Abstract The monitoring of groundwater quality is an important problem in environmental studies. The detection of anomalous concentrations of pollutants and the localization of possible contaminant sources are based on point data (observation wells) and subsequent spatial analysis. Most GIS packages include more or less sophisticated procedures for interpolation and visualization of spatially distributed variables. Usually weighted local mean of neighboring sample data is calculated for each node of a regular grid followed by isoline construction and plotting. Radial basis functions work properly if a (point-symmetric) range of influence can be assumed. On the other hand it is obvious that transport phenomena reveal preferential directions which can easily be modeled by “sectors of influence” which take into account the local flow regime. A simple improvement of existing interpolation algorithms can be obtained by selecting a suitable neighborhood for each grid node: Only upstream located samples can contribute to the contamination estimated at this grid node. The proposed interpolation method for contaminant concentration in groundwater takes into account the properties of the flow process. The search and weighting procedure can easily be implemented into existing interpolation programs. The improvement of estimation depends on a careful analysis and modeling of the local flow field.
Notes:
