Notes: Summary The lunar daily (L) and lunar monthly (M) variations in horizontal magnetic field (H), maximum electron density (N max ), height of peak ionisation (h max ), semi-thickness (y m ) of theF 2 layer and total electron content (N t ) at Huancayo for the period January 1960 to December 1961 are described. The lunar tidal variations inh max follow sympathetically the variations inH such that an increase of magnetic field causes the raising of height of peak ionisation. Lunar tides inN max are opposite in phase to that ofh max with a delay of about 1–2 hours, suggesting that an increase of height causes a decrease in maximum electron density. The lunar tides in semi-thickness are very similar in phase to that inh max . The lunar tidal effects in any of the parameters are largest inD-months and least inJ-months. The amplitude of lunar tides in maximum electron density seems to increase with increasing height whereas the phase seems to be constant with height. It is concluded that lunar tides in the ionospheric parameters at magnetic equator are greatly controlled by the corresponding geomagnetic variations.

Notes: Abstract Twenty three samples from the pyrophyllite-diaspore deposits have been investigated by x-ray diffraction and geochemical methods. The mineral assemblages belong to the K2O-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O system. Higher concentrations of Ti, Cr and Zr in the deposits as compared with the associated granites and gneisses suggest their laterite type parentage. Existing mineral assemblages are a result of low grade metamorphism (up to about 350°C) of the primary residual deposits containing a kaolinite - diaspore - quartz assemblage.

Notes: Abstract The effect of Actinomycin-D was studied on chiasma frequency in Vicia faba (var. Weibull's Akerabona). A significant decrease in chiasma frequency over control was observed in all cases irrespective of the time of fixation and chemical concentration. However, the maximum decrease was found in the material fixed after a recovery period of 24 hours. The decrease in chiasma frequency showed a linear relationship with time of recovery. Besides reduction in the chiasma frequency, cells showing complete failure of homologous pairing were also observed. These findings are discussed in the light of actinomycin-D action.

Notes: Abstract Microtus agrestis is characterised by long sex chromosomes, most of which are constitutively heterochromatic, and thus supposedly, genetically inactive. A method to assess the template activity of the chromosomes is to study the distribution of chromatid aberrations produced by H3UdR, among and within the chromosomes. In such a study, in female Microtus agrestis cells in culture, it was found that, a large number of localised chromatid aberrations was induced in the constitutively heterochromatic regions of both X chromosomes. The frequency distribution and types of aberrations were found to be cell cycle dependent. With differential staining it has been possible to demonstrate that the constitutive heterochromatin of the sex chromosomes are involved in the nucleolar organisation in this species, thus containing the ribosomal RNA cistrons.

Notes: The extent of hydrogen production by cooked black gram (Phaseolus mungo L.) seeds and cotyledons, germinated black gram seeds (24 hr), and a black gram and rice (Oryza sativa L.) fermented steamed product (Idli) was investigated with rat bioassay method. Whole black gram seeds had 3.4% verbascose, 0.9% stachyose, traces of raffinose, and 1.5% sucrose, while black gram cotyledons contained 4.0% verbascose, 0.7% stachyose, traces of raftinose, and 1.5% sucrose on dry weight basis. Maximum hydrogen production was obtained with 60% cooked black gram cotyledons in the diet. Germinated black gram seeds and fermented steamed product significantly produced lower flatus than the cooked black gram products. A positive significant correlation (r = 0.90) was found between oligosaccharides of the raffinose family of sugars of black gram and hydrogen production by rats.

Notes: This paper presents the study of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) process when the self-focusing effects of the pump and scattered laser beams are taken into account in three dimensions within the paraxial ray approximations. Integrated SBS reflectivity is found to exhibit a maximum value at an optimum SBS gain. The reflectivity with pump depletion is less than without pump depletion and several orders of magnitude lower than the usual three-wave interaction case. The effect of the statistical distribution of the laser beam on the SBS reflectivity has also been discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effect of an electric field on GMR oxide films was studied in a MOSFET configuration where the gate dielectric was a layer of SrTiO3 epitaxially grown on an underlying layer of the manganate which served as the source/drain. The response of the manganate channel was studied for different gate voltages. The following significant features were observed. The peak resistance temperature shifted to lower temperature for both polarities of the field. The resistance change varied quadratically with the field indicating the dominance of strain or polarization effects. In dynamical studies of the system using the gate voltage as an excitation the system showed anomalous slowing down near the peak of the resistivity. These results are understood on the basis of a stress effect on the film due to electro-elastic effects in the SrTiO3 layer, which introduces a tensile stress in the manganate layer upon the application of a gate voltage. The anomalous slowing down of the system near the ferromagnetic phase transition suggests a strong coupling between the spins, transport and structural distortions in the system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: There are different models which to try to explain the transport properties of the manganese oxides in terms of magnetic polarons, Zener double exchange and Jahn-Teller distortions of the lattice which is temperature dependent. Using Rutherford backscattering techniques (2–3 MeV He ions) we are measuring the presence of lattice distortions by studying the angular scans in the channeling mode. The angular widths (FWHM) can be used to extract both dynamic and static displacements of the atoms from their equilibrium sites. The technique is extremely powerful in the sense that local uncorrected displacements as small as 0.01 A(ring) from the equilibrium position can be detected. The extraction of the physics from the data is relatively straight forward compared to other techniques such as XRD or neturon scattering. Using a variable temperature backscattering system at our center (one of three or four systems around the world) the angular width (FWHM) is found to exhibit a dramatic change with temperature increasing with decreasing temperature showing a possible correlation with both the transport and magnetic properties. The results suggest a decrease in the lattice disorder with reduced temperature far in excess of what one would predict on the basis of a simple Debye behavior. The reduction in the lattice disorder correlates very well with the resistance vs temperature dependence. A variety of manganese oxide epitaxial thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition have been studied and the data suggests a role for structural distortions in any mechanism to explain the transport properties of these materials. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] The growing body of experimental evidence for the existence of complex textures of charges and spins in the high-temperature superconductors has drawn attention to the so-called ‘stripe-phase’ model as a possible basis for the mechanism of superconductivity in these materials. ...
