to binary axial symmetry, as hypermorphosis resulting from delayed cytokinesis in the ancestor. Hypotheses regarding a pivotal position for Giardia lamblia in the evolution of eukaryotes are inconsistent with the phylogeny proposed here.

Notizen: . In the last few years two factors have helped to significantly advance our understanding of the Myxozoa. First, the phenomenal increase in fin fish aquaculture in the 1990s has lead to the increased importance of these parasites; in turn this has lead to intensified research efforts, which have increased knowledge of the development, diagnosis, and pathogenesis of myxozoans. The hallmark discovery in the 1980s that the life cycle of Myxobolus cerebralis requires development of an actinosporean stage in the oligochaete, Tubifex tubifex, led to the elucidation of the life cycles of several other myxozoans. Also, the life cycle and taxonomy of the enigmatic PKX myxozoan has been resolved: it is the alternate stage of the unusual myxozoan, Tetracapsula bryosahnonae, from bryozoans. The 18S rDNA gene of many species has been sequenced, and here we add 22 new sequences to the data set. Phylogenetic analyses using all these sequences indicate that:l) the Myxozoa are closely related to Cnidaria (also supported by morphological data); 2) marine taxa at the genus level branch separately from genera that usually infect freshwater fishes; 3) taxa cluster more by development and tissue location than by spore morphology; 4) the tetracapsulids branched off early in myxozoan evolution, perhaps reflected by their having bryozoan, rather than annelid hosts; 5) the morphology of actinosporeans offers little information for determining their myxosporean counterparts (assuming that they exist); and 6) the marine actinosporeans from Australia appear to form a clade within the platysporinid myxosporeans. Ribosomal DNA sequences have also enabled development of diagnostic tests for myxozoans. PCR and in situ hybridisation tests based on rDNA sequences have been developed for Myxobolus cerebralis, Ceratomyxa shasta, Kudoa spp., and Tetracapsula bryosalmonae (PKX). Lectin-based and antibody tests have also been developed for certain myxozoans, such as PKX and C. shasta. We also review important diseases caused by myxozoans, which are emerging or re-emerging. Epizootics of whirling disease in wild rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) have recently been reported throughout the Rocky Mountain states of the USA. With a dramatic increase in aquaculture of fishes using marine netpens, several marine myxozoans have been recognized or elevated in status as pathological agents. Kudoa thyrsites infections have caused severe post-harvest myoliquefaction in pen-reared Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), and Ceratomyxa spp., Sphaerospora spp., and Myxidium leei cause disease in pen-reared sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and sea bream species (family Sparidae) in Mediterranean countries.

Notizen: Abstract Powerful tests of adaptational hypotheses can be made in the context of well-supported cladograms by investigating the most parsimonious transformation of intrinsic or extrinsic factors to explain their distribution across taxa in a cladogram. Such tests are used here to discover patterns of life-history evolution in leeches; in particular in relation to exploitation of terrestrial and aquatic habitats, parental care and resource utilization. Moreover, the relationships among leeches, acanthobdellids and branchiobdellids is reaffirmed as is their collective placement within the oligochaetes.

Beschreibung: To settle debate on the timing of sea level fluctuations during marine isotope stage (MIS) 3, we present records of d18O ruber (sea level proxy) and magnetic susceptibility from the same samples within the single sediment archive (i.e., "coregistered") of central Red Sea core GeoTü-KL11. Core-scanning X-ray fluorescence and environmental magnetic data establish the suitability of magnetic susceptibility as a proxy for eolian dust content in Red Sea sediments. The eolian dust data record similar variability as Greenland d18O ice during early to middle MIS 3, in agreement with previous observations that regional Arabian Sea climate fluctuated with a timing similar to that of Greenland climate variations. In contrast, the sea level record fluctuates with a timing similar to that of Antarctic-style climate variations. The coregistered nature of the two records in core KL11 unambiguously reveals a distinct offset in the phase relationship between sea level and eolian dust fluctuations. The results confirm that sea level rises, indicated by shifts in Red Sea d18O ruber to lighter values, occurred during cold episodes in Greenland during early to middle MIS 3. This indicates that the amplitudes of the reconstructed MIS 3 sea level fluctuations would not be reduced by inclusion of regional climate fluctuations in the Red Sea sea level method. Our analysis comprehensively supports our earlier conclusions of large-amplitude sea level variations during MIS 3 with a timing that is strongly similar to Antarctic-style climate variations.

Beschreibung: During the mid-Pleistocene transition the dominant 41 ka periodicity of glacial cycles transitioned to a quasi-100 ka periodicity for reasons not yet known. This study investigates the potential role of deep ocean hydrography by examining oxygen isotope ratios in benthic foraminifera. Oxygen isotope records from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean basins are separated into their ice volume and local temperature/hydrography components using a piece-wise linear transfer function and a temperature calibration. Although our method has certain limitations, the deep ocean hydrography reconstructions show that glacial deep ocean temperatures approached freezing point as the mid-Pleistocene transition progressed. Further analysis suggests that water mass reorganisation could have been responsible for these temperature changes, leading to such stable conditions in the deep ocean that some obliquity cycles were skipped until precessional forcing triggered deglaciation, creating the apparent quasi-100 ka pattern. This study supports previous work that suggests multiples of obliquity cycles dominate the quasi-100 ka glacial cycles with precession components driving deglaciations.
