Description: Sm-Nd concentrations and Nd isotopes were investigated in the fine fraction of two Labrador Sea cores to reconstruct the deep circulation patterns through changes in sedimentary supply since the last glacial stage. Three sources are involved: the North American Shield, Palaeozoic rocks from northeastern Greenland, and mid-Atlantic volcanism. The variable input of these sources provides constraints on the relative sedimentary supply, in conjunction with inception of deep currents. During the last glacial stage a persistent but sluggish current occurred inside the Labrador Basin. An increasing discharge of volcanic material driven by the North East Atlantic Deep Water is documented since 14.3 kyr, signaling the setup of a modern-like deep circulation pattern throughout the Labrador, Irminger, and Iceland basins. During the last deglacial stage the isotopic record was punctually influenced by erosion processes related mainly to ice-sheet instabilities, especially 11.4, 10.2, and 9.2 kyr ago.

Description: Sand-sized basaltic glass fragments were recovered in the liner of Core 203-1243B-19R, the deepest recovery from Hole 1243B. Microprobe analysis of 582 glassy cuttings cluster into five compositionally distinct groups, most of which are unlike the lithologic units described on board ship. Drilling operations intended to sweep cuttings from the caving hole and differences between the cuttings and geochemically distinct lithologic units of the upper part of the basement indicate that the cuttings came mainly, if not entirely, from the lower part of the hole. They give information about the part of Hole 1243B that had poor core recovery. Enriched mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB) from the upper part of the hole and transitional MORB from two groups of cuttings from sources low in the hole may be a trace of the Galápagos plume on the Pacific plate or may be a normal consequence of eruptions from two distinct magmas on fast-spreading crust.

Notes: Summary We examined the relationship between queen number and worker size in colonies of the fire antSolenopsis invicta. Worker size in monogyne colonies was significantly greater than in polygyne colonies; furthermore, polygyne colonies snowed a strong negative linear relationship between queen number and worker size. Higher queen pheromone level and/or decreased food availability accompanying an increase in queen number likely play important roles in producing the observed patterns.

Notes: Summary The refractive indices of a number of bands and interbands of the polytene chromosomes in the living salivary gland cells of two species of Chironomus were measured with an interference microscope, and values were obtained for the total solid material present in each region. To make these measurements it was necessary to compress the cells until virtually no cytoplasm lay above or below the nucleus, but this produced no deleterious effects on the cells as a whole. The results indicated that there is not less than 25% of solid material in the band regions of these chromosomes, and not more than 15% of solids in the interbands. The nuclear sap of these cells was found to contain about 12% of solid material. Similar refractive index measurements were made on the bands and interbands of isolated chromosomes mounted in saline and in a 12% isotonic saline/protein solution of the same refractive index as the nuclear sap. In both these media the bands were again found to contain at least 10% more material than the interbands, but their refractive indices were lower in the saline than they were in the intact cells and markedly higher in the saline/protein. It is therefore concluded that the isolated chromosomes are, to some extent, permeable, and can permit the entry of protein molecules from the mounting medium and the egress of some or their own material.

Notes: Abstract Six new strains of Alcaligenes enriched for and isolated as nickel-resistant bacteria resemble Alcaligenes eutrophus H16 and contain both an NAD-reducing, tetrameric soluble hydrogenase and a membrane-bound hydrogenase. None of the soluble hydrogenases share with the Rhodococcus opacus MR11 enzyme tetramer the property of being cleaved easily into two dimeric moieties [a hydrogenase (βδ) and an NADH:acceptor oxidoreductase (αγ)], in the absence of nickel or at low ionic strength. The soluble hydrogenase of the newly isolated strain MR22 of R. opacus equalled that of strain MR11. The absence of a membrane-bound hydrogenase in Alcaligenes denitrificans strain 4a-2 and in Alcaligenes ruhlandii was confirmed.

Notes: Treatment of either of the stable anhydrous crystalline forms of or-lactose with potassium methoxide in methanol at reflux does not result in the formation of β-lactose, whereas the latter is formed from α-lactose monohydrate or hygroscopic anhydrous α-lactose under these conditions. We find that when β-lactose is added to a reaction mixture containing either form of stable anhydrous α-lactose, conversion of α-lactose to β-lactose proceeds readily. Further, we show that this conversion may be a solid-solid transformation rather than dissolution of α-lactose followed by crystallization as β-lactose.
