    Notes: A new approach for power system event recognition and classification using HS-transform and RBFNN is presented in this paper. Different power system events (disturbances) like sag, swell, notch, spike, transient, and chirp are generated and processed through Hyperbolic S-transform (HS-Transform). The excellent time-frequency resolution property of HS-Transform is used to extract useful information (features) from the non-stationary signals for pattern recognition. Here HS-transform generates the S-matrix and S-matrix provides the time-frequency contours, phase contours and absolute phase of the corresponding signal. From the above extracted information, various numerical indices like standard deviation, variance, norm, energy are found out. Further these indices are used as inputs to the Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN) for classifying different power system events accordingly. The RBFNN provides accurate results even with inputs (indices) found out under high noise conditions (SNR 20 dB). Thus the proposed method provides a robust and accurate method for power system events classification.

The light-green somatic embryos germinated on half-strength MS salts and vitamins supplemented with 0.5 mg/1 abscisic acid and 2% (w/v) sucrose. The developmental stages of somatic embryogenesis were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy.

    Notes: Abstract The presence of heavy metals (Cr, Ni and Fe) in soil and accumulated by herbs, shrubs and trees regenerated naturally on the minewaste-dumps of Sukinda chromite mines (TISCO sector) were investigated. There was significant correlationship between Cr and Fe in the soil where a tree species (Catunaregam spinosa) occurred. Guazuma ulmifolia and Diospyros montana also did show significant correlation between leaf, stem and soil for Cr, Ni and Fe. Among the shrubs (Calotropis gigantea, Chromolaena odorata, Phyllanthus reticulatus and Woodfordia fruticosa) significant and positive correlations were obtained for Cr and Ni in soil and iron and nickel in leaf and chromium and nickel in stem. Among the annual herbs, whole plant of tephrosia purpurea and Borrevia articularis showed significant and positive correlation with chromium and nickel with the maximum correlation coefficient value. It was concluded that the above information would be useful in revegetation programmes in subtropical regions having seasonal rainfall.

    Notes: Abstract Leaf base and mesocotyl explants derived from in vitro-grown seedlings of Echinochloa colona were cultured on Murashige and Skoog's (MS) medium containing various concentrations of benzyladenine (BA), α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and kinetin. Leaf base and mesocotyl segments exhibited optimal morphogenetic response by using 6.66 μM BA with 2.68 μM NAA. Induction of rooting from regenerated shoots was readily achieved in half strength MS medium without organics and growth regulators. Histological studies revealed the sequence of shoot bud regeneration in the monocot system. The in vitro-raised plants were established in chromite minewaste.

    Notes: Abstract Rapid plant regeneration was achieved in callus cultures derived from leaf and stem explants of Plumbago zeylanica Linn. on MS basal medium supplemented with 4.44 μM 6-BA, 1.42 μM IAA and 3% (w/v) sucrose. The rate of shoot bud regeneration was positively correlated with the concentration of growth regulators in the nutrient media. The leaf explants were more responsive (82.3%) than the stem explants on medium containing 1.42μM IAA in combination with 4.44 μM BA. The rate of regeneration was found to maintain the same level for 12 months without loss of vigour. Rooting of the differentiated shoots was achieved in media having 0.57 μM IAA with 2% (w/v) sucrose within 10 days of culture. Regenerated plantlets were transferred to soil which grew normally with a survival rate of 90%. This protocol may help in the conservation of the species and selection of variants that may be induced to widen the genetic base of the genus.

    Notes: Abstract Nickel (0.13, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mg/l) increased the efficiency of somatic embryogenesis in leaf base and mesocotyl derived calli of Setaria italica. A lower concentration of nickel in the culture media promoted long-term maintenance of embryogenic calli that regenerated into plantlets. The plants obtained from embryogenic calli grown on Ni-containing medium showed tolerance to nickel. The growth of embryogenic callus was the maximum at 1.5 mg/l as compared to a lower or a higher concentration of Ni. Use of nickel may help in the induction of high frequency somatic embryogenesis in Setaria italica.

    Notes: Abstract An in vitro protocol was developed for the production of plants via somatic embryogenesis in callus cultures derived from petiole and leaf explants of Typhonium trilobatum. Optimum callus formation was achieved on semisolid Murashige and Skoog's [9] medium supplemented with 0.25 mg L−1 kinetin and 3.0 mgL−1 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) after 6 weeks of culture. Somatic embryogenesis was achieved upon transferring the callus to a medium containing 1.0 mg Lminus 1 kinetin and 0.25 mg Lminus 1 NAA. In vitro tuberization was also achieved on medium containing 1/2 strength MS basal salts supplemented with 1.0 mg L−1 Kinetin and 0.1 mg L−1 NAA. Embryo maturation and germination was achieved on the MS basal salts supplemented with 0.01 mg L−1 NAA and 2% (w/v) sucrose. Some thousands somatic embryo derived plantlets were hardened in the greenhouse and eventually planted in the open field.

    Notes: Abstract An efficient protocol was developed for in vitro clonal propagation of Plumbago zeylanica Linn. through nodal culture. Multiple shoots were induced from nodal explants of P. zeylanica on Murashige and Skoog's (1962) medium supplemented with 0.5 mg L−1 to 1.0 mg.L−1 6-benzyladenine and 3% (w/v) sucrose. Inclusion of IAA (0.01 mg L−1) in the culture medium improved the frequency of production of multiple shoots. Rooting was readily achieved upon transferring the shoots onto half-strength MS medium supplemented with 0.25 mg L−1 IBA and 2% (w/v) sucrose. Micropropagated plantlets were hardened in the greenhouse and successfully established in soil.

    Notes: Abstract Plantlet regeneration via organogenesis was achieved in callus cultures derived form mature leaves, stems and leaves, petioles and roots of young seedling of Psoralea corylifolia on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 2.5–3.0 mg L-1 BA, 1.0 mg L-1 NAA and 3% (w/v) sucrose. The rate of shoot bud regeneration was positively correlated with the concentration of hormones in the nutrient media. Shoot buds regenerated more readily from juvenile explants (seedling source) as compared to the mature explants. Addition of adenine sulphate (5 mg L-1) to the culture medium increased the growth of shoot buds. Optimum responses were obtained in hypocotyl and leaf explants using NAA in combination with BA, the highest rate of shoot bud regeneration being in hypocotyl explants. Rooting was readily achieved on the differentiated shoots on MS basal media without growth regulators. Regenerated plantlets were successfully established in the greenhouse.
