Notes: An infinitely resistive/conductive horizontal bed is assumed in an otherwise homogeneous and isotropic half space. Schlumberger, three electrode, and unipole profiles are computed at right angles to the strike of the bed. The Schwarz-Christoffel method of conformal transformation and numerical methods of solving non-linear differential equations are used to solve the boundary value problem. It is observed that (i) the three electrode system is the most sensitive gradient electrode configurations for electrical profiling, (ii) the apparent resistivities for Schlumberger, three electrode, and unipole methods become maximum when the depth of the bed is 0.06 L, 0.1 L, and 0.055 L for a resistive bed and minimum when depths are 0.085 L, 0.04 L-0.02 L and indeterminate for conductive beds, respectively, (iii) the limiting depths of detection (defined in the text) by Schlumberger, three electrode, and unipole configurations are respectively 0.9 L, 6.6 L and 2.0 L for resistive beds and 0.58 L, 1.17 L and 1.5 L for conductive beds. The electrode separation L is the distance between the two farthest active electrodes.

Notes: [Auszug] APROPOS our letter in NATURE of October 2, p. 586, it has been pointed out to us by Prof. E. V. Appleton and Dr. F. W. Chapman that though the curves delineating the variations of (µ2 with N and 1/f2 are quite correct, they cannot, however, be regarded as showing ...

Notes: Summary A combination of Schwarz-Christofel method and numerical methods of solving non-linear differential equations has enabled us to solve for the effect of an anticline on the telluric field and apparent resistivity. From the computed anomaly curves we conclude that complete information about an anticline can be obtained only if its height is at least thirty per cent of the total depth to the basement. However, partial information; e.g., depth to the top of an anticline, can be obtained even for smaller anticlines.

Notes: Summary The rotating nature of telluric field is simulated in an electrolytic model tank. Variations of this rotating field due to the presence of a few two and three dimensional geological models, simulated in the tank, are studied. The telluric ellipses, recorded on a C.R.O. Screen, are found to be useful for qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the non-linearly polarised telluric field data. Relative usefulnesses of the various parameters, e.g., (i)M=ratio of the semimajor and semiminor axis, (ii)K = square root of normalized surface areas, (iii) λ = linear eccentricity (✓(a 2/b 2-1) and (iv)e = conventional eccentricity ((✓1-b 2/a 2)), of a telluric ellipse are tested. Linear eccentricity appears to be the most sensitive parameter. Methods for determining depth and horizontal extent of a structure from a telluric map are suggested. Near surface inhomogeneities, as revealed from the experiment are unlikely to affect the telluric map due to a basement structure.

Notes: Summary The telluric field anomalies over a faulted basement are computed along profiles, perpendicular to the strike of the fault planes. Schwarz-Christoffel transformations, numerical method of solving non-linear differential equations and graphical crossplotting are used to obtain the solution of the boundary value problem. Computed anomaly curves reveal that (i) quantitative estimation regarding the width of the structure and throw of the faulting can be made from the telluric and its horizontal derivative maximal by graphical crossplotting, (ii) degree of resolution decreases with the increasing depth of the structure, (iii) the effects of a faulted basement (rectangular ridge) and those of a folded basement (triangularrridge) (Roy andNaidu [2]) are similar to a considerable extent.

Notes: Summary Endgroup analysis of polymethylmethacrylate obtained by initiation with thiol-dimethyl sulfoxide systems has been carried out using dye-techniques developed in our laboratory. Thiols used are 2-mercaptoethylamine hydrochloride, 2-mercaptoethanol, thioglycolic acid and n-butane thiol. The first three thiols incorporated amine, hydroxyl and carboxyl endgroup respectively to the extent of about one per macromolecule, while the last one as expected produced none of the above functional endgroups in the polymer. In the light of endgroup results initiation through thiyl radicals has been suggested. Probable termination mechanism has also been discussed.
