    Description: We consider model problems for the tear film over multiple blink cycles with heat transfer from the posterior side of the tear film. A nonlinear partial differential equation governs the film thickness on a moving domain in one space dimension and time. One end of the tear film moves in order to mimic blinking in the eye. The film thickness is coupled with the diffusion of heat from the posterior of the film, where the underlying cornea and aqueous humor are modeled as a rectangular domain. The domain of the tear film is located on one edge of the rectangle. The resulting problem is solved using the method of lines with a Chebyshev spectral method in space. Evaporation is included in the model, with end fluxes specified to compensate for the evaporation from the film. The numerical results reveal a similarity to quantitative in vivo observations of the film dynamics and measured ocular surface temperature. Periodicity in the film and temperature dynamics is explored with different flux conditions and end motions, and a transition between periodic and non-periodic solutions is analyzed.

    Description: The kinetic patterns of DNA synthesis in wild-type (RAD+) and rad 52 mutants of yeast, which exhibit high levels of synchrony during meiosis, are comparable. However, RAD 52 mutants accumulate single-strand breaks in parental DNA during the DNA synthesis period. Thus, the product of the RAD 52 gene has a role in meiotic DNA metabolism, as well as in the repair of DNA damage during mitotic growth.     Notes: The linear stability of a modulated Taylor–Couette system when the inner cylindrical boundary consists of a crystalline solid-liquid interface is considered. Both experimentally and in numerical calculations it is found that the two-phase system is significantly less stable than the analogous rigid-walled system for materials with moderately large Prandtl numbers. A numerical treatment based on Floquet theory is described, which gives results that are in good agreement with preliminary experimental findings. In addition, this instability is further examined by carrying out a formal asymptotic expansion of the solution in the limit of large Prandtl number. In this limit the Floquet analysis is considerably simplified, and the linear stability of the modulated system can be determined to leading order through a conventional stability analysis, without recourse to Floquet theory. The resulting simplified problem is then studied for both the narrow gap geometry and for the case of a finite gap. It is surprising that the determination of the linear stability of the two-phase system is considerably simpler than that of the rigid-walled system, despite the complications introduced by the presence of the crystal-melt interface.

    Notes: Solder drops spreading on metallic substrates are a reactive form of the wetting problem. A metallic component may diffuse in the liquid toward a metal substrate, where it is consumed by a reaction that forms a solid intermetallic phase. The resulting spatial variation in the composition of the drop may cause composition gradients along the free surface of the drop. Together with any thermal gradients along the free surface, Marangoni effects may, in turn, modify the bulk transport in the spreading drop. Motivated by this situation, we extend lubrication theory for the spreading of thin drops in the presence of gravity and thermocapillarity to include mass transport and solutocapillarity. We use an approximate solute profile in the drop to derive coupled evolution equations for the free surface shape and concentration field. Numerical solutions for the nonreactive (single component) drop agree well with previous theory. In the reactive case, we are only able to compute results for parameters outside of the range for solder materials. Including reactive effects in the model impacts the flow patterns and spreading rates at relatively early times; but by the end of the spreading, solutal effects have died out in the model. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A mathematical model is constructed to study the evolution of a vertically oriented, thin, free liquid film draining under gravity when there is an insoluble surfactant, with finite variable surface viscosity, on its free surface. Lubrication theory for this free film results in three coupled nonlinear partial differential equations describing the free surface shape, the surface velocity and the surfactant transport, at leading order. In the limit of large surface viscosity and the Marangoni effect, the evolution of the free surface is that of a rigid film. For mobile films with small surface viscosity, transition from a mobile to an essentially immobile film is observed for large Marangoni effects. It is also verified that stable aqueous films can be formed in the regime of high surfactant concentrations. The theoretical results are compared with experiment; the purpose of both is to act as a model problem to evaluate the effectiveness of surfactants for potential use in foam-fabrication processes. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Description: The phonon spectrum of Ge2Sb2Te5 is a signature of its crystallographic structure and underlies the phase transition process used in memory applications. Epitaxial materials allow coherent optical phonons to be studied in femtosecond anisotropic reflectance measurements. A dominant phonon mode with frequency of 3.4 THz has been observed in epitaxial Ge2Sb2Te5 grown on GaSb(001). The dependence of signal strength upon pump and probe polarization is described by a theory of transient stimulated Raman scattering that accounts for the symmetry of the crystallographic structure through use of the Raman tensor. The 3.4 THz mode has the character of the 3 dimensional T2 mode expected for the Oh point group, confirming that the underlying crystallographic structure is cubic. New modes are observed in both Ge2Sb2Te5 and GaSb after application of large pump fluences, and are interpreted as 1 and 2 dimensional modes associated with segregation of Sb.     Description: Nuclear stellar cusps are defined as central excess light component in the stellar light profiles of galaxies and are suggested to be stellar relics of intense compact starbursts in the central ~100–500 pc region of gas-rich major mergers. Here, we probe the build-up of nuclear cusps during the actual starburst phase for a complete sample of luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) systems (85 LIRGs, with 11.4 〈 log [ L IR /L ] 〈 12.5) in the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey sample. Cusp properties are derived via 2D fitting of the nuclear stellar light imaged in the near-infrared (NIR) by the Hubble Space Telescope and have been combined with mid-infrared (IR) diagnostics for active galactic nucleus (AGN)/starburst characterization. We find that nuclear stellar cusps are resolved in 76 per cent of LIRGs (merger and non-interacting galaxies). The cusp strength and luminosity increase with far-IR luminosity (excluding AGN) and merger stage, confirming theoretical models that starburst activity is associated with the build-up of nuclear stellar cusps. Evidence for ultracompact nuclear starbursts is found in ~13 per cent of LIRGs, which have a strong unresolved central NIR light component but no significant contribution of an AGN. The nuclear NIR surface density (measured within 1 kpc radius) increases by a factor of ~5 towards late merger stages. A careful comparison to local early-type galaxies with comparable masses reveals (a) that local (U)LIRGs have a significantly larger cusp fraction and (b) that the majority of the cusp LIRGs have host galaxy luminosities ( H band) similar to core ellipticals which are roughly one order in magnitude larger than those for cusp ellipticals.
