    Notes: An archaeal Rieske iron–sulfur protein has been crystallized for the first time. The genetically constructed soluble form of the soxF protein was expressed in E. coli. It contains a correctly inserted [2Fe–2S] cluster. The authentic soxF protein is part of a terminal oxidase complex in the respiratory chain of the hyperthermoacidophilic crenarchaeon Sulfolobus acidocaldarius (DSM 639). The enzyme crystallizes in the space group P61 or P65, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 80.19, c = 75.69 Å. A complete data set has been collected to 1.64 Å resolution at 100 K.

    Notes: Formation of secondary phases and diffusion of cations in diffusion couples of yttria-stabilized zirconia and lanthanum manganite substituted with 0 to 60 mol% strontium have been studied by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Only the primary phases were observed after 120 h at 1200°C, while formation of secondary phases was identified already after 1 h heat treatment at 1350°C. The phase composition of the reaction layer altered from La2Zr2O7 to SrZrO3 at increasing Sr content in LaxSr1-xMnO3. The thickness of the reaction layer was increasing with heat treatment time. In diffusion couples of La0.4Sr0.6MnO3 formation of manganese oxide was observed in the perovskite layer after 1 h heat treatment at 1350°C, while isolated grains of SrZrO3 relatively deep inside the zirconia were observed after longer heat treatment time. Diffusion of Mn into zirconia was observed preferenced along grain boundaries in the early stage of the interface reaction.

    Notes: Sintered submicrometer powder mixtures of strontium-substituted lanthanum manganite and yttria-stabilized zirconia have been studied in order to investigate the chemical stability of these materials as respectively electrode and electrolyte in solid oxide fuel cells. Formation of secondary phases was observed after 1 h heat treatment at 1350°C and more than 13 h at 1200°C. La2Zr2O7 was formed in mixtures with LaMnO3 at 1350°C, while SrZrO3 was formed in mixtures containing La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 or La0.4Sr0.6MnO3. Only minor amounts of secondary phases were observed in mixtures with La0.7Sr0.3MnO3. Chemical analysis revealed considerable interdiffusion between the primary phases as well as A-site deficiency of LaMnO3 and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 when exposed to cubic zirconia. The oxidative/reductive nature of the chemical reaction between strontium-substituted lanthanum manganite and yttria-stabilized zirconia is discussed in relation to the Sr content in LSM. The lattice parameter of cubic zirconia was observed to be quite sensitive to the interdiffusion and is an excellent tool for investigating reactions on heterophase interfaces involving stabilized zirconia.

    Notes: Abstract: All aerobic organisms use the exergonic reduction of molecular oxygen to water as primary source of metabolic energy. This reaction is catalyzed by membrane residing terminal heme/Cu-oxidases which belong to a superfamily of widely varying structural complexity between mitochondrial and bacterial members of this family. Over the last few years, considerable information from this and other laboratories accumulated also on archaeal resopiratory chains and their terminal oxidases. In the following, the molecular and catalytic properties of the latter are discussed and compared to those from bacteria and eucarya under the aspect of their energy conserving capabilities and their phylogenetic relations. The Rieske iron-sulfur proteins being important functional constituents of energy transducing respiratory complexes are included in this study. A number of essential conclusions can be drawn. (1) Like bacteria, archaeacan also contain split respiratory chains with parallel expression of separate terminal oxidases. (2) The functional core of all oxidases is the highly conserved topological motif of subunit I consisting of at least 12 membrane spanning helices with the 6 histidine residues of the heme/Cu-binding centers in identical locations. (3) Some archaeal oxidases are organized in unusual supercomplexes with other cytochromes and Rieske [2Fe2S] proteins. These complexes are likely to function as proton pumps, whereas on a structural basis several subunit I equivalents alone are postulated to be unable to pump protons. (4) The genes of two archaeal Rieske proteins have been cloned from Sulfolobus; phylogenetically they are forming a separate archaeal branch and suggest the existence of an evolutionary ancestor preceding the split into the three urkingdoms. (5) Archaeal oxidase complexes may combine features of electron transport systems occurring exclusively as separate respiratory complexes in bacteria and eucarya. (6) As far back as the deepest branches of the phylogentic tree, terminal oxidases reveal a degree of complexity comparable to that found in higher organisms. (7) Sequence analysis suggests a monophyletic origin of terminal oxidases with an early split into two types found in archaea as well as bacteria. This view implies an origin of terminal oxidases prior to oxygenic photosynthesis in contrast to the widely accepted inverse hypothesis.

    Notes: Abstract Cytochrome b 6 f complexes, prepared from spinach and Chlamydomonas thylakoids, have been examined for their content of low molecular weight subunits. The spinach complex contains two prominent low molecular weight subunits of 3.7 and 4.1 kD while a single prominent component of 4.5 kD was present in the Chlamydomonas complex. An estimation of the relative stoichiometry of these subunits suggests several are present at levels approximating one copy per cytochrome complex. The low molecular weight subunits were purified by reversed phase HPLC and N-terminal sequences obtained. Both the spinach and Chlamydomonas cytochrome complexes contain a subunit that is identified as the previously characterized petG gene product (4.8 kD in spinach and 4.1 kD in Chlamydomonas). A second subunit (3.8 kD in spinach and 3.7 kD in Chlamydomonas) appears to be homologous in the two complexes and is likely to be a nuclear gene product. The possible presence of other low molecular weight subunits in these complexes is also considered.

    Notes: Abstract This paper contains an empirical analysis of growth and convergence in the European Union using a cross-country data set covering the period 1950–92. It seeks an answer to the question why some countries in Europe manage to catch up, while others, most notably the poorest ones, apparently do not. The empirical evidence provided in the paper points to several responsible factors. The distance of the economy to the technological leader differed across economies, which contributed to differences in convergence and growth behavior. In addition, the finding of conditional convergence implies that economies converge to different steady state levels of income per capita. Poor economies, like Portugal, Greece, Spain, and Ireland, presumably converge to a lower steady state level of income per capita, which leads to persistent differences in income per capita.
